Many happy returns hey say you can’t go home again – that even if you return to a place where you started (hometown, university, place of employment) it will have changed so much since you left that it’ll feel unfamiliar. There’s truth to that old adage, but it neglects to account for the enjoyment that can still result from the process. 14-18_js_officefashion

In 2009, Jessica Goodworth and Julie White took part in “Too Cute for a Suit,” a Jstyle photo shoot about chic workplace fashion. This was before my time as Jstyle editor, and in fact before my time at the CJPC, but I recalled seeing that spread when I researched past issues after being named editor. By chance, both of their names (today Goodworth is Jessa Hochman) came across my desk for this summer’s shoot, and I was delighted to learn both were willing and able to participate – to “come back home,” in a sense, to Jstyle. You see, Hochman and White met on that 2009 photo shoot and hit it off – and they’ve remained friends ever since. We feel good about stuff like that at Jstyle, and their friendship is representative of the kind of connection we hope everyone can make and maintain

Myths That May Unjustifiably Prevent you from Having Plastic Surgery of rejuvenation last a lifetime. Essentially, what we are doing is turning back the clock—and it ticks forward but never catches up. However, almost all patients who undergo rejuvenation experience so much satisfaction from surgery that they desire to repeat the procedure seven to ten years later, and this results in an accumulated, rejuvenated appearance with related improved self-image.

he Internet is inundated with numerous myths about plastic surgery, some of which result in unwarranted avoidance of procedures that could otherwise improve the quality of life or self-images for many. In this article I shall review some of the most common myths and dispel them by offering accurate, scientific, and experiencebased information to help cosmetic surgery candidates make the suitable decision.

One common myth that may influence the economic decision to have cosmetic surgery is that the results of facial rejuvenation are temporary. This indeed is not the case. The achieved years of rejuvenation are permanent. Let us assume that a twin sister undergoes rejuvenation surgery and appears ten years younger after surgery. That twin is going to look ten years younger for the rest of her life, whether she undergoes another procedure or not. In reality, the gained years

Another very common myth is that cosmetic surgery is painful. In reality, most cosmetic surgery procedures result in temporary numbness—having serious pain is not something that is expected after most cosmetic surgery procedures. In fact, we consider pain as a potential sign of complications, and if pain occurs, we make a point of assessing the patient more carefully. There are some cosmetic procedures that are slightly more uncomfortable, such as chin surgery. Nevertheless, we routinely prescribe pain medication and we keep patients very comfortable after

any type of plastic surgery operation because pain is an individual matter, and what may not be painful for most may be painful or cause discomfort for others. One more common myth is that one needs to reach the age of 60 to 70 before contemplating facial rejuvenation. This is contradictory to the expertise-based conviction shared by those of us who specialize in facial plastic surgery. Initial rejuvenation surgery at age 60 or 70 can be appropriate and beneficial; however, the younger the age at which a person undergoes surgery, the more natural are the results, the longer the patient enjoys the results, the less detectable are the surgical changes, and the less chance there is for risk. Additionally, those of us who have practiced facial plastic surgery for many years are firmly convinced that the natural aging process is delayed in patients who undergo facial rejuvenation.

Lewis Theater. The film is a fascinating portrait of the unique food traditions and cultural diversity of Israel, and those who attend the screening will enjoy an Israeli food tasting. When the Republican National Convention takes over Cleveland from July 18 through July 21, the visiting delegates, politicians, convention goers and national media will be busy day and night. They’ll undoubtedly work up an appetite during those four days, and lucky for them, they’ll be in one of the best cities for dining out. For those dining in, so to speak, the RNC recently announced its list of official caterers. From more than 50 applicants, 12 caterers were selected – including Executive Caterers in Mayfield Heights and the Driftwood Group, which consists of more than a dozen establishments, including Bin 216, Hodge’s and Cibrèo in downtown Cleveland, Washington Place Bistro in Cleveland’s University Circle neighborhood, and 87 West at Crocker Park in Westlake. If you’re headed to the convention, look for Driftwood Group at Quicken Loans Arena and for Executive Caterers at the Huntington Convention Center. New ‘Kitchen’ in town

How does an artisan pizza with extra virgin olive oil, roasted garlic, roasted peppers, artichoke hearts, mushrooms, caramelized red onions, fontina, parmesan and arugula sound for dinner? Or maybe seared salmon with coriander-and-fennel-roasted fingerling potatoes, sautéd kale and spinach, and lemon sweet-pea almond butter? And for dessert, how about fresh fried doughnuts with berry compote-chocolate ganache dipping sauce? Those are but a few of the menu items at 56 Kitchen in Solon, the latest offering from Café 56’s Jay Leitson and StrEAT Mobile Bistro’s Izzy Schachner due to open in June. In addition to pizzas, dinner plates and desserts, the menu also features a wide array of salads, small plates, sandwiches and sides. The 3,800-square-foot space at 33857 Aurora Road will provide a rustic setting and seat about 100.

Curating a new identity

Readers of Jstyle’s spring issue received an introduction to a soonto-open Jewish deli from Jeremy Umansky, formerly general manager, larder master and wild food forager at Trentina in Cleveland’s University Circle neighborhood. At the time, the new venture was called Schmaltz Delicatessen and Bakery – but Umansky and his team recently shifted gears and gave the eatery a new name. It’s now known as Larder: A Curated Delicatessen and Bakery. In a May 20 Facebook post, it was explained that the team “made a small change that we feel better reflects our identity.” The post also confirms that Larder is scheduled to open this fall in Cleveland Heights. hen he was growing up in Tremont, Erich Hooper stayed in the background, learning cooking in the kitchens of neighborhood churches. People didn’t cotton to him being visible, so little Erich stayed in the back of the house. But the boy learned his lessons well and, armed with education in Tremont schools and two years each at Miami University in Oxford and Ohio University in Athens, became a mentor. A pioneer of urban farming, Hooper has been growing his own and then some for 25 years. He owns Hooper Farm, a home that also serves as a sort of school: Hooper teaches kids from Cleveland schools about the relationship between food and money. He schools them in what in effect is a burgeoning trade: urban farming. And in social skills. Sustainability is Hooper’s mantra, as is doing good, suggesting he lives according to the notion of tikkun olam (repairing the world). Whether it’s working for the Cleveland House of Corrections in Highland Hills or catering an ethnic club, Hooper is on the beneficial case. “Farming is a way to bring people together and bring the best out of everyone, a way to level the playing field no matter what your skill level is,” he says during a recent stroll through his backyard, which abuts the Towpath Trail and Clark Fields, in the shadow of factories in the city’s Industrial Valley district. He demonstrates walking sticks his pupils sell for $1 to $25; they’re repurposed branches decorated with bottle caps. “Here’s something that costs nothing but the time to put it together and you can make some money,” Hooper says, shaking the sticks. Elementaryand secondary-school children gravitate to his “holler” by word of mouth, he says. Schools call him, churches call him, he’s been interviewed countless times. “Everybody else came

after me, the first urban farmer in the city of Cleveland who owns their own property,” he says. Hooper Farm also was the first minority-owned business in Tremont, a Cleveland community by no means immune from prejudice. Hooper has been preaching the gospel of sustainability and self-sufficiency for a long time, both at home and in the greater community. He’s taken part in the One World Festival, he’s catered Shakespeare at the Zoo, Little Fish Records, Hessler Street Fair. He’s found where he belongs. As a black Jew – lore and some trinkets in his sister’s possession tell Hooper his family was Jewish on his grandmother’s side – Hooper has been the target of prejudice, largely because of his color. He survived the riots of the late 1960s that tortured Cleveland’s Hough neighborhood, and was stabbed when they spilled over to Tremont. “I have knife wounds on my body,” says Hooper, a utility athlete in his youth. (He played nose tackle at Miami, weighing 260 pounds at the max; he says the Detroit Tigers drafted him to play catcher when he was in high school.) “Tremont was more dangerous than Hough; we knew who the enemy was,” he says, recalling the convulsive race riots of 50 years ago. “There were white power buildings on the corners here,” including an Aryan Nation office at West

44th Street and Clark Avenue, and racist groups used to come down to his high school, “put pictures up of monkeys and blacks and a phone number and throw bricks at the school. “One kid, they ran his testicles into a fire hydrant, another kid had his teeth knocked out, his face going like this,” Hooper says, emitting a sound like a drumstick rattling a washboard. “It was terrible; I’ve been shot at, I’ve been stabbed.” And, in an incident of high, funny drama, almost shot by Cleveland police. James Levin, the founder of Cleveland Public Theatre, met Hooper about 30 years ago when Hooper auditioned for a part in Sam Shepard’s “The Unseen Hand.” Hooper got the part of Sycamore, one of three cowboy brothers. One day, Hooper hoisted Sycamore to unusual prominence. “In those days, we did something called Junkstock, organized by the poet Daniel Thompson,” Levin recalls. “We were doing a rehearsal of this play on a mountain of junk at Pearl Road Auto Wrecking and one of the scenes involved Sycamore pulling a rifle because he’d been threatened by an extraterrestrial.” So Hooper clambered atop a pile of auto parts, brandishing a rifle. Levin

figured someone must have called the police “about a black guy with a gun,” and when the boys in blue arrived, “they were ready to take a very aggressive posture,” he says. “I came running down to explain to them we were directing a play, but they refused to believe it; it took a while for me to calm them down.” Since then, Hooper has catered all of Levin’s festivals, from Ingenuity to One World to FireFish Festival, a gathering set for Lorain Sept. 17. “When I do a festival, he’s the first guy I call,” Levin says. Hooper’s food “is high quality, he focuses on locally produced, which we like to support, and he also works with us in terms of helping staff,” feeding workers in a barter arrangement “during the course of the festival.”

In Hooper’s garden Hooper has planted garlic, tomatoes, beans, grapes, asparagus. He cooks “African traditional dishes” including collard greens and chard. He makes great brisket and sweet potato latkes. His goal is to produce “fresh, local, organic, healthy, innovative food,” he says, noting he likes all foods and cuisines except seafood. In addition to preparing food at Hooper Farm, he cooks in the kitchens of his neighborhood’s few remaining churches, turning out traditional barbecue for the likes of the Italian-American Club in Wickliffe or the American Community Garden Association conference set

for August at Cleveland State University. A fan of classical music and bluegrass, Hooper is similarly eclectic in his spirituality. The exterior of his home bears an Israeli flag with a prominent Star of David. It also sports a sign pointing passersby to the nearby “Christmas Story” house. Does he identify as Jewish? “Yes, I do, yes, I do,” he says, acknowledging both the Jewish and Christian references. He has some dreidels in his home, and a Chief Wahoo yarmulke, along with several other patches, adorns his denim jacket. “Why can’t we all get along?” Hooper asks

rhetorically, noting he set up his Israeli flag-draped stand next to a Palestinian at a recent One World Festival. Not so rhetorically, he notes the Palestinian moved away. His aim is to explode stereotypes, helping people along the way. He keeps more than busy with a full-time job delivering for Just Natural Provision, a butcher shop on Woodland Avenue near East 40th Street on Cleveland’s East Side, along with his catering work and Hooper Farm work. “I’ve had students come from as far away as Connecticut,” says Hooper, claiming that at one point,

African-Americans made up 98 percent of the nation’s farmers, but now, only 2 percent – including him. Hooper Farm certainly keeps Hooper occupied. But it’s not the limit of his vision. Hooper’s idea is “to level 30 to 60 acres of the city and create a Disneylandatmosphere farming system,” from farm to table, including a restaurant, even a gift shop, he says. He’d also like to force local groceries to put gardens in their backyards. In the meantime, Hooper leads a sustainable lifestyle, working hard to get students onto the right track, catering events spanning the alternative and the mainstream, engaging even as he maintains a position somewhat off the grid. In an oddly endearing way, Hooper resembles one of his signature products, ghost

honey, a tantalizing blend of the fiery and the sweet. It’s Ohio honey topped with a chili pepper known to be the hottest in the world. Hooper toasts a bagel, then dusts it with his ghost honey. Eat it and you’ll break a sweat. Eat it and know you’ve tasted something unique. It’s a condiment with attitude and depth, courtesy of a man who has worked for “five mayors, two cops and one senator,” a man of deep and wide experience. “This is what you can do if you own your own land,” Hooper says. “This is what you can create if you let people work with you to be creative. “So the quest goes on. It depends on how long I have to keep going to get to where I’m going. It’s a daily thing. It’s a long journey. Nothing happens fast.” js

efore former Cleveland Browns offensive lineman Mitchell Schwartz left town, the Jewish pigskin player did an informal question and answer session on Twitter with his fans.

One asked the classic Cleveland question: Corky & Lenny’s or Jack’s Deli? That might be the Jewish deli question most frequently asked in Greater Cleveland, but there’s far more to deli sandwiches than battling over corned beef. After speaking with purveyors of pastrami and connoisseurs of corned beef from Corky & Lenny’s in Woodmere and Jack’s Deli in University Heights and Chicago Deli in Solon (also popular in the Jewish community), it’s clear that making a deli sandwich is as much about a craft as a cook. Gary Lebowitz, Jack’s Deli co-owner, takes pride in a kid who wants the deli man to make his sandwich rather than his mom. He takes pride in people who “walk into my restaurant and they want Gary to make their sandwich.” “A sandwich is made with TLC (tender loving care),” Lebowitz says. “It’s made with pride.” It’s also made with quality ingredients. Take corned beef, a point of pride at nearly every deli. “You have to start out with a quality corned beef,” Lebowitz says. “Ours is home cooked, sliced on our slicers. There’s nothing old in our restaurant. We’re constantly turning out beautiful corned beef.” Corned beef isn’t easily made. Corky & Lenny’s deli man Craig Kupchik says every piece is cooked fresh – from

early in the morning until 8 at night. The meat is cured elsewhere, but with Corky & Lenny’s special blend of seasoning, with the blend injected into the meat via 1,000 miniature needles. The meat is then cured for seven to 11 days. Also critical with corned beef is steaming. “It keeps the corned beef nice and smooth instead of falling apart,” Chicago Deli owner George Hamway says. “It’s easier to slice that way. It keeps it nice and tender and moist.” With corned beef, diners face a critical choice, even if many aren’t aware of it. They can ask for their corned beef to be served “juicy” or “fatty,” or in a health-conscious age, they can go “lean.” Regardless of health, many choose the

juicier shoulder cut, known in the business as the deckle. “Most of the old-timers all like a juicy corned beef sandwich with the fat,” Lebowitz says. “It seems like the new generation is more into the extra lean stuff.” “The marbling of the meat gives it the taste and tenderness and the flavor,” Kupchik adds. Same with the pastrami, although Lebowitz says 99 percent of customers opt for the fatty Romanian hot pastrami over a leaner cut. Pastrami is another art, according to Kupchik, who talked about how the cow stomach is smoked and peppered with plentiful coriander. Trucked in from New York, the pastrami is steamed upon arrival in Cleveland, thus softening the meat, opening its pores and allowing the spices “to reveal themselves.”

Freshness is front and center at area delis. Kupchik says that when he occasionally runs out of chicken or tuna salad, customers will ask why he didn’t make more. There’s a simple reason. “I’m about freshness,” Kupchik says. Unlike other cuisines, which blend in new and exotic ingredients, the world of deli sandwiches remains tradition-based. The egg salad at Corky & Lenny’s, well, “people like egg salad because it’s made out of eggs and mayo.” The chicken salad will have a little spice to it. The tuna salad – “we don’t muck it up, we keep it very simple,” Kupchik says – is tuna, eggs and mayonnaise. “For 56 years, that’s all we’ve done,” Kupchik says. “If they want to add something to it, I’ll gladly help them, but normally we keep our things

basic because that’s the way people like them.” The homemade turkey at Chicago Deli gets a few ingredients added in, Hamway says, but nothing crazy – mainly a mixture of butter, pepper and salt. The chopped liver is baked with onion, salt and pepper, then chopped with hard-boiled eggs and topped with a bit of olive oil. “It’s a Jewish delicacy,” Hamway says. “People like it with caramelized onions and chopped eggs – that’s what chopped liver is all about.” Even the mustard is kept simple. The local delis stock every kind imaginable – Bertman Original Ball Park, Stadium, Dijon and honey. Still, many go for simple yellow mustard when it comes to their deli sandwiches. The one thing that bonds every sandwich, whether it’s a

juicy corned beef or a smoked turkey, is the bread – and that too is critical. All three shops pointed to their bread provider with pride. (All three utilize Pincus Bakery in University Heights, while Jack’s also uses Davis Bakery and Deli in Woodmere.) All three cited the crunch their customers should taste upon taking a bite. Kupchik talked about caraway seeds and the importance of not slicing the bread while hot, which can “mangle” it. “The first thing that your lips go into, your teeth go into, in a sandwich is the bread,” Lebowitz says. And who can forget the pickle? “It’s an accompaniment,” Kupchik says. “It’s like having a soda with ice or ice cream with chocolate sauce or turkey sandwich with mayo.” “The pickle’s got to be good,” Lebowitz adds. “It’s got to be crunchy and good.” js

The Vue in suburban Beachwood joins its counterparts in downtown Cleveland in offering modern, stylish amenities

hen Alan and Valerie Levy were searching for a new place to call home in January 2015, they knew they wanted to be in an apartment. The two, now 29, were starting to plan a family and felt they weren’t yet ready for the responsibilities of homeownership. They also were born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela, and when they moved to the U.S. three years ago, they lived in North Carolina – meaning they had little interest in shoveling snow. The Levys scouted several Northeast Ohio locations without finding their perfect fit. But when they stumbled upon The Vue in Beachwood while searching online, their search ended. “We actually looked everywhere else except here,” jokes Alan, a management consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers. “We felt it had more of a young vibe, especially the places inside the building, like the lounges and the pool,” Valerie says about what caught their eye. They decided to move in last June, before the building was even fully completed. The Vue, on the southeast corner of Chagrin Boulevard and Green Road, is in an ideal location for the Levys, the parents of Maya, their 3-month-old daughter. Valerie walks down Chagrin to grocery shop, and it’s only a short drive to both the Mandel Jewish Community Center and Beachwood City Park. Alan appreciates that the building is in the heart of Cleveland’s Jewish community. “We looked in the downtown area and saw a few buildings there,” Valerie says of their home hunting. “I knew I wanted to have

a baby, but there were no supermarkets around or places for us to go to, like a park, so we thought maybe we should look in the suburbs. “This location here, everything is like 10 minutes away.” Downtown Cleveland has become a hot spot for young professionals to live in, but as The Vue’s stylish and modern luxury apartments suggest, some suburbs are ready to join the party – and people are starting to notice.

Luxury living The first group of residents moved into The Vue, a $40 million project developed by The NRP Group, in February 2015. The entire building was completed and opened in August of that year. The Vue houses 348 units across four floors. One-, two-, and three-bedroom options are available, as well as 16 penthouses. The units, which range in size from 729 square feet to 1,934 square feet, start at $1,555 per month and go up to $4,250 per month. The building is currently at 98 percent occupancy, says Brittney Perez, community manager at The Vue. “We have everybody from young business professionals and a ton of Cleveland Clinic

and University Hospitals employees, and then we kind of jump up to empty nesters, retired couples and divorcees,” Perez says. Chic and sophisticated, each unit features granite countertops, vinyl plank flooring and white trim. Tall windows and ceilings 9 to 13 feet in height create the appearance of spacious, welcoming rooms. The open-concept kitchen features a long island with a built-in sink and dishwasher. Three different finishes are available for each unit, allowing residents to choose the colors of their cabinets, walls and appliances. The master suite feels cozy, with taupe carpet and white trim, while the bathroom is sleek, with granite countertops, double sinks, and white subway tile around a standalone shower and separate bathtub. Each unit also comes with a full-size washer and dryer and roomy walk-in

closets. About 30 percent of the units include a balcony. Parking options include 140 outdoor first-come, first-served spaces, 511 underground open parking spaces and 61 underground private garages. “These are luxury apartment homes,” Perez says. “We really want you to come and make yourself at home. We want you to be comfortable and really settle down here and stay as long as you can.” Design options are plentiful at The Vue, giving residents the chance to pick a layout that fits their specific needs and lifestyle demands. “We have almost 50 different floor plans in this building because it’s such a uniquely shaped building. It makes almost every unit a little different, depending on where it’s located,” Perez says.

Layout was key for Alan and Valerie as they were apartment hunting. Valerie, who loves to cook, knew she wanted a large kitchen. They also were both opposed to carpet, a prominent feature in their North Carolina apartment. “They have so many different apartments that you can rent here, so we were very cautious about where the sun came in. We wanted the living room close to the dining room. We wanted two bedrooms,” Valerie says. The unit they settled on meets all of their expectations. A large kitchen featuring a long island opens up into their dining space. The living room and a guest bedroom, now used as their daughter’s nursery, are off to the left. Their light-colored walls are decorated with paintings and art, several of which

The Vue’s amenities are a big draw. “Our pool courtyard is the largest courtyard we offer onsite and it’s the one that gets the most use,” Perez says. The pool area exudes a resort vibe, complete with bright orange lounge seating, string lights and several fountains. The 3-and-a-halffoot-deep heated wading pool is open to residents during the warm months. The courtyard is rounded out with two fire pits, two gas grills, a fireplace and a flat screen TV. “(From the street), you don’t even know all of this is in here. It’s very exclusive to our residents, which they love,” Perez says. Two additional courtyards – the garden courtyard, meant as a quiet space, and the oasis courtyard, serving as a place to entertain guests – complete the outdoor space.

But the amenities aren’t limited to the outdoors. Fitness enthusiasts enjoy the indoor yoga studio, which features an on-demand fitness television and three stationary bikes and is home to free yoga classes offered by two residents who are certified yoga instructors. In addition, there’s a two-story fitness studio, complete with cardio machines, treadmills, TRX equipment and weight machines. Art lovers can stroll through the fourth-floor art gallery, where canvas prints and photographs by local artists are displayed on floating walls. Rich cherry wood floors give the open space a luxurious feel. The Vue also serves as a prime location to host social gatherings. The terrace, a sleek, contemporary space, features indoor and outdoor seating, two TVs, a built-in wall fireplace, a bar area and a long table with ample seating. The lounge, which opens up to the pool courtyard and

features exposed wood beams and walls painted in rich colors, houses a pool table, three TVs, lounge seating, high-top tables and a small kitchen. The amenities at The Vue served as a selling point for the Levys. “The common areas are awesome – the fitness center, the lounges. We did Pesach with all of my family in the terrace. It has a lot of things that you can use just because you live here,” Valerie says.

Family time Like the Levys, many Vue residents are parents of young children. About 30 kids live onsite, and almost all are under the age of 8, Perez says. Luckily for parents, The Vue offers a kids’ play place. The room features yellow and gray walls and brightly colored furniture and carpet. The space is split up into different activity areas, so whether a child wants to play dress-up or create a drawing, he or she has ample space to do so.

Some of the parents have even organized playgroups within the building. “From what I’ve seen, there are a lot of young moms around,” Valerie says. “We’ve seen a lot of young people starting families. The people are nice, and when you walk around, everybody says ‘hi.’” The Vue is also in close proximity to several day cares – a selling point for many young families. On top of that, The Vue offers grocery delivery service through Miles Farmers Market in Solon – an option popular for any busy resident, but especially young parents. Having everything located under one roof is no accident. Whether catering to a busy, young professional or a retiree looking to slow down and relax, The Vue strives to make residents’ lives as convenient and hassle-free as possible. “It’s a full lifestyle here,” Perez says. “That’s kind of what we go for: a full experience, a full lifestyle, right here at home.” js

On perhaps a more practical level, Heidi O’Neill, owner of O’Neill Landscape Design and Installation in Russell Township, says she sees more and more people investing in their homes and outdoor living spaces. “Traditional is always popular, but trending are sleek, simple, well-designed spaces that are flexible to accommodate many entertaining options,” she says. “I am consistently asked to design outdoor kitchens, vegetable gardens, pizza ovens, pools, patios, decks, fire pits and outdoor fireplace areas.” Irrigation and lighting are popular as well, says O’Neill, a landscape architect. “Maintenance is always a concern, and I take time to educate my clients on the maintenance requirements of their new landscape,” she says. O’Neill Landscape Design and Installation, in business since 2004, offers complete design services for residential, commercial and public entities, O’Neill says. “A great landscape begins with a well-designed plan,” she says. “I consider this the most important part of the process. over several years, as long as there is a well-thought-out master plan as a guide.” The firm also offers a full range of installation services, O’Neill says. “If it’s outside, we can build it,” she says. “We can tackle small yards or large, very complicated outdoor projects. We offer creative, well-thought-out solutions to difficult problems and also offer large estate maintenance services.” Meanwhile, Perfect Power Wash, based in Akron, offers power washing services for homes, decks, concrete and commercial applications. Mike Palubiak, owner of Perfect Power Wash, says his company – in its 16th year of servicing all of Northeast Ohio – offers three primary services to residential customers: cleaning of roofs, siding of homes and flat surfaces, such as concrete areas. “Our job is to maintain and beautify residents’ homes and keep them clean so they have good longevity and look beautiful,” he says. “It’s so important for people to be having it done on an annual basis. This is an investment; for a few hundred dollars today, you will keep your home clean for a long time to come.

It’s important to keep your home clean as well.” Palubiak says an increasingly common issue for area homeowners is gloeocapsa magma, a blackish, airborne algae that thrives on moisture and seems to have an affinity for material used in roofing products. Left unchecked, it can damage shingles, he says. “This started in southern states, such as Florida, and we’ve started seeing a lot of it here in the last 11 or 12 years,”

he says. “Asphalt shingle roofs have a limestone filler to give them weight, and this algae is thriving on the roof and eating the limestone filler. You don’t want this on your roof because it looks terrible and it’s degrading your roofing material. “At Perfect Power Wash, we follow the exact specs of cleaning that algae correctly and safely. We do a soft wash, a very gentle cleaning, and apply algaecide to the roof material and it kills 100 percent of any living algae or organisms on the roof.” js
