FROM THE EDITOR

Developing great chemistry

C

hances are, if you’ve made it to a fifth date with someone, things are headed in the right direction. Maybe you’ve not only met their friends or coworkers but have actually hung out together, and perhaps you’re already taking the first steps toward exclusivity. In other words, things might be looking serious. Well, here we are with the fifth annual Jstyle Singles Issue, and you know what? We’re going strong and I think our chemistry – in this case, with readers – is good. Including the eight eligible Jewish singles featured in this issue, we’ve now featured 51 men and women as Jstyle Singles, some of whom are now married or engaged. In fact, one such former Jstyle Single, Barry Guttman, met his future wife, Samantha Miller, after Miller’s mother saw his profile in the inaugural Jstyle Singles Issue in 2014 and started working her connections. Barry and Samantha were the focus of a Nuptials feature in the Cleveland Jewish News earlier this year, which you can read by visiting cjn.org/nuptials. You can revisit Guttman’s

appearance in the Jstyle Singles Issue by going to bit.ly/JstyleISSUU. We certainly hope every single in this year’s issue enjoys similar success. As for the location of this year’s Singles Issue fashion shoot, we visited the Van Aken District in Shaker Heights. Heralded as the city’s downtown, its centerpiece is a new mixed-use development that’s arisen where Chagrin and Van Aken boulevards and Warrensville Center Road all meet. It’s a dynamic space that offers plenty of shopping and date-worthy dining options. Of course, it isn’t entirely about dating. Also in this issue: We stopped by The Aster in Beachwood for a peek inside one of the newest upscale apartment buildings in Northeast Ohio, and we took a dive into the menu at Pinstripes, the Italian-American

bistro that features bocce and bowling at Pinecrest in Orange. We also visited Temple Israel Ner Tamid for a closer look at its Peanut Butter & Judaism program, the 10th anniversary of which is this month. I had the privilege of chronicling the evening, from the beginning of a Friday night Shabbat service to the late-night return to the Mayfield Heights temple, with all of the peanut butter and jelly sandwich making and delivering to Cleveland’s homeless that took place in between. In reading that feature, I hope you find their brand of tzedakah as inspiring as I did. And if you’re single, I hope you also find dating inspiration in this issue of Jstyle.

Recapturing a Youthful Look with Neck Contouring The impact of neck imperfections, due to time passage or genetic disposition, on one’s appearance is often overlooked. The neck shows signs of aging, sometimes even more prematurely than the face. Due to the effects of gravity, the skin of the neck sags over time. Genetics can drive the next phase of the flawed neck with fat deposits that create a double chin, even in young age. Fortunately, international educator, Bahman Guyuron, M.D., is an expert Bahman Guyuron, MD in performing surgical procedures for minimizing and even eradicating imperfections in the neck and chin. Neck contouring surgery can remove sagging skin, eliminate unwanted fat and tighten and tone the neck for a more youthful and pleasing appearance. Dr. Guyuron performs this procedure on its own or as part of a facelift. During a comprehensive consultation to determine an individual’s candidacy for neck surgery, Dr. Guyuron will evaluate the amount of excess fat and skin in the neck and confirm the presence of at least one of the following conditions: • Loose, sagging skin • Extraneous fat deposits under the chin • Protruding glands • Muscle bands • Weak chin Neck lift procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, using general anesthesia or a combination of medications. The surgery may include skin tightening, fat sculpting, muscle tightening, trimming or removal of the enlarged glands, in various combination. Following surgery, patients will experience mild to moderate swelling and bruising, which typically resolves within a week to 10 days. Patients are asked to avoid strenuous exercise and activities for up to three weeks. For those whose concerns are focused on the symmetry or definition of the chin, Dr. Guyuron may recommend chin augmentation or reduction surgery. These procedures can have a dramatic impact on the overall appearance of the face when used to correct a chin that is either too small or too prominent. During chin augmentation, also known as genioplasty, an implant is placed within the jaw, or the chin bone is modified or moved forward to achieve a more balanced look. Chin reduction, used to correct a chin that juts out or is deemed too prominent, refines the overall look of the chin to bring it into better proportion with the face. Patients recovering from chin surgery will likely experience some bruising, swelling and tenderness. They, too, should avoid vigorous exercise until Dr. Guyuron approves a return to normal activities. For those who desire a less invasive option for enhancing the appearance of the chin and neck, Dr. Guyuron offers an innovative therapy using a drug called Kybella. Treatments are individually tailored to each person’s needs, so the number of sessions needed will be determined based on an individual’s profile and goals. Dr. Guyuron has thirty-eight years of experience in the field of facial plastic surgery for men and women with aesthetic and reconstructive needs. Internationally, he teaches plastic surgeons how to perform neck and other procedures safely and successfully. This year alone he was invited to 13 different countries to share his knowledge with his colleagues. To learn more about these and other options for improving the appearance of the neck, contact Zeeba Clinic at 440-461-7999.

eing single can have its perks, from not having to share your sufganiyot at Chanukah to not having to explain why you wanted to spend a few extra days in Israel before returning home. In the grand scheme of things, however, most are looking for someone with whom they can swap summer camp stories or kvell with following a proud professional accomplishment. And besides, how many times do singles really want to field questions from their bubbe and zeyde about whether they’ve yet met a nice Jewish boy or Jewish girl? To help bring an end to the latter, Jstyle went to the new Van Aken District in Shaker Heights to photograph the fifth annual Singles Issue, which features four women and four men from Northeast Ohio’s Jewish community. Selected from reader nominations, these members of the tribe are accomplished, engaging, intelligent, and most importantly, eligible. My friends and family describe me as a laid-back and low-key guy. A native Clevelander, I love so many things this city has to offer (like the West Side Market and Mitchell’s Ice Cream). I’m a huge sports fan, and you’ll find me at FirstEnergy Stadium most fall Sundays. I’m close with my family – even my sister, who made me do this. I am kind, loyal and have a great sense of humor. (I went to see Aziz Ansari several weeks ago - bonus points if you did too!) I am an advocate for the city of Cleveland; I love just about everything this city has to offer. I like to stay active by trying new restaurants and going to concerts, comedy shows, sporting events and festivals. he Van Aken District is Shaker Heights’ new downtown district, the center of which is a newly constructed mixed-use development that features a compelling mix of local and national retail, office spaces and contemporary apartment living, and offers a variety of dining experiences. Though many might associate Van Aken primarily with the new development taking shape at the northwest corner of Warrensville Center Road and Chagrin Boulevard, it actually extends north along Warrensville Center to the intersection with Almar Drive and west along Chagrin to Farnsleigh Road. Within those boundaries are several Jewish-owned businesses to check out. Here’s a sample: • Double Rainbow, owned by Meg Ratner, is a lifestyle and clothing boutique for girls that carries items fit for babies, teenagers and all ages in between. • Juma Gallery, owned by David E. Weiss, is a place to discover the power of art, define one’s personal design aesthetic and express it through clothing, jewelry, art and home accessories. • Lucy’s Sweet Surrender, owned by Michael Feigenbaum, is a full-service bakery that takes pride in crafting delectable confections with quality ingredients and authenticity.

• Luster, owned by Tamar Brecher and Robin McCann, is a gift boutique that features items ranging from functional homemade goods and statement jewelry to accessories, handbags and bath products. • Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink, owned by James Beard Award-winning chef/owner Michael Schwartz, is a restaurant that will showcase Schwartz’s fresh, simple, pure approach – clean, vibrant flavors built on what’s fresh and in season. • Mitchell’s Homemade Ice Cream, owned by Mike and Pete Mitchell, is an ice cream shop that specializes in hand-crafted frozen treats featuring locally and responsibly sourced ingredients. • RMS Investment Corp., which is the developer for the project, is the private investment manager for members of the Ratner, Miller and Shafran families, the founding families of Cleveland-based Forest City Realty Trust Inc. Jon Ratner currently serves as principal. • Room Service, owned by Jennie Doran and Andrew Worm, is a lifestyle boutique featuring gifts, home goods, apparel and accessories in a space that invites wonder and discovery. • Shaker Rocks, owned by Annie and Spencer Richman, will be a full-scale rock-climbing gym that will also feature top roping, lead climbing, bouldering, speed climbing, autobelaying, and a yoga studio and fitness equipment.

BEAUTY

Winter wonderland By Becky Raspe If you can look past the harsh and sometimes unforgiving conditions old man winter brings to Northeast Ohio every year, you’ll realize one of the best things about the region’s cold-weather months is the natural blush that comes from standing outside for a few minutes. Along with those rosy cheeks may also come red-but-not-chapped lips and wind-swept hair, but thankfully, you can achieve all of those wintry looks without stepping foot outside.

DAPPER MAN

Warm and fuzzy By Becky Raspe

Though it’s unlikely the early arrival of cold weather surprised many Northeast Ohioans, it was no less a stark reminder that winter is coming. To protect against bone-chilling wind gusts and blanketing waves of lake effect snow, you’ll need a good coat – and this season, when shaking up timeless looks is on trend, you won’t have to sacrifice style for warmth.

he last place one might expect to find someone from the Jewish community during Shabbat is the dimly lit back parking lot of a Cleveland church. But that’s exactly where three Temple Israel Ner Tamid congregants – and their rabbi – were on an unseasonably cold Friday night in mid-November. In fact, churches, shelters and transitional housing units – any place that provides sanctuary to Northeast Ohio’s homeless – is where members of the Reform temple in Mayfield Heights have been going every Friday night for a decade. The reason for their weekly visits? In a word, tzedakah. More formally, it’s to carry out acts of charity by way of the temple’s Peanut Butter & Judaism program, through which temple members make and deliver peanut butter and jelly sandwiches – typically 150 to 200 each week – to those in need. “Tzedakah, making the world a better place, is part of our mission as a congregation,” says Rabbi Matthew Eisenberg, the temple’s spiritual leader. “This is what we do.” That’s true. The “small but mighty” congregation of about 240 families – Eisenberg says “it’s like The Little Engine That Could” – has a history of helping others. Notably, Temple Israel Ner Tamid packed six semi-trailer trucks with goods to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and responded similarly to hurricanes Harvey, Sandy and others. It’s currently working with an outside charity to send refrigerators to Puerto Ricans whose electricity is slowly being restored following hurricanes Irma and Maria,

which wiped out power across the island in 2017. But where those examples of compassion and kindness assist others in faraway places in response to sporadic natural disasters, Peanut Butter & Judaism has been a model of consistency in helping those closer to home endure the pervasive challenges of hunger and homelessness. What’s more, it clearly resonates with congregants in

a meaningful way. So much so that during the Shabbat service on Dec. 14, they’ll celebrate the program’s 10-year anniversary.

Extending helping hands The business card Peter Freimark hands to those he meets doesn’t list a job title or company name. Instead, it lists a calling: “I help other people.” Freimark, whose gentle demeanor and soft-spoken nature make him immediately

approachable, has been a driving force behind many of the temple’s disaster relief efforts, and it was he who started Peanut Butter & Judaism a decade ago. The idea came to him during a hazardous drive along a snow-blanketed Interstate 480 that December. “I just thought to myself, ‘There are all these homeless people who are going to be on the streets this cold, snowy night, and I get to go home,

take a warm shower, have a refrigerator full of food and sleep in a comfy bed. The least I can do for them is see if I can get them some food,’” he says. “I decided to buy some peanut butter, jelly, bags, bread and gloves and asked the rabbi’s permission because I felt it would be a real nice thing to not only pray, not only eat, but to do something tangible for other people.” Eisenberg recalled his answer to Freimark was, without hesitation, simply “yes.” “As you find in life, there are people who talk about (tzedakah), or there are people who do it, or there are people who talk about it and do it,” he says. “At a small congregation, you can become an active participant very easily. And when somebody comes up with an idea, if it sounds like an interesting and significant idea that will be kind of low-tech and touch people’s lives, there really is only one good answer. It isn’t ‘maybe.’ The answer is ‘yes.’” Sandwiches were made and taken to downtown Cleveland, and with that, their outreach began. Congregants exhibited even more enthusiasm for the

project the following week, Freimark says, and over the course of 10 years, the temple has never missed a Friday of delivering peanut butter and jelly. “I can’t recall any Friday night – and there have been ones where the drive has been interesting – when we’ve said, ‘No, the weather is too bad,’ because we know they’re out there,” he says. “If they can be out there, certainly we can be (too).” Special events haven’t interrupted Peanut Butter & Judaism either, says Freimark, noting those with a Friday night simcha planned know in advance that sandwich making will take place during – or be a part of – their celebration. He thinks the reason the program has been embraced is straightforward. “I think the main reason we do it is the simplest of reasons: It’s the right thing to do. You can get very philosophical about it, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but if you break it down to its simplest form, everybody needs to eat every day of the year. And some of these people – for

Rather than blaming them or questioning them, and no matter what your age or what your situation is, if you need food, we’re going to give you a sandwich or two.” Freimark feels congregants also enjoy that their efforts through Peanut Butter & Judaism go directly to those in need. Temple members either

buy all of the food and supplies or solicit donations from local stores and cafes, and all of the labor is volunteer. In other words, he says, there’s “zero overhead.” “People really feel they’re doing something to help humanity,” he says. “And for people downtown, or wherever we take them, to know someone they’ve never met cared enough to

do something, I think that has to be something that makes them feel a little better and suffer a little less a little sooner.” Though the program started with him, Freimark concedes he doesn’t make the trip downtown as frequently as he used to. “Because during the early years, I did it almost every week myself or with someone else, I try to let other people have the experience,” he says. “I certainly don’t go out anywhere near what I used to – and that’s OK. We have a lot of people, a lot of volunteers.”

Acting out altruistically One such volunteer is Brett Lipton, whose personality is as big as his 6-foot-2 frame. As chairman of the temple’s sandwich committee, he ensures supplies are in stock and orchestrates the postShabbat service sandwich making. He finds personal fulfillment through his position, which he’s held for about five years.

“It gives me purpose,” he says. “I’m depended on. That’s a good feeling, to be depended on by multiple people.” Directed by Lipton, the sandwich assembly line is a sight to behold. On that mid-November Friday night, the degree of efficiency and sense of purpose with which about a dozen congregants produced peanut butter and jelly sandwiches would have been the envy of any industrial manufacturer. When the dust settles each week, they’ve used 15 to 20 loaves of bread and about a dozen jars each of peanut butter and jelly. Lipton also often leads the trips to Cleveland, though on this night, it was Eisenberg – donning a Brandeis blue Temple Israel Ner Tamid ball cap that says “Be a mensch” across its front panels – behind the wheel of the temple’s multipurpose delivery van. The first stop was at St. Malachi Parish, near the busy intersection of Detroit Avenue and West 25th Street in Cleveland’s Ohio City

neighborhood. There, the nonprofit Metanoia Project organizes a shelter that’s open only during Northeast Ohio’s cold-weather months for homeless people unwilling or unable to access other facilities. This night was the first of the season it was open. Lipton and Shaun Friedman, one of the temple’s religious school teachers, were greeted by shelter representatives and exchanged introductions. They then carried boxes of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches inside the parish, which teemed with overnight inhabitants. The encounter was brief but the exchange was significant and meaningful. From there, the team, which included congregant Jennifer

Woo, drove around the church to look for those who sought refuge outside. They then drove around Public Square and Mall A in downtown Cleveland to do the same. When they find homeless who might be sleeping on the streets, which they did, they’re careful not to disturb them. Instead, they’ll leave a sandwich or two near the man or woman so they’ll see them upon waking. As Freimark explained earlier that night, “We’re not looking for recognition, we’re not looking to pity them, we’re trying to help them.” A final delivery that night was made on the outskirts of downtown at North Point Transitional Housing, where all

New wheels for more meals

Eisenberg drives the temple’s delivery van back to Mayfield Heights at about 11:30 p.m. after delivering hundreds of sandwiches to Cleveland’s homeless.

remaining sandwiches were left. Shabbat service that night started at 7:30. The sandwich making began at about 9:45, and by the time the van returned to Temple Israel Ner Tamid from Cleveland, it was midnight. Their commitment of time, energy and resources is a testament to who they are. “The Jewish people have a mission. We’re supposed to be a light unto the nations,” Eisenberg says. “When you do good things, you shed light. It illuminates dark places. This is what you’re supposed to do.”

Learning life lessons Instances of homelessness can be found throughout Jewish history, from Adam and Eve being expelled from the Garden of Eden to the Israelites wandering in the wilderness for 40 years to a universal sense of homelessness that persisted until 1948, when the state of Israel was established. In that sense, Jews can readily relate to the challenges, and to many, combating them is a calling. Eisenberg’s sermon

that night covered themes related to charitable giving, and even before that, passages like “We are Israel, schooled in the suffering of the oppressed” and “You shall not stand idle while your neighbor bleeds” were read responsively from the siddur. “The kinds of eternal truths about, you know, to love your neighbor as yourself, from Leviticus 19:18 – as true as that was thousands of years ago, it’s true today,” Eisenberg says. “And most of these people, they’re my neighbors. I don’t live near them, but they’re human beings endowed with a spark of divinity, and we have to take care of one another. That’s the way we think about it in Judaism.” Freimark feels participating in Peanut Butter & Judaism has helped fellow congregants better understand what it looks like to achieve that ideal. “The closer contact you have with people, the more you realize we have a shared humanity. Sometimes, if you get someone else to paint a picture of who people are, there can be

The van Temple Israel Ner Tamid uses to deliver its peanut butter and jelly sandwiches has an appropriate vanity license plate: “PBNJ 4U.” The plate adds to the van’s personality, but other traits – like the traction control alert system that, without exception and regardless of driving conditions, delivers a shrill 30-second alarm every five minutes – are less charming. “Usually, I start singing a Hebrew song and it’ll turn off eventually,” says Rabbi Matthew Eisenberg, explaining his coping mechanism. “Otherwise, this thing drives me crazy.” He also slaps the dashboard to keep a beat while he sings – an action that grows more forceful as the 30-minute drive from Mayfield Heights to downtown Cleveland progresses. The van – a 2007 Ford Econoline that also transports the temple’s religious school children on trips – has seen better days. It has 264,000 miles on it and requires $1,000 to $2,000 in repairs and maintenance each year. “With all of the mileage and new parts that are now old parts, it just seems like we need something newer,” Eisenberg says. So, in October, the temple started a GoFundMe campaign in hopes of raising $15,000 toward a van. One was found – on Dec. 4, Eisenberg was scheduled to pick up a 2014 Chevrolet Express with only 40,000 miles on it – but funds are still needed to help pay for it. As of early December, $1,170 had been pledged toward the campaign goal. The temple’s longtime van was obtained by a congregant four years ago through phil•an•thro•pi•a, Executive Caterers president and founder Harlan Diamond’s annual community fundraising event at Landerhaven. A local taxi company donated several used vehicles that year, and the van relieved congregants from using their own cars and trucks to make the weekly trip downtown on behalf of Peanut Butter & Judaism. For more information or to donate to Temple Israel Ner Tamid’s campaign for a new van, visit bit.ly/TINTvan. – Michael C. Butz negative stereotypes that are not true,” he says. “We should only love other people. We should love other peoples, too – and poor people are a class, homeless people are a class. There are some great people out there who are homeless, and there are some not-great people – but they’re still people. We need to welcome the stranger in many different ways.” Eisenberg thinks Peanut Butter & Judaism has taught his congregation meaningful life lessons. “Most of the kids in our religious school, and even most of the adults, we live in fairly comfortable surroundings. If

you get out of your comfort zone a little bit and go into the city, where there is real difficulty for people … we can help people,” he says. “And when you view this, when you participate, it gives you a sense of humility. It humbles you – if you’re open to that. You kvetch less about your own circumstances because you’ve been reminded of how far you can fall – and thank God you haven’t fallen that far. You have your own aggravations, everyone has mishegas, but it could be far worse for you. Be grateful for what you have. Every week, this drive is a reminder of that.” js

Pour to expand

Charlie Eisenstat is expanding his coffee empire. The man behind Pour Cleveland – the popular downtown coffee shop that celebrated its fifth anniversary this past Thanksgiving – is seeking to open a small-batch roastery, Pour Coffee Co., in early 2019 in Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood. Pour Coffee Co. will be wholesaledriven, seeking to sell its coffee to local coffee shops, bakeries and restaurants, Eisenstat tells Jstyle. It will also be available for purchase online and at Pour Cleveland. Speaking of the latter, Pour Coffee Co. coffee will eventually serve as Pour Cleveland’s primary domestic coffee for pour-overs, drip coffee, cold brews, espressos and more. (The Tremont space will serve as a roasting and training facility, not as a cafe.) Eisenstat, who’s joined on this business venture by attorney and coffee enthusiast Anthony Lazzaro, hopes once they obtain a zoning variance and permits from the city, Pour Coffee Co. will build a strong local base before eventually gaining global appeal. Driftwood develops

The Driftwood Group is increasing its presence in one of Northeast Ohio’s most dynamic districts. The restaurant and catering company, led by restaurateur Scott Kuhn and chef Chris Hodgson, will open Republic Food and Drink in late January or early February in downtown Cleveland’s Playhouse Square. The 145-seat restaurant will specialize in “in-your-face, old-school American food,” Kuhn tells Jstyle, adding prime rib, loaded potatoes and classic cocktails will be among the menu options. Republic will open in the Euclid Avenue space formerly occupied by Otto Moser and join fellow Driftwood eateries Bin 216, Cibrèo Italian Kitchen (both in Playhouse Square) and Hodge’s in downtown Cleveland. To ready a 2015 Jstyle feature about Kuhn and Driftwood, visit jstylemagazine.com/getting-the-drift.

Paladar renovates

Paladar Latin Kitchen & Rum Bar, a culinary staple at Eton Chagrin Boulevard in Woodmere for 11 years, is getting a makeover. The restaurant is the flagship eatery for Paladar Restaurant Group, which was founded by Andy Himmel and includes several BOMBA Tacos & Rum locations in Northeast Ohio. Paladar is scheduled to close for renovations from Jan. 7 to Feb. 6, 2019. Among the upgrades will be a revamped bar area that allows for more seating, updated bathrooms, new furniture and the introduction of a revamped guacamole bar, which will be the focal point of the dining room, showcasing the preparation of craftyour-own guacamole orders. Prior to temporarily closing, Paladar will host a New Year’s Eve event Dec. 28-31 featuring a three-course prix fixe menu.

eachwood native Dale Schwartz has wonderful memories of gathering with family and friends over a meal, whether they shared a table at home or in a Northeast Ohio restaurant. Regarding the latter, Schwartz, who now lives in suburban Chicago, has long been a fan of his hometown’s delicatessen fare, in addition to which he savors pizza from the original Geraci’s on Warrensville Center Road in University Heights. Moreland Hills resident Larry Kadis shares Schwartz’s appetite for Geraci’s. He also fondly recalls trips to Draeger’s Candy and Ice Cream at Van Aken Center in Shaker Heights, Clark’s Restaurant at Shaker Square in Cleveland, and ordering hamburgers and grilled onions from Mawby’s, which had several East Side locations. While Schwartz and Kadis aren’t out to create replicas of the food of their youth, together, they aim to bring a level of both comfort and excitement to Greater Clevelanders’ dining experience by way of Pinstripes, a sleek, 35,000-square-foot, open-kitchen restaurant that includes a bowling alley and all-weather bocce courts. Schwartz is founder and CEO of Pinstripes, and Kadis is an investor and board member. Pinstripes has 10 restaurants and is growing nationwide. The Northeast Ohio location that recently opened at the Pinecrest mixed-use development in Orange is just a stone’s throw from where one of Schwartz’s childhood hangouts, Pepper Lanes, used to be. Schwartz says the Italian-American bistro concept for Pinstripes marinated in his mind for years. “About 30 years ago, when I was living in New York, I was almost going to buy a bowling alley on the Upper West Side and transform it into kind of a quality upscale bistro with bowling,” he says. “And then about 13 (or) 14 years ago, when I decided to finally start the Pinstripes concept, I was on the West Coast and visited a bocce venue – an indoor-

sure the profiles – in flavor, texture and presentation – meet his standards. “It’s a team effort,” Schwartz says. “Our executive chef often composes a number of menu dishes and then I get quite involved refining.” It can be a time-consuming process, he says. “(For) one of our signature dishes, we do a homemade ricotta cheese gnocchi with cubes of yellowtail ahi tuna on top marinated in lime juice and cilantro,” Schwartz says. “We went through 22 iterations of that dish to just get the right combination and size of gnocchi and the right flavor profile of some of the sauces and the right size of the cubes of the yellowtail ahi tuna.” Each dish goes through a similar vetting and refining process. “(With) all of our dishes, we’re very sensitive to the flavor profile and the layers of flavors and the different textures and the presentation of the dish,” Schwartz says. “We spend a considerable amount of time with every dish just getting it right.”

Pizza with pizazz Pizza, a childhood favorite of both Schwartz and Kadis, is on the menu in

its most familiar form and in the guise of its popular doppelgänger, flatbread. Kadis is a fan of Pinstripes’ roasted vegetable flatbread, which includes fresh mozzarella, grilled zucchini, red onion and asparagus, as well as the chicken and avocado club flatbread – without the bacon, and with mozzarella instead of provolone. Just as less can be more, sometimes simple is satisfying. Kadis also likes Pinstripes’ margherita pizza, a menu classic that features handcrushed tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and basil. About that crust: Is it thin or thick? The answer: thin and thinner. “Our pizza is thin crust,” Schwartz says. “(For) our flatbread, we take the pizza dough and we run it through our pasta machine to make it even thinner. Our flatbreads are even thinner with that kind of crunch that you get with a flatbread.”

Menu diversity, from scratch For the past year, Kadis, a member of B’nai Jeshurun Congregation in Pepper Pike, has sworn off red meat partly as a dietary preference and partly as a nod to Jewish dietary laws. For years, he

says, he has forsaken pork, but only in the last year has he decided not to eat red meat. Still, he says, Pinstripes leaves him plenty of options: the hummus avocado platter, the tomato mozzarella bruschetta and the maple-glazed salmon are among his favorites. While the menu offers classic American sandwiches and burgers, it also has salads to his taste, particularly the Caesar, which features romaine hearts, baby kale, classic dressing and black sesame crostini. “I think a lot of the sides are really terrific,” Kadis adds. “I think we have a really diverse menu.” Kadis knows consistency is key for any restaurant. “You want to have something unique,” he says. “But the thing that really matters is to be consistent.” “We’re almost a 100 percent scratch kitchen, so we prepare and make most of our own sauces,” adds Schwartz,

a member of Am Shalom, a Reform temple in the Village of Glencoe, Ill. “A good number of our pastas are homemade. “We make our own house bread, which we bring to the tables,” Schwartz says of a rosemary focaccia, adding Pinstripes makes its own pesto sauce, pizza dough, gelato and sorbet.

A side of fun and family Perhaps the most important thing Pinstripes delivers isn’t any one particular dish, though. With the expanded, nearly ubiquitous use of technology as a way to create virtual connection, Schwartz talks about the need for face-to-face connection over a meal or a shared activity – like bowling or bocce. “We all know the circumstances of families or friends sitting at the table and everybody’s staring at their phones as opposed to really conversing and engaging with each other,” Schwartz says.

That is not what he wants to happen at Pinstripes. “So, what we do is just celebrate those real connections,” Schwartz says. “We’re not a sports bar, we don’t over-TV it. We certainly don’t overtechnology it, and we want people connecting.” Schwartz remembers a time when it was easier to connect with people face to face. “Childhood was phenomenal,” he recalls. “Nothing better than three generations enjoying a meal. Nothing better. Nothing better than the discussion, the laughter, the sharing of the food (and) the sharing of the wine – if I was old enough.” And after reading “Miriam’s Kitchen” by Elizabeth Ehrlich, Schwartz understood how Jewish culture and tradition play out in food. “She writes about the food coupled with a family occasion,” he says. “I’ll never forget the book.” js

here should we live? Ethan Moses and his girlfriend, Marisa Martin, asked themselves this over the summer, when they decided it was time to live together, time for a merger, time to move out of their separate apartments.

For one thing, Moses, who works in inside sales for National General Insurance in downtown Cleveland, and Martin, who works at Gilmour Academy in Gates Mills, knew they wanted more room. Although they could have stayed in their respective apartments in Shaker Heights and downtown Cleveland, the layout and amenities at The Aster – a four-story, 180-unit upscale apartment building at 3600 Park East Drive in Beachwood – also proved persuasive. They moved in Aug. 1. “We decided to move in together and wanted a bit more space and really liked the amenities, the layouts and the location. Plus, my parents live in Shaker, and it was still close enough,” says Moses, who attends Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple in Beachwood on High Holy Days and the occasional Friday night on special occasions. “We started looking a month before, met

the leasing agent, gave them our names (and) they got back to us. It was easy.” They looked at other complexes, including those in Beachwood. They even considered staying where they were. But who were they to pass up such Aster lures as a community game room, which includes free pinball machines; a shared common room, a place where they and their neighbors can congregate and socialize; and soon, a place where Bronny, their 1-year-old Jack Russell Terrier-poodle mix named after former Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James, can play. “There’s a dog park opening in the building and we love dogs,” Moses says. “That’s going to be superconvenient.” Although he regularly patronizes the Mandel Jewish Community Center “right around the corner,” Moses also enjoys the fact that The Aster has a gym and offers use

of a Peloton, “an on-demand bicycle with a TV.” And, while they gave passing thought to living in downtown Cleveland, Moses says sharing an apartment at The Aster is “a little less expensive than living downtown.” Their monthly rent at the Aster is $2,100, Moses says. They occupy a two-bedroom apartment with an open layout, which, Moses suggests, makes for easier flow. “In my old apartment, there was a closed-off kitchen and a separate living room,” he says. At the Aster, “the kitchen and the living room are sort of one space, which we like.”

Inside The Aster Not surprisingly, the palette at the Aster is earth-toned and designed to soothe, even to cocoon. There are honeycolored walls, beige ceilings, and faux-wood floors in the apartments. There is discreet

tiling in various shades of brown in the hallways and the common room. There are Southwestern overtones to the palette, and granite countertops in the kitchens provide a rugged elegance. The kitchens, of course, feature the latest, most energy-efficient appliances, along with lowimpact décor ruled by black cabinetry and softened by light-colored walls and ceilings. The dining room table and gaily designed chairs extend the cozy ambience. The Aster offers onebedroom apartments of 708 to 960 square feet; two-bedroom units of 1,025 to 1,230 square feet; and three-bedroom rentals of 1,504 square feet. Monthly costs start in the “low $1,600s” and top off at $2,875, according to Leslie Parker of The Laramar Group, the Aster Apartments’ Chicago- and Denver-based developer. the heated parking garage fluctuates by apartment lease. There is a grilling area, a pool and a fitness room. There is video security; luxury touches include a 19-inch TV inside the master bathroom mirrors and heated tile floors. The Laramar Group suggests The Aster offers

a level of luxury unique to the Beachwood market.

What a region A statement from Parker, regional manager for The Laramar Group, touts The Aster as something extra-special in an extra-special location.

“It is no secret that with some of the highest-ranked schools and best community amenities of any (city) in the

country, Beachwood is one of the best places to live in Ohio,” she says. “There is a strong need for new luxury

rental housing in the area, especially for an alternative to high-rise living in the downtown area.”

In addition to community amenities, Beachwood offers advantageous geography, says Parker, suggesting the way the city is situated around Interstates 271 and 480 and U.S. Route 422 and retail destinations such as Eton Chagrin Boulevard, Pinecrest, Legacy Village and Beachwood Place add to The Aster’s appeal. “Close proximity to three major highways, some of the best upscale shopping and dining in the area, and access to many offices and medical clinics make this area a highly desirable place for people to live,” she says. “People seeking a convenient lifestyle, while maintaining easy access to major Cleveland thoroughfares, will find a community full of helpful services at every turn.” js

ROOM SERVICE Designers Furniture

OFFICE SPACE Simple and sleek design, neutral colors and functionality all are driving home office trends By Sean McDonnell

66

H

ome offices have remained common over the years, but with younger generations now furnishing their homes, those work spaces are changing in colors, styles and functionality, experts say.

Kathleen Bliss Goldfarb, a member of the American Society of Interior Designers with The Valley Design Team/Decorating Den Interiors in Chagrin Falls; Yaro Livits, owner of Designers Furniture in Mayfield Heights; and Ron Nandor, owner of Eastwood Furniture in Cleveland Heights, Medina and Kidron, all agree that the style of home offices has shifted in recent years. Bliss Goldfarb says clients who want to set up a home office are less concerned with aesthetics, putting function before form.

“The trend is so much simpler now than the way things used to be,” she says. Many home offices – as well as the rest of the homes younger people design – tend to not have as much color, Bliss Goldfarb says. Grays, whites and other neutral tones are in style, while the once traditional reddish-brown wooden desk is a thing of the past. “It’s almost like people are viewing life through black and white TVs,” she says, noting, however, that one hue seems to stand the test of time.

ROOM SERVICE “The darker blues are the one constant people can count on,” she says. “If you want to choose something that’s never going to go out of style, some kind of a mid- to darker blue is always going to be a good choice.” In addition to functionality, flexibility and personalization are important for home offices, says Bliss Goldfarb, explaining these needs have made many things in home offices mobile. “Casters and such are not just on chairs anymore, but they’re on the files and on bookcases and really any kind of piece that you might put in a space,” she says. That flexibility also takes the form of dual-purpose pieces of furniture. Bliss Goldfarb points to the Snooze Box, an oversized ottoman that pulls out to become a twin bed. She says younger people tend to have less space, so they want to get as much functionality out of their rooms as possible. “I would say the mantra today in home furnishings – especially in office furniture, because that is where we have to be really concerned with functionality – is truly flexibility and mobility,” she says. Nandor says the digital revolution has changed home office furniture. “Offices have changed dramatically over the past 10 years or so,” Nandor says, “just because the digital piece of this has changed.” While traditional desks were designed for larger desktop computers, printers and the ability to hide wires, changes in technology have made those features obsolete, he says.

Eastwood Furniture

“People have laptops instead of big towers and big monitors,” he says. “Those kinds of things are much more compact, so desks and desk units are getting much smaller.” Another big change comes from shifting from paper storage to digital storage, says Nandor, noting digitally storing documents has lessened or eliminated the need to factor paper storage into home office design. “Most people don’t have that kind of need anymore, so it’s changed office furniture dramatically,” he says. Many of Nandor’s customers are looking for open storage, like shelves, rather than drawers or cabinets. He says filing cabinets are rarely needed anymore. Another popular design feature Nandor has seen is live edge furniture, or furniture in which the designer incorporates the natural edge of the wood into its design. Livits says that many people in his store mix and match their furniture from different lines, trying to get a more creative look.

“They won’t get the matching file cabinet – or the matching anything,” he says. “They’ll use other accent pieces to highlight the look.” To get their own look, customers are even bringing in pieces meant for outside of the office, says Livits, offering as an example a buffet made for an entrance way or dining room that he’s seen customers use in their home offices. Such decisions add to the personalization of the space. “Something just to give it their own look and not make it look like the generic office,” he says. Whites and grays have been popular choices for home offices, Livits says, as have sleek and slim designs. He says his store constantly changes its selection to follow customers’ needs, and that those needs usually dictate what direction the store goes with its selection. “We never know why (the trends change),” Livits says. “It just sort of happens and we all follow the trends.” jjs s
