Joseph and Florence Mandel Jewish Day School was established in 1969 as The Agnon School by a dedicated group of educators and community leaders with a vision to create an option for parents that didn’t exist at the time – a quality Jewish community educational experience for their children.

school’s new mission statement is a commitment to ensure that we are providing our students with an educational foundation that is rich and rigorous, filled with joy and amazement, and infused with a deep sense of global responsibility.

The founders of the school including tonight’s Honorary Chairs, Bobby Goldberg and Peter Rzepka, surpassed this vision - and with the help of generous supporters - grew the Agnon/MJDS community from a single Kindergarten class to what is now a flourishing community of 350 students, 100 faculty members, alumni, grandparents, and friends.

As Cleveland’s only community day school, we are proud to be a community that is vibrant, diverse, and inclusive – one that is built on honoring the sacredness of the individual.

After numerous building moves, expansions, and renovations, Mandel JDS looks and feels very different than our humble beginnings of borrowing space in a synagogue in Cleveland Heights. With a new state-of-the-art campus and enhanced classroom technology, we are able to meet the needs of a very broad spectrum of students. Although our “look and feel” has been modernized, the essence of our school has not changed over the past half century. At the heart of our

It is indeed a phenomenal achievement - an achievement that bears the fruits of the work of both the professional and volunteer leadership of the school. Congratulations on your accomplishments of the past 50 years. The JEC volunteer leadership and the professional staff are proud to be your partners. Head of School Jay Leberman has had outstanding success as a leader, since he joined the school team. His invaluable experience, intellect, talent, and commitment to the values of MJDS are an example to all. We particularly value your role as one of our partners in providing Jewish education in our system. Jay continues in the tradition of school excellence developed over 17 years by Jerry Isaak-Shapiro. Jerry was in the forefront of developing a pluralistic vision for the MJDS; serving as an advocate for diverse needs of students; building a capital campaign as well as resource development. Dear Mandel JDS Community,

It's hard to put the pride we feel into words. We're delighted to be Honorary Chairs of the Jubilee and certainly very pleased that the school is honoring the Immerman Family, Nancy and Adam Levin, Hedy and David Adler and the Kangesser Foundation, Rochelle and Harley Gross and their family, and Jerry Isaak-Shapiro.

Each of our honorees has significantly contributed time and resources to get Mandel JDS to where it is today - not just a leader locally and nationally in the education of Jewish children, but a respected educational leader in project-based learning, the use of outdoor education, and differentiated learning. Mandel JDS would be vastly different, were it not for their involvement.

The support and leadership each of our honorees has given over the years has helped Agnon/Mandel grow to a school that we are all proud of - a school that educates our youth as well as any in Cleveland. But Mandel is about so much more than academic proficiency. To see the connection to Israel, the sense of responsibility and giving back, the leadership skills and the Jewish knowledge and pride that the students have has surpassed the hopes that we had all those years ago. It's a school that creates menschen, and that was certainly part of the dream.

Perhaps the best thanks we can give is seeing the success of our alumni. They immediately step into leadership roles in high school on the local, national, and international levels. They have the pride and the background to be able to speak knowledgably on college campuses, and many have returned to Cleveland and taken leadership roles in our community.

When we sat together 52 years ago with the idea of creating a school that would welcome Jews from all affiliations and those who had no affiliation, it was a dream. We couldn't imagine the school that we're celebrating today - housed in a physically beautiful building with teachers and leaders who have put together a quality education that is recognized by ISACS, the organization that also accredits Hawken, Hathaway Brown, Laurel, University School and Cleveland's other elite private schools. We couldn't imagine more than 320 students and the successes of our alumni, nor the vitality that fills the halls. When we get together to celebrate 100 years there will be others writing this letter - carrying on the pride and accomplishment we feel. Thank you for helping fulfill our dream and continuing to strengthen the work we poured our hearts into 51 years ago. HONOREE BIOS Hedy and David Adler / Kangesser Foundation Hedy and David carry on the tremendous legacy of Hedy’s parents, Helen and David Kangesser, z”l. Under Helen and David’s leadership, The Kangesser Foundation began providing financial support to The Agnon School/ Mandel JDS that dates back to 1975, when The Kangesser Foundation made a critical gift to help the school survive in its early years. That was followed by, among other gifts, substantial support to the Building Funds in 1983 and in 1996. The 1996 gift was one of the seed gifts for a major school addition, which included the Early Childhood wing, the courtyards, all classrooms west of the courtyards, and the Sanctuary, which is named for Helen and David. Under Hedy’s leadership, The Kangesser Foundation has continued to make numerous important gifts to the school including a substantial gift in 2004 to support a Tuition Rollback Program, a considerable gift in 2015 to the

Endowment Fund, a major gift to support the renovation of the gymnasium, and most recently a significant gift to the Building Fund as the school became Joseph and Florence Mandel Jewish Day School. Hedy was a member of The Agnon School/Mandel JDS Board of Trustees, and in 2015 she became a Lifetime Trustee. Hedy also served on the Head of School Search Committee in 2019, and Hedy and David were active volunteers in the Agnon Art Show, which for many years was the school’s largest fundraiser. Hedy and David are the proud parents of three Agnon alumni: Joshua, Rachel, and Sarah. They moved to Boston, Massachusetts in July 2019, but their support for Mandel JDS continues.

Rochelle and Harley Gross and Family Rochelle and Harley Gross have been instrumental for decades in the success of The Agnon School/Mandel JDS and continue their support today. Rochelle served as an officer on The Agnon School Board and was an active Art Show volunteer for many years. She co-chaired the Head of School Support Committee, working closely with Heads of School to establish goals and provide annual evaluation. Rochelle was named a Lifetime Trustee in 2013 for recognition of her years of service to The Agnon School. Rochelle and Harley have generously supported The Agnon School since 1985. In 1995-96, they were lead donors in the 1996 Capital Campaign and have continued that support ever since.

Beyond their ongoing support of Mandel JDS, Rochelle and Harley continue to make an impact locally, nationally and internationally. As President of the Board of the Jewish Federation of Cleveland, Harley expressed his commitment to the community in saying: “We’re all here to do good for the Jewish people - the sick and those in need whether here, in Israel, or around the world. We’re here for Jewish continuity and to build community.” He later added, “Each of us has a responsibility to contribute ideas, work, and financial resources. But our responsibility goes beyond this – we must bring others to this work.” Rochelle and Harley’s children are Gene, Abraham (Aviva) and Aaron (Alison). Aaron Gross went to The Agnon School, and currently serves as a member on the Board of Directors, and chairs the Construction/Facilities Committee.

HONOREE BIOS The Robert Immerman Family The Robert Immerman Family, led by patriarch “Bob,” has supported The Agnon School/Mandel JDS dating back to the early 1990s. Although Bob was always the ‘quiet guy’ behind the scenes, he had a major impact working to strengthen the school financially. His gift of more than $2,000,000 in capital support, in addition to his annual support, has enabled the school to upgrade the gym, auditorium, and last three phases of construction.

Bob’s three children are Rachel, Sarah, and David. Rachel and husband, Rabbi Raffi Glickman, are proud parents of Shira, Molly, Akiva, and Goldie. Upon graduation from Agnon, Rachel went on to graduate from Fuchs Mizrachi School, where she is currently on staff. Rachel and Rabbi Raffi were honored by Fuchs Mizrachi at their annual gala in April.

Bob is founder of InterDesign and has served on numerous Boards, locally and nationally, including the Jewish Family Service Association of Cleveland, where he is a former Chair and Lifetime Board Member, the Jewish Federation of Cleveland, where he is a Trustee and former Vice-Chair, and the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs.

Nancy and Adam Levin Committed supporters of the Cleveland Jewish community, who have held leadership roles in many local Jewish organizations, Nancy and Adam Levin have supported The Agnon School/Mandel JDS since the late 1990s. Adam Levin served as President of the Board of Trustees from 2004 until 2007. Adam was also the Co-Chair of the school’s Capital Campaign that has raised more than $10,000,000 towards the renovation of the school.

Adam and Nancy have each been awarded the Gloria Abrams Volunteer of the Year award for their outstanding volunteer efforts on behalf of the school - Nancy in 2002 and Adam in 2009.

Following the funding of a $250,000 endowment from proceeds of the Vincent Federico Golf Outing, in memory of Vincent Federico, Adam continued the golf tradition at Mandel JDS with a 100 Holes of Golf Marathon annual outing in memory of his brother, z”l, to fund the Barry Levin Fund, which finances tuition assistance and special programs.

Adam and Nancy are the proud parents of three Agnon alumni: Rebecca, Zachary, and Rachel. Although their children graduated many years ago, Adam and Nancy remain actively involved in and provide ongoing support of the school.

Nancy chaired both the Agnon Art Show for two years and the Agnon Auction - our two largest annual fundraising events of the year.

HONORARY CHAIRS Bobby Goldberg Robert Goldberg, known to his Agnon/MJDS family as Bobby, is a Founder, Life Trustee, and Past President of The Agnon School. With his vision and guidance, and the active involvement of his co-founders, Agnon was established as a genuine community school, which reached out and taught the students of the broadest spectrum of families in the Jewish community. Fifty-one years later, MJDS has remained true to the vision of the school’s founders. In a letter written to Bobby, several years ago, from his co-founder and dear friend Peter Rzepka, Peter summarized Bobby’s dedication to the school perfectly. “When we embarked on founding The Agnon School, you gave it all your attention and you inspired us all...your unwavering conviction and dedication kept us intact like the magic glue that keep all the pieces together.”

Bobby continues to make an impact locally at Mandel JDS and has spent a lifetime working to advance Jewish life in America, Israel, Russia, and worldwide. Bobby’s love for and commitment to the Jewish community was realized when, at the age of 31, he visited Israel, just after the Six Day War. “I realized that Israel was important to me and that if we don’t play a role in supporting it, it could all be gone.” In 1995, he helped forge a sister-city relationship between Cleveland and Beit She’an. The list of Board memberships Bobby has held is too long to mention. Suffice to say, Bobby is a cherished pillar of the Cleveland and international Jewish community.

Aliki & Peter Rzepka

Immigrants from post WWII Europe, Aliki and Peter Rzepka have always prioritized “working to improve the lives of others. We can’t and don’t just live for ourselves. We are here to live for something larger than ourselves.” In 1969, Aliki and Peter were co-founders of The Agnon School and have been dedicated to its success for the past 51 years. The concept of the school began when Aliki, Peter, and a small group of educators and community members sought an alternative to Jewish education in Cleveland. Peter recalls that he “envisioned a school that would be Jewish, would love Israel and would teach Hebrew and Judaic studies, where children could become good citizens and good Jews, with the emphasis not on modes of religion but on knowledge and pluralist Jewish education.”
