A benefit for memory care programs and services on our campuses and in the community.
Shining a spotlight on creativity.
The arts enrich all our lives and are an integral part of our culture and heritage. It’s why we support arts organizations within our community. They inspire, entertain, move, and inform us in so many ways. Without the arts our community would not be the vibrant and diverse place we enjoy today. KeyBank thanks Menorah Park & Montefiore for making a difference.

EVENT SPONSOR
Welcome to Shining Star CLE 2020! Good Evening Friends, Welcome to the fourth annual Shining Star CLE Finals Performance & Competition, a Northeast Ohio high school solo-singing competition! Needless to say, it is the first virtual production of its kind. It’s great to “see” so many of you from across the world joining us tonight. On behalf of Menorah Park’s leadership, we thank you for supporting this event and our ongoing efforts to deliver excellent care, particularly to our memory care clients and residents. We’ve answered this in years’ past, but with so many new faces “joining” us, we might as well provide an answer upfront to this very important and wise question so many of you are wondering about. Why is Menorah Park, a senior healthcare organization, hosting a high school singing competition? It’s simple, music is so important to the programming we have for our residents, especially those dealing with memory loss. Music has been proven time and again to be the last remaining memory that those living with dementia hold onto, easing the burden of memory loss and improving quality of life. Plus, central to our mission since 1906 is the belief in innovation, and what’s more innovative than combining high school students’ brilliant voices with raising money to help our senior population - all while entertaining you! Dementia care and needs are at an all-time high and are growing annually. Astonishingly, according to the Alzheimer’s Association, between 2000 and 2018 while deaths from heart disease have decreased by 7.8%, deaths from Alzheimer’s have increased 146%. In addition, by 2050, the number of people age 65 and older with dementia will grow to 13.8 million (up from 5.8 million today)! With such unbearable facts and figures before us, we realized we needed to take action, so Shining Star CLE’s goal is to raise those necessary funds and serve as a benefit for memory care programs offered by Menorah Park across our campuses and in the community, including Home Smart Memory Care and the Menorah Park Center 4 Brain Health®. Music, memories & innovation! Thank you for your support and participation in Shining Star CLE 2020 and Menorah Park!

Thank You from the Co-Chairs Dear Supporters of Memory Care and Music Aficionados,
Thank you for “joining” us for Shining Star CLE 2020! Who could have guessed last year while we were packed into the Mimi Ohio Theatre at Playhouse Square in downtown Cleveland that our world would be where it is today and our fourth annual event would be virtual? But we can’t be stopped from putting on an amazing event for such a worthwhile cause! Here is how the competition works: from April - July 1, 2020, we received online submissions from talented high students across Northeast Ohio, representing 63 schools in seven counties. The students underwent three elimination rounds, including professional coaching by our amazing Artistic Director, to get us to the Top Ten Finalists who will perform for all of us “live” tonight! Our judging panel composed of widely acclaimed performers and music industry experts have the tough decision of selecting the top four finalists. After they sing for us a second time tonight, you, along with our judges, will decide the order of the winners. These incredibly talented finalists will compete for $18,500 in college scholarships, plus $2,500 will be awarded to the first place winner’s high school music program. While the students gain incredible guidance and nurturing, as well as significant college scholarships, Shining Star CLE is here to benefit the community at large. The proceeds from this event support the memory care programs and services on our Montefiore, Menorah Park and Weils’ campuses and in the community. Our goal is to have our incredible dementia team continue to provide person-centered care to meet the needs of each and every individual we serve. With the growing needs in our community for dementia care, we can ONLY deliver that excellent service with your continued support. Thank you to the brilliant students that auditioned, their parents for giving us their trust, Event Sponsor KeyBank, Double Diamond Sponsor Glenmede, WKYC & Monica Robins, Cleveland Jewish News, Artistic Director Connor O’Brien along with his incredible team, our panel of top-notch judges, Jim Brickman, Rashad V. Chambers, Telly Leung, Trisha O’Brien, Carl Topilow and Gina Vernaci and our whole Menorah Park & Montefiore team. But most of all, thanks to YOU- tonight’s audience, sponsors, donors and supporters!
So on September 13 at 7 p.m. grab your favorite beverage and popcorn, sit back on your couch, live stream with us and enjoy the Shining Star CLE 2020 Virtual Finals Performance & Competition!

About the Cause “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything.” Plato Each of our lives has its own playlist. These are the songs that we grew up with, fell in love to, that comforted us when we were sad, connected us to our spirituality, and helped us celebrate each other. Forever the experience of hearing these songs will evoke those personal memories from our lives. In fact, our brains are hardwired to connect music with long-term memories and the wonderful array of emotions that accompany them! Music is the universal language. It conveys powerful feelings and emotions that “barge” into your soul with no boundaries or limitations.
Bridging music, memories and those with dementia. While Alzheimer’s disease damages the ability to recall facts and details, the ability to recognize and remember our favorite music endures. In fact, personally meaningful music acts like a “cue” to help those with Alzheimer’s remember the people, events, and emotions from their past. Menorah Park’s and Montefiore’s innovative memory care programs and services showcase a variety of music programs and events that help reawaken these precious memories in individuals with dementia on our campuses and in homes throughout the community.
“
Music is so much more than a pleasant experience for persons living with dementia. It is a key that unlocks memories of the past. It is a tremendous force of clarity and familiarity against a disease that is relentlessly disorienting. Through my own doctoral research and in working closely with clients on our campus, I’ve seen firsthand how personalized music can reduce anxiety and agitation, improve mood, and revitalize persons living with dementia. Dr. Evan Shelton, director, Menorah Park Center 4 Brain Health®

About the Audition Process ê Round 1: Video Auditions
April 1-July 1, 2020 High school students from Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage and Summit counties were able to upload their video auditions to shiningstarcle.org, singing the song of their choosing. They were given a three minute max and the choice to perform with piano accompaniment, personal instrument usage or a capella.
Judges then selected the Top 10 students to be recorded live in a professional video studio on August 9, for inclusion in the Shining Star CLE 2020 Virtual Finals Performance & Competition broadcast.
êRound 4: The Virtual Finals
A group of local music professionals reviewed and judged the online submissions and selected the students who advanced to the next round.
ê Round 2: “In-Person” Zoom Auditions
July 13 & 14, 2020 Approximately 80 students representing 63 schools across Northeast Ohio were invited to individual “Zoom” auditions and performed their song and were judged by a team of local music professionals.
ê Round 3: Zoom Semifinals
July 26, 2020 The 25 students who were selected to advance to the semifinals were divided into two groups and spent a half day in a virtual workshop with the artistic director, judges and the other contestants working on their songs from their own homes.
Performance & Competition
September 13, 2020 The Top 10 Finalists will perform virtually during a live-streamed broadcast, open to the public! A multi-piece band will accompany the students during their recorded solo performances. They will also perform in a portrait grid group number (“Brady Bunch” style). Contestants will be judged by independent, accomplished, music professionals from all over the country who are qualified in a wide variety of musical genres including, but not limited to, pop, R&B, classical, jazz and musical theatre. The top four students selected by the judges will perform a portion of their song once again. Audience members, in combination with the judges, will select the order of the winners electronically.

Host and Artistic Director MONICA ROBINS
CONNOR BOGART O’BRIEN
Menorah Park is thrilled to have WKYC as our broadcast media partner and Monica Robins, an Emmy-award-winning reporter, well known as one of Northeast Ohio’s most reliable sources for all health news, as host for the fourth year of tonight’s Shining Star CLE Virtual Finals Performance & Competition!
A native of Ashtabula, Connor grew up as a classical violinist before ultimately studying vocal performance/opera at the Eastman School of Music in New York. During his time at Eastman, he was accepted into the nationally ranked male acappella group, The University of Rochester Yellowjackets, (as seen on NBC’s The Sing Off ) as a featured soloist.
As Senior Health Correspondent, she has earned the respect of the region’s medical establishments, including The Academy of Medicine of Cleveland and Northern Ohio for fair, accurate and unbiased reporting.
Connor has been a soloist with the National Repertory Orchestra, New Haven Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Cleveland Pops Orchestra, Charlotte Symphony Orchestra and the Cleveland Orchestra. As a songwriter, several of his original songs have been featured on national television including ABC’s Days of Our Lives and MTV’s The Hills.
Monica has the ability to take even the most complicated medical procedure and make it understandable to viewers. Her stories are often broadcast nationally at other NBC and TEGNA stations and her more than 25 Cleveland Clinic “Medical Miracle” specials have also aired internationally. With more than 30 years of broadcast journalism experience, Monica has won seven Emmy awards and numerous first place Excellence in Journalism awards from the Ohio Press Club and The Associated Press. She has also been inducted into the Ohio Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Monica is the lead singer for two rock bands, including Monica Robins and the Whiskey Kings and the Ninja Cowboys.
Inside Out, the lead single from his first album, vaulted to the number one radio position in France. Two full-length albums followed, which led to performing as the opening act on more than 20 national tours including Jim Brickman, Huey Lewis and the News, Rick Springfield, Hall & Oates and Mariah Carey. Connor can be heard singing and recording jingles for companies such as Hasbro Toys and American Greetings, as well as in more than 32 countries worldwide as a headlining act on Princess, Holland America, Celebrity and Royal Caribbean cruise lines.

A Note from the Artistic Director
This seems to be a year of firsts. The first time in many of our lifetimes where everything seems to have changed. The first time that I haven’t been onstage in months, and the first time so many performers, young and old have not been able to express their craft and passion for what they do. It is also a first for my introduction as Artistic Director of Shining Star CLE, and what a year to start a new job in the arts! But in taking over this position, and joining so much of the team here on the show, as well as at Montefiore/Menorah Park, I quickly realized that one of these firsts was a gift. This is the very first virtual performance of Shining Star CLE, and what a show it is! In preparing every piece of this presentation, I have come to realize how proud I am to be a part of this first. This determined, and solemn decision that nothing will stop these young voices from being heard. That no matter the difficulties, their spirit would not be silenced, and no matter the obstacles, our dedication to funding memory care for those who need it most will not stop. Indeed, “the show must go on.” And so, after months of video submissions, virtual auditions live over the internet, coaching our incredible semifinalists in kitchens and living rooms, and watching these remarkable students navigate through hurdle after hurdle, we welcome you to the show. Ten astonishing performers, ready to show you exactly what it means to be a first. And for that, I am so thankful to be a part of it.
Enjoy the show!
