The arts enrich all our lives and are an integral part of our culture and heritage. It’s why we support arts organizations within our community. EVENT SPONSOR
Welcome to Shining Star CLE 2021! Good Evening Menorah Park Friends and Family, Welcome to the fifth Shining Star CLE Finals Performance & Competition, a unique Northeast Ohio high school solo-singing competition! It’s great to once again “see” so many of you from across the globe joining us tonight, in what is our second virtual Finals. On behalf of Menorah Park’s leadership, staff and those we serve, we thank you for supporting this important, yet fun event and our ongoing efforts to deliver excellent care, particularly to our memory care clients and residents. Music is the last remaining memory for those living with dementia. Central to our mission since 1906 is the importance of innovation, Shining Star CLE is no exception, combining high school students’ brilliant voices – vying for college scholarships, with raising money to help our senior population – all while entertaining you! One in three seniors dies with dementia … killing more than breast cancer and prostate cancer COMBINED! Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia have been on the rise in recent years, BUT to our shock and dismay, those related deaths have increased a staggering 16% during the COVID-19 pandemic. This was not something we could have rationally predicted only one year ago, and yet here we are, facing such a sad reality. This is why we NEED your help and support NOW MORE THAN EVER! Shining Star CLE and its fundraising efforts MUST grow! These funds are irreplaceable and necessary to benefit the memory care services and programs on our campuses and in homes throughout the Northeast Ohio community. Knowing these facts and figures about the challenging future of seniors with dementia, we see the statistics only getting worse, making our drive to help our residents and clients that much stronger! Please join us in improving the quality AND quantity of life for those we love! Music, memories & innovation! Thank you for your contribution to Shining Star CLE 2021 and Menorah Park!

Thank You from the Co-Chairs Dear Shining Star CLE guests from around the world,
Thank you for joining us virtually once again for Shining Star CLE 2021! Although it would be nice to celebrate together, there’s something rather comforting and comfortable about watching from anywhere where the sky is the limit as to how many can join us. Can you believe we had more than 10,000 unique devices logged on to the show in 2020 from all over the globe? We hope we surpass that number this year! A little background on how the competition culminated in tonight’s Finals Performance & Competition: we opened online video submissions to high school students from ten counties (up from eight last year) across Northeast Ohio from April to June 13, 2021, and received auditions from students representing more than 60 schools. The students underwent three virtual audition rounds, narrowing down to 25 semifinalists and after extensive coaching by Connor O’Brien and his team of judges, we now have the Top Ten Finalists who will perform for all of us tonight! Our Finals judging panel is composed of widely acclaimed performers and music industry experts who have the tough decision of selecting the top four finalists. After those final four sing for us a second time tonight, you, along with our judges, will decide the order of the winners. These incredibly talented finalists will compete for $18,500 in college scholarships, plus $2,500 will be awarded to the first place winner’s high school music program. Not only does Shining Star CLE change the lives of these talented students, it benefits the community at large. It brings together people from across Northeast Ohio, it gives much needed awareness to the Excellence in Caring of Menorah Park and proceeds from this event support the memory care services and programs on our campuses and in homes throughout the community. Thank you to our Event Sponsor, KeyBank, our Double Diamond Sponsors, Glenmede and Home Instead Senior Care, all of the amazing students that auditioned, their parents, schools and support systems for entrusting us, WKYC and Monica Robins, the Cleveland Jewish News, our panel of six renowned judges all back together again, Jim Brickman, Rashad V. About the Cause Someone once asked: “Why do you love music so much?” I replied: “Because it is the only thing that stays when everything and everyone is gone!” - Unknown HOW SHINING STAR CLE WILL TOUCH THOSE WE CARE FOR We all know from hearing that special song associated with a first love or the first dance at a wedding that music is profoundly linked to personal memories. In fact, our brains are hard-wired to connect music with long-term memory. Music has been found to stimulate parts of the brain, and studies have indicated that music enhances the memory. Music is the universal language of emotion in that it can represent different feelings and seep into your soul with no boundaries or limitations.
Bridging music, memories with those with dementia While Alzheimer’s damages the ability to recall facts and details, it does not destroy these lasting connections between a favorite song or melody and the memory associated with it, no matter how long ago. Menorah Park’s innovative memory care services and programs showcase a variety of music programs and events that help reawaken these precious memories in individuals with dementia on our two campuses and in homes throughout the community.

About the Audition Process ê Round 1: Video Auditions
April 1 to June 13, 2021 High school students from Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage, Stark, Summit and Wayne counties were able to upload their video auditions to shiningstarcle.org, singing the song of their choosing. They were given a three-minute max and the choice to perform with piano accompaniment, personal instrument usage or a capella.
Judges then selected the Top 10 Finalists to be recorded live in a professional video studio on July 25, 2021, for inclusion in the Shining Star CLE 2021 Virtual Finals Performance & Competition broadcast.
êRound 4: The Virtual Finals
A group of local music professionals reviewed and judged the online submissions and selected the students who advanced to the next round.
ê Round 2: “In-Person” Zoom Auditions
June 28 and 29, 2021 Approximately 80 students representing 62 schools across Northeast Ohio were invited to individual “Zoom” auditions and performed their song and were judged by a team of local music professionals.
ê Round 3: Zoom Semifinals
July 11, 2021 The 25 students who were selected to advance to the semifinals were divided into two groups and spent a half day in a virtual workshop with judges and the other contestants working on their songs from their own homes.
Performance & Competition August 29, 2021 The Top 10 Finalists will perform virtually during a live-streamed broadcast, open to the public! A multi-piece band will accompany the students during their recorded solo performances. They will also perform in a professionally recorded number.
Contestants will be judged by independent, accomplished, music professionals from all over the country who are qualified in a wide variety of musical genres including, but not limited to, pop, R&B, classical, jazz and musical theatre. Inside Out, the lead single from his first album, vaulted to the number one radio position in France. Two full-length albums followed, which led to performing as the opening act on more than 20 national tours including Jim Brickman, Huey Lewis and the News, Rick Springfield, Hall & Oates and Mariah Carey. Connor can be heard singing and recording jingles for companies such as Hasbro Toys and American Greetings, as well as in more than 32 countries worldwide as a headlining act on Princess, Holland America, Celebrity and Royal Caribbean cruise lines.

A Note from the Artistic Director
A favorite quote of mine is from Dr. Leo Buscaglia, who said that “change is the end result of all true learning”. Well, we have certainly had our fair share of both, these past two seasons of Shining Star CLE. “Change,” when unexpectedly reformatting the entire show for a virtual performance last year, and “learning” how to continue the phenomenal success it was, one more time for 2021. And, against all odds, it was an incredible success. The entire Shining Star CLE team and staff from Menorah Park, sprang into action to create, for the first time ever, a fully virtual program. We knew that the crucial funds that this program raises were necessary now more than ever, and just as importantly, that the young artists of Northeast Ohio needed an outlet to tell their stories. So many of our young performers chose pieces this season that speak of loneliness, of isolation, but more importantly, of hope. Our incredible students have once again risen to the challenge. From living rooms, to iPhones, they auditioned, rehearsed, were coached and even recorded the music they know and love, with safety in mind, and the songs that define them. And once again, the incredible talent of our community has shone through. The format didn’t matter, neither did the location, because these stars were ready to sing, and sing they did. So, sit back and enjoy what they have created for you, and get ready to choose your favorite with your vote, because the “end result” of this change is simply amazing.
Connor Bogart O’Brien Artistic Director, Shining Star CLE 2021

I am deeply impressed with these young artists who share their talents through Shining Star CLE. While we enjoy the opportunity to experience the vocal gifts of contestants each of the five years of SSCLE, we also appreciate that they lend their voices to a very important cause; memory care services that support individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia. They set examples for the ways in which all of us can work toward making the world a better place by inspiring, motivating and educating others by using their unique gifts in creative expression. Congratulations and thank you! You are all truly inspiring! Jim Newbrough
