Music and memory share a very strong connection. Shining Star CLE is a unique singing competition showcasing Northeast Ohio’s talented youth while supporting an array of memory care services and programs.
PRESENTED BY MENORAH PARK FOUNDATIONyour work and dedication inspire us.
At KeyBank, we believe achievements that have a positive impact on people and the community should always be recognized. Making a difference is never easy, and we never stop being thankful for the people who do it.
That's why we are proud to support Menorah Park Foundation and Shining Star CLE 2023.
Welcome to Shining Star CLE 2023!
Good Evening Menorah Park Foundation Friends and Family,
Welcome to the seventh Shining Star CLE Finals Performance, an inspiring Northeast Ohio high school solo-singing competition for a great cause! It is wonderful to have so many friends and supporters joining us tonight.
On behalf of the seniors we serve in the community, we thank you for joining us for this fun, yet important event that champions our ongoing efforts to deliver excellent care, particularly for our community members in need of memory care.
Music is often the last remaining memory for persons with dementia, and these talented young adults are raising voices toward awareness and support of music for memory through Shining Star CLE. We are both grateful and overjoyed to also shine a spotlight on these brilliant voices – vying for college scholarships, while helping the growing population of persons with dementia – all while entertaining you!
While we currently don’t have a cure for dementia, there are a variety of opportunities to support individuals and engage the memory. Music, in particular, allows persons with dementia to reconnect with the world through music-triggered memories stored deep within the brain. While dementia damages the ability to recall facts and details, it does not destroy these lasting connections between a favorite song or melody and the memory associated with it. As the number of older Americans continues to increase, so too will the number of new and existing cases of dementia. Absent of the development of medical breakthroughs, experts predict the number of people age 65 or older with the disease may grow to a projected 12.7 million by 2050.
While we remain hopeful, here we are, facing such a sad reality. And it’s our mission to support as many seniors as possible by sustaining and enhancing their quality of life. This is why we need everyone’s help and support NOW MORE THAN EVER!
Thank you for helping us serve those we love through your contributions to Shining Star CLE 2023!

Good Evening Friends,
We are live and in person! Thank you for joining us for this very special evening, our seventh annual Shining Star CLE. Our sincere gratitude to you, our Donors, our Supporters, our Friends, as well as, our talented Finalists, our amazing Staff and everyone who has worked so hard to make this evening a success.
Tonight’s finalists were part of the 128 teens from 71 high schools spanning 10 Northeast Ohio counties who submitted their online videos earlier this year. With the professional help of Connor O’Brien and our judges, 9 finalists and 2 alternates were chosen to perform for you tonight. We welcome our tenth finalist, Khoury Ward, who wasn’t able to perform last year due to illness.
Tonight, our judges will select the “Final Four” and then YOU will choose our winners. A total of $18,500 will be awarded in scholarships and $2,500 will be donated to the winner’s high school music program.
Shining Star CLE changes the lives of our students while it benefits our senior community. Music and the arts enhance our programs for memory care services for the elderly. Truly a win-win for all.
Our thanks to the Event Sponsor, Key Bank and WKYC and Monica Robins, our emcee for the evening. Special thanks to our esteemed judges, Mary Bridget Davies, Michael McElroy, Ben Fankhauser, Carl Topilow and Gina Vernaci along with our incredible Artistic Director, Connor O’Brien.
Special thanks also to our Menorah Park Foundation team of Joshua Berger, Deylie Elkins, Jane Furth, Lynn Krumholz, and Katie Martin for their dedication to this event.
We know you will be amazed by our “Shining Stars” this evening. Sit back and enjoy this most unique and entertaining performance!
With gratitude and respect for the work you do each day.
Congratulations to Menorah Park and the Shining Star CLE finalists.

About the Cause
Imagine back to when you first heard a song or a tune that made you feel good. This particular song has probably stayed with you throughout your life. Now when you hear it, you’re transported back in time.
That’s the effect Shining Star CLE, a solo-singing competition for Northeast Ohio high school students, will have on its contestants – creating an everlasting memory. Additionally, our residents enjoy having an opportunity to watch a few of the participants performing live on our campus.
On Sunday, September 10, 2023, we celebrate the outstanding vocal talents of our area high school students while we raise necessary funds to provide an array of memory care services and programs. This promises to be an exceptional night of musical entertainment and a unique opportunity to support our talented youth, as well as our cherished elders.
Music, memories and those with dementia
Research has proven that music allows individuals with dementia to reconnect with the world through music-triggered memories stored deep within the brain. While dementia-related diseases affect the ability to recall facts and details, it does not destroy these lasting connections between a favorite song or melody and the memory associated with it, no matter how long ago.
Innovative memory care programs and services showcase a variety of music programs and events that help reawaken these precious memories in individuals with dementia.
Congratulations to all the 2023 Shining Stars! Making memories with music is important for all of us!

About the Audition Process
Round 1: Video Auditions
April 1-June 30, 2023
High School students from Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage, Stark, Summit and Wayne counties were able to upload their video auditions to shiningstarcle.org, singing the song of their choice. Students were given a three minute max and the choice to perform with piano accompaniment, personal instrument usage or a capella.
A group of local music professionals reviewed and judged the online submissions and selected the top students who advanced to the next round.
Round 2: Zoom Auditions
July 8-9, 2023
Nearly 80 students representing 71 schools across Northeast Ohio were invited to individual Zoom auditions and performed their song while being judged by a team of local music professionals.
Round 3: Semifinals
July 30, 2023
The 25 students selected to advance to the Semifinals spent the day at Menorah Park working with judges and with the other contestants on their songs. Judges selected the Top 10 Finalists and two alternates to perform in The Finals Performance.
Round 4: The Finals Performance
September 10, 2023
The Top 10 Finalists will perform at Playhouse Square! A multi-piece band will accompany the students in group performances, as well as their solo performances.
Contestants will be judged by independent, accomplished, music professionals from all over the country who are qualified in a wide variety of musical genres including, but not limited to, pop, R&B, classical, jazz and musical theatre.
Then, the top four selected by the judges will be asked to perform a final time. Audience members, in combination with the judges, will select the order of the winners.
Host and Artistic Director
MONICA ROBINS
CONNOR BOGART O’BRIEN
Menorah Park is thrilled to have WKYC as our broadcast media partner and Monica Robins, an Emmy award-winning reporter, well known as one of Northeast Ohio’s most reliable sources for all health news, as host for the seventh year of tonight’s Shining Star CLE The Finals Performance!
As Senior Health Correspondent, she has earned the respect of the region’s medical establishments, including The Academy of Medicine of Cleveland and Northern Ohio for fair, accurate and unbiased reporting.
Monica has the ability to take even the most complicated medical procedure and make it understandable to viewers. Her stories are often broadcast nationally at other NBC and TEGNA stations and many of her stories have aired internationally.
With nearly 40 years of broadcast journalism experience, Monica has won seven Emmy awards and numerous first place Excellence in Journalism awards from the Ohio Press Club and The Associated Press. She has also been inducted into the Ohio Broadcasters Hall of Fame.
Monica is the lead singer for two rock bands, including Monica Robins and the Whiskey Kings and the Ninja Cowboys.
Menorah Park is proud to have Connor Bogart O’Brien back as artistic director for his fourth year! A native of Ashtabula, Connor grew up as a classical violinist before ultimately studying vocal performance/ opera at the Eastman School of Music in New York. During his time at Eastman, he was accepted into the nationally ranked male acappella group, The University of Rochester Yellowjackets, (as seen on NBC’s The Sing Off) as a featured soloist. Connor has been a soloist with the Cleveland Pops Orchestra, National Repertory Orchestra, New Haven Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Charlotte Symphony Orchestra and the Cleveland Orchestra. As a songwriter, several of his original songs have been featured on national television including ABC’s Days of Our Lives and MTV’s The Hills. Inside Out, the lead single from his first album, vaulted to the number one radio position in France. Two full-length albums followed, which led to performing as the opening act on more than 20 national tours including Jim Brickman, Huey Lewis and the News, Rick Springfield, Hall & Oates and Mariah Carey. Connor can be heard singing and recording jingles for companies such as Hasbro Toys and American Greetings, as well as in more than 32 countries worldwide as a headlining act on Princess, Holland America, Celebrity and Royal Caribbean cruise lines.
Commitment. A word of which every discipline understands inside and out. An undeniable ingredient for success, and something our Top Ten Finalists are learning to live and breathe.
Welcome back to Shining Star CLE 2023. If there is one word I want you to remember when watching the young performers tonight, it is that very expression. Commitment to their craft, to their training, and to the very cause which brings us all here tonight, commitment to helping those in need.
The Finalists you are about to hear tonight are the best of the best. Most have been performing since kindergarten, and already boast resumes that rival some professionals. They understand commitment to their craft, to their training, and to the productions, bands, and shows that they have been performing in all their lives. But that commitment now extends beyond themselves. To their community, to their elders, and to those who can benefit the most. Their talents are now being used for a greater good, and that commitment is such an incredible part of their journey as artists.
It gives me such pleasure to watch them grow and understand the gifts they have been given, and that these stories they tell through song are universal and timeless. They have been passed from those who came before to repackage and teach to a new generation. The songs may have changed, but the feelings of love, excitement, pain and fear are all the same. No matter the tempo, no matter the age.
So I invite you to share in these stories tonight, and to share in the Finalists’ newfound commitment to the cause we support each year. Watch as they use their talents to take care of the storytellers who came before, as they will become one day.

Khoury would like to thank his choir teacher Mr. Landry and his theatre director Mr. Greene. Khoury is grateful for his mother, a Pastor, who allowed him to grow up surrounded by soulful church music. In high school, he started singing choral music, which lead him to develop a voice which is a mix of emotion and soul with technical precision. He believes these origins make his voice unique, helping him to stand out from others. Khoury participated in the rehearsals for The Finals of Shining Star CLE 2022. He feels the opportunity helped him to grow and improve as a performer, however, after contracting COVID-19, he could not perform at the show. I Can’t Stand Still | Footloose/Snow and Pitchford
Danielle Schuster is a 15-year-old Homeschooled Sophomore from Jackson Township, Ohio. She has performed in multiple plays and musicals over the years, and is a proud member of the Spotlight Society competition team for both 2023 and 2024. The team travels the country to perform in musical theatre competitions, and has won numerous awards. She recently participated in the Ohio Cinderella Pageants, where she won both “Cameo Girl” and “Talent of the Year” awards. Danielle has had a love of singing since she was four years old. She is a song writer and in 2020 she released her first song (at the age of 12) and she is currently working on an album. She would like to thank her vocal coach, Joy Ellis, for her support and encouragement, as well as her parents for their love and continued support.
Jeremiah Triplett has been a “rockin’ robin” since birth. His love of performing was fostered by imitating Michael Jackson and singing in his church. Jeremiah strives to keep a childlike sense of wonder about him, something his musical family heartily instills in him. Jeremiah is also fortunate to have supportive friends, especially the ones who introduced him to Shining Star CLE! Jeremiah loves theater, having leading roles in the Wizard of Oz, Dracula, and Footloose, where his song “I Can’t Stand Still” originates. And while Jeremiah is absolutely flabbergasted to have made it so far in Shining Star CLE, he is extremely grateful.
The Meisel and Pesses Families congratulate all the Shining Star CLE contestants!
We are grateful for the amazing and compassionate care that Menorah Park provides to our community!
