Celebrating Jewish Cleveland amid challenging times

s our hearts are heavy with concern for those in Israel enduring the devastating effects of the ongoing war – and as concerns about antisemitism continue to grow near and far – it’s more important than ever for our community to be unified. The war in Israel has undoubtedly cast a shadow over us, reminding us of the fragility of peace and the importance of standing together despite our differences. In times like these, it becomes even more crucial for us to support one another and those affected by the tragic war in our Holy Land. And although we face such challenges, I continue to be inspired by Jewish Cleveland. Here, we are proud to be part of a generous community where those from diverse Jewish traditions, generations, hometowns and ethnic backgrounds consistently help ensure everyone is taken care of – especially during hard times. This commitment is evidenced on the cover of SOURCE 2024, which shows a large crowd from Jewish Cleveland at the “March for Israel” rally on Nov. 14 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The rally attracted 290,000 supporters of Israel, which included approximately 1,800 Clevelanders – largely made possible by our Jewish Federation of Cleveland, which provided bus rides and meals at no cost to those traveling to D.C. for the event. Our community also came together to raise a record-setting $36,355,013 in the Federation’s 2024 Campaign for Jewish Needs; the funds go toward vital community needs locally, nationally and internationally. As of late December, the Federation also has raised $33,349,261 for its ongoing Israel Emergency Campaign – donations go to victims of terrorism and their families in Israel. You can donate at jewishcleveland.org. This kind of life-changing fundraising is possible thanks to all of us doing our part to help repair the world, or tikkun olam. On the theme of giving back, we were thrilled to celebrate this year’s class of Cleveland Jewish News 18 Difference Makers – a group of amazing individuals making a significant impact and shining a bright light on our city and beyond. We also honored the awe-inspiring leadership and tikkun olam performed by Michael Siegal, our 2023 Sam Miller Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. And we celebrated this year’s Generation Award recipients, the Wuliger family, consisting of Tim, Sandy, Elissa, Jason and Allison. Their passion for l’dor v’dor – from generation to generation – is evident in the impact they each have in our community. You can read about the Difference Makers at cjn.org/18dm. We also honored our 2023 class of CJN 12 Under 36: Members of the Tribe. These awards are a tribute to exceptional Jewish young professionals who are making significant contributions across

The Cleveland Jewish Publication Company is one of the few completely independent, community-owned multimedia companies. Since its inception in 1964, it has been committed to the progress and continuity of Jewish life in Northeast Ohio through its publication of a weekly newspaper. It will celebrate its 60th anniversary on Oct. 30, 2024. The CJPC publishes a variety of magazines, custom publications for businesses and organizations, and hosts multiple digital properties. It also produces numerous events related to its products aimed at engaging and bringing together the communities it serves. In 2018, the CJPC entered into an agreement with the former owner of Ohio Jewish Chronicle, which included ceasing that publication, and creating a new Columbus Jewish News to better serve the Central Ohio Jewish community. In late 2021, the CJPC entered into an agreement with the Jewish Community Board of Akron, now JewishAkron, to begin publishing a new, updated Akron Jewish News to serve the readers of that community, which began in February 2022. JEWISH HOLIDAYS and noteworthy dates TU B’SHEVAT

Wednesday, Jan. 24 (begins at sunset) Thursday, Jan. 25 (ends at nightfall) Tu b’Shevat, the 15th of Shevat on the Jewish calendar, is the day that marks the beginning of a “new year” for trees. This is the season in which the earliest-blooming trees in the Land of Israel emerge from their winter sleep and begin a new fruit-bearing cycle. We mark the day of Tu b’Shevat by eating fruit, particularly the kinds singled out by the Torah in its praise of the bounty of the Holy Land: grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives and dates. On this day, we remember that “man is a tree of the field” (Deuteronomy 20:19) and reflect on the lessons we can derive from our botanical analogue.

Saturday, March 23 (begins at sunset) Sunday, March 24 (ends at nightfall) The jolly festival of Purim is celebrated every year on the 14th of the Hebrew month of Adar (late winter/early spring). It commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia from Haman’s plot “to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews, young and old, infants and women, in a single day,” as recorded in the Megillah (book of Esther).

Monday, April 22 (begins at sunset) Tuesday, April 30 (ends at nightfall) The eight-day festival of Passover is celebrated in the early spring, from the 15th through the 22nd of the Hebrew month of Nissan. It commemorates the emancipation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. By following the rituals of Passover, we have the ability to relive and experience the true freedom that our ancestors gained.

ROSH HASHANAH

Wednesday, Oct. 2 (begins at sunset) Friday, Oct. 4 (ends at nightfall) Rosh Hashanah is the birthday of the universe, the day G-d created Adam and Eve, and it’s celebrated as the head of the Jewish year. It s celebrated with candlelighting in the evenings, festive meals with sweet delicacies during the night and day, prayer services that include the sounding of the ram’s horn (shofar) on both mornings and desisting from creative work.

YOM KIPPUR

Friday, Oct. 11 (begins at sunset) Saturday, Oct. 12 (ends at nightfall) Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the year – the day on which we are closest to God and to the quintessence of our own souls. It is the Day of Atonement – “For on this day He will forgive you, to purify you, that you be cleansed from all your sins before God” (Leviticus 16:30). For nearly 26 hours – from several minutes before sunset on 9 ishrei to after nightfall on 10 ishrei we “afflict our souls,” or abstain from food and drink, do not wash or anoint our bodies, do not wear leather footwear and abstain from marital relations.

SUKKOT

Wednesday, Oct. 16 (begins at sunset) Wednesday, Oct. 23 (ends at nightfall) For 40 years, as our ancestors traversed the Sinai Desert, following the Exodus from Egypt, miraculous “clouds of glory” surrounded and hovered over them, shielding them from the dangers and discomforts of the desert. Ever since, we remember od s kindness and reaffirm our trust in His providence by dwelling in a sukkah a hut of temporary construction with a roof covering of branches for the duration of the ukkot festival (on the Jewish calendar Tishrei 15-21). For seven days and nights, we eat all our meals in the sukkah and otherwise regard it as our home.

SHEMINI ATZERET / SIMCHAT TORAH Wednesday, Oct. 23 (begins at sunset) Friday, Oct. 25 (ends at nightfall)

The holiday of Sukkot is followed by an independent holiday called Shemini Atzeret. In Israel, this is a one-day holiday; in the Diaspora, it is a two-day holiday, and the second day is known as Simchat Torah. This holiday is characterized by utterly unbridled joy, which surpasses even the joy of Sukkot. The joy reaches its climax on Simchat Torah, when we celebrate the conclusion – and restart – of the annual Torah-reading cycle.

On the first night, we light ust one flame. On the second night, an additional flame is lit.
