Celebrating a year of milestones
As we turn the page on the past year, we reflect on an extraordinary journey marked by milestones in our local and global Jewish communities. Some of these milestones came with joy and pride, while others brought profound challenges and heartbreak.
It is a sobering reality that the Israel-Hamas war and hostage crisis persist over a year later, casting a shadow on our collective consciousness. Alongside this, our communities worldwide have endured a surge in public antisemitic sentiments and incidents. Yet, in these trying times, the resilience and generosity of our Jewish community have shone brightly. Whether in Cleveland, Columbus, Akron or beyond, we’ve stood together as a compassionate and interconnected people, demonstrating the strength of unity even in adversity.
This year, we also had cause for celebration. The Cleveland Jewish News reached a historic milestone: 60 years of publishing as an independent, communityowned weekly Jewish newspaper. What began on Oct. 30, 1964, has grown into a thriving multimedia enterprise, encompassing three newspapers, multiple magazine titles (including this very issue of SOURCE), robust digital platforms, newsletters, events, custom publishing, city magazines, podcasts and even a consulting division.
To commemorate our diamond anniversary, the Cleveland Jewish News Foundation hosted a gala at Landerhaven in Mayfield Heights, on Oct. 30, where 500 guests reflected on our rich history and looked forward to an exciting future. This celebration was not only about the CJN but about what we, as a collective community, have built together.
Another remarkable milestone came from the Jewish Federation of Cleveland, which set a new fundraising record of $38,087,175 in its 2025 Campaign for Jewish Needs. This incredible achievement fuels vital initiatives locally, nationally and internationally, ensuring Jewish Cleveland remains
a beacon of support and strength.
Within these pages of SOURCE, we highlight the institutions and organizations that bind our community together. From nonprofits to local businesses, these entities are the backbone of Jewish Cleveland, ready to assist in times of need and provide opportunities to engage and give back. Whether you’re looking for support or seeking to make a difference, SOURCE is here to connect you with the resources and causes that matter.
As we look toward 2025, may we celebrate more joyous milestones together, and may our unity guide us through any challenges. With compassion, resilience and an unbreakable bond, we are, indeed, stronger together.
Here’s to a meaningful and impactful year ahead.

I would like to take this opportunity to formally introduce myself. Some of you may have met me here at the store or on the road when I was doing pick-ups and deliveries. For those whom I have not yet had the privilege to meet, my name is Jim Sword, and I am the new owner of Alberts since April 1, 2022. I have over 30 years of experience in the fur industry. I worked for Novotny Furs for over 16½ years, and I trained under Paul Marton, Master Furrier at both Halle’s and Higbees. I then started my own business, Sword Furs, 15 years ago. Prior to Richard Goldman’s unfortunate passing in February of 2022, he wrote the following letter to his beloved clients:
Dear Albert’s Valued Client,
I would like to inform you that after forty-two years of operating Albert Furs, I’ve decided to retire—a decision that I didn’t take lightly. My total focus since I began in the business in my twenties has been to provide the finest outerwear products and services, always making sure that our clients were well served. It was in this spirit that I carefully chose someone to continue to run Alberts. I believe I’ve found that person in Jim Sword, a furrier with the experience and integrity to continue to operate Albert Furs as I have, and my father and grandfather before me. He has more than 30 years of experience running a full-service fur business, and is the kind of hands-on operator that made our business so successful...It’s been a wonderful forty-two years, but I feel now’s the time to enjoy my family, catch up on my reading, travel—Covid permitting—and pursue my varied interests and hobbies. I will miss each and every one of you, because, in the end, what made my business so enjoyable was you the customer.
I feel honored, humbled, and blessed to have been given this incredible opportunity. I am very grateful for Jan, Mary Jo, Donna, and John in helping me through this transition. I am excited for the future. I will continue to provide the best service, impeccable workmanship, and a large variety of unique and quality garments for sale at both the Solon and Westlake locations. I hope all of you find this letter informative and comforting. Please don’t hesitate to call or email me if you have any questions or you would just like to speak with me.

It celebrated its 60th anniversary on Oct. 30, 2024.

JEWISH HOLIDAYS and noteworthy dates
TU B’SHEVAT
Wednesday, Feb. 12 (begins at sunset)
Thursday, Feb. 13 (ends at nightfall)
Tu b’Shevat, the 15th of Shevat on the Jewish calendar, is the day that marks the beginning of a “new year” for trees. This is the season in which the earliest-blooming trees in the Land of Israel emerge from their winter sleep and begin a new fruit-bearing cycle. We mark the day of Tu b’Shevat by eating fruit, particularly the kinds singled out by the Torah in its praise of the bounty of the Holy Land: grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives and dates. On this day, we remember that “man is a tree of the field” (Deuteronomy 20:19) and reflect on the lessons we can derive from our botanical analogue.
PURIM
Thursday, March 13 (begins at sunset)
Friday, March 14 (ends at nightfall)
The jolly festival of Purim is celebrated every year on the 14th of the Hebrew month of Adar (late winter/early spring). It commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia from Haman’s plot “to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews, young and old, infants and women, in a single day,” as recorded in the Megillah (book of Esther).
PASSOVER
Saturday, April 12 (begins at sunset)
Sunday, April 20 (ends at nightfall)
The eight-day festival of Passover is celebrated in the early spring, from the 15th through the 22nd of the Hebrew month of Nissan. It commemorates the emancipation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. By following the rituals of Passover, we have the ability to relive and experience the true freedom that our ancestors gained.
YOM HASHOAH
Wednesday, April 23 (begins at sunset)
Thursday, April 24 (ends at nightfall)
Holocaust Remembrance Day
YOM HAZIKARON
Tuesday, April 29 (begins at sunset)
Wednesday, April 30 (ends at nightfall) Israel Memorial Day
YOM HA’ATZMAUT
Wednesday, April 30 (begins at sunset)
Thursday, May 1 (ends at nightfall)
Israel Independence Day
SHAVUOT
Sunday, June 1 (begins at sunset)
Tuesday, June 3 (ends at nightfall)
Shavuot coincides with the date that God gave the Torah to the Jewish people at Mount Sinai more than 3,300 years ago. It comes after 49 days of eager counting, as we prepared ourselves for this special day. It is celebrated by lighting candles, staying up all night to learn Torah, hearing the reading of the Ten Commandments in synagogue, feasting on dairy foods and more.
TISHA B’AV
Saturday, Aug. 2 (begins at sunset) Sunday, Aug. 3 (ends at nightfall)
The Three Weeks is an annual mourning period that falls in the summer during which we do not cut our hair, purchase new clothes, listen to music or hold weddings. It reaches its climax and concludes with the fast of the ninth of Av, the date when both Holy Temples were set aflame. This is the saddest day of the Jewish calendar, and it is also the date that many other tragedies befell our people. The fast of Tisha b’Av begins at sunset the previous evening. Besides fasting, we abstain from additional pleasures: washing, applying lotions or creams, wearing leather shoes and marital relations. Until midday, we sit on the floor or on low stools.
ROSH HASHANAH
Monday, Sept. 22 (begins at sunset) Wednesday, Sept. 24 (ends at nightfall)
Rosh Hashanah is the birthday of the universe, the day G‑d created Adam and Eve, and it’s celebrated as the head of the Jewish year. It’s celebrated with candlelighting in the evenings, festive meals with sweet delicacies during the night and day, prayer services that include the sounding of the ram’s horn (shofar) on both mornings and desisting from creative work.
YOM KIPPUR
Wednesday, Oct. 1 (begins at sunset)
Thursday, Oct. 2 (ends at nightfall)
Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the year – the day on which we are closest to God and to the quintessence of our own souls. It is the Day of Atonement – “For on this day He will forgive you, to purify you, that you be cleansed from all your sins before God” (Leviticus 16:30). For nearly 26 hours – from several minutes before sunset on 9 Tishrei to after nightfall on 10 Tishrei – we “afflict our souls,” or abstain from food and drink, do not wash or anoint our bodies, do not wear leather footwear and abstain from marital relations.
SUKKOT
Monday, Oct. 6 (begins at sunset) Monday, Oct. 13 (ends at nightfall)
For 40 years, as our ancestors traversed the Sinai Desert, following the Exodus from Egypt, miraculous “clouds of glory” surrounded and hovered over them, shielding them from the dangers and discomforts of the desert. Ever since, we remember God’s kindness and reaffirm our trust in His providence by dwelling in a sukkah – a hut of temporary construction with a roof covering of branches – for the duration of the Sukkot festival (on the Jewish calendar Tishrei 15 21). For seven days and nights, we eat all our meals in the sukkah and otherwise regard it as our home.
SHEMINI ATZERET / SIMCHAT TORAH
Monday, Oct. 13 (begins at sunset)
Wednesday, Oct. 15 (ends at nightfall)
The holiday of Sukkot is followed by an independent holiday called Shemini Atzeret. In Israel, this is a one day holiday; in the Diaspora, it is a two day holiday, and the second day is known as Simchat Torah. This holiday is characterized by utterly unbridled joy, which surpasses even the joy of Sukkot. The joy reaches its climax on Simchat Torah, when we celebrate the conclusion – and restart – of the annual Torah reading cycle.
CHANUKAH
Sunday, Dec. 14 (begins at sunset)
Monday, Dec. 22 (ends at nightfall)
Chanukah is the Jewish eight-day, wintertime “festival of lights,” celebrated with a nightly menorah lighting, special prayers and fried foods. At the heart of the festival is the nightly menorah lighting. The menorah holds nine flames, one of which is the shamash (“attendant”), which is used to kindle the other eight lights. On the first night, we light just one flame. On the second night, an additional flame is lit. By the eighth night of Chanukah, all eight lights are kindled. Special blessings are recited, often to a traditional melody, before the menorah is lit, and traditional songs are sung afterward.

Why is this initiative named The Luz Houses?
The Luz is the name of a human bone which, according to our Jewish Sages, never decays and from which a body will be rebuilt. The endurance of singles is strong. Single life challenges individuals to rebuild and establish connections to illuminate their future years.

GENERATOR PROS
A powerful, affordable solution for homes and businesses – automatic standby generators
“If you’re the only business open during an outage then an obvious conclusion is that you may double or even triple your usual revenue per hour.” – Craig, Owner of Shepp Electric Company, Inc., the area’s ONLY Family Owned and Operated Generac Dealer.
The focus on standby generators and their ability to keep homes and businesses operating is an understandable development since each year hundreds of thousands go without power and the numbers are climbing.
Standby Protection 24/7. PERMANENT INSTALLED on Natural Gas or Propane
Back-up power is now surprisingly affordable and is a wise business decision. Compared to the expense of lost revenue and inventory spoilage, an automatic standby genset is a bargain that will provide years of reliable service. Many homeowners want the same protection, too: “It’s easy to see how quickly this investment will pay for itself. An average store may recoup the cost of a backup system during its first outage. Having standby power is the best way to stay in business. It is also one of the smartest investments for homes in northeastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. Compared to the cost of a flooded basement without the sump pump, no heat, frozen water pipes, no stove and no well water an automatic standby system can be a lifesaver.”
In order to assist you with making the right standby power investment we strongly advise you to consult with the area’s Leading Generac® “Premier” and Industrial Warranty Service
Dealer and Installer for 30 years, Shepp Electric Company, Inc., who will conduct a free site survey and electrical load analysis in order to recommend the best size and placement of the system. Whether for home or business, please feel free to call Christina, Michelle or Rachel at the office Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 877-423-9010, or visit their website at generatorpros.com to view information about all their services and automatic standby generator systems by Generac Power Systems.
Over 6,000 Installed. Powering You With Comfort and Security
In addition, at generatorpros.com, you will find a wealth of information that is extremely helpful for your family and business about disaster preparedness, proper use of portable generators and the immediate link to current power outages along the entire North coast.
