WELCOME Dear Friends,

A

s a country and community, we are living in unprecedented and heart wrenching times. COVID-19 has not only created a health and economic crisis but a social and humanitarian crisis as well. Anxiety, depression and suicides are up. Domestic abuse is up. Additionally, the disproportionate health and economic impacts on underserved communities compound this crisis and the angst of the killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbury and Breonna Taylor and the continuing impact of racism have made these times very challenging. Sadly, we know that times of stress spark feelings of anger and resentment that can produce negativity and violence, and we have seen these emotions in front of us during the COVID-19 crisis, and the push for racial and social justice. As a culture-change and leadership organization that has trained almost one million students across its 26 years, Values-inAction Foundation recognizes that crises often times open eyes and move hearts to change. We are certain that all of us have been going through a period of self-assessment, evaluation and longing for positive change; and we wonder, what can we do? We have three words that can be the answer: Just Be Kind. Kindness is proven to turn around negative environments. Kindness begets kindness, dissipates anger and resentment, and forges a path of positive and tangible action. Kindness increases longevity, decreases toxicity, increases happiness and expands productivity. Kindness is what we want and need to eliminate racism, expand opportunity, create happy and healthy communities, and reduce toxic stress. That is why, with this Celebration of Goodness, Values-inAction Foundation is launching our “Cleveland to Kindland” initiative as part of our national Just Be Kind campaign. We believe that, if we all work together, Cleveland can become the kindest community and region, and we can set the example for the rest of the country. The power is in each of us to Just Be Kind and to pay it forward with our friends, neighbors, co-workers, and acquaintances. We individually may not be able to conquer COVID-19 or instantaneously reverse the scourge of racism and meanness, but we can Just Be Kind and shape a concept and a community called “Kindland.” The first thing you can do is visit www.Kindland.us and take the pledge to be kind and promote and document kindness in our community. If we all connect the dots by reporting kindness through the hashtags #Kindland and #JustBeKind, we will be able to document millions of acts of kindness in Cleveland. This will create a ripple effect and chain reaction that, in turn, will spark millions more acts of kindness. In

the process, Cleveland will become Kindland. The 2020 honorees are exemplars of Kindland. Senator Rob Portman, First Lady of Ohio Fran DeWine, former Cleveland Mayor Michael White, Kristin Warzocha and the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, and the Hebrew Free Loan Association of Northeast Ohio. You will see through their recognition statements and their tribute videos (viewable at viafdn.org) that they all have three things in common: Goodness, Kindness and Service. Their actions will inspire each of us to do more — more Goodness, more Kindness and more Service. We are also recognizing and profiling unsung heroes who have been on the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis: volunteers at the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, a police officer, a food service worker, an emergency room doctor, an educator. All have been the standard-bearers of our community while many were quarantined in their homes. They have sacrificed greatly, put their fears aside, and make society work through their Goodness, Kindness and Service. We give out two awards as part of the Celebration of Goodness: the Sam Miller Goodness Award and the Arnold R. Pinkney Award for Civic Leadership. Both Sam Miller and Arnold Pinkney — good friends, colleagues and co-leaders of the community — envisioned Northeast Ohio as a community of goodness and kindness. They were pragmatic and realized that goodness and kindness were aspirational visions, but they were resolute that Northeast Ohio remain determined to get there. Let’s start now. There is a third award that we will be giving out in the future: The Mikey George Kindland Award. Mikey George, who will be receiving a posthumous Sam Miller Goodness Award this year, was the first mainstreamed Down syndrome student at St. Edward High School. His everyday actions, kindness, enthusiasm, and love transformed the school. As a result of Mikey’s zest for life and impact on others, the nonprofit Awakening Angels was born. Awakening Angels is dedicated to funding biomedical research, educational initiatives, and social programs aimed at improving the quality of life for children and adults who are affected by Down syndrome, autism, and developmental disabilities. Mikey passed away from leukemia in June 2019. Kindland is, in part, dedicated to the kind of community he fostered and the Mikey George Kindland Award to be given away in 2021, we believe, is a fitting continuing remembrance of a very special young man. We hope you join us in making Cleveland Kindland, and we hope you enjoy this Celebration of Goodness.

Sam Miller Goodness Award Senator Rob Portman (Ohio) United States Senate

R

ob Portman was elected to represent Ohio in the U.S. Senate in 2010. He won re-election in 2016, winning 84 of Ohio’s 88 counties and receiving the second-highest vote total of any candidate in Ohio history. Rob Portman was born and raised in Cincinnati, where he still lives with his wife, Jane. Portman grew up in a small business family, and he continues to be a small business owner today. Portman and his family own the oldest continuously operating business in Ohio — the Golden Lamb Inn in Warren County. In his career, Portman has served as a U.S. Representative serving Cincinnati and the diverse, seven county Second District in southern Ohio, as well as U.S. Trade Representative and Director of the Office of Management and Budget for the George W. Bush Administration.

During his time in public service, Portman has fought to pass policies that allow all Ohioans to achieve their God-given potential. From founding PreventionFIRST!, an anti-addiction non-profit based in Cincinnati, to spearheading the push to pass landmark addiction response legislation like his Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) and his anti-drug trafficking STOP Act, Portman has been a leader in working to turn the tide of addiction in our country. During his time in the U.S. House of Representatives, Portman teamed with the late-Stephanie Tubbs Jones to author the landmark Second Chance Act to provide federal funds to reentry programs for incarcerated individuals. More than $39 million in grants have come to Ohio through this legislation, and over 164,000 individuals have received support. As co-chair of the Senate Human Trafficking Caucus, Portman has also been a leader in cracking down on the sex trafficking industry. Notably, he authored the Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act (SESTA) in 2018, which helped bring to an end the use of online classified sites as a venue for traffickers. In addition to his work to help Ohioans, Portman has worked hard to pass policies aimed at promoting conservation and stewardship of our environment and our public lands. As co-chair of the Senate Great Lakes Environmental Task Force, he has led the protect the environmental ecosystem of the Great Lakes region. And just recently, Portman’s landmark Restore Our Parks Act to fund critical repairs at our National Park sites passed Congress with bipartisan support. Portman believes that a bipartisan approach is the best way to solve problems facing the people he represents. He was recently named as one of the top five most-bipartisan Senators according to the Lugar Center. For Senator Portman’s lifelong dedication to making our country, state and communities places of kindness and goodness, he is receiving the Sam Miller Goodness Award.

Michael White

Former Cleveland Mayor

F

ormer Cleveland Mayor Michael White does not shy away from promoting goodness within Cleveland, the city he loves. As mayor, Mr. White championed the Cleveland Browns and the Cleveland schools, advocating to take over the latter as mayor. He has promoted leadership within the inner city as the overseer of the Neighborhood Leadership Development Program which seeks to develop a new generation of engaged leaders for increased effectiveness in the neighborhoods of Cleveland. As a key member of the Mandel Foundation, and mirroring the mantra of the late Mort Mandel, he has promoted stellar leadership that is involved with community goodness at its core. For his lifelong dedication to goodness and leadership in Cleveland’s urban core, Michael White is receiving the Sam Miller Goodness Award.

Sam Miller Goodness Award HFLA of Northeast Ohio Hebrew Free Loan Association

S

am Miller shared with HFLA that in the early 20th century his father was a rag peddler in Cleveland and he needed a horse to drive the cart in which he had his goods which were peddled door to door. He was so poor that he could only afford a blind horse, which was purchased from an interest-free loan from Hebrew Free Loan Association. For over 116 years, HFLA has been lending interest-free loans to Clevelanders of all races, religions, ethnicities and backgrounds. These loans have gone to start businesses, fund education and take care of family and health needs. They have been a backstop and sliver of hope for many. For promoting goodness, respect, hope and love throughout Cleveland, Hebrew Free Loan Association of Cleveland is receiving the Sam Miller Goodness Award.

Fran DeWine First Lady of Ohio

F

irst Lady Fran DeWine understands kindness. She has been passionate about helping people, especially children. She studied home economics and has been teaching these skills her whole life – to her own children and grandchildren and friends, and to children all over the state through cooking demonstrations at the fair and storybook time at libraries. Since the 1990s, some of Mrs. DeWine’s most cherished work has been supporting children in the Becky DeWine School, located in Haiti’s Cite Soleil. The school began as a class of Kindergarteners and now feeds and educates more than 5,000 K-12 children in eight campuses.

Most recently, Mrs. DeWine has brought her passions – particularly for children and women’s issues – into her role as First Lady. Passionate about issues related to children’s hunger and nutrition, she has raised money and awareness for Ohio’s food banks and organizations, like Children’s Hunger Alliance, and has worked with the Ohio Department of Education and Ohio Department of Agriculture to better understand the summer food service program and the school breakfast program. Fran believes every mom wants to be a better mom, no matter their circumstances. She has raised awareness and funds for Moms2B – a prenatal and first-year-of-life educational course – in Columbus and championed an expansion of the non-profit to Dayton. She also hosted a baby shower for military moms-to-be in Ohio. First Lady Fran DeWine is a champion for early childhood education and literacy. She first learned about Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library when her grandchildren began receiving a free, age-appropriate book each month through the mail. Mrs. DeWine wanted every child in the state to have the same opportunity, which inspired the launch of the Ohio Governor’s Imagination Library. In August 2019, 93,483 children were enrolled. As of August 1, 2020, 190,810 children will be enrolled and receiving books. For her kindness and dedication to Ohio’s women and children, First Lady Fran DeWine is receiving the Sam Miller Goodness Award.

Arnold R. Pinkney Award for Civic Leadership Kristin Warzocha

President & CEO, Greater Cleveland Food Bank

T

he Greater Cleveland Food Bank (GCFB) has been one of the great safety nets of Northeast Ohio for 40 years. During the COVID-19 crisis, Kristin and her team experienced a tsunami of need from families experiencing unemployment – many for the first time, individuals already lacking food and other essentials and Cleveland’s most hungry and vulnerable populations – especially children and seniors. Kristin and her team have mobilized additional resources for increased funding, volunteers and support throughout the community to keep up with the increased demand. Since March, members of the Ohio National Guard and staff members have braved doing their jobs on the front lines of the virus while many members of our community were quarantined in their homes. They delivered their product and service with kindness, compassion and smiles. While they have mobilized in this critical time of need, they are also a longtime community resource and backstop against hunger and poverty – providing more than 47 million pounds of food last year to 1,000 non-profit program partners. This happens day in and day out every single year.

A prominent professor once said that “Food is love. Food brings people together.” For bringing people together in the spirit of community, kindness, civic leadership and love, Kristin Warzocha and the Greater Cleveland Food Bank are receiving the Arnold R. Pinkney Award for Civic Leadership.

Thank you and congratulations to the Celebration of Goodness Class of 2020
