WELCOME Dear Friends,
A
s a country and community, we are living in unprecedented times as COVID-19, the Delta Variant, social justice introspection, political division, and anger touch at every level of society. In addition to a rise in cases of anxiety, depression, suicides, and homicides, a general lack of social interaction has led to even further segmentation of different social-economic, racial, gender, political, and ethnic groups. All of this is alone is concerning, but what’s more concerning is that the dysfunction and angst we’re feeling is trickling down to our children. How can society, schools and children navigate through these troubled waters? As a culture-change, social-emotional learning and leadership organization that has trained almost 1.1 million students across 27 years, Values-in-Action Foundation has struggled with this question. What can we do? What can society do? What can schools do? What can parents do? We have three words: Just Be Kind. Kindness is proven to turn around negative environments. Kindness begets kindness, dissipates anger and resentment, and forges a path of positive and tangible action. Kindness increases longevity, decreases toxicity, increases happiness, and expands productivity. Kindness is what we want and need to eliminate racism, expand opportunity, create happy and healthy communities, and reduce toxic stress. In 2020, Values-in-Action launched our national Just Be Kind campaign which includes our own NE Ohio-focused community model, Kindland. The objective of Kindland is for Cleveland, Akron, and Northeast Ohio to become a Kind-Land, enveloping schools, religious organizations, fraternal groups, businesses, government and families in the daily action and activity of kindness. So far, 350 leaders and peer organizations have become partners of Kindland, and through these partners we have documented almost 18,000,000 acts of kindness since the pandemic broke out. For example: 414,000 food donations from the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, 400,000 families served from Catholic Charities, 41,000 families served from the Kosher Food Pantry, 150,000 people served through blood donations from the Red Cross, 1,000 Christmas meals served by Edwins, 6,662 grants made by the Cleveland Foundation, 150 free concerts performed by the Cleveland Orchestra and 2,600 free meals delivered by East Mount Zion Church to residents in the Fairfax Neighborhood. To see the full, ever-growing list of acts of kindness, visit www.BeKindland.com. These reported acts
of kindness are but a fraction of the goodness that lightens the load and lifts up hearts in Northeast Ohio, and each act inspires others to do more and create the community to which we aspire; one in which mentorship is a daily activity; one in which poverty is tamped down and opportunity is expanded; one in which niceness, civility, the benefit of the doubt, and encouragement dot the landscape. We believe that, if we all work together, Cleveland, Akron and Northeast Ohio can become the kindest community and region, and we can set the example for the rest of the country. The power is in each of us to Just Be Kind and to pay it forward with our friends, neighbors, co-workers, and acquaintances. We may not be able to instantaneously conquer COVID-19 or immediately reverse the scourge of racism and meanness, but we can Just Be Kind and shape a concept and a community called “Kindland.” Please become part of this movement by taking the pledge to become a Citizen of Kindland at www.BeKindland.com and document acts of kindness that you see, read about or do on social media by tagging #Kindland or #JustBeKind on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Northeast Ohio schools are also taking part in the Kindland movement, and we are proud that, starting in February, all Cleveland Metropolitan schools will be embedded in Kindland. Our Celebration of Goodness honorees are the purveyors of Kindland. The Cleveland Clinic, celebrating its 100th year and represented by Dr. Tom Mihaljevic; the iconic Cleveland Orchestra, represented by Richard Smucker, André Gremillet and Franz Welser-Möst; India Pierce Lee, who leads the distribution of $130.7 million from the Cleveland Foundation to local agencies; and United States Housing and Urban Development Secretary Marcia Fudge, who leads the effort to improve lives and shelter the poor in our urban communities across the nation. We give out two awards as part of the Celebration of Goodness: the Sam Miller Goodness Award and the Arnold R. Pinkney Award for Civic Leadership. Both Sam Miller and Arnold Pinkney — good friends, colleagues, and co-leaders of the community — envisioned Northeast Ohio as a place of goodness and kindness. They were pragmatic and realized that goodness and kindness were aspirational visions, but they were resolute that Northeast Ohio remain determined to get there. Our honorees help us get there. We must all help us get there.

2021 CELEBRATION OF GOODNESS Sam Miller Goodness Award
Cleveland Clinic
Represented by Tom Mihaljevic, MD
T
his year, Cleveland Clinic turned 100 years old. For a century, it has been the pinnacle of health care in Greater Cleveland, and how fortunate we are to have the country’s #2 hospital and the #1 heart program in our own backyard! Led by CEO and President Dr. Tom Mihaljevic, the Clinic’s standard of excellence is matched only by the hearts of its tens of thousands of caregivers. Cleveland Clinic’s slogan is “Every life deserves world-class care,” and its core values that embrace care and empathy have created a culture that make “care” both tangible and viable. Each day, the Cleveland Clinic cares for people and about people. During the pandemic, the clinic’s caregivers remained vigilant in providing the highest quality care to patients despite the risks and challenges of being on the frontlines of COVID. Cleveland Clinic collaborated with other hospitals in the region to better meet the demand on resources so no one location became over-burdened and patients would have safe access to the care they needed. Under the stellar leadership Dr. Mihaljevic and the efforts of his able team, Cleveland Clinic delivered goodness, kindness, caring and love to our community. For all of these reasons, Cleveland Clinic and its CEO Dr. Tom Mihaljevic are deserving of the Sam Miller Goodness Award. Sam Miller, a longtime benefactor, would indeed be proud!
India Pierce Lee Cleveland Foundation
A
s the head of Grantmaking at the Cleveland Foundation, India Pierce Lee cares about community. She cares about making Cleveland better, kinder, more innovative, more inclusive, more collaborative and more resilient. She cares about the neighborhoods, the schools, the children, the adults, the elders and the businesses. And she demonstrates that caring by striving to eliminate lead paint poisoning, by bolstering learning and graduation, by boosting job creation and job distribution, and by giving everyone a chance the run the race of life in a positive way. Her background is community, and she strives through grants as well as through the powerful and influential force of her personality to make community better, to forge connections and to welcome people to the table. When the community was hurting because of the pandemic, India and the Cleveland Foundation mobilized with others to create the COVID-19 Rapid Response Fund. For her leadership, kindness, goodness and good cheer — and for her collaborative spirit — India Pierce Lee deserves the Sam Miller Goodness Award.
2021 CELEBRATION OF GOODNESS Sam Miller Goodness Award
The Cleveland Orchestra Represented by: André Gremillet, Richard Smucker & Franz Welser-Möst
T
he Cleveland Orchestra. The name itself represents collaboration, harmony, community pride, and worldwide recognition. Led by Music Director Franz WelserMöst, CEO André Gremillet and Board Chairman Richard Smucker, The Cleveland Orchestra is one of the most sought-after performing ensembles in the world, setting standards of extraordinary artistic excellence, creative music-making, and community programming. In 2020, Covid 19 changed everything…everything except The Cleveland Orchestra’s commitment to serving the community, and while Severance Hall was silent for the first time in over 100 years, the music didn’t stop. The Orchestra’s musicians presented an extraordinary number of outdoor performances and socially distanced events including more than 30 concerts in a Salute to Frontline Workers on the campuses of the Cleveland Clinic, Metro and University Hospitals along with pop-up and driveway concerts throughout our region. The Orchestra also provided online, classical music performances, and special daily Mindful Music Moments to help kids and families reduce stress and anxiety, while its musicians and teaching artists held lessons in parking lots and driveways and through Zoom and Facetime to keep its programming available to our community’s schools and neighborhoods. For all of these efforts that illustrate the power of music to unite us, transcend obstacles, and strengthen our connections to others, Richard Smucker, André Gremillet, Franz Welser-Möst, and The Cleveland Orchestra are receiving the Sam Miller Goodness Award.
Arnold R. Pinkney Award for Civic Leadership Secretary Marcia L. Fudge
U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
T
he late Stephanie Tubbs Jones once called her longtime friend and aide Marcia Fudge a superstar. What we believe she meant is that now-Secretary Fudge is the consummate public servant and servant leader, striving to serve her community and country. She has done so for Cleveland, the disadvantaged and vulnerable, and for all Americans, by being her authentic self. This authenticity is comprised of passion, compassion, kindness, faith, fairness, empathy, service to others and leadership. Her record shows accomplishments in education, nutrition, housing for the homeless, combating obesity and providing jobs. Her welcoming personality and collaborative spirit has made her a leader in bipartisan cooperation to get things done within Congress, and both inside and outside of her party. Now, as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, she is using leadership and service to spawn a new era of affordable housing and dignified living for all. Secretary Fudge was a valued protégée of the late Arnold Pinkney. For her years of service to community and country, Values-in-Action is proud to present the Honorable Marcia Fudge with the Arnold R. Pinkney Award for Civic Leadership.
