EDITOR'S LETTER AUG/SEPT 2017

Greeting all! We are more than half way through 2017 and so much has changed. Our country as seen a rash of violence and the entertainment industry has taken some losses and hits. Yet one thing remains the same, we all love to see pretty images. Let’s be honest and ask ourselves, have we ever taken a moment to think what goes in to creating those beautiful and eye pleasing images? What sacrifices are made or who must work long hours so that the one image you find pleasant enough to share on social media and comment on comes to fruition? So much of what we see is constructed to appear pleasant but there is a journey and a story behind every resulting image, movie, show and moment of entertainment our culture seems to thirst for. It is not unlike our lives, where sacrifice and hard works is the way to get the life we desire with the visuals that please us. Life behind the red carpet is not as easy as it looks, it takes long hours and teamwork. While the end resulting visual is approved by the public the journey to create it has ups and downs. It is during these ups and downs that we find our strength as an individual as well as, as a part of a team. Much like life it takes good and bad to strengthen our resolve. If we look at our life as if it were a moment on the red carpet we could put the good photos on display and file the not so pleasing photographs away from any public scrutiny. However, life just isn’t that easy and simplistic. Life is a journey and what makes it visually appealing and emotionally fulfilling is the journey it takes to get to our debut moment on life’s red carpet. This issue is dedicated to everyone who has a role on the team and gives of themselves with their talents to make my visions come true. I adore each one of you and am blessed to work with you. YOU GUYS ROCK! Chea K. Woolfolk

Use that extra eye cream from your daily skin ritual on those cuticles. The more you hydrate your cuticles, the stronger your nails will be. #TEAMSTRONGNAILS For smudge-proof eye makeup, take blotting tissue to remove the excess oil and makeup from the eye area. Then, apply a few small dots of concealer one or two shades lighter than your skin tone. bThis will help make eye color pop and hold things in place. Use blotting papers to manage oil and shine in your TZone. The blotting papers are also convenient for cleaning up around the eyes Always use a moisturizer with SPF in the morning before you walk out in to the world. Even in the winter months this is essential to skincare!

Clean out your makeup bag at least once a year to get rid of old products that may be expired or you no longer use. This will also breath new li into your daily makeup routine and inspire you to try new looks! To minimize pores, use a pore-minimizing facial wash followed by a toner. Make sure the toner is alcohol-free so it won’t dry out your skin. Healthy clean skin is your best accessory! The healthier you are, the healthier your hair! Take a daily multi-vitamin with Biotin to help hair grow faster.

When at home, you're probably relaxing, playing with the kids or tackling chores. What you aren't likely doing is thinking about the air you're breathing. Unfortunately, the reality is poor indoor air quality in residential spaces is a major problem.

Allergens and indoor air quality: 4 steps to a healthier home Article Contributed By: BPT

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission points to a growing body of scientific evidence that the air within homes can be more polluted than the outdoor air in large, industrialized cities. In fact, EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) studies found levels of about a dozen common organic pollutants to be two to five times higher inside homes than outside, regardless if the home is in rural or industrial areas. While you can't control the allergens and pollutants lurking outside, there are many ways to take action inside the home to improve your indoor air quality. From installing BEAM central vacuum systems to implementing smart moisture mitigation strategies, follow these four steps and breathe easier at home: Step 1: Eliminate dust mites Dust mites can be prevalent, especially in bedroom spaces. Wash all sheets, blankets, pillowcases and bed covers in hot water that is at least 130 degrees F. to kill dust mites and remove allergens, notes the Mayo Clinic. If bedding can't be washed in hot water, put items in the dryer for at least 15 minutes at a temperature above 130 degrees F. To further prevent mites in sleeping spaces, use dust-proof or allergen-blocking covers on mattresses, box springs and pillows. If you have kids, don't forget to wash stuffed animals regularly in order to sanitize.

Step 2: Vacuum smarter One of the easiest things you can do to improve indoor air quality is to vacuum thoroughly and regularly on all levels. However, traditional vacuums are heavy and difficult to move to different floors. Furthermore, they can kick up more dust into the air than they are removing. Due to these concerns, many homeowners are considering the benefits of central vacuum systems. For example, BEAM central vacuums remove air, dirt and dust vacuumed from the home, whereas conventional vacuums may filter dirt and dust but recirculate the same air via the exhaust back into the home. BEAM Central vacuum maintenance is easy because the units have a self-cleaning filter that helps improve air quality during the vacuuming process. How do central vacuums work? These systems have one permanent, hidden power unit with inlets in walls throughout the home that attach to power hoses and accessories. BEAM central vacuum systems are engineered with motors that provide powerful suction for a deeper clean; however, with the power unit located away from the living area, the quiet hush of airflow is all you will hear. Step 3: Freshen air wisely Open windows aren't always the best way to bring in fresh air. When pollen levels are high, the spores can come into a home and stick to every surface. On high-allergen days, refresh air and cool the home with fans or the air conditioner, and clean preferably with a central vacuum to maintain high indoor air quality. As an additional line of defense against dust mite debris and allergens, you should use a HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter with your central furnace and air conditioning unit, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. If that's too costly, the EPA says filters with a MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value) between 7 and 13 are likely to be nearly as effective as true HEPA filters at controlling most airborne indoor particles. No matter which you use, try to change the filter every three months. Step 4: Mitigate moisture Mold thrives in dark, damp climates, so it's important to eliminate places for growth. To start, be aware of moisture levels throughout the home. Always use the bathroom exhaust fan to inhibit moisture buildup. Fix leaky faucets as quickly as possible and stay on top of maintenance for appliances like the refrigerator and air conditioner. Additionally, consider using a dehumidifier to decrease the amount of moisture inside the home. This can be particularly important during rainy seasons or in basement or cellar spaces, if your home has them. You can breathe easy with these four easy steps to better indoor air quality. Beat the heat: Tips to stay healthy and hydrated Article Contributed By: BPT Americans love summertime and with good reason. It is the best time for outdoor fun and travel with family. Many people enjoy outdoor activities such as bicycling, kayaking and hiking, and kids are more active with sports. One thing to keep in mind when out and about in the summer heat is to stay properly hydrated. Unfortunately, many of us are not drinking enough water. In fact, 36 percent of adult Americans drink only three or fewer cups of water per day, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Here are some tips for healthy hydration. Replace your electrolytes Engaging in physical activity when it is hot outside means you lose water which has to be replaced. You are also losing electrolytes (sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate) which need to be replaced. Very high temperatures - especially for a prolonged period - can be dangerous, especially for seniors.

Ideally, anyone engaging in outdoor activity in the heat or even an indoor exercise program should drink 8 to 12 ounces of fluid every 15 to 20 minutes during a session. If exercising exceeds an hour, a beverage that contains electrolytes is preferable to plain water. That is why most sports drinks contain salt. Of course anyone can easily make their own sports drink by adding a quarter to a half teaspoon of salt per liter or 32 ounces of water. Replacing lost electrolytes is important because they help to regulate cardiovascular and neurological functions, fluid balance and oxygen delivery. Avoid hyponatremia Replacing water without sufficient salt can produce hyponatremia, a potentially deadly condition caused by too little sodium in the bloodstream. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and can include nausea, muscle cramps, disorientation, confusion, seizures, coma and even death. There have been several documented cases of illness and even deaths from hyponatremia over the past several years. According to the British Medical Journal, 16 runners have died as a result of too little sodium and over-hydration, while another 1,600 have become seriously ill. It is true that water intoxication is more commonly seen among extreme athletes, but older individuals may also be at risk for several reasons. Exercise and aging It is important to be active but be careful not to push yourself especially in high heat. As we age, our kidneys become less efficient at conserving the salt we need when the body is stressed, such as from dehydration and high temperatures. When combined with common medications such as diuretics, which are commonly prescribed to treat hypertension, the result could be a greater risk for hyponatremia. When you exercise, your body's metabolism works at a much higher rate, breaking down and regenerating tissues and creating waste metabolites that need to be flushed out of your system. However, regardless of your level of activity, you still need to maintain good hydration. So remember to always drink plenty of water to beat the heat, but you may also want to up your intake of electrolytes.

Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. In fact, approximately 36,000 blood donations are needed each day nationwide. However, during the summer months, it is typically more difficult for blood donations to keep pace with demand, and this can result in summer shortages. To help bridge the gap and encourage lifesaving donations, World Blood Donor Day serves as a reminder to give blood and platelets during this crucial time. A will to give Nexcare Brand is partnering with the American Red Cross to raise awareness regarding the importance of blood and platelet donation during the summer months through the ninth annual Nexcare Give program. This year's theme is "Roll Up a Sleeve and Give Where You Live," celebrating all those who give in their communities around the world. Limited-edition Nexcare Give bandages will be available for free to presenting donors at participating Red Cross donor sites and blood drives around the country, through June 14, World Blood Donor Day. Nexcare Give Bandages will also be available as a bonus in select Nexcare Waterproof Bandage packs at retailers nationwide, as well as by mail, while supplies last, at Nexcaregive.com.

Getting involved

The program comes at a time when new research from Nexcare Brand shows: * More than one-third (36 percent) of U.S. adults have never given blood; * More than one-quarter (28 percent) do not know their blood type; * Despite the life-changing impact, awareness is low. More than one-quarter (28 percent) say the reason they have never given blood before is because they have never even thought about it. To bring to light the power of blood donation, the Nexcare Give program is raising awareness worldwide about how you can get involved. "Blood donation is a cause that's not only important in our country and around the world, but also in the lives of people, everywhere," says supermodel and Nexcare Give spokesperson Niki Taylor. "Every year, millions of Americans need blood, and people have the power to make a difference in about an hour that it takes to give. Now is a great opportunity to make a big impact, starting with your local community."

Blood donations are an ongoing need yearround. If you've never given blood before, now is the perfect time to start. You can visit Nexcaregive.com to find your local blood center and visit their website to determine whether you can be a donor. Donors of all blood types are needed to give this summer. Type O negative donors are especially needed, because they have the universal blood type that can help anyone who needs blood. O negative is often used during emergencies when there is no time to determine a patient's blood type. Once you've determined whether you are eligible to donate, the next step is to contact your nearest blood center to book an appointment. You may also be able to donate at a convenient location such as your school, your workplace, a neighborhood community center or your place of worship, if a blood drive is hosted there - be on the lookout for drives in your community. If you aren't eligible to donate blood, you can still participate by pledging your support on the Nexcaregive.com website.

One blood donation goes a long way

You can even host a virtual blood drive through the American Red Cross SleevesUp program, which is an online tool that allows supporters to create a virtual blood drive and encourage colleagues, friends and family members to give blood or platelets in four easy steps. Visit redcrossblood.org/sleevesup to create your own campaign, or visit Niki Taylor's page and pledge to give at rcblood.org/Niki.

A single donation can help save the lives of more than one person. Patients can need blood for a number of reasons, including surgeries, treatment for various accidents, cancer and other illnesses.

To learn more about the Nexcare Give program, find blood donation centers in your area and pledge your support for blood donation to make a positive impact today, visit Nexcaregive.com.

FINDING A PATH TO YOUR MEDICINES America's healthcare environment is constantly evolving, and the path to affordable medicines is not always easy to find. But you don't have to feel lost. There are programs available to help. At the core of Pfizer's commitment to patients is the belief that everyone deserves access to quality care, including when it comes to their medicines. That's why for more than 30 years, Pfizer has empowered patients in need with assistance and information, so they can get access to the medicines prescribed by their doctor. Today, that help is provided through Pfizer RxPathwaysÂŽ, which connects eligible patients to a full range of Pfizer assistance programs that offer insurance support, co-pay assistance, and medicines for free or at a savings. Patients can talk to trained Medicine Access Counselors who work with each person to understand their unique situation and guide them to the Pfizer programs or resources that can best meet their needs. Among those receiving assistance from Pfizer is caregiver Suzanne. "I called Pfizer and said our daughter is on medication and I'm really afraid we're going to lose insurance," Suzanne said. "Pfizer was a friendly voice on the other line saying, 'It's okay, we'll take care of you.'" Suzanne is one of millions helped by one of Pfizer's comprehensive assistance programs. Through state-of-the-art facilities and highly trained staff, Pfizer helped more than 1.6 million patients receive over 19 million Pfizer prescriptions for free or at a savings over the last five years (20122016).* Healthcare can be difficult to navigate - especially during stressful times and Pfizer RxPathways could help. If you or someone you know needs assistance getting access to or paying for Pfizer medicines, dial the toll-free phone number 1-844-989-PATH (7284) or visit www.PfizerRxPathways.com to learn more about available options.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS BENEFITS OF VOLUNTEERING?

In the business world, we hear a lot about the bottom line and quarterly reports. For those in the nonprofit sector, it's often a matter of reaching fundraising goals and achieving their mission statement. No matter what kind of organization you work for, there are big-picture goals, but of course there are more. Increasingly, companies are realizing that part of this big picture is giving their employees the opportunity to volunteer for worthy causes, even paying them to do so. These efforts can lead to some serious collective gains. For example, according to The Health of America Community Investment Report, employees from the 36 independent Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) companies volunteered more than 400,000 hours and donated over $11 million in 2016 alone. Individual efforts really do add up. Whatever program your employer has in place, here are some of the enormous personal benefits that come with volunteering.

Productivity. Many would like to volunteer but just don't have the time. Who doesn't want to take a little time off and get away from their busy lifestyle and just relax? In a way, volunteering can help you do just that. According to a study in the Harvard Business Review, helping or giving your time to others can make you feel like you have more time, and in turn, make you a more productive worker. Health. Many studies have found that people who regularly volunteer tend to lead healthier lives and have a reduced risk of heart disease. The jury is still out as to why exactly this is, but giving back to others seems to reduce stress, build confidence and increase a person's sense of satisfaction. These psychological factors play an enormous role in our physical health. While they help create connections and build community, volunteers also get a huge amount of personal benefits from their work. Better health, a sense of satisfaction and joy that comes with helping others are only a few of the reasons why more people are deciding to give their time to others. Community. In our digital age when everyone is engrossed in their smartphones and seem to be locked in their own world, connecting with others - whether it's those in need or other volunteers - is more important than ever. This is what happened when BCBS companies spearheaded efforts to improve health care access for the uninsured and underinsured. Volunteers helped at mobile clinics and food banks and with educational programs, making invaluable contributions and connections in their communities. Family. When their employer gives them the opportunity to take a day or two off to volunteer, many people bring their family along. The reason is simple: coming together to do something for others is an incredible bonding experience and can really strengthen relationships.

U.S. FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION (FDA) APPROVES BOTULINUM TOXIN FOR TREATMENT OF LOWER LIMB SPASTICITY IN ADULTS Currently the ONLY botulinum toxin approved by the FDA for the treatment of upper and lower limb spasticity in adults and also for the treatment of lower limb spasticity in children ages two and older Spasticity is a condition in which there is an abnormal increase in muscle tone or stiffness in one or more muscles, which might interfere with movement. The spasticity is usually caused by damage to nerve pathways in the brain or spinal cord that control muscle movement.1 In adults, approximately one in three stroke patients, one in three patients with spinal cord injury, one in six patients with traumatic brain injury, and two in three patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) will develop lower limb spasticity.2,3 Adult patients with Cerebral Palsy (CP) also commonly experience spasticity in their lower limbs.2 "Adults who have developed spasticity as a result of a stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, spinal cord injury, or traumatic brain injury now have another option when seeking treatment that helps reduce the effects of the increased muscle tone in their lower extremities," said Alexandre Lebeaut, MD, Executive Vice-President, R&D, Chief Scientific Officer, Ipsen. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has expanded the approved use of Dysport® (abobotulinumtoxinA) for injection for the treatment of spasticity in adults, based on the supplemental Biologics License Application (sBLA) in lower limb spasticity submitted by Ipsen Biopharmaceuticals, Inc. This approval marks the second FDA approval for Dysport® in less than one year. In July 2016, Dysport® was approved to treat pediatric patients with lower limb spasticity aged two and older, making it the first and only botulinum toxin approved for this indication. "We are proud that Dysport® is now available to support an additional population of patients- including those adults managing their spasticity associated with stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury, Multiple Sclerosis, or Cerebral Palsy- and that Ipsen is able to provide comprehensive support offerings, including the IPSEN CARES® patient assistance program and the C.L.I.M.B.® injector training platform for healthcare providers." said Cynthia Schwalm, President, North America Commercial Operations, Ipsen. Dysport® and all botulinum toxins have a Boxed Warning which states that the effects of the botulinum toxin may spread from the area of injection to other areas of the body, causing symptoms similar to those of botulism. Those symptoms include swallowing and breathing difficulties that can be life-threatening. Dysport® should not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to any botulinum toxin preparation or to any of the components; or in the presence of infection at the proposed injection site(s); or in patients known to be allergic to cow's milk protein. Hypersensitivity reactions including anaphylaxis have been reported. The potency Units of Dysport® are specific to the preparation and assay method utilized. They are not interchangeable with other preparations of botulinum toxin products. Please see below for additional Important Safety Information. The approval is based on a Phase III, multi-center, prospective, double-blind, randomized placebo-controlled study, in which adult patients treated with Dysport® following a stroke or traumatic brain injury showed improvement in muscle tone at the ankle joint, measured by the LS mean change from baseline on the Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) at Week 4. The duration of response for the majority of patients within the study was between 12-16 weeks. In this study, some patients experienced a longer duration of response (approximately 20 weeks). The degree and pattern of muscle at the time of re-injection may necessitate alterations in the dose of Dysport® and muscles to be injected. Repeat Dysport® treatment should be administered when the effect of a previous injection has diminished, but no sooner than 12 weeks after the previous injection.

What is Dysport®? If swallowing problems are severe, food or liquids may go into your lungs. People who already have swallowing or breathing problems before receiving Dysport® have the highest risk of getting these problems.Spread of toxin effects. In some cases, the effects of botulinum toxin may affect areas of the body away from the injection site and cause symptoms of a serious condition called botulism. The symptoms of botulism include: loss of strength and muscle weakness all over the body, double vision, blurred vision and drooping eyelids, hoarseness or change or loss of voice, trouble saying words clearly, loss of bladder control, trouble breathing, or trouble swallowing. These problems could make it unsafe for you to drive a car, operate machinery, or do other dangerous activities. Do not take Dysport® if you are allergic to Dysport® or any of the ingredients in Dysport® (See Medication Guide for ingredients), or are allergic to cow's milk protein; had an allergic reaction to any other botulinum toxin product, such as Myobloc® (rimabotulinumtoxinB), Botox® (onabotulinumtoxinA), or Xeomin® (incobotulinumtoxinA); or have a skin infection at the planned injection site. Before you take Dysport®, tell your doctor about all your medical conditions, including if you have a disease that affects your muscles and nerves (such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis [ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease], myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome), as you may be at increased risk of serious side effects, including difficulty swallowing or breathing. Before you take Dysport®, tell your doctor if you have or have had any of the following: a side effect from any botulinum toxin in the past; breathing problems such as asthma or emphysema; swallowing problems; bleeding problems; diabetes; and slow heartbeat, or other problems with your heart rate or rhythm. Tell your doctor if you have plans to have surgery, had surgery on your face, have weakness of your forehead muscles (such as trouble raising your eyebrows), have drooping eyelids, or have any other change in the way your face normally looks. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding or planning to breast-feed. It is not known if Dysport® can harm your unborn baby. It is not known if Dysport® passes into breast milk.

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Using Dysport with certain other medicines may cause serious side effects. Do not start any new medicines until you have told your doctor that you have received Dysport® in the past. Especially tell your doctor if you have received injections of botulinum toxin in the last four months or in the past. Be sure your doctor knows exactly which product you received such as Myobloc® (rimabotulinumtoxinB), Botox® (onabotulinumtoxinA), or Xeomin® (incobotulinumtoxinA); have recently received an antibiotic by injection; take muscle relaxants; take an allergy or cold medicine; or take a sleep medicine. Most common side effects of Dysport® in adults with upper limb spasticity include: urinary tract infection, muscle weakness, musculoskeletal pain, fall, depression, stuffy or runny nose and sore throat, and dizziness. Most common side effects of Dysport® in adults with lower limb spasticity include: muscle weakness, pain in your arms or legs, and fall. Most common side effects of Dysport® in people with cervical dystonia include: muscle weakness, dry mouth, feeling of tiredness, muscle pain, problems speaking, eye problems, difficulty swallowing, injection site pain, and headache. Most common side effects of Dysport® in children (2 to 17 years of age) with lower limb spasticity include: upper respiratory infection, stuffy or runny nose and sore throat, flu, cough, and fever. Tell your doctor if you have any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away. These are not all the possible side effects of Dysport®. For more information, ask your doctor or pharmacist. The second event that satisfied my hunger was The Diabetics Cook-Off the Vegan Edition. This event was a pleasant surprise that definitely satisfied the taste buds. Hosted by Louisville’s own Dawne Gee the event had multiple layers and purposes. Yes, it was a cook off yet, the goal was to motivate and educate while showcases the truth that vegan does not mean flavorless. The competing chefs each prepared a dish and the lucky guest could sample and vote. Each dish was vegan but oh so flavorful. Many in the room were amazed that their own thoughts on vegan were shattered and replaced with a pleasant experience.

Retirement is one of the best choices that I have made. I was initially contemplating on continuing to work until age 65. I’m 63 now. I had been off for seven months with a job-related injury. I had to make a choice of going back to work or to retire. I retired March 1, 2017.Retirement has brought an abundance of joy. So often, people think about whether they’re going to make it and that was my thought as well. Sure, it’s something that’s very important, but as for me, I lingered over insurance expenses, money for leisure, such as travel, plays and just a continued lifestyle in general. I didn’t really want anything to change other than for the best. I feel better; I think better; I have a better look on life. I truly love everybody. I have a peace of mind and “joy unspeakable, full of hopeful things to come with the glory of God.” (1 Peter 1:8) Despite everyone’s differences, we all have one thing in common, which is needs. We need to eat. We need to have material things in life, even though our lifestyles are different we want our needs to be met. “So as a man thinks in his heart, so is he (Proverbs 23:7),” therefore, it’s how we think of ourselves. If you think you can, then, you will prevail. If you think you can’t, then you will fail. Let us think positive about ourselves, in which we speak good things into our life as a positive impact on us and the things we decide to do in life. None of us know what tomorrow holds. We don’t know if we will live or die or if one of life’s unfortunate mishaps may occur when least expected, but we want to be prepared with whatever life chooses. Financially, we want to be prepared, so to retire is a big step in life. There are people that have worked all their lives; some at the same company 30-35 years and then there’s people like me who went to work full time after a divorce of 34 years, with 10-12 years in the workforce. It is scary to think that you have not built up enough time to retire to make sure you are secure in life. When that (retirement) time comes, yes, these things matter and they are important, not just important to you, but to God as well. I thank God, every day, in the name of Jesus. I could not have made the decision without him. If we lay hold to his word, pray every day and hear his voice, then we can step right into what he is calling us to do. What a blessing! I’ve never missed a meal, bills are paid on time, there’s shelter over my head, but God! He is so good! I put him first and he keeps blessing me every day. Go for it! Retire peacefully! Retire joyfully, whether out of choice or need. “God will supply your every need according to his riches and glory.” (Philippians 4:19) With Joy, Joyce E. Jones

Domestic violence prevention is my cause, my calling, and my purpose. Between 2001 and 2012 there were 6,488 soldiers killed in Afghanistan and Iraq combined. During that same period 11,766 women were murdered right here in the United States by current or ex male partners. It is reported that 85% of women are abused in this country. This is not acceptable but this is not going away on its own. Everything I have experienced has brought me to this point. I was sexually abused as a young child and continued the victim role in an abusive marriage for 16 years. I know first – hand the effects of domestic violence on a victim and her children. And I understand the fear that makes a woman stay for far too long. I want to change the world by changing the minds of women and children. And not just those in an environment of violence, but all women and children. Those who say, “that would never happen to me” need to understand why it could happen to them. My ex-husband was not a bad man, per se, but he had anger issues that stemmed from his childhood. He was very insecure but these issues did not present themselves at the beginning of our relationship. In the beginning of our relationship he was charming and kind and he was good with my two-year-old son. When I first saw his anger directed at a dog I made excuses for his behavior and of course I thought he would never act that way with me. But I was very wrong about that. I hid my scars and put on a smile and pretended every day to be someone I wasn’t. I recall going out of town on a business trip. On my return flight home, I was seated next to a young man. We had a very nice conversation. As we were preparing to land the young man looked at me and said, “You just became a different person so whatever it is you are going home to can’t be good for you.” I asked if it was really that obvious and he replied yes. I guess I didn’t always hide it well. People don’t generally think about the effects of domestic violence. But the effects are wide-spread. It not only effects the people involved but it also effects the community as a whole. The average cost of an emergency room visit for an intimate partner violence incident is $948.00. There are an estimated 18,500,000 mental health center visits due to intimate partner violence every year. Taxpayers fund most of these incidents.

But even greater issues exist. Children are severely affected by exposure to violence in the home. In general, 70% of men who abuse their female partners also abuse their children. As abuse becomes more severe against the female partner, the chance of the child experiencing abuse increases by 300%. Of the children who witness abuse by the fathers, 40% suffer from anxiety, 48% suffer from depression, and 60% act out with siblings, peers, and those in authority. We owe our children better than that and not a day goes by that I don’t wish I had given my sons better than that. I can’t go back and change their childhood but if I can change things for one child their pain will not be in vain. I believe that the only way to make a difference in this epidemic is two-fold. First, I would like to create a funding stream that would provide relocation benefits for individuals and families escaping a domestic violence household. The greatest need for those trapped by domestic violence is housing and relocation expenses. Domestic violence is the 3rd leading cause of homelessness among families in the United States. With 22 years’ experience in housing services, including 7 years of housing grant administration, I believe myself prepared and qualified for the task of program administration to tackle this need in our community. I understand that there may be federal grants available in this area. However, my experience has shown me that many times grants have so many regulations tied to them that they prevent you from helping the very clients who are in need. I believe private donations will enable me to serve more families with less red tape. If I should encounter a client who needs airfare to a safe place to escape an abuser, I want to be able to assist that person without a regulation that tells me I can’t. If I can provide assistance to one, that may be one life saved. Secondly, I believe that to invoke real and lasting change, people must be made aware and our youth must be educated. We can no longer wait for someone else to change the quality of life in our communities. And we certainly cannot wait until our young women are in violent relationships to teach them a different way. My plan is to develop a training manual for youth that includes topics of selfesteem, self-love, and self-worth, which are truly separate concerns. The manual will also cover issues such as conflict resolution and anger management. I would like to see these trainings made available at the age of 8 years. The earlier we can begin, the more positive an impact on the issues of intimate partner violence. A plan to foster a partnership with youth agencies such as Salvation Army Boys and Girls Clubs, Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of America, Jefferson County Public Schools, branches of the YMCA, and local libraries is currently under development. Churches may also want to participate in trainings with their youth groups.

Empowered Living Institute is a faith-based organization created to provide information and inspiration to others. Funds collected would be used for the activities discussed above as well as for additional fund- raising activities. It is imperative that this issue of violence be attacked on a large scale. I know there are other causes to give your support to, however I don’t think people look at how big this problem is. Every metro area across the United States is experiencing a major increase in shootings and shooting deaths. I guarantee a high percentage of these assailants came from broken homes or homes where violence was a way of life. There has been no one to teach them that, “human life is precious, it is of excellent value.” Values are taught. Self-worth, self-love is taught. Families are failing their children.

My dream is to make a difference. I wasn’t taught the values I needed to protect myself from abusers and sexual predators. I believe the statistic is one in four women has been a victim of domestic violence. In my family, it was three in five sisters with violent husbands. But I am happy to say we all survived. Now I need to help someone else survive. The need is great and ever-present. This fund will be on-going and program development has already begun. I will work with the Center for Women & Families, Salvation Army, and Volunteers of America to determine if any clients need relocation benefits that the agency cannot provide. These needs are the most difficult to meet in our community. I already have a plan in the works to expand the program to other areas. Broken homes need to be restored and broken lives deserve a new start.

Many times, I use legal analogies to express my thoughts because, as a lawyer, that's how I'm required to think every day as I explain difficult legal principles to my clients. I also like relating those legal principles to the Word of God because God's word has an answer to EVERY question we confront in life. There is nothing "new" under the sun. Here are my thoughts for today: When there is a jury trial, the judge is the finder of law and the jury is the finder of fact. That means that the lawyers will submit law to the judge so that the judge can decide which laws are appropriate to use as he instructs the jury regarding the law that is to be applied to a case. The lawyers (under the legal parameters set by the judge) will then submit witnesses and evidence and arguments to the jury so that they can decide what facts are true and then apply the law they've been given by the judge to the facts that they find. That's how they arrive at a verdict. However, if a case is appealed and the Supreme Court finds that the judge did anything that resembles "fact finding" in a jury trial, the Higher Court will reverse and remand the case back to the lower court and make them do the trial again because the judge "invaded the province of the jury"! Similarly, in the Word of God, there are so many places and times where we are instructed to "sit down somewhere" and let God handle the situation. However, we refuse to follow these instructions. We invade God's province and then wonder why our decisions are reversed and remanded by God and why we must start all over again. You can't pick and choose which portions of your life that you will give to God because He has dominion and power over EVERYTHING!! It is a PRIVILEGE to carry everything to God in prayer!! Exercise your privileges as a child of the King and be blessed!! One of my favorite old hymns says, "Oh! What peace we often forfeit. Oh! What needless pain we bear! All because we do not carry...everything to God in prayer. Here are some examples: You're tired of being single so you say, "Ok, Lord! I'm looking for a husband! So, you handle my kids and my finances but I'll take care of my love life!" And then you wonder why none of your relationships are working out. I'll tell you why! God says, "Reversed and remanded! My Word says that when a MAN findeth a wife, he finds a good thing. The man is supposed to find you when he's ready to be a husband. You're not supposed to find him and MAKE him ready to be a husband. Go sit down somewhere!" You're a married man with 3 kids and you say, "Lord! My wife is against it but I'm trying to impress my girlfriend and she wants a man with a motorcycle! You take care of my wife and kids while I go and roll out on this crotch rocket!" While you're laying in the hospital recovering from your motorcycle accident injuries, God says, "Reversed and remanded. I told you to love your wife the way the Christ loves the church and gave himself for her! Go sit down somewhere!" You're a college student and you say, "Lord, I trust you to take care of my health and my education but my parents just don't understand my need to party with my friends. What they don't know won't hurt them!" While you're on the side of the road in handcuffs after being arrested for DUI, God says, "Reversed and remanded. I told you to honor your father and your mother. They've already been where you're trying to go and their rules are meant to protect you just like My rules protect them. Go sit down somewhere!" What's my point? I'm glad you asked!! The Word of God tells us to seek the kingdom of heaven first and ALL OTHER THINGS will be added unto you! We try to do so many things in our own wisdom, our own power and our own time when God is telling us, "Do what I told you to do and submit yourself to me! Be my hands, my feet and my voice so that your walk with Me will be a witness to others. Let My glory shine through you so that the lost can be found and learn to trust me the way you do! Delight yourself in Me and I will give you the desires of your heart. Go sit down somewhere!" Until we learn to follow His will and His way, our decisions will continue to be reversed and remanded! Stop putting yourself in a position to have to start all over again. Wait on the Lord and He will direct your path! Wait, I say, on the Lord!!

Lights…Camera…Action!

I have always been a writer at heart but just didn't know it. One thing I did know for sure is that I was not cut out for a 9-5 job. I have always had this yearning to be my own boss. Living on my own terms and doing things my way has never been a secret. When you set out to be an entrepreneur you are opening yourself up for rejection, ridicule, and possible let down.

My earliest memory of writing started when I was in middle school. I remember writing a poem and all of my teachers were so impressed that it got published in the school paper. I really didn't understand what all the fuss was about. I only wrote the poem because a boy that I had a crush on liked another girl. From that point on my writing usually stimulated from anger, sadness, or some type of disappointment. This was the only way I knew how to express myself without getting into a lot of trouble.

As I got older I found myself constantly writing something. I would write everything from resumes to legal documents and even song lyrics. At one point I wondered exactly why I had to be cursed with such a gift. I had no idea why I would write things down or what they meant. It wasn't until about 3 years ago that it came to me to write a book. There were so many things that I could write about and the only thing that made sense at the time was to write about my church experiences thus birthing my first book - “Well I’ll Be Churched”

My first book came from so much dissatisfaction, disappointment, and disdain. Even with all the craziness going on in my life I was glad that I took the steps necessary to obtain one of my greatest achievements so far. I doubted myself, beat myself up, and even almost talked myself out of writing a book. Every fear that could be conjured up I internalized it. I remember finishing the last chapter in my book as if it were yesterday and in that moment I cried. It was 3am in the morning and instead of sleeping I was crying like a baby.

I wasn't sad but more so overwhelmed by the emotional effect finishing a book had on me. The book took me down memory lane and I wasn't prepared for it, so I thought. The same emotional trip was no different for my second book - “Is My Living In Vain?” I was so wrapped up with what if’s and what not’s. I am sure that the same will go for my third book that is in preparation.

I said all of that to say had I never written my first book then I defiantly would have never known this feeling of accomplishment. I don't allow myself to get caught up on numbers or popularity. My goal was to write and my end goal is so much greater than what is in front of me now. I now have a writing service “Eye Write It 4 U”

The whole point of this writing service is to help people get started on their first book or with any writing project that they may have. I also offer 30 minute consultations as a courtesy. I enjoy what I do and I haven't even touched the surface yet.

If you are thinking of starting a new venture or want to take that leap of faith then the best advice I have for you is to just do it. Start somewhere and the other things will fall into place but the key is to start. Stop thinking and dreaming…just do something other than standing still. I encourage you to do your research on whatever it is that you want to do. Be sure to get a mentor as well. It is always wise to seek the counsel of someone who is doing what you want to do with results. Stay on your grind…meaning don't quit just because someone rejected your idea or thought. Patience is always a virtue and don't be so quick to give up because things may not be happening as fast as you planned. Get ready for your big moment because your hard work will not let you down.

That fire you have inside of you will never be okay with your 9-5 job. That desire and dream will not fade nor let you be comfortable until the thirst is quenched. The worse case scenario is that you can say, “I tried and it didn't turn out like I had hoped!” or “I didn't try so I don't know if it would have worked!” Which person will you be?

Opportunities just don't come knocking at your door everyday. The road will be hard, tough, and you can count on sleepless nights but it will all be so worth it. Let the fun begin and here comes your spotlight. Entrepreneurship is a lot like getting ready for your film debut. You have a script that must be learned so practice your lines. Then there are rehearsals and screenings that you must be present for. Once you have put in the work you now get to see yourself on the big screen. All of your efforts have paid off. Guess what? You get to do it all over again and again to achieve that same success.

In the famous words of Marilyn Monroe - “I am ready for my close up Mr. Deville.”

You can do it…so lets go…are you ready? LIGHTS…CAMERA…ACTION!

Stay energized with protein-rich on-the-go snacks It can be hard to eat healthy when you're on the go. Avoid fast-food places that tend to be heavy on the junk food and prepare a variety of nutritious snacks before you hit the road. "Choose foods that are high in protein and other nutrients like vitamin B12, which are essential for maintaining energy throughout the day," says Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist Dawn Jackson Blatner. "Raw nuts, nut butters, fresh fruit and even eggs are easy to prep and won't make a mess while traveling." Blatner recommends baking up a batch of egg muffins and freezing them until your next outing. "Not all eggs are created equal though," says Blatner. "With six times more vitamin D, more than double the omega-3s and vitamin B12 than ordinary eggs, Eggland's Best eggs are the only eggs I recommend to my clients and serve to my family since they are loaded with superior nutrients that can help you refuel after a long day of traveling or sightseeing."

3 STEPS TO BECOMING A SAVVIER ONLINE SHOPPER By: BPT

Every day, people use data to influence their decision making - from where to go for dinner, to selecting stocks in which they should invest, to where to live. Every Google search we perform, every Yelp review read or written, each item of clothing, houseware or electronic device we put in our virtual cart, is another data point companies can use to personalize our experience with their brands. Despite all the data at their disposal, it seems many brands still don't fully understand what consumers want from them in terms of products or services or how to best engage with their end buyer. A recent survey from cloud and big data integration company Talend shows 88 percent of information technology leaders believe their organization truly understands its customers, while only 61 percent of consumers believe companies understand their needs.

is a hydrated pet Contributed By : BPT

It's a warm summer day - the sun is shining, the sky is blue and the scent of blooming flowers fills the air. As a pet owner, you're probably planning to take your dog on a walk, maybe even several. Meanwhile, your cat has found that sunny space underneath the windowsill. Sound familiar? If so, then you already know how much cats and dogs enjoy basking in the sun, but just like people, overexposure to heat can cause our furry friends to become varied versions of themselves. And too often signs of dehydration, which frequently appear in the form of lethargy, dry mouth and loss of appetite, are confused with run-of-the-mill exhaustion. Considering all the things we do know about our pets, it's hard to believe that we wouldn't recognize the symptoms that accompany something as serious as dehydration. But the truth is that unless you know which indicators to look for, it can be easy to misdiagnose. That's why the experts at PetSafe have compiled a list of tips and tricks for making sure your pet is experiencing healthy hydration all year long. Keeping them hydrated Water is without a doubt the single most important resource you can provide your animal, especially during hot summer months. Whether outside or inside, dogs and cats should consume around one ounce of water per pound each day. In other words, if you have a 20-pound terrier or a 20-pound tomcat, they should have access to at least 20 ounces of cool, clean drinking water every day. It's also important to remember that liquid can evaporate quickly in high temperatures, so if your pet's water source is outside it's best to check on the amount of available water several times throughout the day or consider purchasing an auto-fill watering bowl like the Drinkwell(R) Everflow Indoor/Outdoor Fountain by PetSafe.

THow do I detect dehydration in my pet? The observable signs of dehydration will frequently include one of more of the following symptoms: · Lack of skin elasticity. You can test this by gently pinching or pulling some of their skin. If it doesn't return to a normal position, your pet is likely dehydrated. · Drop in energy levels · Dry, sticky gums or foam around the mouth · Heavier than average panting · Loss of appetite · Sunken, dry eyes · Vomiting Treatment and prevention If your dog or cat exhibits any of these behaviors or symptoms, it's important to seek veterinary attention where they will likely monitor the body temperature of your pet. To prevent dehydration, pet parents should consider taking active measures to encourage pets to drink more water. Products like PetSafe Brand Pet Fountains are designed to continually circulate and filter water. This not only provides dogs and cats with a steady source of fresh water, but relieves owners of the constant hassle of refilling the bowl. Plus, the sound of flowing water tends to trigger an animal's desire to drink more. With proper care and precaution, your pet can enjoy every season - even summer - while staying happy, healthy and hydrated. Visit PetSafe.com to find more great tips, products and articles on pet care.

FAMILY FUN: 5 TIPS FOR GOING OFF-ROADING Summer's here and it's the perfect time for the family to hit the road ... off-road, that is. From Connecticut to California, there are scenic off-road trails of all varieties - rock, sand, dirt, water and mud - that are ideal for a family off-road excursion. Call it an off-thebeaten-path vacation. "Leave the electronics at home, grab some supplies, engage the 4x4 system, and see where the adventure takes you. Off-roading is not only an extremely enjoyable way to appreciate the great outdoors, it offers a chance to strengthen family bonds and make memories that will last a lifetime," says Christian Hazel, editor of Petersen's 4-Wheel and Off-Road. Depending on the terrain, you can go off-roading in your daily driver - almost any fourwheel-drive or all-wheel-drive SUV, crossover or light truck can handle it. You'll be out in the wilderness for several hours, so some basic tips include: * Bring plenty of food and water. * Pack extra clothes in case temperatures drop as the sun goes down. * Take along a flashlight (with new batteries) and a basic safety kit with bandages, sunscreen, gloves, etc. * Research the area/trails where you'll be off-roading. You'll most likely be out of cell phone/GPS range, so it's always good to know where you'll be driving and what the roads will be like. * Make sure your vehicle is in tip-top shape, especially the tires.

FROM FARM TO FAMILY: 7 THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE LIVING WITH LIVESTOCK

.Animals play a meaningful role in the lives of their owners. In fact, most people consider their furry friends part of the family. And while dogs and cats tend to be the most common companions, nowadays, the beloved family pet can come in many different shapes, sizes and species. Families across the country are opening their hearts and homesteads to various types of livestock, proving once and for all that not all pets have paws. Leanne Lauricella, founder of the popular rescue organization Goats of Anarchy and a consultant for Tractor Supply Company, has experienced this firsthand. Lauricella cares for more than 40 special needs, orphaned and disabled goats, as well as two pigs, and while she loves her hoofed herd, she says families should be aware of the unique challenges that come with raising such a pet. "It's common for people to see a cute baby pig or goat and think, 'I want one!'" says Lauricella. "These animals are adorable and make for great companions, but they do require a special type of commitment from their owners and it's important for people to understand the responsibilities before deciding to adopt." To help determine if livestock adoption is right for you, and to provide some tips for families who are getting started, Lauricella and Tractor Supply give us a glimpse of what life with livestock really looks like.

They get big It may sound obvious, but many would-be adopters forget that the once small, adorable baby animal they adopted will one day grow into a full-fledged adult. A pot-bellied pig, for example, may start out nice and little, but it will hardly be considered a lap animal when it reaches a whopping 100-250 pounds. They like having friends The majority of farm animals thrive in a herd or flock, and having companions is extremely beneficial to their long-term health and happiness. Before you get started, make sure you have the time and resources to care for multiple animals. Adjusting your lifestyle It's important to note that your new animal isn't going to adjust to your lifestyle. With farm animals, Lauricella says, it's the other way around. Livestock animals generally rise with the sun, and when they do, you will too. And remember, there's no snooze button on a hungry goat. A space to fit their needs Livestock animals need space to roam, but don't underestimate the importance of also keeping them properly contained. While the size and strength of a fence will vary depending on the animals you plan to adopt (you can research containment options for specific animals at TractorSupply.com), quality fencing should always be a high priority. The last thing you want is for your animals to outsmart their fence and roam into a nearby farm, field or neighborhood.

Caring for them when they're ill All animals are susceptible to illness, but livestock animals have a higher risk of contracting infections than their indoor counterparts. Veterinarians can help determine the right medical plan for your animal, but it's vital for new livestock owners to identify a livestock veterinarian before their animal gets sick.

Be sure it's legal Livestock laws differ from place to place, so if you have plans to bring home a new pig or goat, it's a good idea to check your city ordinances and homeowners association to be sure your new pet is allowed by local rules. Know where to go for supplies From feeders, food and treats to containment and healthcare, adopting livestock means shopping for a whole new set of supplies, and it's important to know where to go. Tractor Supply Company, the nation's largest rural lifestyle retailer, offers a comprehensive selection of products for equine, livestock, pets and small animals, including items necessary for their health, care, growth and containment. For more tips on getting started with a variety of animals, visit Tractor Supply's Know How Central online or visit a store during June's Purina Days, Tractor Supply's nationwide celebration of the partnership between families and the animals they raise.

The ABCs of back-to-school budgetingÂŽ Written By: BPT

It's natural to pack all you can into those few precious summer months, but inevitably they're gone before you know it. As summer vacations, sleepovers and outdoor grilling come to a close, it's time to start thinking about going back to school. You may be working to pay off summer vacation bills when you realize you need to budget and pay for your child's school supplies, clothing and other related school expenses. In a recent survey conducted by Coinstar, about half of U.S. parents with kids between ages five and 18 believe school expenses are increasing. Of those surveyed, 57 percent will create a backto-school budget. To ease rising school costs, here are five budgeting tips that will help you get more for your backto-school dollar: Create a budget. One of the best ways to spend wisely is to create a budget. If you don't already have one, open a new spreadsheet on your computer or get out a pen and paper. Consider all the potential back-to-school expenses and not just the obvious ones, such as school supplies and clothing. For example, you'll want to factor in extracurricular or after-school activities, tutoring, special school trips and even lunch costs.Collaborate with other parents. Consider joining parent groups, either through your school or community. These groups can offer a great support network to share ideas and information. They also serve as a fantastic resource for meeting parents who have items such as sports equipment their kids have outgrown or even musical instruments their children no longer play. This can lead to some serious money-saving deals.Tap your coin jar. With rising school costs, the old saying that every penny counts really is true. You can literally put this into practice by collecting all the loose change around your house or tucked away in your coin jar and bringing it to a Coinstar kiosk. At the kiosk, you can turn your coins into cash by paying a small fee or put your change toward a no-fee eGift card to use at retailers such as Amazon.com or Old Navy.Make a shopping list. Most schools provide a back-to-school list to help you plan and shop for your child. Use this as a starting point to make your own list and then stick to it! Retailers are set up to encourage impulse buys, but checking to see if something is or is not on your list is one of the most effective ways to avoid purchasing non-essential items and blowing your budget.Embrace the three Rs. Your kids will probably learn about the three Rs in school: reduce, reuse, recycle. This is a great principle to keep in mind when getting them ready for school, especially for back-to-school clothes. Choosing quality basics such as a jacket, skirt, sweater or jeans that can be combined with other clothing in your child's closet will reduce the need for quantity purchases. In addition, consignment stores and online retailers are very popular and offer gently used items that check the "reuse" box. And finally, don't forget to take advantage of handme-downs, whether from older siblings or friends.Going back to school should be an exciting time for you and your kids. With these five budgeting tips, you can help cut the financial stress out of the process and kick the school year off to a great start.

SIMPLE UPGRADES AND HABIT CHANGES CAN YIELD BIG WATER B T RO TH SAVINGS IN BA BATHROOMS Researchers predict that rising water prices could mean within five years a third of American households will not be able to pay their water bills, despite the replenishment of water reserves around the country. What's more, the National Weather Service warns that drought could increase or reoccur if the country experiences a period of sustained heat and dryness. Fortunately, there are many ways for you to reduce the amount of water your home uses each year. One of the best places to start conserving water is in the bathroom, where toilet flushing, long showers and deep soak baths account for the largest portion of a home's water consumption, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

B bBPT By BPT

Here are simple ways you can significantly reduce your home's water consumption, lower your water bill and do something good for the environment: Ditch water-guzzling fixtures Flushing the toilet accounts for about 30 percent of a home's annual water consumption, making it the largest user of water in the home, according to the U.S. EPA. Prior to 1994, most toilets used 3.5 or more gallons of water per flush (gpf). Current federal guidelines require that toilets use no more than 1.6 gpf, but you can do even better. * Toilets: Replace dated, older toilets with ultra-high-efficiency models like the American Standard H2Optimum ultra-high efficiency toilet, which uses an average of 1.1 gpf - that's 31 percent less than federal mandates. Exclusive PowerWash siphon-jet bowl cleaning technology drives this water-saving toilet to remove every trace of paper and waste, while its EverClean antimicrobial finish helps it stay cleaner, longer. * Faucets: Inefficient and leaky bathroom faucets also waste thousands of gallons of water each year. WaterSense-labeled faucets use a maximum of 1.5 gallons per minute (gpm) and as little as 1.2 gpm, decreasing water use by 30 percent or more. The Fluent collection of high-efficiency bathroom faucets uses leading-edge technology to reduce water consumption, while producing a strong flow rate, all with high-style design to coordinate with various bathroom decors. * Showerheads: A significant source of water usage in a home can be attributed to showerheads, pouring up to 40 gallons per day down the drain for an average family, according to the EPA. Since showers account for 17 percent of a home's water use, replacing an older, less efficient showerhead with a WaterSensecertified one can curb waste in the shower. An example is the Hydrofocus 6function showerhead that uses only 2 gallons of water per minute, while delivering a concentrated and invigorating spray. Its innovative pressurecompensating operation features a plentiful water flow across all spray patterns for a customized showering experience that caters to your family's personal preferences.

Make easy habit changes Replacing inefficient fixtures is an investment that will pay off over time. However, there are simple habit changes that are free and will produce results right away. Your family can easily reduce water use in the bathroom by: * Turning off the water when brushing their teeth. Running the tap while brushing can waste as much as 3,000 gallons per year, the EPA says. * Taking showers instead of baths. It takes an average of 36 gallons to fill the bathtub. Plus, if you take baths less often, when you do indulge in one it will feel like a treat. * Taking shorter showers. The longer the shower runs, the more water goes down the drain. Never turn on the shower and walk away to do other things while the water warms. If you get delayed or distracted, the water could run for a long time before you actually step into the shower. * Washing hands in cold water with soap, rather than letting the water run until it gets hot. * Shaving at the sink, rather than in the shower. Shaving in the shower extends your shower time, unnecessarily consuming more water. Just don't forget to turn off the water while shaving at the bathroom sink. Taking steps to reduce bathroom water usage can help save you money in the short term and benefit the environment in the long run. These changes are simple to implement, with rewarding results to both your wallet and our planet Earth.

Saving water in the bathroom is as simple as turning off the faucet while brushing your teeth or shaving. Changing out the sink faucet for a highperformance model using only 1.2 gallons of water per minute is another, with long-term benefits that save energy and money.

Water efficiency in the bathroom is highlighted with the American Standard Fluent collection that includes a 1.5 gallons per minute (gpm) sink faucet flow rate, and 2.0 gpm for the showerhead. This suite is complemented with a highefficiency CadetPRO toilet that uses only 1.28 gallons of water per flush.

THE 411 ON HVAC ENERGY-EFFICIENCY RATINGS AND TERMS By: BPT

Whether you're looking to lower heating and cooling costs, or have a passion for protecting the environment, maximizing the energy efficiency of your heating, ventilation and air conditioning system is a smart move. The more energy efficient your system, the less you'll spend running it every year, and the smaller your home's environmental footprint will be. Efficiency ratings are intended to help you decide which products are best for your home, so it's important to understand what all the related terms mean. HVAC systems manufacturer Luxaire, which has received ENERGY STAR's highest rating for two components, offers some guidance on interpreting energy-efficiency ratings and terms. ENERGY STAR Launched in 1992 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the ENERGY STAR program is a voluntary labeling system designed to help consumers identify energy-efficient products. ENERGY STAR rates products in more than 70 categories. Over the past 20 years, ENERGY STAR-rated products have helped consumers save $362 billion on energy bills and reduced greenhouse gas emissions by more than 2.4 billion metric tons. "Products that earn the ENERGY STAR rating are proven to operate using less energy. For example, in order to earn the highest rating, the ENERGY STAR Most Efficient designation, Luxaire's Acclimate AC8B Split System Air Conditioner and Echelon HC8B Split System Heat Pump demonstrated performance levels of up to 20 Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) and 12.5 Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) for cooling and heating performance, and 10 Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) for heat pumps," says Ken Ely, product manager, Luxaire heating and cooling. EnergyGuide label Federal regulations require heating and cooling equipment to carry an EnergyGuide label that provides an estimate of how much energy the equipment will use. The label also compares the unit's energy use to that of similar products, and gives an estimate of how much it will cost to operate the equipment in a year. In addition to energy efficiency labeling, it's important to know some measurement terms. Generally, for all these terms, a higher number equates to better efficiency. SEER SEER measures the energy efficiency of air conditioning systems and heat pumps. The ratio measures the amount of cooling provided by an air conditioner in comparison to the amount of energy the system uses - measured in watts per hour - over a hypothetical season. SEER can give you an idea of how energy efficient a unit will be under average conditions. However, a number of factors, such as how you use and maintain a unit, can influence energy efficiency, so it's important to realize a unit might perform differently in your home.

EER EER is very similar to SEER, except instead of measuring efficiency over a season, EER tells you how efficient an air conditioning unit might be when operating at a typical temperature. HSPF HSPF is meant to help you understand a heat pump's energy efficiency over a season. It's typically referenced alongside SEER to give a better picture of a system's probable energy efficiency. The HSPF formula uses BTUs (British Thermal Units, a measurement of heat) to estimate the useful heat output divided by the total electricity (in watts per hour) the heat pump uses during a heating season. AFUE One more energy measurement to know is the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency rating. The AFUE measures average efficiency for furnaces, boilers and water heaters. Like SEER and EER, the measurement is for a theoretical heating season. To learn more about energy-efficient heating and cooling systems, visit www.luxaire.com/greensavings and follow @LuxaireHVAC on Twitter. b5 ESSENTIAL SOFT SKILLS FOR A JOB INTERVIEW

Picture this: After months of networking and polishing your resume, you managed to make the necessary connections, get in front of the right people and land an interview. You deserve to be here. After all, you have an impressive background, great experience, fantastic references and are confident you can exceed the requirements of the job. The interview is really just a formality. For many, the hardest part of the job hunt is simply getting an interview. However, many top candidates get passed over and are surprised when they are not offered a job. The reason for this is they often spend a lot of time practicing how to answer questions and explaining their qualifications, but forget about the soft skills. A successful interview is about making the right impression, and these five soft skills are essential to making the impression that leads to a job offer.

Cont.

1. A memorable appearance. We all know you need to dress your best before going into an interview, but you should go the extra mile to ensure the person you meet with remembers you. In addition to looking clean, tidy and professional, dress in a way that makes you feel confident and will make others notice. 2. Be ready to floss on the go. If someone notices something in your teeth, a piece of spinach or fleck of cereal, they won't be able to see anything else. Before any interview, be sure to have a pack of Plackers Flossers with you. Made with strong floss that can quickly remove any gunk stuck in your teeth, these convenient one-handed flossers also double as a toothpick. Don't leave home without them! 3. Exude confidence. Beyond just making you look good, the big reason behind dressing well and double checking that your teeth are clean and free of gunk is because this will give you confidence. Hiring managers can tell the difference between someone who is confident and someone who is not. Needless to say, they're more impressed by confidence! So even if you're nervous, dress up, keep clean, give a firm handshake and-if you have to-fake it until you make it! 4. Keep it positive. How you answer questions is often just as important as the answers you give. Always frame what you say in a positive note. In describing difficult managers or poor work conditions at other companies, frame it as a challenge you were happy to take on, an opportunity to learn and grow. Most importantly, remember to smile! 5. Eat well. You might be nervous and lose your appetite, but be sure you eat well the night before and the morning of the interview. Whole grains and foods loaded with fatty acids, such as salmon, eggs and kale, can help you feel great and relaxed for the interview. Just remember to have a few Plackers Flossers on hand so that energizing meal doesn't become an unsightly mess in your mouth!

7 TIPS FOR BALANCING RETIREMENT SAVINGS AND PAYING FOR COLLEGE

CONTRIBUTED BY BPT

Most people want to help their children pay for a quality college education, but it can be difficult to balance personal financial goals and funding your kids' educational aspirations. When retirement savings is sacrificed for college costs, it can be a disservice to the entire family. To help guide you in determining the best way to pay for your kids' college while still funding your retirement savings, personal finance expert and host of the So Money podcast Farnoosh Torabi offers seven smart tips. Tip 1: Don't put retirement on the back burner. While funding your children's college education is important, your retirement savings should take priority. Strive to contribute 10 to 15 percent of your take-home pay toward retirement savings. The reality is college is four years and retirement can be 30+ years. Plus, there's no scholarship for retirement like there is for college! Tip 2: Take the free money. If your workplace retirement plan comes with a match, take it. Contribute the minimum to receive your employer match. At the end of the day, it's free money and that's the best kind. Tip 3: Involve your children in the college cost discussion. College is expensive, so make sure you're discussing with your kids overall costs and what you're willing to contribute. Have them help research financial aid and scholarship opportunities, too. Remember, you want to find a school that's the best fit - so don't let the initial "sticker price" scare your children from applying. Some private colleges may give the best aid packages, but other times they may not. Don't make assumptions and always keep your options open. The goal is to find the college with the best value.

Tip 4: Don't take on more than you can afford. While involving your children in the discussion, it's also important to make sure you're not setting them up for failure when they graduate. As they research student loan possibilities, make sure they'll be able to comfortably afford payments once they graduate, and that they're not taking on too much debt. An easy way to start researching together is to visit College Ave Student Loans and use the configure-it-out tool. Answer a short series of questions regarding how much you'll borrow, how many years of schooling are left, whether you want to make payments during school or not, etc. This shows your child what repayment will look like under each option so you can both be clear on the details and agree on a game plan. Tip 5: Consider the college savings plan that's best for you. Consider opening a 529 that allows flexible spending toward higher education. Should your child choose to forgo traditional college education or not require the funds set aside, you can easily change the beneficiary to another child or relative. If you're skeptical of a 529, consider a Roth IRA if your income limits allow. Although typically used for retirement, the Roth IRA has an exception where you can withdraw your contributions from the account at any time tax- and penalty-free for qualified education expenses. The remaining money can be collected in your retirement. Tip 6: Starting late? Play catch-up. If saving for retirement has not been a priority, it's time to get aggressive. Pare down costs where possible and take advantage of catch-up contributions. People who are 50 or older can contribute an extra $6,000 to their 401(k) or an extra $1,000 to an IRA this tax year. Tip 7: Don't become the "bank of Mom and Dad." You want to help your kids, but once you set the precedent that it's OK for your children to ask for money (or a contribution toward college), they may feel they can frequently approach you later in life for funds. Don't set the tone that you'll always be there to financially support them. You want them to grow wings so they can fly independently (and so you can happily enter retirement and enjoy those golden years). While you should talk with your child about potential majors and career paths, it's important also to add financial conversations into the mix. Smaller metros take action to draw millennials fleeing bigger urban areas Are millennials getting ready to leave big cities in droves? Some experts in demographics, economics and real estate have predicted the millennial exodus from huge urban areas has already begun. If true, the question remains: where will they go? Some may head to the suburbs, like their parents and grandparents did before them, but many will look for a different lifestyle, one that combines the advantages of suburban living with the best features of city life. Some smaller metro areas, like Wausau, Wisconsin, are banking they have the blend of economic opportunity, urban elements, affordability and lifestyle that will attract migrating millennials. The draw "Economy has always been a factor in generational migrations, and while the nature of work has changed, economic opportunity is still key to where people want to live," says Christian Schock, director of planning, community and economic development for the City of Wausau. "Everyone wants to find a place with the winning formula of urban activities, affordability and lifestyle. Businesses want to put down roots in that environment, too, knowing it will draw a bigger pool of skilled workers." In recent years, the City of Wausau has made concerted efforts to position itself with both big city amenities and small town assets. By many accounts, the efforts are paying off. In a 2016 Pew Research Trust analysis of income equality nationwide, Wausau ranked first in the nation, with the middle class constituting 67 percent of the city's total population. Wausau also ranked highest in Wisconsin and eighth nationally on Area Development magazine's list of hot spots for new and expanding businesses.

The formula Small to mid-size metro areas that want to attract millennials, as well as businesses and investors, need to address key areas, including: * Urbanity In addition to the recreational and entertainment amenities often highlighted when discussing millennials, many midsized metros lack the diversity of housing types that can be found in a larger city which millennials might be accustomed to. One strategy Wausau has focused on specifically is diversifying housing product. The City funded local architects to design an urban rowhouse - a housing style which did not previously exist. For over a decade, leaders proactively assembled parcels for new riverfront apartments, and continually worked with developers to seek tax credits which could be applied to renovating historic properties into unique multifamily offerings. * Affordability Rising real estate costs are among the factors that kept many millennials living in cities longer than they might have liked, experts say. Mid-sized metros have an edge in making home buying more affordable for millennials - and homebuyers of all generations. Recognized as a leader in economic development homesteading, Wausau's Live It Up program is a partnership between local employers and the city to provide employees with a no-interest down payment assistance loan for the purchase of a home. In the last two years, the program has allocated more than $200,000 in no-interest loans to local employees. * Place Millennials who came of age in urban environments have a strong affinity for multifunctional spaces, and are drawn to communities that are a walkable mix of business, retail, industry and residential. While the specific physical space needs may change, their own strong sense of identity makes them inclined to seek a region that has its own established sense of self. Wausau has leveraged more than $100 million in new downtown development over the past decade and currently has another $100 million under construction, emphasizing the city's identity as a vibrant, growing core. Wausau's Riverlife Village project is reclaiming more than 16 acres of urban waterfront along the Wisconsin River to house a new park, river wharf, mixed-use office space, biking paths, apartments and a family entertainment center. Perhaps the greatest testament to a mid-sized metro's success is the recommitment of historic businesses to local growth. Wausau Insurance was an early innovator in workers' compensation insurance, which evolved out of the necessity for local lumber mills to share the risk of worker rehabilitation. Now part of Liberty Mutual, the company recently announced a $50 million regional facility expansion. Wausau Window and Wall Systems and Linetec, both in the building materials industry, also trace their roots to the lumber industry, and have completed over $60 million worth of expansion and doubled the size of their workforce within the past five years, providing a strong foundation for continued economic development. "Any resident, millennial or not, is looking for ways to connect with their community. Both businesses and residents are discovering that smaller cities can even be more responsive and creative than larger metros," says Robert Mielke, mayor of Wausau.
