Introduction to OLIVERS Welcome to our Spring edition of the OLIVERS 2022 magazine, a publication to keep you informed of the latest offerings from OLIVERS. This Spring edition of the OLIVERS 2022 magazine has been distributed to our customer base across the Home Counties and the South of England.

the current unsettled climate in Europe and rising inflation as energy and raw material costs continue to increase, will increase the price of all machinery. There is never a better time to lock into current prices whilst they last.

At long last we can see the light at the end of the COVID tunnel. For over two years OLIVERS have been unable to deliver events to our customers, but we are delighted to say that we will be holding our open days at our Petworth and Luton branches. Whilst it’s been very disappointing that we have been unable to host our Open Days and Grain Clinics for the past two years, it was fantastic to see so many customers making use of our Martin Lishman ‘Drop and Run’ Grain Clinic and we thank you for your loyalty. Today we are delighted that we can finally hold the Grain Clinics in person and it will be very important to us to catch up with our customers and support the local agricultural community wherever possible. We have planned a busy events diary for 2022 and hope to see as many of our customers as we can over the next few months. In the chaos of the global COVID-19 pandemic, there has been disruption to manufacturing across all sectors. As a business, we have tried to mitigate supply issues by planning ahead and have placed an unprecedented number of advance orders in order to maintain a pipeline of supply. Thankfully this situation has been acknowledged by many of our customers, who have prudently placed orders early to satisfy their seasonal needs. We are still in the post-Brexit trade period which continues with its challenges and, whilst we have got to grips with new import and export regulations, customs delays can still occur and we appreciate your continued forbearance should there be any delays in Parts supply. As a business in the agricultural industry, we have stayed open throughout the pandemic where others have had to close. Adaptions to daily operations have allowed us to continue to support our customers and keep feeding the nation over this critical period. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our customers for their patience and understanding through this time, as well as our hard working staff. Having successfully demonstrated the new CLAAS LEXION Hybrid and Straw Walker Combines and the new CLAAS TRION combine range, we have achieved a full order book for the 2022 harvest. We have also had high orders for our other franchise products including the new HORSCH LEEB Self-Propelled sprayer. We ask our customers to remain mindful that forward ordering is key to ensuring timely supply. What is quite clear is that with

OLIVERS are your local family-run business established in 1823. In 1947 we were appointedYEARS asPARTNERSHIP the first independent CLAAS dealership supplying combines.

YEARS PARTNERSHIP

For the past 75 years, we have had an extremely successful and strong working relationship with CLAAS UK, culminating in recent years with an expanded CLAAS sales territory for OLIVERS. With the addition of the Reading, Winchester and Petworth branches, we now cover an area from Oxfordshire across to Cambridgeshire, from Northants down to the south coast including the Isle of Wight working out of five branches. A CLAAS Senator Combine on display at the Royal Show 1964 as well as other brands at the time.

THE EARLY YEARS The history of the original A. T. Oliver & Sons business goes back to the 1800s when Archibald Thomas Oliver developed the family contract steam threshing business, set up by his father and grandfather in the early part of that century. In the 1920’s and 30’s Olivers also tendered Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire County Councils, Luton Corporation and the L.N.E.R. for steam roller contracting. All contracting was cut out after 1945 and A. T. Oliver & Son began supplying new farm machinery to local farmers in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire.

Following the acquisition of David Brown by Case and the dissolution of the brand in the early 1980s, OLIVERS moved on to supplying Case IH tractors. During the 1980’s OLIVERS were awarded an award for the Top UK Dealer by the CLAAS MANNS Masters Club. Awarded on the 19th January 1981 for the sale of the most CLAAS combines in the UK for the sales year 1979/80. Success continued for OLIVERS and CLAAS throughout much of the 1990’s, with the Dominator, Mega and Commandor line up with the introduction in 1996 of the Lexion range of products.

In November 1963, The Luton News printed a double page spread celebrating 110 years of A.T Oliver & Sons. The article recalls how the Oliver Family Business grew, providing 32 threshing machines and 13 steam rollers soon becoming the largest contractor in the country. At the end of the 19th century, it also describes how James Oliver patented and sold his invention of the ‘Chaff Bagger’ to Marshall & Sons of Gainsborough.

When CLAAS introduced a new tractor range to their product portfolio, we fully supported this move and OLIVERS now sell the full line of CLAAS tractors. In recent years, OLIVERS has taken on Samson Agro, Bunning Spreaders, Grange Machinery and Spearhead Machinery to further follow the future farming trends of customer requirements.

OUR FOCUS In 2008 the decision was made to split the A.T. Oliver & Sons business in to two new trading companies, to give better focus and dedicated service support. Oliver Agriculture Ltd was formed to look after the CLAAS, Horsch & associated franchises. At the same time our sister company Oliver Landpower Ltd was formed to look after the JCB & Groundcare to the North & West of London & National Buggy Hire division.

Q-SERIES & 1400-V Tanco manufacture a comprehensive range of innovative square & round bale wrapper’s in Ireland at their Bagenalstown, Co. Carlow based factory and distribute to over 40 countries worldwide. Tanco customer’s like the robustness of their Tanco machines and operator feedback was as much an influence in the development of many of the new unique features on the current range of Tanco bale wrapper’s as it was on features to retain within the machines. The Q-Series wrappers are Tanco’s linkage/loader mounted square & round bale wrapper’s which were introduced for the 2020 season, replacing the hugely popular 1540-EH. The Q-Series is available as either a 2 plastic or a 3 plastic dispenser machine. The 1400-V is Tanco’s high speed twin satellite trailed round bale wrapper which continues the 1400-series range from the

very robust and reliable 1400-EH that was manufactured from 2007 until the 1400-V was introduced in 2018. Both the Q-Series and the 1400-V can operate as fully automatic machines. They share with other wrapper’s manufactured by Tanco, such as the round bale A-100 trailed, A-200 static & linkage/loader operated S-Series wrapper’s, many features (auto-load, telescopic cutter’s & auto-unload) and component’s (sensor’s & hydraulics). Along with these innovative features there are some physical changes from the previous machines, For example. longer bale roller’s on the Q-Series, as well as features retained, i.e. the split table of the 1400. STUBBLE MANAGEMENT PRINCIPLES

It is now more than 10 years since Spearhead developed the first rotary mulcher the “Stubble Master” with a primary design brief to provide a more environmentally beneficial and cost-effective solution to dealing with crop stubble residue and cover crops.

Faster Decomposition The decomposition of crop stubble residue is accelerated when chopped stubble is mixed with dust and soil, encouraging micro-organisms to flourish. This process results in a more controlled release of nutrients from the decaying organic material which in turn reduces the transferal of fungus and disease.

Alongside introducing the Stubble Master Rotary Mulcher, Spearhead has worked closely with European farmers and internationally acclaimed universities to develop the “Stubble Management Principles” from which the benefits of stubble management can truly be explained. The utilisation of these stubble management principles can have a profound effect on all aspects of arable farming, including disease control, improving crop yields, through to a more efficient use of both the combine and tractor in terms of working time and running costs.

Activation of Waste Seeds Stubble Management is especially effective in rapeseed for the activation of waste seeds. The chopped stubble forms a productive carpet that retains the exact moisture that the spilled rapeseeds need to become active, thereby benefitting the development of crops the following season. Distribution of Stubble Residues As combines get bigger, it is often difficult to distribute the processed straw across the width of the header. Using the Stubble Master to run in a diagonal operation allows the leftover straw to be chopped and mulched for a second time.

STAR CUT BLADE SYSTEM

Pests and Diseases Stubble Management is proven to be successful in the management of pests including the "Death Watch Beetle" - one of the world’s most common crop destroying insects. By chopping across and flaring the lower stalk of the maize plant, the habitat of this beetle is destroyed.

Many of the benefits of the stubble management principles can be attributed to Spearhead’s specialist blade system – Star Cut. This exclusive blade system gives a precise pulverisation whilst needing only a very low power requirement from the tractor – thereby giving the ultimate in both efficiency and performance.

Management of Grass Seed Traditionally the Spearhead Rotary Mower has been used to manage grass seed fields and the Stubble Master is no exception. With the introduction of the Star Cut Blade system it is now possible to cut even closer to the ground with better mulch than ever before.

Featuring between three or five rotors (dependant on model), each with heavy duty blade holders and six robust 13-millimetre-thick spring steel blades per rotor – three high lift and three flat for extra mulching - the machine is capable of leaving a flail type finish to support a more efficient harvest operation and an improved yield. The blades cut the stubble at two different heights, one height to create the suction lift and the other cutting low to the ground to create an advantageous environment for mixing soil and cut residue together to encourage faster decomposition. This process allows micro-organisms to flourish which then results in a controlled release of nutrients back in to the soil, reducing the transferal of fungus and diseases and encouraging greater crop yields the following year.

Long Stubble After the Combine By raising the header of the combine by 10cm, the capacity of the machine is increased by 20%, which can be an advantage in years where an increased level of rainfall is experienced. Clean-Up of the Field Using the Stubble Master over the remaining crop residue will chop mulch and spread further. Working Hours and Diesel Use The patented knife system, Star Cut, is highly regarded for the pulverisation and distribution of the chopped material. With a forward speed of approximately 15km per hour, there is a huge capacity and major time saving during the harvest process. Diesel use is approximately 2.5 litres per hectare for a normal stubble management process.

Already running three OPICO mobile driers, the Grimsdale brothers knew the value of their mechanical simplicity and the ease with which they could be automated. Even the firm’s two ageing 12-tonners are kitted out with 25-tonne intake bins and left to their own devices to process three batch-loads under their own steam. Moving up in scale to the 29-tonne machine nine years ago proved that the principle had legs and so when a serious step up in capacity was required they knew a 48-tonner would do the job. Fully integrated, it now dries in excess of 6000 tonnes a year. What’s really changed the game is the reduction in fuel usage thanks to the integration of a biomass heat exchanger and tweaks to the generator electrical supply set-up. “From the outside it might not make immediate sense to run four batch driers at different sites when you’re farming over 2000ha,” explains Aidan. “But with six contract farming customers who want to see their sheds utilised at different locations, it often all needs to be dried at once. At any one time we can be processing four different crops on four different farms without any bottlenecks. “That’s only been possible by looking at how we can automate without over-complicating the job. The beauty of the OPICO driers is that their control set-ups make that possible without too much head-scratching.”

MAKING YOUR STRAW GO FURTHER WITH MINIMAL DUST Driving for increased efficiency - saving, time, labour and straw Beef finishers, Norman Drewe and his brother, John have added together the benefits of their new Spread-a-Bale Midi HD and they estimate it will have paid for itself within 12 months. They finish between 1,200 and 1,300 head of cattle a year on their Oxfordshire based unit requiring approximately 3,000 straw bales. The Drewes invested in their first Spread-a-Bale machine in 2009, and upgraded with the Midi HD in 2021. Norman lists the machine’s top six benefits. • It takes one person less than 60 minutes a day to bed up the sheds - that’s a massive labour saving. HORSCH HORSCH AVATAR 12.25 SD – NEW SERIES WITH NEW EQUIPMENT OPTIONS The seed wagon concept guarantees a maximum time frame for sowing. Due to the large tyre widths and the different types of tyres the pressure on the soil even in wet soil conditions is minimised and allows for working without damaging the soil. The double support wheels at the wings guarantee low tracks and an optimum adaption to the soil. With its 1-row design with SingleDisc coulters and a row spacing of 25 cm the Avatar 12.25 SD is ideal for mechanical population control, but also for the most different sowing methods, e.g. direct seed, mulch seed, into standing catch crops etc. The universal HORSCH Avatar 12.25 SD has been equipped with some new equipment options, e.g. a new control concept. The intuitive handling concept based on ISOBUS makes it easier for the farmer to adjust, operate and monitor his technology. Via the Touch Terminal the customer can adapt the terminal interface according to his likes and requirements. With the new hardware and software HORSCH creates a platform which can supply an almost unlimited number of components when metering.

Additional optional equipment like for example the LED headlight system WorkLight Pro allows for driving at night. This is particularly advantageous for large farms as the visibility of the seed coulters and the machine is optimum even in the dark.

Due to the well-proven folding concept the transport dimensions are very compact. With an outside width of 3 metres, it is also ideal for road transport. There are various tyre versions for driving in the field – from 520 tyres to 900 tyres and twin tyres. The newly developed seed hopper platform has a capacity of 6500 litres and can be ordered as a double hopper. The total capacity is distributed according to the ratio 60:40. To increase the range even more especially for rape seed, a MiniDrill G&F is available as an option. This additional hopper has a capacity of 400 litres and is often used for seed, e.g. rape or other fine seeds, as well for granulates or slug pellets. Thus, filling stops can be reduced and, if required, up to 3 components can be metered at the same time.

Similar to all HORSCH Avatar models, the HM skid as well as the newly developed HM Plus skid guarantee enormous stability and a special longevity of the seed coulter.

HORSCH LEEB CS MOUNTED SPRAYER The Leeb CS mounts to the tractor’s 3-point linkage to form a compact and manoeuvrable unit that is ideal for smaller fields. It features many large sprayer innovations including active boom control system, a unique feature in this class. Continuous cleaning system CCS Pro, the induction tank and the 25cm nozzle layout are available for the new Leeb CS.

In addition, the slight inclination of the disc guarantees that the capillaries are broken over the whole working width when working shallowly. This reduces traction and, in dry years, saves available water.

VERSA KR SEED DRILL The Versa KR mechanical seed drill features electrically driven metering on the countershaft. The SmartClip metering system is especially popular among machine contractors as it offers high flexibility with regard to tramlines. Due to the individual connection of the metering devices, they can be changed individually and without any tools. Different row spacings can be adjusted based on 12.5 and 15 cm and the metering can be adjusted with a stop valve between the spacing wheel and the cam wheel depending on the seed the customer uses.

Available with 1400, 1800 and 2200 litre tank capacities, the Leeb CS has an optimised centre of gravity for controlled and confident machine handling. An additional front tank will be available soon, further expanding the sprayer’s flexibility.

JOKER CT CULTIVATOR The strengths of the Joker CT are the intensive incorporation of harvest residues and germination stimulation of volunteer crops. High amounts of straw and catch crop populations require a machine with high clearance and this is where the Joker CT scores due to its design with 2 discs per coulter arm and proven reliability. The new Joker CT is equipped with the new disc holders with optimised disc angle that has already been successful in the Joker RT. This improves the quality of the cultivation and results in a very even surface.

The 900 litre seed hopper capacity of the basic machine can be extended in two steps to a total capacity of 1500 litres. The double disc coulter DuoDisc has specifically been designed for the Versa line and is equipped with well-proven components of the TurboDisc seed coulters and ensures an exact and even placement of the seed.

HORSCH Transformer VF hoeing tool The Transformer VF (VariableFrame) is the basis of the hoeing devices made by HORSCH. A highlight of the VF is the fully integrated side slide frame as well as the precise control via a camera system. It is highly configurable due to parallelogram-controlled tools. Available with working widths from 6m to 12m, the 9m and 12m versions make it is possible to work with a width of 6m and 8m respectively. The frame height of 660 mm allows for using the Transformer quite late in high crops.

In the case of OSR seeding, the rape seed can be metered with the MiniDrill and the two main hoppers can be used for fertiliser, increasing the seeding output of the Focus by 40%. If the MiniDrill is used as an addition to the PPF system, the seed outlets are in the seed bar area and can be used to apply slug pellets, for example.

CULTRO 5 TO 9 TC KNIFE ROLLER

The parallelogram design now allows different row spacings from 15cm to 80cm. The working width can be adjusted easily in steps without any tools. RowLift (SectionControl) ensures a constant work quality over the whole field and takes some workload off the driver to keep overlapping and gaps on the headlands are a reduced to a minimum. Additional tools like crop protection washers and crop protection plates protect the plants in the early growing stage.

The horsepower requirement of the double knife roller Cultro TC is very low, and the machine has a wide range of applications in combination with other machines. The knives produce an intensive crushing result, e.g.in rape and silage maize stubbles and catch crops. The Cultro TC is available in 3m, 5m, 6m, 9m and 12m working widths to meet customers’ requirements.

FOCUS 3 TD HORSCH has launched a 3m version of the proven Focus TD strip-till line to offer a solution for smaller operations to combine strip tillage and sowing. Following customer requests for a smaller machine, the 3m model has a steel hopper with 3500 litre capacity with a partition of 60:40. In addition, a MiniDrill with an additional 400 litre capacity is available. The MiniDrill offers a third component in the application process and increases the productivity of the machine.

The Cultro TC can be combined optimally with other machines, e.g. by means of a front attachment without packer with the disc harrow Joker CT. Another option is the rear attachment for the Cultro 5/6 and 9 CT. The Cultro 9 TC can even be combined with a 3-row harrow for an intensive distribution of harvest residues and for the production of fine earth.

With a broad range of crops and five farms spread over a 50 mile area, the men and machines at Sentry Cambridgeshire’s operation are kept pretty busy, especially at harvest. With over 800ha of combinable crops to clear, the business’ single combine has its work cut out, particularly in a tricky season like the summer of 2021.

To that end the firm leases its harvester on a five to seven year fully-serviced basis. Until this year a 2014 LEXION 750 with 9.3m VARIO header was tasked with the workload. Due for replacement this season, last autumn the Sentry team started looking at the best way to balance value for money with capacity.

“With a relatively short working window, we’re very focused on making the most out of our combine,” explains manager Ed King.

“We needed a machine that would comfortably clear our acreage without having to cut crops wet but that wasn’t going to break the bank.

“It ticked the box in a number of ways. The guts of the machine are pretty much the same as the LEXION – the APS threshing unit up front followed by a pair of rotors, all squeezed into a narrow-bodied chassis. “It also has the benefit of all the latest CEMOS Automatic technology to push output. But what really clinched the deal for us was that it could be fitted with a draper-type CONVIO FLEX header.” A demonstration in harvest 2020 had proved the belt-fed table had the potential to significantly increase the combine’s working day, and its ability to hug the ground meant it could clear laid crops while limiting the amount of soil going into the combine.

“Having run the TRION 750 in full auto all season I’m totally blown away by what it can do.”

Duly a deal was done for a TRION 750 with 9.3m CONVIO FLEX to replace the business’ seven year old LEXION 750. How has it performed? “The TRION is more than a match for our old combine, particularly when it comes to daily outputs. “It’ll comfortably clear 40ha a day whereas before that would have been quite a stretch. Ultimately it’s got the same threshing gear as the LEXION 750 so I’m convinced that the extra capacity is all down to two factors – the CONVIO header and CEMOS Automatic.

“The way the crop is fed lumpfree and always head-first into the throat of combine means it runs smoothly and more efficiently during the day. And when things start to get damp in the evenings it just keeps going – we never have to slow up. “That’s all made possible by the CEMOS computer constantly adjusting the combine settings to keep things running flat-out without any detriment to the sample.” Clean grain “What ends up in the tank of the TRION is absolutely awesome – I have never seen a combine produce a sample like it,” says Ed.

“We like to home-save seed but have no cleaning facilities of our own. I’m pretty confident that this year we’ll be able to dig grain straight out of the heap and tip it straight into the drill – it really is that good.” Why tracks? “We have a very wide range of soil types and a good chunk of ground that is below sea level so it’s critical we can travel in the wet. “The extended footprint of tracks means we can reliably cut crops when ground conditions are less than ideal without making a mess and damaging our most delicate soils.

And the combine’s overall width is kept narrow – a big bonus for roadwork.” Cab and controls “Someone at CLAAS HQ has put a lot of thought into the new cab. There’s more room all around you and heaps of storage. Visibility is so much better – you can sit right back in the seat and see the whole of the header,” says TRION operator Anthony Mottram. “The CEBIS touchscreen is easy to navigate and I like the way you’ve got a number of ways to access the different menus. I generally use the armrest switches – one click and you’re straight into the right page. That said, with CEMOS Automatic I’m rarely having to make many settings changes.”

“Having a 12,000-litre grain tank has made harvest logistics so much more efficient. We can now fill our 16t trailers to full capacity with two tank loads so they always go back to the store full and the combine isn’t left with anything on-board.

“CEMOS Automatic is without doubt the single biggest advantage that these latest CLAAS combines have over what’s gone before. The way it constantly tweaks settings to maintain the right balance between sample, losses and output means even the best operators wouldn’t be able to achieve the outputs that it can. “The combination of CEMOS and GPS steering means we’re getting full capacity out of the combine all of the time. And at the end of the day I’m definitely not getting off the machine as tired as I would have been. “It’s a good job too now that we’re generally cutting for an extra couple of hours each evening thanks to the improved crop feed from the CONVIO header.”

“Filling trailers to the max is made that much easier with the new pivoting spout and camera. It’s a much neater exit from the chute which means grain stays where it falls and, mounted in the left-hand corner of the windscreen, the display gives you a much better picture of how much room you’ve got left to fill.” Maintenance “The worst part of any combine driver’s day is blowing the machine off. Thanks to the design of the engine bay on the TRION it’s now so much easier to clean down and it stays so much cleaner than anything I’ve ever driven.”

work with us and make a sale,” says Josh. “Paul Green at OLIVERS couldn’t have been more accommodating and helpful, and was always quick to come back to me. Even though we had previously not dealt much with OLIVERS, I did know of them, and they have always had a good reputation in the area and been highly spoken of.

The two tractors – a 185hp ARION 650 CIS+ and a 145hp ARION 610 CIS – were both new in the last year year and are the latest Stage V models. Between them they handle a wide range of arable and grassland work at the stud near Radlett in Hertfordshire. The stud is the home base for a string of around 50 flat and national hunt racehorses when not in training, in addition to brood mares and youngstock that are either taken on for pre-training or for sale.

AN ENJOYABLE PLACE TO BE

The first of the tractors, the ARION 610 CIS, arrived at the end of last year after farm manager Josh Ord had looked at a number of different makes. Impressed with how the tractor performed and the support received from OLIVERS, the decision was then made this year to replace their other larger tractor for the ARION 650, even though it was not due to be replaced.

“I had the two tractors on demo and even though both were similar horsepower, the ARION just felt more substantial and much more able to handle our plough and other heavy kit. We hardly need any weights on it and have never felt unstable. Also the specification on the ARION was that much better. It’s even small things like the sound system, the seat, lighting, mirrors and the suspension which together make the ARION a very enjoyable place to be, especially over a 10-hour day. With the other tractor we would have had to work our way through the options list to get it anywhere near. With the ARION you feel you are getting a good tractor right from the start. They are just so well designed – even the small simple things are done well. They have obviously looked at it from a user’s point of view.
