Spring 2020

It’s all about the soil Can we create more soil? It is impossible to create more soil. The world population is expected to increase to 9.8 billion by 2045. The demand for food will multiply putting increased pressure on farmers to produce higher yields. Farms are increasing in size and the time windows for cultivation and harvesting are becoming even shorter. At the same time, machines are getting bigger, more powerful and, therefore, also heavier. Soil compaction is the result.

What are CLAAS doing to help farmers protect the soil? This is why our research and development teams have been addressing these challenges for over 30 years. Every day, our research engineers attach great importance to soil protection, starting with measures taken during the machine development process.

How did it st

Drawing on the company’s wide experience, gained over more than two decades of rubber track development with CLAAS LEXION combines, we have now also launched the TERRA TRAC system on our JAGUAR forager and AXION tractor.

Spring 2020

TERRA TRAC history 1987

1985 CLAAS developed their first rubber track prototype with Caterpillar.

1994

The first series-production combine on full rubber tracks was launched at the Farm Progress Show in the United States.

CLAAS started TERRA TRAC trials with a MEGA combine harvester.

1997 2004 2006

The track was suspended on the axle by rubber blocks to increase comfort and stability. GEN II.

The first TERRA TRAC was launched on a LEXION 450 which was attached rigidly to the axle. GEN I.

TERRA TRAC had a reinforced structure due to a one-piece cast frame to meet the demands of the increased weight of the machines.

2019 The AXION TT is the first half-track tractor with full suspension. The large footprint prevents the tractor from sinking into the ground in wet conditions.

2011 The new hydropneumatic suspension provided a high level of driving comfort in the field and on the road. This system is still fitted today. GEN III.

2018 The JAGUAR TT is the first forage harvester with tracks and sets new standards for soil protection. When turning at the end of the field, the JAGUAR TT automatically reduces the contact area of the crawler tracks by one third.

Art CLAAS —Arty Animals In this issue we are going to get arty with animals, our featured artist is Rachel Butcher who specialises in portraits of animals.

We asked Rachel: How did you become an animal portrait artist? “Coming from a shooting and horses background I have always loved drawing animals from a young age. Sketching mostly horses on any spare piece of paper I had handy. Even while at school and college I was asked to draw portraits of peoples pets, dogs, cats and horses. In the early days I was using pastels and watercolours. “After studying Graphic Design in Colchester and then Epsom School of Art, I worked full time as a graphic designer which involved mainly working at a computer and my fine art took a back seat. “After starting a family 10 years ago I just didn’t seem to have the time to get back into my art, but then one half term holiday I picked up a pencil again and started sketching! “Now with Polychromos coloured pencils, my chosen medium, and working from photographs I am loving drawing again, and with every portrait I try to bring out the character of the animal as well as creating a true likeness. I am also starting to extend my portfolio with wildlife drawings. I love talking to my customers about their pet, and sometimes get to meet them to take photographs to work from, which all helps with bringing out the character of the loved animal.” See more at facebook.com/ rachelbutcherart

“Meltalicious” ice cream 5. Cut the vanilla pod open lengthways and scrape out the seeds with the back of a knife, then add to the cream and milk.

You will need 4 free-range eggs, yolks only 100 g / 3½ oz golden caster sugar

6. Heat the cream and milk until just below boiling. Slowly pour the hot cream and milk onto the eggs and sugar, whisking as you go.

1 tsp cornflour, optional 300 ml / ½ pint double cream 300 ml / ½ pint full-fat milk 1 vanilla pod Large Bowl Whisk Saucepan Knife Freezer Proof Container Take care with knives and the oven, and get an adult to help you.

Make sure you have plenty of space in the freezer.

7. Sieve the custard into a clean pan, and set it over a very low heat. Stir the custard constantly with a wooden spoon, paying special attention to the corners of the pan, until it is steaming and has thickened slightly. The custard is ready when you can draw a clear line through it on the back of the wooden spoon. This can take up to 10 minutes. 8. Tip the custard into a large, shallow, freezer-proof container, and allow to cool to room temperature (you can speed this up by sitting the tub of custard in a large bowl of iced water). 9. Once at room temperature, place a lid on the custard and chill in the fridge overnight.

Method 1. First, separate the eggs, placing the yolks in a large bowl. 2. Add the sugar to the egg yolks and whisk until pale and really thick. 3. Add the cornflour (if using) and whisk well to incorporate into the egg yolks. 4. Put the cream and milk into a medium saucepan.

10. Once chilled, transfer the custard to the freezer and take it out every hour, for three hours, to whisk it with an electric handheld whisk. This will disperse the ice crystals and keep it smooth. 11. Then leave the ice-cream in the freezer for a final freeze, until it is solid. 12. Take the ice-cream out of the freezer a few minutes before you want to serve it. 13. Scoop the ice cream into bowls or cones and enjoy.

#backbritishfarming • British farmers produce all the tasty ingredients to make your favourite ice-cream. Here are some interesting facts about the animals that produce your milk, cheese, yoghurt and ice cream. • Milk is 90% water and helps to rehydrate the body • There are 1.84 million dairy cows in the UK • It takes a cow between 50 to 70 hours to turn grass into milk • British dairy farmers could fill 78 million bath tubs with the milk they produce every year. • 5 billion litres of milk is sold for drinking each year – that’s enough to fill 2000 Olympic swimming pools or if we were to drink a glass of a milk a day for 54 million years. Engineer Your Career To apply for a CLAAS Apprenticeship please email your CV and cover letter to: cukapprenticeships@claas.com or call Kerry Peck, Apprenticeship and Placement Coordinator 01284 763100.

I’m challenged everyday, everything is always changing and evolving with technology.

Will Harvey, 20 Service Engineer

With CLAAS you progress because you start as a Service Engineer and work your way through to Master Mechanic to Master Technician. You grow as a person, your confidence goes through the roof, you learn new things all the time and your always out and about.

Training through CLAAS is so thorough and all the qualifications that I get and the amount of opportunities CLAAS offer is really helpful. CLAAS value you as an individual. They genuinely look after you, they want you to stay, put you through all the training courses and all the different licenses that you need. I really enjoy working for CLAAS as a company.

James Walsh, 26 Service Engineer

I was given the chance to work in New Zealand which was a really good opportunity for me. I had never been on a plane on my own before.

Joe Klopper, 21

You don’t need to have an agricultural background to come into this trade. If you’re interested in engineering, it’s a good way to get into it.

Service Engineer

The people that I work with are really good blokes, they are more of a group of friends rather than work colleagues. To work for CLAAS is awesome. You’re not worrying about money, you are earning and learning at the same time. CLAAS helped me progress massively, they provide excellent training and supported me through college. claas.co.uk
