Common reasons
YOUR HOME INSURANCE COMPANY DENIED YOUR CLAIM.
Every year, home insurance companies deny thousands of claims across the United States. You buy home insurance to protect your home. You assume your insurance company will protect you – but that’s not always the case. Sometimes, your insurance company can deny your claim, reduce your payout, or offer a ridiculously low settlement. Today, we’re highlighting some of the most common reasons your home insurance company denied your claim.
Lack of Evidence: Your insurer may deny your claim due to a lack of evidence, a lack of documentation, poor-quality photographs, and other missing details. Insurance companies lose billions to fraud every year, and insurers want as much evidence as possible before approving your claim. Your claim may be denied due to lack of evidence.

Time Delays: If you take too long to file a claim, then your insurer may deny it. Insurers require you to file a claim in a timely manner. Typically, that means you must file a claim within 30 to 60 days of the incident. Ideally, you file a claim within hours of the incident, although that’s not always possible. If you take too long to file your claim, then your insurer could deny it.
Failure to Pay:

If you did not pay your insurance premiums, then your insurer could deny your claim. You are required to pay your claims on-time. Most insurers offer a grace period – a specific length of time when you’re still covered even though you didn’t pay your premiums on time. However, if you are outside of the grace period, then your insurance claim could be denied. Technically, you did not have insurance at the time of the accident – because you did not pay for it.
Failure to Maintain the Property:
As a homeowner, you are required to maintain your property. Home insurance covers unexpected costs – like a burst pipe. It does not cover expected costs – like replacing your roof every 20 years. If you fail to maintain your property, then insurance could deny your claim. Your insurer could claim you did not take preventative measures, for example, leading to a claim denial.

Damage Occurred from an Excluded Event: Insurance policies have certain excluded events. If your damage occurred due to an excluded event, then your claim may be denied. A standard homeowners insurance policy will cover fire damage, for example, but it will not cover flood damage.
Damage was Intentional: You cannot set fire to your property intentionally, then file an insurance claim. It’s insurance fraud. If your insurance company believes you damaged your property intentionally, then your claim could be denied.
Was your insurance claim denied? It could have been related to one of the reasons above. Insurers can deny your claim for any number of reasons – including legitimate and illegitimate reasons. To learn more about insurance claim denials, see The 12 Most Common Reasons Claims Are Denied.
