Things to Ask your Insurance Contractor Before Letting Them Handle your Insurance Claim

Some contractors offer to handle homeowners insurance claims. For smaller claims and reputable contractors, this could be a good idea. Unfortunately, some contractors take advantage of unsuspecting homeowners. Some contractors lure homeowners in with false promises – only to never complete repairs while taking the insurer’s money. To avoid being scammed, we recommend asking your insurance contractor a series of questions before letting the contractor handle your claim: Can I Get a Written Estimate? All reputable contractors can provide detailed, written estimates. These estimates outline the exact cost of supplies, labor, and other costs associated with the project. If a contractor gives you a vague estimate, or if the contractor is unwilling to provide a formal estimate, then it’s a red flag. What’s your Schedule and Timeframe? Some contractors take on too much work (especially after a natural disaster in a region). You might sign over your insurance claim, only to realize the contractor can’t fix your home for months. Ask about the schedule and timeframe. Verify the contractor has a timely plan for managing your project. What’s your License Number? All licensed contractors will happily provide their license number upon request. This license number proves they’re legally allowed to work in your state. What’s your Insurance Information? Don’t work with an uninsured contractor. It exposes you to too much liability. Ask for the contractor’s insurance information to verify coverage. Do You Have Similar Experience? If you’re dealing with a burst pipe insurance claim, then you want a contractor experienced with burst pipe insurance claims. Do You Guarantee Your Work? Most contractors have some type of satisfaction guarantee. Make sure the contractor has some type of guarantee process if you’re unhappy with the work for any reason.

By asking your contractor these questions, you can ensure you’re dealing with a reputable contractor before signing over your insurance claim.
