New beginnings As you are about to start the next important stage in your educational journey, now is the perfect time to think about your path so far. Secondary school is a fresh start, so take some time to reflect on your experiences at primary school and think about any changes you might like to make once you arrive at CGA.

What has gone well for you at primary school? What could have gone better? Now use the chart below to set yourself three targets for improvement at CGA.

My name is Erica and I am a Year 7 student at Clapton Girls’ Academy. I am in 7C. I really like my form tutor; she is very kind. I usually arrive at school at 08.00am so that I can go to the LRC (Learning Resources Centre) to finish off my homework or go to the Breakfast Club. Today, my first lesson was swimming at Kings Hall swimming baths. Since joining the academy, I have learnt to swim and I achieved a certificate for swimming 10m! After swimming, we had Technology. This is my favourite subject because I get to do exciting things like making sushi, chocolate boxes, dice, and gadgets. At break time, I go to my locker and sort out my books ready for the next lesson. I have a snack, a drink of water, and a chat with my friends before we set off for Languages.

Watch ‘A day in the life’ of a Year 7 student video on our website: www.clapton.hackney.sch.uk/parents/new-students/welcome-year-6/

In Languages, we are learning Spanish and today I got reward points for doing excellent work! I was very pleased with myself and my dad will be happy when I show him tonight.

School finishes at 2.50pm every day except on Tuesday, when we finish at 3.50pm. Every evening there are lots of clubs to choose from after school. I go to Science and Tennis Club.

I have school dinners. What I like about school dinners is the choice of food available. Today, I had vegetable pasta bake. I try to make sure that I get my five portions of fruit and vegetables every day!

Since coming to Clapton Girls’ Academy, I have made lots of new friends and I have learnt so many new things. I am really looking forward to going away with the girls in my year for the residential adventure week in May!

After lunch, we had Maths and I was a little bit disappointed because I only got 6/10 in my test. But my teacher explained where I went wrong so next time we have a test I know that I will get 10/10! Our last lesson of the day was Humanities, and we finished our unit of work on the Great Wall of China.

Your timetable On the next page, there is an example of a Year 7 timetable. You will keep a copy of your timetable in your school planner so that you know which lessons you have each day, where those lessons take place, and which teacher will be teaching you. You will also use your student planner to write down your homework and to keep track of whether it is week 1 or week 2, as your timetable will be slightly different in week 1 and week 2. For example:

Group

Subject

PRE

7y/Fr2

Teacher’s initials

Have a look at the example timetable on the next page and see whether you can use it to answer the following questions: 1. How many lessons will you have in a week? 2. How is Tuesday different from the other days of the week? 3. How many Maths lessons will you have each week? 4. Which lessons will you have only once a week? 5. In which room does this student have their English lesson? 6. Which subject is taught in C56? 7. Which subject will this student be studying during lesson 2 on Thursday, week 1? 8. Which subject will this student be studying during lesson 5 on Friday, week 2? 9. What is the last lesson of week 1? 10. Imagine that this is your timetable. Which days would you most enjoy and why?

Frequently Asked Questions Clapton is a very big school compared to my primary school. What will happen if I get lost?

The best thing to do is ask a teacher or an older student to kindly direct or take you to your next lesson if you are lost. If you find that there is no one around, knock on the door of the nearest class room and ask for some help. Alternatively, make your way to Student Reception and they will help you.

One of our values here at CGA is compassion, so we encourage all students to be caring and kind to each other. We also have a zero tolerance policy on bullying or any other type of negative behaviour. If you do feel worried about anything, you can let your Form Tutor, Intervention Mentor or Head of Year know and they will be happy to help you.

What should I do if I lose my belongings?

10

I’m a bit worried about being in the youngest year group at school. I am scared that the older girls will bully me. Will this happen? What should I do?

Retrace your steps, visiting all the classrooms and places you spent time in during that day or maybe even the day before. If after this you cannot find your belongings, go to lost property at Student Reception.

At your admission meeting, you can ask to be in the same tutor group as one of your friends. However, even if you are not in the same class as all of your friends, you will still be able to see them at break and lunchtime and at after school clubs.

Why are there three different lunch times during the school day?

Students

Will I be in the same form class as my friend? If not will I get a chance to see her during school?

Clapton is a big school with many students so we have three different lunch times to make sure that all students have time to eat. We have 4A which is at 12:20, 4B at 12:50 and 4C at 1:20. What lunch you will have depends on your timetable. More information and a breakdown of the student timetable can be found in this booklet.

Parents Parentpay is a website parents can use to make payments for music lessons, school trips and lunch. At the start of the year all parents will receive their Parentpay information. Uniform is ordered online through Price & Buckland at www.pbuniformonline.com

Will I receive regular updates about my daughter’s progress?

Yes, at CGA we endeavour to keep all parents updated on student progress as often as we can. To do this we have different events scheduled throughout the academic year such as Year 7 Key Information evening and Parents’ Evening. In addition to this, at the end of each term CGA distributes profile reports with information on student progress, behaviour etc. Parents can also call or email staff if they have specific questions.

Starting secondary can be a very scary experience. It is normal for anyone to have mixed emotions; excited, scared, nervous, happy, eager. If you find that your daughter is feeling nervous, let her Head of Year, Intervention Mentor or Form Tutor know. They will see to it that she receives some support for that day and for as long as she may need it. Transition is a very important focus at CGA. We have learning mentors and different pastoral interventions available to support all students.

How will my daughter be assessed on her learning whilst in Year 7?

What is Parentpay and what can I use it for?

What should I do if my daughter is feeling anxious about starting at Clapton?

At the start of Year 7, students sit baseline tests in some subjects so that the school can get a clear picture of where each student is with their learning and they can be placed in the appropriate set to support them with making progress. In addition to this, at the end of each term students will sit an end of term assessment for each subject. Using this information and that gathered from class work and home learning, teachers will assess the progress each student has made.

Yes. CGA provides many opportunities for students to attend school trips. We go on trips as a year group, for example to the theatre, or your daughter Will my might be invited to go on trips in smaller groups due to her interests, for daughter have example, debating, rowing or basketball matches. We also go on trips the opportunity related to our subject areas, for example, English workshops. We also have to attend any ECM (Every Child Matters) and PSHCE days where we are off timetable to school trips? participate in different activities both in and outside of school. Also every year, Year 7 students go on a residential camping trip to Phasels Woods. 11

The women behind the buildings

Nightingale Florence Nightingale, (12 May 1820 – 13 August 1910) was a celebrated English social reformer and statistician, and the founder of modern nursing. Nightingale laid the foundation of professional nursing with the establishment of her nursing school at St Thomas’ Hospital in London. It was the first secular nursing school in the world, now part of King’s College London. Her social reforms include improving healthcare for all sections of British society, advocating better hunger relief in India, helping to abolish prostitution laws that were over-harsh to women, and expanding the acceptable forms of female participation in the workforce.

14

Pankhurst

Curie

Emmeline Pankhurst, (15 July 1858 – 14 June 1928) was a British political activist and leader of the British suffragette movement who helped women win the right to vote.

Marie Curie, (7 Nove 1934), was a Polish French physicist and conducted pioneerin radioactivity.

Pankhurst is named as one of the 100 Most Important People of the 20th Century: “she shaped an idea of women for our time; she shook society into a new pattern from which there could be no going back.” Her work is recognised as a crucial element in achieving women’s suffrage in Britain. Pankhurst was introduced at the age of 14 to the women’s suffrage movement and founded the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU), an allwomen suffrage advocacy organisation dedicated to “deeds, not words.”

She was the first wom Prize, the first person to win twice and the win twice in multiple achievements include of the theory of radio for isolating radioact the discovery of two and radium.

Rosa Parks

Tereshkova

Rosa Parks, (February 4, 1913 – October 24, 2005) was an African American civil rights activist, whom the United States Congress called “the first lady of civil rights” and “the mother of the freedom movement”.

Valentina Tereshkova, (born 6 March 1937) is a retired Russian cosmonaut and politician. She is the first woman to have flown in space and completed 48 orbits of the Earth in her three days in space.

On December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Parks refused to obey bus driver James F. Blake’s order to give up her seat in the coloured section to a white passenger, after the white section was filled. Parks’ act of defiance and the Montgomery Bus Boycott became important symbols of the modern Civil Rights Movement. She became an international icon of resistance to racial segregation.

After the dissolution of the first group of female cosmonauts in 1969, she became a prominent member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, holding various political offices. In 2013, she offered to go on a one-way trip to Mars if the opportunity arose, and at the opening ceremony of the 2014 Winter Olympics, she was a carrier of the Olympic flag. Earlier this year CGA physics students were specially invited to meet Dr. Tereshkova for her 80th birthday celebration at the Science Museum. 15
