While the concept of growing older is a compelling topic, it can even be intimidating for some people for many different reasons, it’s important to remember to recognise and accept that the process of aging is a natural part of the life cycle.

And it happens to us all.

While growing older may limit your ability to participate in certain activities or make it more difficult to do the things you used to do, it’s also important to remember that growing old, doesn’t mean you are old.

After all, age is just a number.

Life doesn’t and shouldn’t have to stop once a certain number is reached and you find yourself blowing out more and more candles on your birthday cake.

Sometimes, it is just about reassessing your life and your changing circumstances and knowing when additional steps are needed to help make life easier and stress free for you and your loved ones.

You should never feel embarrassed to ask for help either.

Throughout the Clarence Valley, there are plenty of reputable local agencies which provide quality services in a professional, supportive and

caring environment.

If you recognise that a friend or family member may need some extra help or reassurance for their own peace of mind, there are several well-established businesses who are able to assist.

We've come a long way since February 2016 when we started playing golf croquet on the old netball fields next to the Raymond Laurie Sports Centre on Angourie Road Yamba. Most members now have their own mallets, and we have plenty for visitors. If you've never played, we are happy to teach you.

We recently received our new long-sleeved, sun safe tee shirts embroidered with our team logo (see photo).

It's a great spot to get out into the fresh air, the greens are sheltered by coastal rain forest, local wildlife visits and we can hear the sea on nearby Pippi Beach. Our three greens are not yet "bowling green perfect" but with the council mowing team we're working on it.

• When you are looking for the best aged care facility for a loved one, here are some helpful hints to remember…

Look for aged care facilities which are close to your place of residence as many elderly people feel more comfortable when they know their family members are close by. This also offers them reassurance – and there are no excuses for not visiting.

• Call different places and ask about what they can offer your loved one. It is highly recommended you do this, especially if your loved one needs a lot of additional care and medical attention.

• Visit local aged care facilities. This will allow you to meet and observe the staff and how the other residents interact with one another.

Also, if there are a few places which

stand out to you, plan your visits at different times.

This will enable you to meet a higher number of staff members and also allow you to see what activities are offered, what the food is like if you visit during meal times, and how clean and well maintained the building is.

• Ask questions during your visits and ensure that the chosen aged care facility meets all of the requirements for your loved one. Ask about outdoor activities, physiotherapy, group activities and social outings.

• Talk to your family and ensure you can make a well-informed decision together and one which you all happily agree with • Once you have chosen the best aged care facility for your loved one, read the contract thoroughly and ensure you speak to the manager if you have any concerns before signing it.

Support starts at home – transforming lives across the Clarence Valley Many of us have spent more time at home in the last 18 months, and so the place where we find sanctuary has never been more important. A survey conducted for Wesley Mission by McCrindle Research found that almost 70% of people have a new appreciation for having a safe place to call home due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Opening your home to a child or young person is one way that people across the Clarence Valley are helping to change lives in their local community.

The same survey found that 22% of people would be interested in becoming a foster carer. Still, very few knew that all types of carers are needed, including for temporary periods such as a few days to provide respite, short-term, permanent or long-term care, including adoption.

Wesley Dalmar is Wesley Mission’s program for children and carers and provides wrap-around support with education, health, mentoring and life skills.

Watching a loved one battle dementia is one of the most heartbreaking experiences for friends and families.

It is also important to know that there are several less severe conditions which have similar symptoms.

In Australia, there are more than 10000 cases of dementia diagnosed each year, and it was the second leading cause of death in the country in 2019.

It is also one of the most misunderstood medical conditions.

It is important that medical attention is immediately sought if you or a loved one start experiencing or start to notice different behavioural characteristics and changes.

Currently, there are an estimated 500000 Australians living with dementia and more than 1.5 million people involved with their care.

If you have any concerns, you are also encouraged to seek professional medical advice at the earliest opportunity.

Dementia affects the ability to think and carry out daily chores.

Home Modifications can range from the installation of a small grab rail in the shower to the installation of a lift.

It also affects behaviour and changes the way people perform their social and working routines.

While dementia is more common in people aged 65 and over, it can also affect younger adults.

People aged between 40 and 50 are also considered to be at risk of developing the condition.

Described as a disorder which affects the brain, dementia is also used to describe the symptoms of other illnesses.

It isn’t one specific disease.

Some of the most common forms of dementia include vascular dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and Huntington’s disease.

Early symptoms include confusion, personality changes, forgetfulness

Unfortunately, while there is no cure for dementia, medical research continues and there are several support services available to help you and your family manage the condition.

Dementia is not an inherited condition, and while we cannot prevent growing older or guarantee protection against the condition, adopting a healthy and active lifestyle can reduce the risk of developing the disease.

Eating a healthy and balanced diet, quitting smoking, reducing your alcohol intake and lowering cholesterol levels to improve heart health while keeping your brain active play important roles in reducing the risk of dementia.

It’s also important to maintain a healthy mindset.

Spend time with your family and friends, play card games and complete puzzles and wordsearches and vary your daily activity so you have a wide variety.

Remember, your greatest support and the ones who mean the most to you.

Home modifications are available to those in need Clarence Valley Home Modifications and Maintenance Service Inc. (CVHMMS) has provided services to frail older or those living with disability in the Valley since 1991, as a not-for-profit organisation. All work is guaranteed and is completed by licensed, experienced tradespeople.

Some client examples: Arthur lives with pulmonary disease and is experiencing fatigue and dizziness while having a shower. To assist him, CVHMMS lowered the shower hob, installed a shower seat within the cubicle and a hand-held shower hose on a grab rail, together with grab rails at the shower entrance to enhance his safety and independence.

Abigail was recently involved in a motor vehicle accident. As a result of her spinal injury, she has limited mobility and dexterity.

Following a builder consultation with the CVHMMS builder and her OT, an application was prepared for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) to provide access using a ramp, widening of the doorways within her home to accommodate her wheelchair, as well as an accessible bathroom.

Betty was becoming less confident in tackling her front stairs. Following an Occupational Therapist (OT) assessment, CVHMMS manufactured bi-lateral handrails to assist her to

safely ascend or descend these 11 steps.

Modifications can range from a grab rail, through to lever-handled taps or a ramp.

After I moved to the valley, I felt I had extra time on my hands. I rang the Cancer Council and they suggested I call Connect You Too.

I was a Sherriff’s Officer for 31 years. I supported abused women and vulnerable witnesses. I drew upon my caring nature.

More than ever, community members who are unable to drive themselves are relying on volunteers to help them get to important medical appointments and social events.

What are you hoping to gain out of volunteering with Connect You Too? I look forward to helping people and mentoring them. Talking to people.

It is great to help people have a day out. I like meeting new characters.

Mental awareness for senior citizens EMMA PRITCHARD

While most people associate mental illness as more commonly affecting younger adults and adolescents, the sad reality is mental illness does not discriminate, and anyone of any age can be touched by it.

The causes of mental illness amongst elderly people remain unknown, but experts believe several factors including the loss of a loved one,

retirement or approaching retirement age play a role in its development as they represent significant and uncontrollable changes.

Life changing circumstances can be difficult to accept and process, and these can be especially challenging times for senior citizens.

As the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic continues to prevent families and friends from coming together, it is especially important to stay in close

and frequent communication with loved ones, especially those who don’t live nearby, or live alone.

Sometimes, something as simple as a text message or a five-minute phone call to let them know you’re thinking of them, you love them, and you’re there if they need you can make all the difference in the world.

A person’s mental wellbeing is extremely important, and sadly, mental illness amongst seniors is often confused with the symptoms of aging.

It is also increasing.

Several of the most common symptoms of mental illness in an elderly person may include, but are not limited to social withdrawal, a lack of concern for personal appearance, weight loss and/or weight gain, changes in sleeping patterns, fatigue, mood swings, excess worrying and panic and changes in regular routines.

If you are concerned for the mental wellbeing of an elderly friend or family member, it is important to speak to them and encourage them to seek professional assistance.

With more and more people remaining in isolation within the past 18 months, especially those aged 55 and over, the time has never been more vital to watch for the first signs and act accordingly.

Anxiety and depression amongst seniors have also risen as the Covid-19 pandemic continues and forces more people to remain separated from each other.

If an elderly friend or family member is showing a lack of interest in their hobbies, decreased interest in daily activities and socialising, a pessimistic attitude and/or significant changes in their diet, they may be experiencing depression and/or anxiety.

While therapy, support groups, prescribed medications, one-on-one counselling sessions, psychological interventions and exercise are all common treatments for seniors diagnosed with mental illness, the most important and invaluable way to combat metal illness is being there for those you love and offer them unconditional love, emotional care and support.

Offer to accompany them to medical appointments and support groups, suggest you go walking together or have a social outing, if possible, encourage them to discuss what’s on their mind and make them feel involved and included in activities.

AccessCar provide accessible travel A new wheelchair accessible vehicle is now available in Grafton.

Support service provider New Dimension In Support Service Pty Ltd, in partnership with Gold Coast based AccessCar, took delivery of the first of two accessible Kia Carnival vehicles in Grafton last week.

These current model vehicles, with factory fitted accessible ramp and fittings, became available from July 1, on day to day, short term and long-term hire agreements. When necessary, a driver can also be available.

Hire fees (less than $200 per day) can be charged directly to participant NDIS funding packages. Additional cost is your purchase of fuel – there is no mileage limitation or cost involved in the hire. Renee has found her new home at St Catherine’s Renee Brodie is the new Facility Manager at the Southern Cross Care St Catherine’s care home at Grafton, and she is ready to make a difference in the lives of her Grafton residents.

Renee grew up in Deloraine, a small town north of Tasmania, and whilst she loved the town and its people, she eventually flew the family nest in search of her passion.

She initially discovered a talent for cooking and worked as a chef in Townsville and then Lismore, where she started her own family.

But Renee felt something was missing in her life and wanted to give back to the community, so she gained qualifications in aged care and eventually moved her family to the busy Tweed Coast region.

Renee found her passion in caring for our most vulnerable in the community and became Facility Manager at the Southern Cross Care Banora Point care home in 2019.

“The people in our care homes must feel safe and loved. We should respect them as individuals and take time to get to know them. This is especially important for those experiencing dementia”, says Renee

With a growing family and a desire to experience a more relaxed lifestyle, Renee has recently found her new home at Grafton and accepted a role at St Catherine’s as the new Facility Manager.

She now brings a wealth of experience to the Grafton region and is quickly getting to know all her residents and staff well. “I would like to think any of our residents or their families can feel comfortable enough to talk to me at any time. They need security and comfort in the care we provide,” she says

Once complete, it will offer more rooms, café facilities, kitchens, a chapel and a wellness hub incorporating a library, hair salon and lounge areas. External courtyards and landscaped areas will allow residents and families to enjoy time together outdoors.
