Bream, Bass, Snapper - Coffs has it all! My name is Troy Hardaker and I am lucky to call this place home. I grew up in this area and have spent many hours exploring all the Coffs coast has to offer by boat and on foot. Whether it's freshwater or salt water if you are willing to put the time in there is some awesome fishing to be found. I have been lucky enough to work for some pretty awesome companies from Rivera Motor Yachts through to Telwater Australia where I have been lucky enough to be apart of the team that get to build some of the best boats in the industry. I have also worked for BCF Australia and am currently the store manager at Road Tech Marine Coffs Harbour.
“Hi there, my name is Sam Gilchrist and much like you I love to fish! There’s no sport, pass time or hobby quite like it, you’re able to relax or challenge yourself as much or as little as you like all while enjoying some of the most magnificent locations on the planet. We hope that the tips and locations presented within this publication help you come tight on that fish of a lifetime. Please check us out at www.bythegills.com for some epic apparel, vids and tips YEWWWWWW!!!”
Tim Schofield has been in the fishing industry since 2001. He started with Shimano Australia Fishing, managing the Service and Spare Parts Department. Tim has written numerous articles for fishing magazines on servicing and repairing fishing reels. Living on the beautiful Coffs Coast he enjoys working on fishing tackle and is still one of Australia’s best fishing reel technicians. Tim is always willing to offer advice and share his local knowledge on fishing. Tim is a keen estuary fisherman who has competed and won various Bream fishing competitions in the past. He loves getting his line wet outside fishing for species such as Snapper and Mackerel.

G’Day, my name is Dale Johnson and I’ve spent the majority of my life living, and fishing, around the Coffs Coast. I simply love fishing and have travelled all over our great country catching everything from Sea Run Trout to big Barra, but my real passion is light tackle lure fishing, mainly in some of the great estuaries and inland locations we have here on the Coffs Coast and within a few hours of it! I’ve spent over 16 years working in the fishing tackle industry, as well as spending a number of years as a fishing guide, teaching people how to use lures and putting clients onto fish around this great region. Coffs really has a fantastic amount of fishing opportunities, and hopefully this guide helps you find some great fishing at one of the many easy to find locations!
My name is Rob Lang and I own and operate Coffs Coast Sport Fishing. I started fishing at a very young age and it has been a passion ever since. I have lived and operated charter fishing businesses for 17 years on the north coast of NSW, for the last 11 years based in Coffs Harbour. I am an avid freshwater fisherman as well and am lucky enough to live on one of the best stretches of Bass water on the coast. Over the last 15 years I have made regular appearances on a number of TV shows including Fishing Trip, Hook Line and Sinker and Merv Hughes Fishing. With some of the most diverse fishing in the country it truly is God’s country and always a pleasure to introduce people to what the Coffs Coast has to offer.
Garry Hambly is an Internationally Accredited Fly Casting Instructor based on the Coffs Coast. He is also the owner of South Pacific Fly Rod Company, Australia’s leading fly fishing brand. Garry processes a wealth of fly fishing knowledge and experience, he has fished many of the world’s most exotic locations from the South Pacific islands to the Florida keys of the USA but he says, “The Coffs Coast region has the best fishing options in the world and I wouldn’t live anywhere else” He’s been operating his fly fishing school for over 11 years and has introduced many to the wonderful world of fly fishing. If you’d like to start fly fishing, Garry’s the man to contact. Details are listed on www.A1FlyFishing. com.au or phone him directly on 0412 271 365

Red Rock Retaining Wall
Image: Sam Gilchrist
What is it?
What fish should I target?
Best time to fish?
Lower reaches and mouth of Corindi Creek.
Bream, Whiting, Dart and Australian Salmon.
This is a great spot to fish all year round. The shady location is great during the summer months.
Where is it? As you come into Red Rock, off the Pacific Highway, along Red Rock Road, continue until you intersect with Lawson Street. The wall is located along the edge of the river in Red Rock Reserve.
What bait should I use? Bread, Nippers and Prawns all work well. Black or green weed for Blackfish.
What dream fish might I catch? Some very big Blackfish and Bream.
What lures are best? Soft plastics are the way to go.
What’s there? The reserve is a pleasant, sheltered place to spend a day. There is a children’s playground, benches, shaded picnic tables, plenty of grassy areas and trees to picnic under. There is also an amenities block and a boat ramp.
For the kids This is one of the best spots on the coast for kids. The shaded grassed area makes an ideal spot for kids to run around and the playground provides another opportunity to keep them occupied. It is also great spot for kids to go fishing with plenty of fish to catch. There are also shops close by.

Corindi Beach What is it?
What bait should I use?
A beautiful pristine beach with some rocky areas near the shore.
Beach worms, fresh cut baits (i.e. Pilchard, Yellowtail or Slimey Mackerel), pink Nippers.
Where is it? Corindi is almost half way between Coffs Harbour and Grafton. Turn off Pacific Highway at Range Road East.
What’s there? The beach itself has no amenities however Corindi Beach village has a caravan park, a tavern, general store, service station, and a cultural centre.
What lures are best? Soft plastics are the way to go, although it's worth giving surface lures a go for a bit of fun.
Best time to fish? This is a great spot to fish all year round, however the best time is in the summer months.
What dream fish might I catch? What fish should I target? This area produces a range of fish such as Australian Salmon, Bream, Whiting and Flathead.
You may be lucky enough to land a large Whiting, or the ever sought after 1kg plus Bream. The dream fish would be a nice Mulloway.

Arrawarra Beach What is it?
What bait should I use?

Where is it? Five minutes North of Woolgoolga, 20 minutes North of Coffs Harbour.
What lures are best? Small soft plastics such as Squidgy Wrigglers and or surface lures such as a Skinny Pop.
What’s there? There’s a beach launching facility for the boaties, public amenities including showers and a reasonably large grassed area for picnics.

Woolgoolga Beach South What is it?
What’s there?
What bait should I use?
Woolgoolga Beach South is a beach and headland. There is great land based fishing off the beach. The headland is not as easy to access.
There is a kids park close by and also the caravan park.
Best bait to use is Beach Worms.
Where is it? The beach is located near the Woolgoolga main street, in front of the surf club.
Off the beach target Bream, Whiting and Tailor and from the headland target Snapper and Groper.
Stay Safe Spot a rip current: Rip currents will occur in deeper water, so it’s usually a darker colour compared to the white breaking waves over a sandbank. Because the water is deeper, there will be fewer breaking waves which can give the appearance of a safer spot to swim.
What lures are best?
What fish should I target?
Lures don’t seem to work as well as bait in this area.
Best time to fish? The best time to fish here is in the warmer months of Spring, Summer and Autumn. This is a great time of the year for the kids also.
What dream fish might I catch? There has been some big Whiting and good size Bream caught here.
For the kids
Great for kids, safe beach, shallow and no steep drop offs.

"WOOPI"
as good as it gets Woolgoolga – affectionately known as ‘Woopi’ – is a pleasant seaside town 25 kilometres north of Coffs Harbour.
The town has the largest regional Sikh/Punjabi population in Australia. The imposing Guru Nanak Sikh Gurudwara (Sikh Temple) is not only the town’s number one landmark, but also the place of worship for the local Punjabi Sikh community, who make up half of Woolgoolga’s population. The temple is open to visitors on weekends. Bollywood markets and Woolgoolga beach markets, along with the annual CurryFest are other reasons to visit. Woolgoolga Headland is known as Whale Watch Headland. With some of the best coastal views in NSW, it’s the perfect place to see migrating Humpback Whales pass the coast between May and November. It is truly a
magical spot to stop and rest. About four kilometres inland are Sherwood Nature Reserve and Woolgoolga Picnic Area. Enjoy the two kilometre riverside walk along Woolgoolga Creek through subtropical rainforest to the spectacular waterfall. Woolgoolga is also home to the fascinating shipwreck, “The Buster”. The Buster was driven ashore and became a total wreck at the mouth of Woolgoolga Lake on March 8, 1893. The wreck is sometimes uncovered during high tides and storms. Whether your just passing through the area or holidaying on the Coffs Coast, Woolgoolga is one spot you won’t want to miss.

Coffs Harbour Jetty What is it?
What bait should I use?
The Jetty Coffs Harbour. Built in 1892 Coffs Jetty is the largest remaining timber jetty in NSW. It is a great place to sit and fish, watch the fishing boats, canoe paddlers and cruising yachts come and go, photograph the sunrise or watch the swimmers and seabirds.
Best baits include Beach Worms, Pilchards and Prawns.
Where is it?
Top Tips Burley up under the wharf to attract the fish.
For the kids Great for kids above 10 years. There is a long drop from the wharf to the water, so a certain level of responsibility is required.
The Jetty is located off Jordan Esplanade.
Steve Butterworth
What lures are best? Soft plastic lures and Vibe/ Blades.
Best time to fish? All year round.
What dream fish might I catch? Very big Tailor and the occasional Kingfish prowl around the wharf.
What’s there? There are toilets, a picnic area, parks, BBQ, shelters, shade, and an ice cream van in warmer months!
Note: Remember to comply with bag and size limits and only keep what you can use. See pages 58 and 59 for details.
What fish should I target? Flathead, Tailor, Bream and Whiting.

South Wall Quarry What is it?
What fish should I target?
Headland with fishing platforms situated on both the northeastern side of the headland and also the southeastern side offering anglers protection in some instances.
Everything from Spanish and Spotted Mackerel to Bonito and Tailor in the summer months with Kingfish and Snapper in the winter season.
Where is it? South Wall Quarry is a headland directly opposite Mutton Bird Island just past the old Coffs Harbour Deep Sea Fishing Club.
What’s there? There is no facilities situated at the South Wall Quarry apart from a spacious car park along with a life buoy located on the north eastern fishing platform to ensure safety is kept paramount.
Not a spot for kids
What bait should I use? Whole Squid or Pilchards rigged with two Snelled hooks with a small running ball sinker that will allow the bait to sink slowly. Live bait is always going to be best. With Bonito and Tailor being able to be caught it is always a good idea to have a few wire rigs made up ready for some Mackerel in the summer months.
What lures are best? Metal slugs and soft plastics are the lures of choice at the South Wall Quarry. These slugs prove deadly on
Bonito and Tailor in the summer months and do catch a fair few Tuna in the winter months if you are willing to put in the hours. Soft plastics such as the 7-inch jerk shad (pearl white is my favorite) tend to prove deadly on Kingfish and Snapper in the winter months.
Best time to fish? The south wall quarry fishes well all year round. In mid winter (May, June) work for Kingfish and Snapper and the summer/ autumn months (February, March) tend to be the most productive for Tailor, Mackerel and Bonito
What dream fish might I catch? Big Spanish Mackerel and Kingfish.

South Solitary What is it?
What fish should I target?
South Solitary Island is one of Coffs Harbours most picturesque and spectacular destinations both above water and below. Highly regarded for its scuba diving potential yet also one of the best places on the Coffs coast to tangle with some of the best apex predators available to a rod and reel.
There is a wide variety of choice from pelagic such as Spanish Mackerel and Kingfish to the bottom dwelling Teraglin and Snapper.
Where is it? South Solitary Island is situated 18 km off Coffs Harbour to the north east.
1/8th – ¼ size jig head. Floating stick baits. Lures such as the Maria loaded 140mm, any of the BFP Swim baits. Consider trolling as well. Halco deep divers are always a great place to start.
Best time to fish?
What bait should I use? Live baits like Slimy Mackerel in the summer and both Slimy Mackerel and Yellow Tail Scads in the winter. Try free swimming the live baits out behind the boat or slow trolling them. Nothing beats a whole squid or strip bait like Slimy Mackerel or Bonito on a snelled rig with a light ball sinker for Snapper.
What’s there?
What lures are best?
There are no facilities unless you bring them yourself. With access not possible onto the island there is no chance of a toilet or shade.
A soft plastic on light jig head is good for Kingfish and bottom dwelling species. 7 inch Berkley gulp Jerk shads along with squidgy flick baits on a
South Solitary Island fishes well a large portion of the year. May, June, July tend to work the best for Kingfish and Snapper and February, March tend to be the most productive for the Mackerel. You just have to choose what you are after and get out there and wet a line.
What dream fish might I catch?
Anything from metre plus Kingfish to Spanish Mackerel in excess of 15 kgs. Some large Snapper have been caught at South Solitary with many being caught on the south eastern side at the base of the island.

Boambee Creek What is it?
What fish should I target?
Best time to fish?
Boambee Creek is one of the many small creeks that the Coffs coast has to offer with a diverse range of fishing options.
Whiting, Flathead and Bream along with Blackfish. There is also Jewfish on the surrounding beaches.
The best time to fish Boambee Creek is the summer months. There are not many better ways to spend a day than wading around casting soft plastics for Flathead or floating back yabbies’ for Bream. Summer brings the Whiting on the bite and with Whiting being able to be caught in plague proportions in the summer months the kids will for sure be kept busy, as will the parents removing hooks and rebaiting.
Where is it? What bait should I use?
Boambee Creek is situated to the south of Coffs Harbour. Boambee Reserve is located at the mouth of Boambee Creek along First Avenue. The upper reaches of the creek can be accessed along Hogbin drive and turning into High-Tec drive in Toormina.
Yabbies are the bait of choice when targeting Bream, Whiting and Flathead. Nippers can be caught with just the humble old Yabbie pump Sandworms are also a great option.
What’s there?
What lures are best?
What dream fish might I catch?
Soft plastics provide anglers with the chance to chase a variety of species. Soft plastics such as the 4 inch Gulp Nemesis in pumpkinseed or pearl watermelon along with the Gulp Swimming Mullet in pumpkin seed also in the 4 inch are great places to start.
Boambee Creek offers the chance to crack the magic meter when it comes to Flathead or the 40cm Whiting along with some trophy Bream. If you are willing to put in the hours and do the miles you definitely will be rewarded with the fish of a lifetime.
Two boat ramps in separate areas allow almost the entire river system to be fished. Boambee Bay Reserve at the mouth of the creek is perfect for the family with large sand flats, undercover shelters and BBQs along with the facilities to launch a small tinny.

Sawtell What is it?
What’s there?
Best time to fish?
It is the mouth of Boambee Creek, Sawtell Beach and rock masses. There is very easy access to all areas.
There are no facilities here, but it is an easy walk to the shops. Situated right behind the caravan park.
Dusk and dawn especially if it coincides with a high tide. Great all year round.
What fish should I target?
Large Flathead up to to 3kg and big Bream. GTs have been caught here in the summer months.
What dream fish might I catch?
Where is it? Just ten minutes south from Coffs Harbour using the Link Road. Walk along the boardwalk and fish this side of the creek. Along this stretch there are patches of rock and sandy areas for fishing. Sawtell is renowned for its boutique shopping and quiet seaside lifestyle.
With the mix of both the creek and the beach you can target anything from Whiting, Bream and Flathead. Large Flathead have been known to be caught here.
Robert PK
What bait should I use? Worms are best and fresh prawns if you get them on the day.
For the kids
What lures are best?
Sawtell beach is patrolled most days during the summer months.
Some areas can be quite shallow so small soft plastics work best.

Bellinger River
Dale Johnson
What is it? An estuary system with great land based and boat based fishing options. Both the Bellinger/Kalang systems are recreational fishing havens closed to commercial fishing – and they are full of fish!
Where is it? Approximately 25 minutes drive south of Coffs harbor, the best access point is to follow the river to the small town of Mylestom.
What’s there? If you head all the way to Mylestom, you’ll find the tidal swimming pool which offers fantastic land based fishing options, as well as the Mylestom shop and playgrounds, perfect to keep the kids occupied.
There are 2 boat ramps at Mylestom to access the river by boat, and the pontoon is also a great land based spot – just remember to make way for boats that need to use the facility! There are several artificial reefs in the Bellinger river which offer great fish habitat, one of which is right near the boat ramps – look for the yellow markers).
What fish should I target? The river is full of Bream, Whiting and Flathead. You’ll also find some good Luderick and if persistent there are some great Mulloway.
For the kids The tidal pool at Mylestom is a safe place to fish and swim, with a playground on the hill above. Just watch small children near the edges of the pool if fishing. What lures are best? Paddle tail and curl tail plastics up to 120mm are great for the flats and deeper holes, also try some smaller 2” grubs and hard body minnows around snags and edges too
Best time to fish? It’s a great spot with excellent fishing all year round.
What dream fish might I catch?
What bait should I use? Prawns and whitebait are great but the best is live nippers pumped fresh from the sand flats.
The system holds some monster Jewfish, and stories of Flathead close to the meter mark are becoming common.

Bellinger River - Bass What is it?
What’s there?
What bait should I use?
Bellinger River is a fresh water river in the upper reaches known for its Bass fishing and superior swimming holes. The Bellinger River offers anglers the chance to chase the native Australian Bass in their native habitat.
The Bellinger River does not offer any facilities such as picnic areas, boat ramps or toilets due to its remoteness. Start your journey at Gordonsville Crossing which provides the angler a safe place to put the kayaks or canoes in and begin the 8km paddle down to the Bellingen bridge located in the middle of the township of Bellingen. This is a safe place to pull out the kayaks.
Bait is not a highly recommended way of chasing the Australian Bass and lures will out fish bait 90% percent of the time. Baits that can be used are earthworms suspended under a float but lures that imitate creatures such as Cicadas are always a better option providing a lifelike imitation whilst ensuring the fish is not gut hooked.
What fish should I target?
What lures are best?
Where is it? Located roughly 10 minutes drive from Bellingen, Gordonsville Crossing is a perfect place to start the journey down the Bellinger river in search of the Australian Bass. Gordonsville Crossing allows anglers to cover roughly 7km of pristine Bass habitat. Gordonville Rd, Boggey Creek is where the crossing is located.
The Bellinger River provides anglers the perfect opportunity to target Australian Bass. The Bellinger river is also home to the Eastern Cod which is a highly protected species on the mid north coast.
There are many options when it comes to lure fishing for Bass on the Bellinger River. My personal favorite is fishing surface lures such as Timeco Soft Shell Cicadas or Mega Bass Sigletts under structure. These cicada →

Bellinger River - Bass imitations are best fished by casting under structure such as undercut banks or hard against trees and reed banks, which are in abundance along the stretch from Gordonsville Crossing to the bridge. Once the lure hits the water it is best to let the lure sit in the water to imitate a Cicada that has just fallen from a tree normally this is when the Bass will come up and hit it clean off the surface nearly ripping the rod out of your hand. Sometimes they may take a little bit more convincing which is where you may need to twitch the rod tip a few times or shake the rod in order to get the Cicada to twitch and create a commotion. Once the lure has been in the strike zone hard against
the structure and you have twitched it a few times its time to slow roll the lures back out towards the boat with multiple pauses on the journey back. Surface fishing is one of the most exhilarating forms of fishing providing anglers with explosive surface strikes. Deep divers are also another option providing anglers with the chance to target fish held deep in structure or in deeper water where surface lures are not getting the bite. Casting deep divers into structure or into deeper holes and slow rolling them back provides great aggressive reaction bites and can prove very successful when the fish are held deeper in the water column
(cont)
Michael Goodwin
Best time to fish? The best time is the warmer months as the warm water brings active bass to the surface. The summer months also bring out the cicadas which is the primary food source for Bass. Bass can be legally targeted all year round but it is advised that anglers avoid keeping spawning bass. A zero bag limit is implemented between May to August during spawning season. Bass are a prized sports fish and have poor eating quality so catch and release ensures the fishery is unharmed and is available for many generations to come.
What dream fish might I catch? The magic 50cm Bass is what every Bass angler dreams of and this is a real possibility in this river.

FISHING COFFS COAST - 2022

For the kids The banks along Atherton drive are safe for all ages and the board walk at the lagoon is great to take a walk and see lots of fish and wildlife!
Kalang River What is it? An estuary system that shares the Bellinger River mouth. Both the Bellinger/Kalang systems are recreational fishing havens closed to commercial fishing – and they are full of fish!
Where is it? Best access is from the Atherton Drive area at Urunga, about 30 minutes drive south of Coffs Harbour. Look for South Arm Road for access further up the river.
What’s there? Urunga is a coastal town on the banks of the Kalang River. There are 2 good boat ramps and plenty of spots to pull up along the riverbank for a fish. The boardwalk at Urunga Lagoon provides access to the
river mouth/beach and there is some great fishing around the lagoon and along the rock walls. For those with a boat or kayak, the river around Newry Island is speed restricted so is a great place to find some calm stretches of river to flick a lure or drift for a flathead. If you want to venture a little further up the river, take South Arm Road for to find some quiet places out of the way to fish the banks, or there is a makeshift ramp suitable for kayaks or small boats.
What bait should I use? Prawns, whitebait, pilchards and live nippers will all work well.
What lures are best? Smaller 2-3” soft plastics and hard bodies work well around the many oyster leases in the Kalang, as well as larger 80-120mm curl and paddle tail plastics in the deeper areas.
Best time to fish? You will find good fish all year round in the Kalang.
What dream fish might I catch? What fish should I target? Whiting and Flathead on the sand flats near the mouth are great and there are plenty of Bream.
There are some big Whiting that cruise the flats near the mouth on a high tide, get some live nippers or even try a small clear popper to get amongst these kidney slappers!

Nambucca River/Warrell Creek ramp and some riverside parks that offer some great platforms to fish from.
What is it? A large estuary and creek system with lots of options to fish from both the boat or bank.
What fish should I target?
Where is it? 35 minutes drive South of Coffs Harbour you’ll find great access to the River from Nambucca, and another 10 minutes further to access at Macksville.
What’s there? The Nambucca River is a huge system full or sand flats, rock walls, oyster leases and endless natural fish habitat. The ‘Vee Wall’ right near the mouth of the river is great for some easy access land based fishing. Further up the river at Macksville there is a good boat
Blackfish and Bream along the rock walls as well as tailor near the Rivers large mouth. Flathead and Whiting around the flats at the mouth of Warrell Creek.
What bait should I use? Live Nippers are the go to here, but sand worm, prawns or cut pilchard are all great as well.
For the kids
What lures are best? Try some soft vibes to cover large areas of water around sand flats and drop offs, smaller grubs, paddle tail or shrimp imitations along any of the many rock walls should also fool plenty of Bream.
Best time to fish? Good options all year round here, excellent for Winter Bream.
What dream fish might I catch? Big Bream can be found along the rock walls all year but especially during the cooler months, and there are some big Jewfish here too.
Look for the bay on Riverside Drive, a great calm spot to swim with the kids or fish the open river near by, with a playground as well.

Fly Fishing All fish, whether they be saltwater or freshwater species, can be targeted on fly. All saltwater species from Whiting to Marlin are taken on fly and likewise all freshwater species will take a fly. Many anglers are looking for a new challenge and as a result, fly fishing with its diverse equipment and complex techniques is attracting huge interest. Fly fishing is booming In the Coffs Coast region. Australia’s leading fly fishing brand as well as Australia’s largest on-line fly fishing discounter are both based in the Coffs Harbour region. Coffs Coast Fly Fishing Club brings together the local fly fishing community with an open invitation to all locals and visitors to the region. Check them out on-line. If you would like to start fly fishing there’s even an Internationally Accredited Fly Casting Instructor based in the region that can get you up and running. The Coffs Coast region is blessed with beautiful headlands and coved beaches. The estuaries fed by the creeks and rivers that flow from the hinterland offer fly anglers a wide range of fishing locations and species to target. The Coffs Coast area is unmatched when it comes to the range of species available when considering the landbased, inshore and off-shore options in the region. Beginning at Red Rock in the north, to 54
FISHING COFFS COAST - 2020
Urunga in the south and inland to Ebor’s trout water in the high west, it would take a lifetime to explore and fish all the locations that are on offer. Saltwater estuaries, small and large along the Coffs Coast are great places to fly fish for species such as Flathead, Whiting, Bream, Trevally and Mangrove Jack, as well as Luderick and Mullet. If you’re new to fly fishing or thinking about buying a fly fishing outfit, the perfect place to start is in an estuary. Flathead readily take a fly and the wide open sand flats are an ideal place for fly fishers of all levels to cast. Experienced fly anglers have plenty of challenging species to target in the area from large sand whiting which will take small weighted flies like Crazy Charlies, to casting surface flies like Dahlberg Divers for Mangrove Jack. You can even fly fish for Luderick with weed flies! Ocean beaches are a challenging location to fly fish and it’s important to achieve adequate casting distances to reach the fish. While every fish swimming in the ocean will take a fly there are certain species that will be easier to get a fly to than others from the beach. Low tide is an ideal time to fish the shallow gutters or the edges of holes which are great places to target Flathead, Bream and Whiting.
Retrieving flies a little faster than you would in the estuary can often be the secret to fooling fish. Casting larger clouser minnows or a squid fly into deep gutters could even reward you with a Mulloway. Fishing steep deep water ocean beaches during times of light swell are the most comfortable spots to fly fish. During summer, cast small whitebait flies along the beaches. In the cooler months target tailor with medium sized flies. Bass locations are peaceful and scenic places to fish throughout the region. Bass fishing is popular from canoes and kayaks as well as from creek banks. Bass love to hold in structure or under waterlilies so try casting surface flies with floating lines in close and retrieve your fly with a splash. If there’s no response on the surface simply change to a sinking fly. There’s a closed season for Bass so check current regulations before you plan your trip. Almost every Bass fisherman these days return caught fish to the water to be caught another day. If you’re already a fly fisher or are planning to start, the Coffs coast region has so much to offer you. Why not give FFI (Fly Fishers International) Instructor Garry Hambly a call on 0412 127 365 and get yourself started in the wonderful world of fly fishing.
Where to go ? Steep beaches with deep water and little or no breaking waves, beaches like Sapphire, Korora or similar. At wide beaches, fish the shallow gutters at low tide.
What’s there ? Every fish along the beaches will take a fly but it’s getting a fly to them that will determine what species you’ll be targeting.
What fish should I target ? Dart and Tailor are the target species from the steep beaches. Flathead will hold in very shallow gutters of wide beaches during low tide.
