Woolgoolga Beach South - Tim Schofield
Woolgoolga Beach South
What is it?
Woolgoolga Beach South is a beach and headland. There is great land based fishing off the beach. The headland is not as easy to access.
Where is it?
The beach is located near the Woolgoolga main street, in front of the surf club.
Stay Safe
Spot a rip current: Rip currents will occur in deeper water, so it’s usually a darker colour compared to the white breaking waves over a sandbank. Because the water is deeper, there will be fewer breaking waves which can give the appearance of a safer spot to swim. What’s there?
There is a kids park close by and also the caravan park.
What fish should I target?
Off the beach target Bream, Whiting and Tailor and from the headland target Snapper and Groper.
Jason O'Brien What bait should I use?
Best bait to use is Beach Worms.
What lures are best?
Lures don’t seem to work as well as bait in this area.
Best time to fish?
The best time to fish here is in the warmer months of Spring, Summer and Autumn. This is a great time of the year for the kids also.
What dream fish might I catch?
There has been some big Whiting and good size Bream caught here. For the kids
Great for kids, safe beach, shallow and no steep drop offs.

as good as it gets
Woolgoolga – affectionately known as ‘Woopi’ – is a pleasant seaside town 25 kilometres north of Coffs Harbour.
The town has the largest regional Sikh/Punjabi population in Australia. The imposing Guru Nanak Sikh Gurudwara (Sikh Temple) is not only the town’s number one landmark, but also the place of worship for the local Punjabi Sikh community, who make up half of Woolgoolga’s population. The temple is open to visitors on weekends.
Bollywood markets and Woolgoolga beach markets, along with the annual CurryFest are other reasons to visit.
Woolgoolga Headland is known as Whale Watch Headland. With some of the best coastal views in NSW, it’s the perfect place to see migrating Humpback Whales pass the coast between May and November. It is truly a magical spot to stop and rest.
About four kilometres inland are Sherwood Nature Reserve and Woolgoolga Picnic Area. Enjoy the two kilometre riverside walk along Woolgoolga Creek through subtropical rainforest to the spectacular waterfall.
Woolgoolga is also home to the fascinating shipwreck, “The Buster”. The Buster was driven ashore and became a total wreck at the mouth of Woolgoolga Lake on March 8, 1893. The wreck is sometimes uncovered during high tides and storms.
Whether your just passing through the area or holidaying on the Coffs Coast, Woolgoolga is one spot you won’t want to miss.
