Take the Plunge! Congratulations to the Clarence Valley community on 10 years of the Plunge Arts & Cultural Festival. It has been a pleasure to watch the festival grow as a part of the Clarence Valley community and I’m looking forward to celebrating the 10th Festival as Mayor. It has been a challenging couple of years, particularly for arts and culture workers, as performances and events have been rescheduled or cancelled. Thank you to the community organisations, businesses and creatives who have rallied to create what promises to be a wonderful celebration of culture in the Clarence. And thanks to the community and visitors to our region for coming out to support the events, watch the shows, attend performances, and participate in a workshop. We have a rich and diverse culture and Clarence Valley Council is proud to support the sector through the annual Plunge Festival. This program contains information on events, exhibitions performances, workshops and more between 1 - 30 April (and a few outside these dates). I hope to see you out and about at a Plunge event during April. Cr Ian Tiley Mayor Clarence Valley Council COVER IMAGE: INSERT NAME, Water Soothes the Soul. How to use this book The plunge festival is a collection of Arts & Cultural events right across the Clarence Valley during the month of April. Also included are some fringe events later in the year so you can take advantage of what’s on offer beyond the festival dates. Events are listed by category and generally in date order with the earliest events first. You’ll find a couple of pages towards the end of the book to make notes about things you don’t want to miss. This book is also online at www.clarence.nsw.gov.au/plunge where you will find most of the links to ticketing or event websites. Workshops can get booked out so make sure you reserve your spot early to avoid any disappointment. Have a wonderful plunge festival!

All events, times, dates, prices are correct at the time of printing and may be subject to change. Be sure to like us on facebook at www.facebook.com/clarencevalleyculture and check regularly for updates on workshops and events.

LINGUA FRANCA: TEXT WORKS FROM THE COLLECTION

RESIST:STANCE! BLAK DOUGLAS & JASON WING

A Lingua Franca is language that is adopted as a common dialect between speakers whose native tongues are different. Words become modified to fill in gaps and overcome language barriers so that people can communicate more freely. This exhibition celebrates language by bringing together works from the collection that feature text.

For a period nearing two decades, Blak Douglas & Jason Wing have been exhibiting politically charged art works. Motivated by the ongoing failure of respective Governments to fully reconcile the historic atrocities inflicted upon First Nations peoples of this continent.

BIRDSONG: ROBERT MOORE

AWAKENINGS: THE MAKING OF THINGS IMPOSSIBLE

Robert Moore has spent the past 20-odd years living in the bush just outside of Grafton, NSW. This exhibition affirms Moore’s fascination with birds; “they are beautiful beings to paint. Wonderful shapes, great colours. When I paint birds, I paint the landscape.”

This exhibition traces the collaborative work between SPRUNG!! and Andrew Christie, through their construction of virtual reality experiences where conceptions of disability visually inhabit the digital space and complicate notions of ablism, mental health and gender expression. From a theatre production at NORPA in Lismore, to exhibited print and video works at Regional Galleries in northern NSW.

MUSIC, DANCE & THEATRE PERFORMANCE

French Café

A SPRUNG!! INTEGRATED DANCE THEATRE PRODUCTION

Saturday 2 April, 6pm Grafton Regional Gallery Courtyard 75 mins (no interval) Join us in a sunset bar for French Café, a dance-theatre cabaret created by the Sprung!! Ensemble. This remount of highly successful shows at NORPA Lismore and the Brunswick Picture House introduces some new characters, drama, and love to the already colourful performance. At French Café there is hope of finding love, even for the most fringe members of 'French' society. Set to a soundtrack of French classics, the characters dance their way through awkward first meetings, the eruption of deep traumas and sensational bring the house down cabaret numbers.

French Café is a sexy soirée that gets bent and ends in high drama.

LIFE DRAWING SOIREE

Creatives need to show and share their work – why not create your own space? We unpack the business of running an artist run initiative. Hear from people who’ve done it and share their experience. Get ideas and make connections – for musicians, artists, artisans, and creatives of all types.

Draw a live model during a relaxed session to music with Linda. You will be guided through some warm up drawing exercises and encouraged to draw what you see. Pastels and charcoal will be available for you explore on paper. A glass of bubbles and nibbles on arrival.

If you like the funny side of life, the peculiar or making things of beauty then this is the place to explore.
