CLARION, Pa., March 18The Clarion Fire and Hose Co., on Wood Street in Clarion, accepted a check for $75,000 March 5 from three Clarion University organizations. “Three members of our community, Clarion University, the Clarion University Foundation, Inc. and the Clarion Students Association, are joining to provide a total contribution of $75,000 to this important Building Fund Campaign,” said Joseph Grunenwald, Clarion university president. Each group had collected approximately $25,000 dollars for the fire company. The groups were approached by the fire department about having a

fund raiser. The fire department responds to emergency calls on campus and off campus. The department’s services benefit the entire student body. Firefighters provide a lifesaving service to the university and to the community. The money raised is being used to help repair damages at the station and to upgrade equipment. Garrett Mincin, chairman of the Clarion Students’ Association Board of Directors and senior at Clarion university, said, “This project will help repair the fire hall as well as the problems with the roof, and in particular, an original historic part of the building that has extensive water damage coming through the bricks on the outside of the building. This is something that

absolutely needs our support. The fire department is here when we need them, and now they need us,” he said The donated funds not only benefit the Clarion community, but the fire department as a whole. The contribution had placed Clarion University on a record for supporting the fire department and also the community. “Together both Clarion University and the Clarion Fire Co. have nearly 300 years of service to the greater Clarion area,” said Grunenwald. He added that even though times are challenging for many, the community should still strive to meet the goals of the campaign so that service can continue. The Clarion Students’ Association receives some of its profits from business

operations, such as the University Book Store; this contribution in particular was made using those resources, said Mincin. The Clarion Fire and Hose Co. is a volunteer fire company, which was founded in 1876, for the campus. In March of that year, the Clarion Fire & Hose Co. No. 1 was officially granted a fire company by petition from the Clarion County Courts, said Dave Walters, the company president. “The Clarion Volunteer Fire Co. is absolutely critical to the fire safety of our students, faculty and staff,” Grunenwald said. “The fire company has served the university well for many years.” Clarion Volunteer Fire Department is one of the only defenses against fire or other emergencies on campus.

CLARION, Pa., March 18It’s 2010, and that means it’s time for the United States government to administer the census. Every 10 years, the federal government and U.S. Constitution mandate a survey of the nation’s people. According to the web site 2010census.gov, a census is distributed to “achieve an accurate assessment of the number and location of the people living within the nation’s borders.” The filling out of the census survey is vital, as it not only helps to determine how the members of Congress are appointed, but even has an effect on the way that $400 billion is distributed among state and local organizations in the United States, according to 2010census. gov. The census aims to “count everybody, count them only once, and count

them in the right place.” The census also serves to provide media outlets with more accurate figures on population that are reliable and relatable. This year’s census has a number of historical significances. The survey is the shortest since its inception in 1790, consisting of 10 questions total. The answers of this survey consist of questions such as age, race, gender, as well as if the individual owns or rents his or her current residence. More detailed socioeconomic questions will be asked of a small section of this group throughout the survey, according 2010.census.gov. Also, the census is accommodating those areas with high populations of Spanish assistance by sending out Spanishlanguage versions of the census survey. The census is also
