Former Clarion Call editor runs for commissioner KELSEY HUEBERT News Editor
Clarion, Pa - A former staff member of The Clarion Call is running for office. Ron Wilshire, a Clarion University alumnus, will be a candidate for one of the three Clarion County Commissioner seats on the ballot Nov. 8. Commissioners serve four-year terms simultaneously. Unlike most previous elections, none of the three incumbent commissioners, Donna Hartle, Dave Cyphert and Tim Reddinger, are running for another term. Two Republican candidates and two Democratic candidates were nominated by voters in the primary election in May. On the Republican ticket, Butch Campbell and Wayne Brosious face off.

the Nov. 8 general election will begin their terms in office Jan. 2, 2012. Wilshire said this election is especially impor-
tant for Clarion County. “The county has to become more involved with economic development,” Wilshire said, “and here,
citizens have the chance to agree with that.” Wilshire said his plan for economic growth is two-pronged. The first, he said, would be to focus on supporting the jobs that are already in Clarion, namely at Clarion University and Clarion Hospital. “Whatever we can do to support them is very important,” Wilshire said. Second, he said he would focus on getting new jobs into the county. “That’s where the marketing of Clarion County is vital,” Wilshire said. “We have such a strong and talented workforce.” The three commissioners, together, are the chief executive office of Clarion County. Their duties include the county’s financial management, veteran’s
affairs, human services and property assessment. Wilshire said he hopes to bring valuable experience to the commissioners’ office. He held the position of assistant vice-president of university relations for Clarion University for 32 years, and served on the Clarion Borough Council for the past 24 years, 14 of those as president. He said his best accomplishment on the borough council was his participation in the remedying of storm water overflow at Clarion’s sewage treatment center. During his undergraduate studies at Clarion University, Wilshire spent three years as features editor at The Clarion Call, and also produced the editorial cartoons for the opinion section.
Kappa Alpha Psi brings national fraternity conference to Clarion for 25th anniversary

Clarion, Pa., - The Clarion University chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity will host the annual C. Roger Wilson Leadership Conference on Oct. 14 and 15 on campus. The first Conference was held during the 50th anniversary of the fraternity in Bloomington, Ind., as an opportunity for undergraduate members to become acquainted with personal leadership styles through the talent resources within the national organization. Keiterez Bynum, an undergraduate member of Clarion’s Mu Phi Chapter of Kappa Alphi Psi, set his sights on bringing the conference to Clarion this year when he was elected to the regional office of Junior Vice Pole March. Traditionally, the conference moves year-toyear throughout various cities and campuses in Ohio, West Virginia and
Pennsylvania. Despite the 40 year existence and 25-year-long national recognition of Clarion’s Kappa Alpha Psi Chapter, the conference has never been held at Clarion. Bynum said that Kappa Alpha Psi, along with its motto “Achievement in Every Field of Endeavor,” has had a long and prosperous tradition of leadership throughout the nation, and locally. Bynum said he thinks many students are not aware of the impact that African-American Greek Letter Organizations have had within our communities, states and nation. “Too often many think of our organizations as steppers, with colors and symbols...but all of the Nine Historical Pan Hellenic Council organizations possess members of national claim, prominence and leadership,” Bynum said.
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity celebrated its centennial anniversary on Jan. 5, 2011, in Philadelphia. Its first presence at Clarion was in 1971, beginning with Paul Forte and nine others. Clarion’s Mu Phi Chapter was officially chartered almost 25 years ago, on Dec. 6, 1986, and is the oldest African-American organization on campus, second to the Black Student Union of Clarion University, chartered 1971. John Lovelace, Clarion University professor and Mu Phi Chapter adviser, said, “Though attitudes have changed, there are still challenges that African-American males still face in areas of education, employment, health and our communities. We have had our challenges as a chapter, and have fought a few battles, but we continue to strive, and grow from experience.”
