Clarion shows support for soldiers KELSEY HUEBERT News Editor

Clarion, Pa. - Out of over 7,000 institutions, Clarion University was selected as one of the top military schools in America for 2010. Using the post 9/11 GI Bill, Clarion’s more than 130 veteran students can earn a degree with all costs covered. At the financial aid office, veterans are treated as independent tax filers, not as dependants, allowing them to receive more financial aid from the state and federal government. Army National Guard Private Andrew Repasky is both a combat engineer and a junior accounting major. Repasky returned to Clarion in September from basic training and advanced individual training at Fort Lenningwood, Mo. “When I got back,” Repasky said, “I’d have to say my work ethic was a lot better.”

Diedri Fishel, the narrator of the PBS documentary “Telling Amy’s Story,” a documentary to help stop domestic violence, spoke at the Hart Chapel Auditorium on Nov. 10. Fishel, a detective in State College, told the story of her background and the events leading up the creation of the documentary. Since 2004, Fishel has been fighting domestic violence and has continued to try to raise awareness of the subject. To achieve that goal, Fishel, under orders of her boss, created a training

program, which she would teach to the officers, government officials and other members of the community throughout Centre County. Fishel said she believes that everyone needs to be informed about the subject. “Why doesn’t somebody just stand up in outrage and say, ‘This is not OK?’” Fishel said. She explained how the officers became angry during their training and started asking why she didn’t leave her husband before it was too late. Fishel said that is not the question at hand. “We need to stop and ask ourselves…

“They excused me from the first week of classes,” Hushon said, “and they talked to my teachers to

help me catch up.” Specialist Ray Sagi is a sophomore criminal justice major and an Army National Guard combat medic, who trained at Fort Jackson, S.C. Sagi said the financial holds on his account that prevented his registration were quickly resolved by the campus student accounts office. “I had holds on my account,” Sagi said, “but it only took one trip, and they took the holds right off.” Repasky said support from his peers means a lot to him. Hushon and Sagi agreed. “Sometimes all it takes is your care and support,” Hushon said. “You’d be surprised;” Repasky said, “a card or letter can mean so much.” “Mailcall was my favorite time of day,” Sagi said. “It reminds you what you’re serving for.” A luncheon in honor of Veterans’ Day will be held at 11:30 a.m. today in Eagle Commons.
