Message from the Founder & Board

Recently,

Dream Foundation Board of Directors met and with sadness accepted Thomas Rollerson’s resignation as President. Dream Foundation’s mission and vision are the result of Thomas’ passion, caring and tireless commitment to advocacy for quality end-of-life care. Under Thomas’ steadfast leadership, Dream Foundation has brought joy, relief, comfort, friendship, community and encouragement to thousands of dreamers and their families facing one of life’s biggest challenges. Dream Foundation marks its 20th anniversary this year. “My role with Dream Foundation, all the dreamers, dedicated volunteers and staff has given my life profound fulfillment and a heart so full of love,” Thomas says. “In these 20 years my heart has been constantly filled with profound moments shared with dreamers; time spent with you witnessing your countless, selfless acts of kindness and compassion; and lifelong friendships made. These are the gifts I will cherish and carry with me forever. I know the power of Dream Foundation’s mission will carry it forward to provide countless dreams in the future.” Thomas continues, “It was important to me to step down as President with Dream Foundation thriving. It is time that I let dreams grow under new leadership and take some time to catch my breath and fulfill some personal and professional dreams. I began this organization to serve as a voice for the voiceless, and I will always continue to serve in advocacy for quality end-of-life care, final wishes and causes to ease the suffering of fellow human beings. “I am proud to have ended every single year since 1994 with a surplus, thereby earning the faith and trust of all of you. Dream Foundation is in sound financial shape with a renewed Charity Navigator 4-star rating, and is poised to continue serving final wishes. I am especially proud that with your support we have kept our founding pledge to never deny a heart’s final wish.

In loving memory of Timothy Scott Palmer, 1962-1994

“I am deeply grateful for the amazing Dream Foundation staff and community that have served this mission all these years. Each of you is a golden thread of the fabric of love that has enabled us to honor the final wishes of thousands of hearts and souls. Only by coming together have we made so many dreams come true, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. “Throughout the past 20 years I have been profoundly humbled in my role as a Dream Maker and advocate for those who fight for their lives. As John Lennon said, ‘You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.’ One may have inspired this organization, however it was built by the love of all of you.”

Dream Foundation has received the Independent Charities of America (ICA) Seal of Excellence. The award goes to charities that have, upon rigorous independent review, been able to certify, document and demonstrate on an annual basis that they meet the highest standards of public accountability, program effectiveness and cost effectiveness. It is estimated that fewer than five percent of charities reviewed meet or exceed these standards.

Dream Backers A Note from Our New Executive Director KISA HEYER I am thrilled to be serving as Executive Director and leading a phenomenal Dream Foundation team as we celebrate our 20th anniversary and look in eager anticipation to the next 20 years. Not only is Dream Foundation poised to have served our 20,000th dream by the end of 2014, we are moving ahead in unprecedented efforts to expand and reinforce our national scope. Soul Food

Thanks to Our Corporate Partners Richard “Dick,” a 77-year-old U.S. Navy veteran from Santa Barbara, Calif., dreamed of bringing life back into the once flourishing vegetable garden he and his wife, Sara, had nurtured together for many years. Dick and Sara had transformed their land into a beautiful and functional space, laying each brick of their patio themselves and growing food for their family. They also preserved and donated any surplus to their local food bank. Dick took pride in nourishing others. Yet, as his end stage esophageal cancer bore down on him, his garden gradually fell into disrepair. For this reason, it was his dream to revive it and provide Sara with a plot she could continue to maintain once he was gone.

Marion, pictured with her daughter, enjoying her new ramp

Dozens of local Carl’s Jr. volunteers, construction and landscaping crews, and Dick’s neighbors, friends and family all came together to help revive the garden. Dick and Sara watched as seeds and bulbs were planted, their new shed took shape and their new fence was assembled—all while they were surrounded by love, support, and hope. Both Carl’s Jr.® and Hardee’s® restaurants belong to parent company, CKE Restaurants, Inc., which is a longtime Dream Foundation corporate Partner in Dreams. In 2013, CKE Restaurants officially expanded its Stars for Heroes™ partnership with Dream Foundation, choosing the organization as a national beneficiary. The Stars for Heroes fundraising campaign harnesses the national reach of both the Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s brands and the generosity of its customers, franchisees and company employees to rally behind the nation’s military families, veterans and communities. Funds raised during the campaign go to assist military heroes through national charity partnerships as well as through select regional charities with the same mission and ties to Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s restaurant communities. Since its creation in 2011, the Stars for Heroes fundraising campaign has raised close to $2 million for military families, communities and veterans. For more information or to donate to the campaign, visit Stars for Heroes on Facebook at www.facebook.com/StarsforHeroes.

Marion, 78, of Rhode Island, dreamt of having a wheelchair ramp installed at her home to increase her mobility and regain access to the outdoors. As long as she could remember, she loved basking in the sunlight of her yard. Surrounded by family, she often enjoyed backyard cookouts— particularly when her grandchildren came to visit. Suffering from terminal dementia and hypertension, Marion gradually became immobile. She grew overwhelmed going up and down her stairs for fear of falling, and eventually stopped going outside. Her dream came true when the ramp was installed and she was once again able to enjoy her outdoor space safely and comfortably. Marion’s dream referral came to us from Gentiva Health Services, a Partner in Dreams since 2001. Since then, Dream Foundation has fulfilled more than 7,000 dream and special needs requests to Gentiva patients from 183 Gentiva Hospice Foundation locations with grants totaling more than $4 million. In 2010, Gentiva Health Services acquired Odyssey Healthcare and its family of companies. Gentiva continues to serve as a major corporate partner, allowing us to further expand our dream program nationwide.

A 78-year-old from California, Linda was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2007. She had been a dedicated social worker, intent and passionate about helping those less fortunate. Faced suddenly with a prognosis of three months or less, Linda knew it was time to focus on her loved ones and make lasting memories with them. Her dream was to relax together in a beach house, enjoying the comfort and tranquility the ocean brings. The most important part of Linda’s family time proved to be the bond that formed between her brother and her son; she found peace in knowing they’d have each other when she was gone. Zach, her 34-year-old son, had diligently taken on the role of caregiver throughout her illness. Now, she knew he’d be cared for, too. Linda’s relaxing beach retreat came true in large part due to the generosity of TelePacific Communications. “She was so incredibly sweet,” said Karen Hallsman, a TelePacific employee who—along with a team of volunteers—delivered Linda’s dream to her home, spent time with her and helped build excitement for the upcoming trip. “She happily modeled the hat and scarves we brought her to wear at the beach, and she was very grateful for everything.”

Telepacifc Dream Hosts in Los Angeles meet dream recipient Linda and present her with her dream.

TelePacific Communications, whose relationship with Dream Foundation dates back to 2003, is a corporate Partner in Dreams that also maintains a successful employee giving program. In 2005, the corporation’s first donation from payroll deductions yielded $30,000. Now, close to 150,000 employees company-wide have given to Dream Foundation through employee giving. TelePacific’s corporate responsibility extends to hands-on volunteerism though dream hosting, where employees like Hallman and her colleagues further enhance the dream experience by hand-delivering dream packages with a hug, a smile and a celebration.

Georgia resident Deborah, 61, suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, had a final wish to experience one of life’s simplest pleasures: dinner out at Olive Garden, the Italian restaurant she’d been eager to eat at, but only ever known from commercials. Financially devastated by costs associated with her illness, Deborah—with the assistance of her Optum™ Palliative and Hospice Care social worker—appealed to Dream Foundation for help. Devoid of family support and therefore considering her caregivers her most treasured relations, Deborah’s dream became even more special when she learned they would be dining with her. The special meal, VIP treatment by the Olive Garden staff and limousine transportation to and from provided priceless memories, while photographs of the gathering captured her favorite moments. “I am humbled by the recognition Deborah’s dream has received,” her social worker said afterward of the media attention it attracted. “I am thankful that you make end-of-life desires memorable and cherished. I applaud you for seeing a vital need and meeting that need with Dream Foundation.” Optum Palliative and Hospice Care became a Corporate Partner in Dreams in 2008 with contributions from its 17 locations nationwide. Since then, Optum has donated more than $200,000 to Dream Foundation and as of February 2014 has referred 135 patients for a dream. Formerly known as Evercare™ Hospice & Palliative Care, more information about palliative care and hospice care provided by Optum can be found at optumhospice.com.

Dreams Come True

A Whale of a Time California resident Joseph “Joe,” a 90-year-old U.S. Navy veteran suffering from end stage pancreatic cancer, dreamed of seeing Ferdinand and the other Beluga Whales at SeaWorld San Diego. Joe had spotted his first beluga in the wild while serving as a Navy pilot in World War II. He was struck immediately by their beauty and grace in the water. When Joe heard that a beluga called Ferdinand was coming to SeaWorld near his granddaughter’s home, he was thrilled and followed the whale’s life story closely. Every time he visited San Diego, Joe would demand a stop at SeaWorld. His granddaughter knew the way to entice him to move closer to her was to purchase season tickets. However, when they arrived weeks later for their first visit to the park, they discovered Ferdinand’s habitat was under construction. Yet SeaWorld came through with a VIP backstage tour. In his final days, Joe was able to meet Ferdinand, touch and feed him. After a lifetime of love and wonder, his dream had come true. Doris and Mickey Mouse became fast friends.

For the Child at Heart Florida resident Doris, 78, was diagnosed with ischemic cardiomyopathy, dementia and seizure disorder. But a child at heart, she dreamt of going to Walt Disney World to eat lunch with Mickey and Minnie. It had been 55 years since she last visited the park, yet it was an adventure that continued to bring her joy after all these years— so much so that she wanted to relive her childhood memories once again. Doris was thrilled to return to the magical environment and went on every ride she could. She visited Mickey Mouse and they look pictures and hugged. Mickey presented Doris with a huge plush toy and signed the foot, a gift she treasured. “The experience was so rewarding. She had the time of her life,” Doris’s caretaker recounts. “She sleeps with her stuffed Mickey and tells everyone around her that her dream did come true.” PARTNER: WALT DISNEY WORLD RESORT

Big Apple Brings Big Fun For 65-year-old Pennsylvania resident Martha and her family, breast cancer had devastated generations of their loved ones. Martha had fought the disease three times before being diagnosed with end stage metastasized breast cancer. Her great-grandmother and grandmother passed away from the illness, and two of her daughters and one granddaughter have been touched by it as well. Yet despite her family’s seemingly constant struggles, Martha dreamt of a getaway to New York City, where she and her daughters could enjoy the museums and see a Broadway show. “It was an incredible experience. I was able to spend precious time with my girls, which was the most important part of my dream,” Martha reminisces. “The highlight was watching Mamma Mia! with my babies. We even went backstage and were able to meet the cast. The primping beforehand— having our makeup done, pictures taken and the limo ride to the theatre—was unbelievable. Thank you so much for caring and understanding how important this was for me.” PARTNERS: GENENTECH, HILTON GRAND VACATIONS CLUB

Richard and his wife on their new love seat.

Love…and a Love Seat 54-year-old Richard, of Montana, was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia and dreamt of owning a reclining love seat so he could sit and hold hands with his wife. Also, since he had been restless and struggled with sleep for more than a year due to his illness, he hoped the chair would allow him to stop disturbing his wife while she tried to sleep. Richard was ecstatic to receive the love seat. The difference in his voice after a good night’s rest was remarkable. His dream provided each of them with the gift of being well rested— something so simple that had been unattainable. The comfortable couch ended up bringing comfort to Richard’s whole family.

Alaska Airlines allowed Eric to fly with his wife and daughter to the special occasion, where they stayed at the amazing waterfront Longboat Key Club Resort. Above & Beyond: A Corporate Partnership at Work Dream Foundation is fortunate to have the active support of individuals and companies across the country that apply their niches, talents and audiences in support of dreams.

Dream Foundation is deeply thankful for the compassionate employees of Genentech who go above and beyond to make the dream experience special for the families we serve. A corporate partner in dreams since 2006, Genentech takes corporate responsibility seriously—allowing its team nationwide to serve as the face of Dream Foundation when we are unable to be there ourselves. As Dream Hosts, Genentech volunteers meet our dreamers and their families in person, hand-delivering their dream packages, answering questions and bearing gifts of flowers, balloons, souvenirs and other surprises meant to enhance the dream experience. Most importantly, the Dream Hosts spend time with the dream recipients, providing company and friendship. Often profoundly impacted by their time together, Genentech Dream Hosts frequently remain in contact with the dreamers for months or even years after the dream has occurred. Since the dream-hosting program first began in 2007, Genentech has engaged 413 volunteers on deliveries and hundreds of others during conferences and meetings. In total, Genentech Dream Hosts have delivered 776 dreams, with 174 in 2013 alone. We often receive feedback from Genentech employees detailing how dream hosting has changed their lives for the better…

An ailing Korean War vet visits his old ship, the Laffey, at Patriots Point

Korean War veteran, 82, granted dying wish to walk deck of old ship Associated Press | March 3, 2013 MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Korean War veteran Gerald Bowman gamely walked up the gangplank to board the ship he had not seen in almost six decades. The 82-year-old is suffering from congestive heart failure with only about a year to live and his dying wish was to walk the decks of the USS Laffey on which he served four years, including three tours off Korea. Wearing a USS Laffey hat, he led reporters through the ship at the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum on Charleston Harbor Friday, stopping by his old bunk and then into the engine room where as a machinist mate he worked, sometimes in sweltering temperatures of more than 120 degrees. He choked up and paused when asked how it felt to be back.

Father and daughter were watching television coverage of the Laffey being brought back to the museum just over a year ago after undergoing $9 million in repairs. “It just came on and he said that’s my ship. He said how he wished he could walk her one more time and he could even show me the bunk where he slept,” Billings said. Bowman said he didn’t know what had become of the ship until he saw the TV coverage. The Laffey got its nickname “The Ship That Would not Die” in World War II when it was attacked in 1945 off Japan. It suffered 103 casualties when hit by four bombs and five kamikaze planes. The vessel and was mothballed after the war but reactivated for Korea.

“I just wanted to come back and see actually what happened to me in my early 20s,” the Elkins, Ark., man said. “I think the bottom line was the four years changed me. I was a different person when I left.”

Bowman’s trip was arranged after Billings contacted the Dream Foundation, a California-based organization granting wishes for adults and their families facing lifethreatening illnesses. Hardees also helped arrange the trip.

His Navy experiences included a 28-day stretch when, from off the Korean coast, the Laffey poured shells at targets on the mainland.

“This is my gift to him,” Billings said. “I think it’s the most wonderful thing in the world.”

He described how the ship would roll from side to side when the guns were fired and how he would go out with a couple other sailors in small wooden boats to clear mines. It had to be done at night, with no lights and no weapons except for knives. The metal from the guns might have exploded the floating mines, he said. “I asked him why he volunteered to do something so dangerous. He said it was because he was 20 years old,” his daughter Kim Bowman Billings said.

“I feel like we got to do something really great for somebody who really needed it,” said Kittredge, who is graduating and hopes to get a job as an auto mechanic. Hull took labored breaths when she hugged the kids and Huff. “There aren’t words to thank someone for giving you freedom to go to the grocery store, laundry. I just want a little independence in the time I have,” she said. PARTNERS: CKE RESTAURANTS HOLDINGS, INC., DELTA AIR LINES

Queens resident Raymond Finerty, who’s battling terminal cancer, gets dying wish to travel to Masters

He lives with his wife, Mary, and daughter, Sheila, in the tidiest brick house you have ever seen, in Maspeth, Queens, and it was quite a place to be Tuesday afternoon, when seven visitors rang the doorbell and presented him with balloons, T-shirts, hats and a cake decorated with a golf ball and a tee and lots of green. The little house has had an acute shortage of good news of late, so here was a welcome respite on a chilly spring day. “Have A Wonderful Trip, Raymond,” the cake said. Raymond Finerty smiled and thanked his visitors and posed for photos. He isn’t much for gushing, his few words coming forth in brief bursts of Brogue. After everybody left, he sat in a dining room chair. “It’s going to be hard to beat. I know that much,” he said. In two weeks, Raymond Finerty and his son, Keith, will be off to Augusta, Ga. to take in the final round of The Masters. Their plane fare, lodging and tickets to the best Sunday in golf come courtesy of the Dream Foundation, the first and largest national wish-granting organization for adults, in partnership with their corporate partners, Genentech, a biooncolology firm, and Shivas Irons Society, a group that celebrates the transformative powers of golf and arranged for the Masters tickets. PHOTO: DIANA BALDRICA

By Eddie Jimenez | March 22, 2013 As he sits in the stands overlooking Auto Club Speedway this weekend, longtime NASCAR fan Danny Mell knows it could be the last time he hears firsthand the roaring engines, smells the burning rubber and sees the checkered flag drop. No matter. Mell, a 57-year-old Fresno man who has terminal lung cancer, is as excited as a child on the night before Christmas about his trip to Fontana.

“I haven’t been to a race in so long, it’s, ‘ Yeah!’ “ Mell said Thursday with a fist pump and a huge smile. Dream Foundation, a nationwide wish-granting organization for adults with life-threatening illnesses, is making Mell’s trip possible. Mell said he is extremely grateful to the foundation and others for fulfilling his dream. “They just don’t know how lucky they’ve made me feel,” he said. At the Carl’s Jr. restaurant near Shaw and Marks avenues in northwest Fresno on Thursday afternoon, Mell received two tickets to Sunday’s Auto Club 400 Sprint Cup race, a $500 check for expenses and a cake frosted like a U.S. flag with a toy race car on it. Toy Program 1 BEHIND THE SCENES OF THE TOY PROGRAM Nearly 40 percent of dream recipients have young children or grandchildren who are coping with the impending loss of a parent/grandparent. Our Toy Program is a national program that supports the needs of the entire family during the most difficult time of their lives. Here is a look at how this special program works:

2

1 Dream Foundation receives donated toys from: Hasbro, JAKKS Pacific, Ty Warner 2 Longtime volunteer, Joyce Joyce Fernandez, spends time each week in our toy storage area carefully selecting age-appropriate toys for each child or grandchild of every dream family. 3 Volunteers carefully gift wrap each toy and write the child’s name on it. Then, they package each family’s toys in to a larger mailing box, which is wrapped in brown shipping paper and decorated with colorful paints. 4 Postage is calculated and the mail carrier visits our office every Friday to pick up these special toy packages ready for shipment.

4

5 These boxes arrive as a surprise on the doorsteps of the dream recipients. The dreamer is then able to open the packages with his/her children, allowing the whole family to share in smiles and joy when illness has brought so much pain.

Flower Empower

Catherine Pickett, Dee Dee Copeland, Grace Copeland

Enormous thanks to Herb & Bui Simon for adopting the Flower Empower program in 2013.

Special to Dream Foundation’s hometown of Santa Barbara, Flower Empower is a volunteer-driven program that delivers hope and compassion—in the form of bouquets—to those in need. In 2013, donated flowers were up 25 percent over prior year with increased delivery days and three more facilities added to the standing 15. There were 8,292 bouquets delivered to hospices, hospitals, care centers and private residences throughout the greater Santa Barbara area—up from 6,000 in 2012. In addition, a large volunteer force came together during November and December to deliver 1900 donated orchids—courtesy of Westerlay Orchids—for the holidays. We are proud to share two more significant stories that happened during the year!

FLOWER EMPOWER CELEBRATES LARGEST VOLUNTEER EFFORT TO DATE The NORCAL Fun ‘N Sun California Floral Convention was held July 2013 in Santa Barbara. Local Carpinteria-based growers suggested all flowers from the convention be donated to Flower Empower. This led to the largest volunteer effort in Flower Empower history! Dozens of Flower Empower volunteers loaded more than one million donated stems in to vans, trailers and trucks; the flowers then made their way to Florabundance (our 2013 Flower Distributor of the Year), where several dozen volunteers then spearheaded a massive bouquet-creating operation. In total, more than 1,000 bouquets were created and delivered to facilities, individuals and nursing homes through the Santa Barbara region, brightening the day of so many. Thank you to Florabundance for the use of their vehicles and facilities, helping ensure the success of the event!

FLOWER EMPOWER AFTERNOON OF EMPLOYEE VOLUNTEERISM AT DECKERS OUTDOOR CORPORATION In November 2013, Dream Foundation’s longtime local corporate supporter, Deckers Outdoor Corporation, invited Rosy the Flower Empower van to their corporate office for an afternoon of employee volunteering. Buckets of donated flowers were unloaded from the van, worktables were set up in the parking lot and the Flower Empower tent provided shade for the team. Employee volunteers then went to work trimming thorns off roses, creating beautiful bouquets and carefully placing each one in to a secure plastic sleeve for transport. Members of the Deckers team enjoyed a few hours of heartfelt volunteering during their workday and the next day their gifts of love were hand-delivered to those in need in the Santa Barbara community.

“If you hadn’t helped us, I would have gone to the Big Island alone. I couldn’t tell you how much I would have missed out on. I wouldn’t have seen the laughter on my children’s faces or their excitement at exploring a new world with me.” – DA L E,

“My grandma is on such a small budget due to her health costs and would not have been able to buy the toys for Brooklyn. She had such a sparkle in her eyes and my daughter loves the little Elmo so much. Thank you so much for giving us this wonderful memory and these gifts my daughter and I will treasure knowing they came from Grandma.” – A N GEL A , GRANDDAUGHTER OF DREAM RECIPIENT, GENE

“I can’t thank you enough for your thoughtfulness in seeing my husband and I were able to get to our granddaughter’s wedding.” – M A R Y,

Events YEAR-ROUND

National Charity League For the second year, the Santa Barbara chapter of National Charity League (NCL) selected Dream Foundation as its supporting charity. NCL is a national, philanthropic membership organization made up of mothers and daughters who serve in their communities. This year NCL completed more than 1,100 volunteer hours making bouquets for Flower Empower; wrapping and puffy painting hundreds of boxes of toys for the children of dream recipients as part of the Toy Program; and scrapbooking photos and stories of completed dreams. The mother/daughter team of Bella and Debbie Darke (pictured) even delivered a dream package to local dream recipient, Phil, along with his caregiver and Dream Foundation’s Vice President of Program, Barbara Schoch. We could not do what we do without the dedicated hours NCL has and continues to give. Thank you to Valentina Castleberg, the 2014 liaison and all the incredible women and girls of NCL.

Get Hitched, Give Hope

For the third year, Seattle’s most philanthropic wedding professionals came together with more than 500 brides and grooms to support Dream Foundation. Held at the beautiful Four Seasons Hotel Seattle, the 5th Annual Get Hitched, Give Hope event (GHGH) brought the Art Deco era of Paris to life with sweet pastries, shoe shining stations and even a French lounge singer straight out of the 1920s—as well as lively silent and live auctions. With their hair in pin curls and donning dapper hats, the GHGH team announced that—with the help of volunteers, generous vendors and sponsors and the success of numerous fundraising efforts—they had raised more than $100,000 to benefit Dream Foundation and another Seattle-based charity. Thank you Christopher Smith and Holly Patton and the entire Get Hitched, Give Hope team! www.gethitchedgivehope.com
