A Message from the Founder

Herein:

Board of Directors 2013

so many faces…so many families…so many hearts that entrust us with their hopes and dreams. Dreams that come true because of you.

Richard Burnham Mansfield, TX Co-Founder, Odyssey HealthCare, Chairman

This newsletter celebrates the beauty that unfolds from acts of kindness, love and compassion. We are blessed to be part of this humbling work. You’re also a big part of this blessing, and thereby the blessing our families feel during their most challenging days.

Luke Ebbin Santa Barbara, CA Record Producer, Mechanism Strategic Music Consultants

J. Paul Gignac Santa Barbara, CA

In setting our goals, we are inspired by supporters like you who entrust us with your investment in dreams. We are motivated by the individuals who honor us with their heart’s final wish—people like my buddy, Malachi, whose mother began nursing school when she learned she had stage 4 cancer. I had the privilege of taking Malachi to the circus, where he said to me, “My mother is going to be so happy.” “Why?” I asked. “Because I’m having fun.” At the circus, Malachi won a prize. I was unsure why— with all the stuffed lions and dragons available—this 8-year-old chose a pink flower… until we returned to his mom. It was meant for her.

Dream recipient, Tamika, and her son, Malachi.

The work we do allows moments for parents to be parents and witness their children being children. It gives children profound memories to hold on to in years ahead.

• Nearly 2,500 dreams served. A 13% increase in processed applications over 2011. • 5,925 bouquets delivered as part of Flower Empower, up 40% over 2011. • 1,322 children of dream recipients received toys, up 54% over 2011.

As we consider our future, we are reminded of the wise words of supporter, Chad Dreier: “Bigger is not better. Better is better.” It’s a statement that reaffirms our founding philosophy as well as our objectives for 2013. However, we continue to depend on your support; our service area and demand is (indeed) getting bigger. Much bigger. I have one wish for YOU in the year ahead: to join the Dream Team. A minimum donation of $25 is all it takes. Please use the enclosed envelope to impart your gift.

In earning Charity Navigator’s four star rating Dream Foundation has demonstrated exceptional financial health, outperforming most of its peers in its efforts to manage and grow its finances in the most fiscally responsible way possible.

“We are so grateful you had a photographer come out to do family portraits. Cindy made sure she wore her ‘Marine Mom’ shirt, since she was ever the proud Marine Corps Mama. We now have amazing memories to hold dear and cherish for a lifetime.” – K a se y,

“Janet had been mustering all her remaining energ y to go on the trip and make our time together special. The moment we returned home, she declined faster than anyone imagined, and passed away just a week later. We now know your efforts to expedite the dream were heroic, in that the speediness was what made it even possible.” – A l l e y n,

Basic Needs Fulfilled The dreams showcased

on these pages come from men and women who have been financially devastated by medical bills while also facing terminal illness. Requests like theirs comprise 55 percent of the dreams we serve. When the challenges of daily life prohibit the ability to see past basic necessities, a wheelchair ramp, a recliner, eyeglasses, a scooter or a laptop are dreams, simple in nature yet grand in impact. Recently, we received a letter from a woman requesting a couple months of cable service for her television. “Cable?” you may wonder. “How is that a dream?” It’s a fair and common question with respect to the grand association we often apply to the word “dream.” But consider her circumstances: She is bedbound. Her pain and condition have limited her ability to concentrate on things like reading, sewing or conversing with the few visitors she receives. She has eliminated all costs associated with anything more than keeping food in the refrigerator and a roof over her head. She has been watching the same VHS-recorded shows repeatedly, as her main form of entertainment. Television is her window to the world. For her, cable is—most definitely—a dream.

A recliner “Thank you for giving me a scooter for Alexzander and I to get around to 7-Eleven. Remember, you do make a difference in our lives. A Slurpee is just the beginning of our adventures.” – M A R Y LO U,

Hobart maneuvering around his garden on his new scooter.

A scooter “I had been slowing down more and more, and finding it difficult to walk with my walker. All of the sudden, my dream of a scooter was being realized! I can now eat at my table, do puzzles, and work in my vegetable garden again. I had been consigning myself to a less vigorous life, but now I can move around and smell the roses.” – HOBA RT,

A gift card

– S COTT,

“I am thankful for the gift card I was given. I didn’t have the tools needed for simple repairs, but now I do. I was like a kid in a candy store.” – M A RTIN,

“I cannot express what a life-changer this simple thing is for me. In and of itself, the chair fills a genuine physical need for basic comfort. Yet the gift does more. It fills an emotional and psychological need that goes beyond words. Dream Foundation filled the void and gave me the sense that all is not lost. Now I get to feel the warmth of your giving… and that, too, is a priceless gift!”

The profound effect of a “simple” dream A wheelchair ramp “Having a wheelchair ramp makes me feel wonderful. I am able to attend church once or twice a month now because I have a ramp to help me exit my home.”

A television “The television you sent me is wonderful. I can now see the ticker tape. It’s fantastic! The journey I’m on is a tough one and you have made it better.” – M A SON ,

A laptop Rhonda awaiting her next chat with the grandkids.

“Sometimes it’s not one big dream that needs to be granted, but a dozen small daydreams that can change a person’s life. Your generous gift made a lot of small daydreams come true for me. My daily life is so much better because of it. I now have a new skillet, cookie sheets, kitchen towels, potholders and a mop that have replaced the peeling, rusting, torn and broken ones I had. I can see now to cook, sew and write because I have a pair of glasses. All these small things have added up to make a big difference in my life.” – C A ROL ,

dream recipient

“As my illness has progressed, it has become increasingly difficult to leave home. My daughter lives in another state. I miss her terribly and have missed watching my grandchildren grow up. My new laptop has given me the chance to ‘see’ my grandchildren for the first time in almost two years.” – RHONDA ,

dream recipient

A washer and dryer “I appreciate my new washer and dryer so much. They are so convenient, do such a great job, and—best of all—it doesn’t take all day to dry my clothes anymore. The way you help people is the light at the end of the tunnel.” – DONN A ,

Felix leads the San Francisco 49ers huddle after practice. He was invited into the huddle, where he roared with his new friends his favorite 49ers slogan, “WHO’S GOT IT BETTER THAN US? NOBODY!!”

First Visit to the Beach Joseph, a 49-year-old grandfather, was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer in 2010. After battling the disease for two years, the chemotherapy failed and he ran out of treatment options. He dreamed of a Father’s Day weekend getaway to San Diego, where he’d see the ocean for the first time. He, his daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren were welcomed by the San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina, where Joseph was able to relax and relish in the constant view of the water he always longed to see. The family visited SeaWorld San Diego and had their first-ever professional photo shoot. “Thank you for letting me see my grandchildren play in the ocean,” Joseph said. “Our first time at the beach was even better because we were all together.”

A loyal San Francisco 49ers fan, 22-yearold Felix dreamed of meeting the NFL team and attending a home game at Candlestick Park. “Knowing I have cancer does not stop me from my hopes and dreams,” he said. The young man had been a survivor since August 2008, successfully battling Ewing’s Sarcoma. Then two years later, he was diagnosed with a rare form of lung cancer. Amid treatments and hospitalizations, Felix had not missed a single, televised 49ers game in more than four years. Just in time for the team’s appearance in the 2013 NFC Divisional game, Felix’s dream came true. Thanks to longtime partners, the San Francisco 49ers and its nonprofit community funding extension, Felix enjoyed a VIP tour of the training facility and received an autographed jersey and other memorabilia. He met the players, ate lunch with Coach Jim Harbaugh, watched practice from the sidelines, and joined the huddle. Two days later, Felix rejoined the team on the field once more, wishing them luck in that night’s NFC Divisional game against the Green Bay Packers. With Felix in the stands, his team won the game and advanced one step closer to the Super Bowl.

Dreams Come True Melissa “Melly,” 20, was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma and had only weeks to live. Growing up in Southern California, she’d always had a special connection to the beach— especially the golden expanse along the property of the iconic Hotel del Coronado. She remembered being healthy, strong and carefree… walking along the sand with her family, swimming in the ocean with friends. When her time became limited and “bad” days began outnumbering the “good,” Melly dreamt of returning to her special place, creating new memories, and—for the first time—actually staying at the beautiful hotel. For two nights she and her family enjoyed oceanfront rooms and a private bonfire, among other special goodies. They received a sunset photo shoot and an abundant gift basket with certificates to Melly’s favorite restaurants. Her Coronado weekend far surpassed her wildest dreams, giving her and her loved ones the chance to let go of their pain and heartache… and enjoy a special time together. OTHER Partner: KSL Resorts

Prior to his diagnosis with Ewing’s Sarcoma in 2009, Christian, a 39-year-old father of two, had been active and healthy with a passion for surfing. Over the course of three years, his disease had spread to his lungs and became inoperable. Faced with a limited prognosis, he had a final dream to fulfill a promise he’d made to his family years before: taking them to the beautiful waters and perfect conditions of Maui to snorkel, surf and have happy times together. The young man’s dream came true thanks to round-trip airfare from Alaska Airlines and a stay at a relative’s home on the island. “Cancer affects our entire family, not just me,” Christian said on their return. “We’d all been under enormous stress. The trip brought my children together and allowed them to grow, change and appreciate one another in a way that was impossible before.”

Melly embraced by the love and comfort of her family.

A single mother of four and grandma to one, 46-year-old Maria had been battling breast cancer when—despite multiple chemotherapy treatments—she developed brain metastasis as well. Devoted to her family, Maria worked tirelessly to make sure their days and routines were as normal as possible. Her one dream was for a special getaway full of happy moments and the opportunity to ignite her children’s passion for creativity by showing them a new city and wild animals from around the world. They enjoyed several relaxing days by the ocean, thanks to Dana Horne Vacation Rentals, and fun outings to SeaWorld San Diego and San Diego Zoo. Her favorite part of the trip was watching her children enjoy themselves and getting a break from her treatment. Maria said, “Thank you for giving us so much. It was the chance to be free from hospitals and to leave memories for my children.” OTHER Partner: HASBRO

Maria emanates pure joy.

While fighting a losing battle with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, 19-year-old Amee dreamed to escape her daily struggles and get away to the coast with one person who had stood by her side since her initial diagnosis four years earlier—her loving boyfriend, Jamey.

“This time last year I was told I wouldn’t live to make it out of the hospital again, but because of the opportunities you gave me, my life turned around. Everything from the set of Law & Order: SVU was a highlight. I couldn’t believe I was actually there. I’m still dealing with most of the same medical problems and I’m not out of the woods, but I feel so much more fulfilled.”

The young couple decided Santa Barbara would be the perfect destination—and Dream Foundation’s founding community came together to embrace them. The Bacara Resort & Spa was the perfect backdrop to warm beaches and stunning sunsets. Amee’s wish to wear a beautiful gown and have a romantic dinner came true thanks to David’s Bridal, which outfitted her for the occasion. “I felt like a celebrity with all the pampering,” she wrote afterwards. “I’d never felt more beautiful.” Their memories were preserved with a professional, sunset photo shoot on the beach. She continued, “Thank you for making this beautiful weekend a perfect getaway for us.”

Above & Beyond: A Corporate Partnership at Work Dream Foundation is fortunate to have the active support of individuals and companies across the country that apply their niches, talents and audiences in support of dreams. Funds raised during the campaign go to assist military heroes through national charity partnerships as well as through select regional charities with the same mission and ties to Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s restaurant communities. Since its creation in 2011, the Stars for Heroes fundraising campaign has raised close to $2 million for military families, communities and veterans. Dream Backers

What motivates compassion? What inspires service? At Dream Foundation we have learned it is often a very personal experience that spurs individuals to support our programs. Perhaps it’s witnessing the life-affirming impact of palliative care with a parent or loved one. Or maybe it comes from caregiver perspective... seeing firsthand how the simplest resources can improve one’s last days. The soul of Dream Foundation is comprised of the voices who support us and back us. We want to share their words with you.

“I support Dream Foundation because I have a heart for hospice care. Dream Foundation provides an additional depth of service and support to those with lifethreatening illnesses. Also, Thomas and his caring staff are extremely dedicated to the foundation’s mission.” Richard Burnham Board of Directors, Dream Makers Circle member and contributor

“I do this because if there is anything—just anything—I can do to bring some measure of joy, happiness and good memories to someone who truly needs it, I feel a huge amount of satisfaction.” Pete Hammond Dream Makers Circle member and contributor

“I have been involved with Dream Foundation for 12 years and have personally seen the happiness a dream recipient and her family felt when they received her dream. They never would have experienced this final wish if it hadn’t been for Dream Foundation.” Vienna Salazar Dream Makers Circle member and contributor

Tempe students work on van to grant terminally ill woman’s wish By Dianna M. Náñez | May 24, 2012 Most years, Larry Huff teaches students in his high school auto mechanic class about engines, alternators and transmissions. This spring, Huff said his Corona High School students got a “lesson in humanity.” A couple of months ago, Huff’s phone rang. It was a call that he said has changed his students’ and his outlook on life. The Dream Foundation, which grants wishes for people facing life-threatening illnesses, got wind of Huff’s high school auto class and thought, if the Tempe teacher was willing, his class might be the key to making an Apache Junction woman’s dream come true. Huff said his first thought—before the foundation explained what 62-year-old Vickie Hull’s dream was—What could a retired military man turned high school auto teacher possess that would help grant a stranger’s wish? Hospice of Arizona referred Hull to the California-based foundation after she was given six months to live due to end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, one of the most common lung diseases. Hull’s wish was simple: fix her broken down van so that she could remain as independent as possible during her final months. The vehicle is her lifeline for medical appointments, the grocery store and other chores that would seem mundane to most but mean the world to Hull. Huff was blown away by the opportunity. “Oh, yeah, I said, ‘Yes.’ To think my kids could help. I could help her with something she needs so badly. It was pretty special.” But he had no idea what a challenge re-

pairing her old Dodge Caravan would be. He realized the first hurdle when he met Hull in March to pick up the van from her home. The transmission, which needed to be rebuilt or replaced, was not coming out the top of the engine. But he took one look at Hull. Her eyes lit up when he came to pick up her van. He was inspired to get the vehicle running again. “I made a commitment, and I was going to keep it,” he said. About a month into the project, the class thought they were done. The transmission was in, and the engine was running. Nico Kittredge, 18, was especially pleased with the accomplishment, Huff said. Kittredge, an Eagle Scout, volunteered to stay after school to help Huff get the van back to Hull. But when they took the van for a spin, it would not shift properly. Huff called a Phoenix business, Automatic Transmission Experts, for advice. “They were so great,” Huff said. “When they heard about what we were doing, they said, ‘Bring it on in and we’ll look at it for free.’ “ The business fixed the transmission, and Huff took it back to fix the air conditioning and get the van in tip-top shape. On Tuesday, the students’ last day of class, Hull was coming to pick up her baby…

The second woman was Connie, 53, of Fort Morgan, Colo., whose wish was to come to Las Vegas with her best friend of 10 years, Loretta Dunn, a trip they had long talked about, a celebration of friendship.

Teen fighting cancer sees wish granted June 7, 2012 MORENO VALLEY, Calif. — A Moreno Valley teenager fighting cancer had a wish fulfilled this week. Representatives of the Dream Foundation and corporate partner, 72andSunny, visited the home of Dominic, who wanted a computer so he can continue his college coursework in computer-aided drafting from home. Jennifer Hires of Dream Foundation helps Deaja Goodrich, one of Dominic’s brothers, unpack a computer given to Dominic, wearing cap at botton left. The foundation fulfilled the Moreno Valley 18-year-old’s wish to continue his college coursework in drafting from home. Dominic had taken a leave of absence as he battles brain cancer. Dominic took a leave of absence because of his illness. He has been diagnosed with end-stage brain cancer and given a prognosis of six months or less, according to the foundation.

“This has changed my life from a good dream to a nightmare,” he wrote in an application letter to the foundation. With regular hospital visits, limited mobility, strained vision and fatigue, Dominic acknowledged it would be easy to neglect his studies, but instead wrote, “I’m not gonna let this battle stop me from my dream!” PARTNERS: Genentech, 72andSunny, Activision

Bill and wife Sarah had always planned to take their daughters Riley, 9, and Payton, 7, but wanted to do it at a time when they were old enough to appreciate and enjoy it. Huizar, 21, is a sophomore studying architectural engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. He said the works of Frank Lloyd Wright, architect of the famous home built over a waterfall, inspired his career choice. Huizar received a private tour of the house, built between 1936-38 as a vacation home for the Edgar J. Kaufmann family of Pittsburgh. A special thank you to the wonderful vendors who donated their time and resources to the event: Adesso Atelier, Camille K, Jessica Foster Confections, Jules Allen, Pascale’s Kitchen and Solvang Bakery. YAC’s commitment to fundraising for dreams extended throughout the Santa Barbara community and on the following high schools campuses: Bishop Garcia Diego, Dos Pueblos, Laguna Blanca, Santa Barbara and San Marcos.

Dream Foundation held its 11th Annual Celebration of Dreams event at the Bacara Resort & Spa in Santa Barbara. Special recognition was paid to the families of Dream Foundation, as well as Nigel Lythgoe and Katy Perry, who were honored with the prestigious Founder’s Humanitarian Award. Their awards were presented by Randy Jackson and Jane Lynch, respectively.

Flower Empower has grown exponentially in the past year, due in large part to the generosity of a strong and growing volunteer base, including UC Santa Barbara’s Sigma Omega Nu and Alpha Kappa Delta Phi, among others. Special to Dream Foundation’s hometown of Santa Barbara, Flower Empower is a volunteer-driven program that delivers hope and compassion—in the form of bouquets—to those in need.

In 2012, donated flowers were up 20 percent over prior year— with increased delivery days and four more facilities added to the standing 15. There were 5,920 bouquets delivered to hospices, hospitals, care centers and private residences throughout the greater Santa Barbara area—up from 5,000 in 2011. In addition, a large volunteer force came together during December to deliver 958 donated orchids—courtesy of Westerlay Orchids—for the holidays. In May 2012, Flower Empower received a new delivery van, gifted to the program from the Santa Barbara community. Thank you to Tom & Diane Brown, Andrew & Ivana Firestone, Monica Fulton, Harold & Annette Simmons, and Chris Williams for adopting the program in 2012; and to Herb & Bui Simon for adopting it in 2013.

Toy Program

A special acknowledgment to the compassionate, young artists (and their teachers and directors) at Adams Elementary School, All Saints by the Sea Parrish Preschool, Bright Start Child Development Center, Carmel River Elementary School (Carmel, California), Cleveland Elementary School after school program, El Camino Elementary School, Girl Scouts of California’s Central Coast troop #50614, Girls Inc., Goleta, The Howard School, Laguna Blanca School, Little Angels Preschool, Mary Belle McCorkle Academy of Excellence (Tucson, Arizona), Marymount of Santa Barbara, Monte Vista Elementary School, Montecito Family YMCA, Montecito Union School, National Charity League, Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, Santa Barbara Middle School, St. Raphael School, Washington School and Dream Foundation’s Youth Advisory Council, for the hundreds of beautifully decorated cards they’ve made to accompany each bouquet delivered. Flower Empower could not exist without our team of fabulous supporters: B&H Flowers, Botanik, Chocolats du CaliBressan, Domingo Farms, Ever-Bloom, Florabundance, The Himovitz Family, Maximum Nursery, Myriad, Trader Joe’s, Valley Flowers Inc., Westerlay Orchids and Westland Floral.

Approximately 100 elves of all ages came together during December in two festive efforts to wrap, package and prepare to mail more than 200 toys to the children of dream recipients, and decorate handmade cards. These workshop events brought together Santa Barbara area school children and their families, National Charity League (NCL) members, volunteers, Santa Claus, and Dream Foundation supporters, Katy Perry and John Mayer. Due in part to the success of the workshops, 2012 saw a considerable increase in the number of children impacted by the Toy Program, with 1,322 served (up from 861 in 2011). The Toy Program provides age-appropriate toys for dream recipients to give their children, allowing them to share happiness and smiles when illness has brought so much pain. Thanks to the generosity of Hasbro, Inc., Dream Foundation receives thousands of donated toys each year to send to families nationwide. A special acknowledgment to JAKKS Pacific, Inc. whose first-time donation of 300 toys arrived on Christmas Eve.
