get up to speed on growth plates Your children’s skeletons are still growing, and that puts them at risk for an injury you can no longer experience: a growth plate fracture. Yesterday, during a rec league basketball game, your 10-year-old son was backpedaling on defense when he tripped over another player’s foot and fell to the court on his left arm. It’s been hurting ever since. The cause of your son’s pain could be a fracture of a growth plate, a tissue structure certain bones have during childhood and adolescence that helps them develop properly as the skeleton grows. Here are several things you need to know about these temporary, but important, parts of bones: 1. Growth plates aren’t found throughout the body. Only the body’s long bones—such as the femur, tibia and fibula in the legs, the radius and the ulna in the forearms, and the metacarpals (the bones that connect the wrist to the ends of the fingers)—have growth plates. Most of these bones have two growth plates, one at each end. Growth plates produce bone tissue and help bones assume their proper size and shape. 2. Growth plates are the weak links in the skeleton’s chain. No part of a young skeleton is more vulnerable to injury than growth plates, according to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS). Fractures can happen to any growth plate, but the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has found they most commonly affect those of the metacarpals. 3. By high school, growth plates are gone—or on their last legs. When children reach skeletal maturity, growth plates, which are made of cartilage, harden into bone. Girls reach the end of skeletal development first, typically between the ages of 13 and 15, and boys usually achieve the milestone between the ages of 15 to 17, according to the Nemours Foundation. Boys experience twice as many growth plate fractures as girls because their growth plates stick around longer, according to NIAMS. 4. Damage can be sudden or slow. A scenario like your son’s—an acute injury that takes place during a contact sport—is how most growth plate fractures occur, but they can also develop as a result of overuse. 5. If a fracture happens, healing is on the clock. Young bones’ ability to heal swiftly can be derailed if you don’t act fast. Growth plate fractures that linger for days without treatment could heal improperly and affect the bone’s development. If your child complains of pain,
6
swelling or weakness in the affected area, ensure they see their doctor—who may refer them to an orthopedic surgeon—as soon as possible.
6. With treatment, most growth plate fractures turn out just fine.
Physicians diagnose growth plate fractures based on a physical exam and imaging. Simple fractures may only need a cast to keep the bone still while the growth plate heals. More complex injuries may require surgery to realign the damaged portions and secure them with screws or metal plates. Physical therapy may be necessary after a growth plate fracture heals, especially after surgery.
Building a Solid Foundation The future of your children’s bones starts now. Youth is the time to lay a foundation for decades of healthy bones. Typically, bone mass reaches its peak—the time when bones are strongest—when adults are in their late 20s. The stronger and denser bones are at that time, the better prepared they’ll be to weather the natural decline of bone mass that comes with age. Take the following actions today—and every day—to position your children for a lifetime of bone health: • Break a sweat together. A morning dance party, midday hike or afternoon kick-around with the soccer ball are great ways for your children to get the weight-bearing exercise their bones need to build strength. • Prioritize safe play. If your children play sports, be sure they have the right gear to protect their bones. • Serve bone-building snacks. Calcium-rich yogurt, cheese and almonds, as well as peanut butter on whole-wheat bread—both good sources of magnesium—are tasty and beneficial to the bones. • Sneak in bone-friendly foods when you can. Do your children love orange juice with breakfast? Be sure it’s fortified with vitamin D. Slip kale, which is full of vitamin K, into smoothies and salads. Thousands will once again turn out for this award-winning event. It's a chance for kids to make environmental arts and crafts, play in the Bubble Zone, and even interact with live butterflies in the Butterfly House.
There will be two stage shows at this year's festival, a dog stunt-show featuring The Canine Stars, and comedy/ ventriloquist Steve Brogan. There will be three performances by each act throughout the course of the day.
Oak Grove's Butterfly Festival was honored earlier this year at the Southeast Festivals and Events Association's (SFEA) Kaleidoscope Awards in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. The Oak Grove event competed against numerous community events from five states and brought home a bronze SFEA Kaleidoscope Award for Best Children's Programming. It was Oak Grove Tourism's 3rd win in a row. “This year's Butterfly Festival is coming up on September 28th,” Oak Grove Tourism's Britnee Ohman said. “This is our 11th annual celebration, and it will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. At 4 o'clock we will do a live release of more than 1,400 butterflies, our biggest release ever.”

Festival Director, Britnee Ohman “This is a unique event that doesn't break the bank,” Ohman said. “It's something fun to do with the entire family, and all of our stage shows are kid friendly, so it's completely appropriate for all ages. It's a great opportunity to learn some things, and have fun while you're at it. I would love to see as many families as possible come out and enjoy this great day.
“And, the butterfly release itself is always amazing. We always read a Native American poem just before we let them go. It's a beautiful sight to see, that many butterflies in one area. When they are first released they land on you and you can interact with them. F E ATU R E “I wanted to start the program to take control of my health and I felt safe because it is medically supervised. I was having headaches daily, stomach issues and constant fatigue. After 1 week on the HCG program, I instantly felt a change in my body. I all around feel fantastic. I haven’t had a headache since I started the program and I’ve lost 43 pounds in 45 days. I have the energy to work full time in the restaurant environment and keep up with my kids.” -Steve Clarksville, TN
Riverside Spine & Physical Medicine’s Solution to Dieting Although most recognize HCG as a naturally occurring hormone produced during pregnancy, recent research has found that this hormone is effective for promoting natural weight loss as well. When combined with a nutritionally balanced low-calorie diet, these supplements help to trigger the brain to burn stored fat, melting off the pounds. By using HCG in combination with a specific meal plan and medical supervision, food cravings can be reduced, there is an increase in fat burning and a substantial difference in how much more energized you feel during the day. Just from stored body fat alone, the body can burn up to 3500 calories per day. By maintaining a high energy level, HCG helps to support this process, turning your body into a fat-burning machine. On average, patients lose 30 pounds in 30 days. While not every patient looks exactly the same after completing the program, the weight loss results for these patients are typical.
By Christina Chittenden
When done under medical supervision, the HCG program is clearly the safest, most effective and successful weight loss program ever developed and will prove to be the answer for those who want to lose weight and feel better, and anyone suffering from obesity. If you’ve struggled with the infamous yo-yo dieting in the past, the Weight Loss program at Riverside Spine and Physical Medicine is the perfect solution for you. This program is a customized medical approach to not only losing weight but maintaining that loss – for good. The wellness team at Riverside helps to provide nutritional counseling and lifestyle advice in conjunction with HCG injections. Ultimately, this program aids patients in adopting newer, healthier habits that support an active lifestyle and long-term weight loss success. Their patient-proven results speak for themselves!
“We are both long time patients of Dr. Allen and the great staff at Riverside, so the trust was there…and it’s medically supervised. The results are undeniable. We lost 30 pounds (each!) in the first 30 days on the program! The best part is, you don’t have to exercise or work out to lose the weight. Just follow the program. It’s amazing! To date, as a couple, we’ve lost a total of 112 pounds of fat. We are encouraging people who want to look and feel great to do what we did and talk to Riverside Medicine to see if they can help you too!” -John & Sherri Clarksville, TN
Clarksville native, Sabrina, was feeling quite discouraged after steroids and other medications she was taking for an auto immune disease had caused her to gain weight. Nearing her 50th birthday, she decided it was time to take control of her health and sought the HCG Medically Supervised Weight Loss Program at Riverside Spine and Physical Medicine. “Before the program, I thought my eating habits were okay, but the HCG Weight Loss program helped me learn that foods work in combinations and some are healthier than others,” she said. After only one month on the program, she lost 28 pounds. “I have loved watching the pounds disappear!” she added. Sabrina is celebrating her weight loss success by shopping for new clothes. “After losing some of the unwanted weight I have felt more alive and have a different mindset on food! I enjoy going down a size in my clothes and I am more determined to keep losing until I am at a healthy weight for me!” Call Riverside Spine & Physical Medicine in Clarksville today at 931-5429420 for a consultation and one of their health care specialists will be happy to answer any questions, issues, or concerns.

The concert is excited to feature the famous Regi Wooten as this year’s headliner. Regi’s music career began at the age of five, when he and his brothers, Roy and Rudy, were pulled on stage to dance with James Brown. When Regi was nine, he started teaching his younger brother, Victor, how to play the bass and his other brother, Joseph, to play the keyboards. Immediately, the Wooten Brothers Band was formed featuring Regi on the ukulele, Roy on drums, Rudy on saxophone, Joe on keys and Victor on the bass. At that time, Regi was 10, Roy 9, Rudy 8, Joseph 5 and Victor only 2 years old. The rest, as they say, is musical history.

P E T COR N E R to ask plenty of questions in order to make an accurate comparison. Some things to consider when selecting the right plan for you:
• The species of your pet – Both cats and dogs need
regular veterinary care and can experience medical issues or accidents. Keep in mind that some species or breeds may also live longer than others requiring a different level of commitment.
September is national pet insurance month! By Christina Chittenden The month of September is celebrated by veterinarians, shelters & rescues, pet owners and insurance companies in both Canada and the USA as National Pet Health Insurance Month. Intended to promote the importance of health
insurance for cats and dogs and to disprove the myths pertaining to coverage, September is a way to introduce pet insurance to those pet owners who may not be familiar with it. Those of us who own pets know that we don’t like to think of our pet’s
getting sick or injured – but, unfortunately, it can happen. When we utilize the advantages of having pet insurance, it allows us pet owners to focus on the most important thing when an accident or illness does arise: OUR PETS.
• The breed of your pet
– Depending on your pet’s breed, there may be specific medical conditions to be aware of. Knowing this can help you prepare for future medical needs. When researching insurance options, be sure to inquire with each company whether they make exclusions based on breed.
• Your financial resources – Having the ability to
proactively save and be diligent about keeping up funds set aside for related illnesses and unexpected medical emergencies should also be considered. Ask each insurance company what coverage limits exist, if any at all. Some companies may have annual limits, or limits for specific treatments or lifetime limits.
WHAT IS PET HEALTH INSURANCE?
This type of insurance is a coverage designed to provide pet owners with financial protection against costly medical expenses. When you have assistance with the costs of care, pet insurance can place families in a better position to make decisions about your pet’s medical needs rather than focusing on the impact it will make on your bank account. Veterinary medicine is ever changing and improving the medical options available for accident and illness treatments for our beloved pets. However, these options don’t come without a cost. Pet owners also have higher expectations for their pet’s health care and standard of living. The key is for your pet to receive treatment as early as possible and as quickly as possible as well as have the financial means to cover whatever expenses you incur.
HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT COVERAGE FOR YOU:
22
Clarksville Living
It is a good idea to gather a few quotes from reputable insurance providers when in the market for pet insurance. Every insurance company is different, so be sure
• Your ability to pay for routine vet care – Consider the financial requirements needed to pay for the routine care your pet will need. Additionally, any previous medical issues your pet may have that require ongoing care should also be considered. • Value added services and add-ons available to you – Many insurance providers offer valuable products and
services in addition to insurance coverage. Be sure to ask about these options in your research. ClarksvilleLivingMag.com
