Editorial. Welcome to the April issue. This month we have an extended News section and have added a new section in the magazine. Race from the Past is a race report from events before Classic and Competition Car magazine was in production. In this issue we have a report from the 2003 FIA GT World Championship race at Donington Park. This was a battle between the fabulous V12 Ferrari 550 Maranello, the V10 Chrysler Viper GTS-R and the V8 Saleen S7, plus the local V12 Lister Storm added to the mix. We also continue our coverage of the modern and historic motorsport and classic car events and we hope to see you out during the summer months.

Works Bugatti 59/50B arrives at Prescott. The World famous works Bugatti 59/50B arrived at Prescott, for the first time in 80 years, on Monday 8th April 2019, as part of the Bugatti Owner’s Club 90th anniversary celebrations, In July 1939 Jean Bugatti accepted the invitation to compete at the first Bugatti Owners’ Club International meeting and brought the works monoposto Type 59 fitted with an 8 cylinder supercharged 4.7 litre type 50B engine for works driver Jean-Pierre Wimille to drive. He was accompanied by his two mechanics Robert Aumaître and Lucien Wurmser. This was the most powerful engine built by the factory and the car was fitted with twin rear wheels specially for the event. Raymond Mays, in an ERA, achieved 46.14 seconds to take the fastest time of the day. Wimille in his first run, © Peter McFadyen

managed a 47.50 seconds run, and improved his time to 46.69 seconds, to take 2nd place. After the event, Jean Bugatti wrote to apologise for bringing an unsuitably large car for the hill and promised the next year to bring one of his new 1 litre cars. Unfortunately that didn’t happen due to the second World War. Except for a single outing in 1945 in the hands of Wimille at the Coupe des Prisonniers in the Bois de Boulogne in Paris, the

59/50B was not driven again. It was retained by the factory and later acquired by the Schlumpf brothers for their museum. It is now part of the Cité de i’utomobile National Museum - Schlumpf Collection at Mulhouse in France. The car will be on display at the Bugatti Trust as part of their Summer Exhibition ‘Jean Bugatti and Jean-Pierre Wimille - Prescott 80 years ago’ which will run until September 2019. Page 5
Porsche Blancpain first win in seven years. The opening round of the 2019 Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup took place at a very wet Monza, in Italy, on the 14th April 2019. After a tricky qualifying session which was on the rain hit circuit with several red flags, it was the Grasser Racing Lamborghini Huracan driven by Mirko Bortolotti, Christian Engelhart and Rolf Inrichen that claimed pole position for the 3 hour race. Second spot on the grid, and Silver Cup pole went to the AKKA ASP Team Mercedes-AMG crew of Nico Bastien, Felipe Fraga and Timur Boguslavskiy. The Pro-Am category pole went to the Oman Racing with TF Sport Aston Martin Vantage AMR of Ahmed Al Harthy, Salih Yoluc and Charlie Eastwood. Finally the Am Cup Class pole went to defending champions Barwell Motorsport with the Lamborghini Huracan driven by Adrian Amstuz, Leo Matchiski and Miguel Ramos.

The wet race had two different Safety Car periods, and some teams gambled on using slicks in the unpredicable weather conditions, with the rain easing on several occasions, but it never actually stopped to allow the track to dry. The pole position Lmborghini was an early leader using slicks, but lost out later for being on the wrong tyres for the conditions. Approaching the half way point it was reigning Champion Marciello, Meadows and Abril in the AKKa ASP MercedesAMG GT3 on slicks who were leading but after a safety car period they eventually dropped back to finish 39th. By the end of the race the track was drying quickly, and those that had gambled on the right setup at the beginning and had prolonged their wet tyre wear that were able to take advantage. The Pirelli Cinurato WH (Wet Hard) wet weather tyre helped the Dinamic Motorsport squad of Andrea Caldarelli, Marco Mapelli and Dennis Lind come from 23rd on the grid to take overall victory in their Porsche 911 GT3-R. Nearly fifteen seconds behind was the FFF Lamborghini of Andrea Caldarelli, Marco Mapelli and Dennis Lind who took 2nd overall. In 3rd place was a third different manufacturer, the Black Falcon Mercedes-AMG GT3 driven by Maro Engel, Yelmer Buurman and Luca Stolz. The GT4 class was won by the Equipe Varschuur McLaren 570S of Daniel McKay and Benjamin Lessennes. Page 6

Ricciardo scores his first points for Renault. On Sunday 14th April 2019, Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo scored his first points for the Renault F1 Team at the Heineken Chinese Grand Prix at the Shanghai International circuit. This was at the landmark 1,000 race in Formula 1 history. Ricciardo started from seventh place on the grid, just ahead of team mate Nico Hülkenberg in eighth. He drove an intelligent race to conserve the tyres with a one pitstop strategy to bring the car home in 7th place at the chequered flag to score six points in the championship and open his 2019 account. Ricciardo said “It was a bit of a lonely race, I didn’t have so many battles but I was being pushed hard from the cars behind all the way to the end. It’s a strong result and the best we can ask for; at least for today” Unfortunately, his team-mate Hülkenberg only managed to get to lap 16, when he retired with an MGU-K related problem which had caused a loss of power.

New V6 diesel Audi S5. For the first time in its history, the Audi S5 now has a V6 diesel power-plant with 48 volt mild hybrid technology and electric powered compressor. The powerful 3 litre TDI engine develops 347PS and 700Nm torque, which sets the S5 apart in this market segment. The 3.0 TDI in the S5 model is the most powerful version in the Audi V6 diesel engine line-up. Both the electric powered compressor (PFC) and mild hybrid (MHEV) systems are embedded in a standard 48 volt main electrical circuit. For the first time in the S5 TDI, a powerful 48 volt belt alternator starter is the heart of the mild hybrid system with maximum recuperation power of up to 8kW. A DC/DC converter steps the voltage down for components in the 12 volt electrical system. A compact, air-cooled lithium-ion battery, with a capacity of 0.5kWh installed under the luggage compartment floor serves as the energy centre. With these characteristics, the V6 diesel engine is the ideal power plant for agility, spontaneity, low fuel consumption and long range. The acceleration to 62 mph is 4.8 seconds for the S5 CoupĂŠ and 4.9 seconds in the S5 Sportsback, with an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.

Armed Forces Charity in 2,000 Km Saharan Rally. The Future Terrain Armed Forces team, many with physical and mental injuries, completed the 2000 km Carta Rallye in Morocco. A team of fourteen current and ex-military service personnel took part in the challenge that took place in the Sahara desert in a trio of Dacia Dusters. Britains most affordable 4x4 were supplied to the team by Dacia UK, who partnered with the charity for the seven day event. From the 31st of March to the 6th April, the vehicles tackled giant sand dunes, rocky roads, flooded tracks and harsh terrain on the 2,000 km challenge. They also drove to Morocco from the UK, more than 2,000 miles, then drove home again in the Dusters after the event. The challenging event saw several specially built rally cars, costing hundreds of thousands of pounds getting stuck overnight in the desert, but the affordable Dusters made it back to camp each evening after ten hours of driving. The Dusters were near standard models, with just racing seats, roll bars and all terrain tyres being fitted. The team took part in the GPS Challenge, a timed navigation based event. The charity wanted to build confidence and skills in the group that competed, and wanted them to challenge and redefine themselves. They also aimed high and achieved 2nd and 3rd place finishes on some legs. They had expected dust bowel conditions for the event, but arrived just after unusually heavy rain, so to start with they were encountering a far wetter environment than predicted. One minute it was sunny weather, the next heavy rain and poor visibility making navigation really tough. Now the team of volunteers are preparing for their next challenge, racing the Dacia Dusters in the British Cross Country Championship rally series. The Duster 4x4 costs from ÂŁ13,710 OTR

Preisig had also gone under the nine minute lap time in free practice.
TAC Rally success for VW. Kris Princen and Bram Eelbode have won the TAC Rally in a Volkswagen Polo GTI R5. Driving for the BMA Autosport team in the Belgian Rally championship, they won six of the fourteen special stages in the third round of the Belgian Rally Championship, which took place around Tielt in West Flanders. They were initially in a battle with Cédric Cherain and Xavier Portier in the THX team VW Polo GTI R5, but the THX car retired after a crash on stage three. Their team-mates Patrick Snijers and Thiery Davy in another VW Polo GTI R5 finished in 6th place. This was the second win of the season for Princen/Eelbode who also won in the Rally van Haspengouw in February. Page 23

The Legend Fires North West Stages Rally, in partnership with Simpson’s Skoda, returned in late March after a years break and was the first closed road special stage event held in the north of England. Planning for the event began in 2014 when closed road legislation was first being discussed by the government. The organising committee consulted with local motor clubs for potential routes, aiming to be ready whenever the legislation was passed. They also engaged the local MP who quickly saw the financial benefit for his constituency and supported the
plans Fabia R5 past his own signage inside Parliament. When the green light came, it was too soon for 2018 so a gap year was taken © Syd Wall while the 2019 project was kicked off. The new rally HQ was at Myerscough College, an ideal site with plenty of space for the start and finish arch and for servicing the 120 car entry. The organisers were rewarded when Friday night’s ceremonial start in Garstang was a huge success with thousands of spectators lining the streets to see all the cars, many of whom returned for Arron Newby took a Saturday's loop of four stages, comfortable 5th place run three times. Quick off the mark was twice winner Simon Bowen in an Impreza S12 WRC, fastest on the first three stages but a broken rear diff on stage 4 sent him back to 11th. He had pulled back up to 6th with one fastest time and two seconds but on stage 8, the repeat of stage 4, a broken clutch put him out for good. After his domination, the rally proved to be

a fabulous battle between three drivers, fastest stage times being swapped from stage to stage between Peter Taylor (Fiesta WRC) Alex Laffey (Fiesta R5) and rally joint sponsor Neil Simpson (Skoda R5). Taylor assumed the lead after Bowen’s demise, despite a handbrake problem and the flatshift failing. Laffey was second but Neil Simpson took the position on stage 8, soon after namesake and five time winner Steve had almost terminal engine troubles with his R5 Fiesta. He kept going to the end to finish 6th. The top three were never separated by more then 9 seconds and Neil Simpson went on to take the lead for stages 9 & 10 after which the top three gap was 1 second. Event sponsor and 2004 winner John Stone couldn’t find the ideal suspension settings on his Fiesta WRC. He finished 12th and said stages 1 and 2 were as good as anything he’s driven and wondered how the organisers were going to top the success of the event. Making it’s debut in New York on April 17th 2019 was the new 2020 Nissan GT-R Nismo, with racing inspired upgrades to make the ultimate performance available to select drivers. Hiroshi Tamura, Chief product specialist for the GT-R reckons that the car has evolved into a balanced, yet extreme performnce car. “Pursuing driving pleasure is the most important concept behind the GT-R, and the new NISMO’s performance suggests it is a car that belongs

on the race track - but is also at home on the open road.” The car has been designed for the pro driver, but built for everyone. Nissan engineers have taken race technology and made it accessible and comfortable for drivers of all skill levels. Vehicle control and predictability were critical to achieve this, so the team adopted the theme “Absolute street and track performance” when developing the car. The one thing that sets the most potent and exclusive of all the GT-Rs apart from the rest of the pack is the amout of carbon fibre found on the car. This includes the front and rear bumpers, front wings, bonnet, roof, side sill covers, boot and rear spoiler. Each component has been designed to cut weight, increase downforce and improve aerodynamics. These modifications have resulted in a weight saving of 10.5 kilograms, plus an additional weight saving of 20 kilograms from other upgraded components. The front bumper now resembles the GT3 GT-R with scalloped vents funneling hot air away from the engine and provide exceptional downforce onto the front tyres, without increasing drag. The also smooth out the airflow along the Page 40
body to improve aerodynamics, with special consideration to the rear spoiler, promoting high speed stability. Exclusive 20 inch RAYS forged aluminium wheels are lighter than before, and the nine spoke design enhances their rigidity. They are fitted with newly designed Dunlop tyres, with a wider tread and fewer grooves which increases the contact patch by 11%. This allows higher cornering force, enhanced steering response and improved rolling resistance compared to the previous model. Even the front seats

are exclusive to the GTR NISMO, designed to hold the shoulder blades and lower body points to give a better driving experience of car and body as one. The 3.8 litre V6 24 valve twin turbocharged engine is handcrafted by a dedicated takumi technician and produces 600 HP with 481 ib-ft of torque. The turbocharger is an exclusive design taken from the GT-R GT3 race car, with modified turbine shape and fewer blades. This optimises the flow rate and improves acceleration response by 20% with no loss of power. The revised 6 speed dual clutch transmission features a refined “R Mode that shifts faster and optimizes gear Page 41
selection, especially when exiting corners. The adaptive shift control is also programmed to adapt shift schedules to the user’s driving style. The GT-R Nismo has few equals in the handling stakes. The uprated suspension tuning has improved cornering stability, with enhanced yaw rate response and smoother ride quality. Even the steering features better linearity and precision, requiring minimal corrections at speeds of up to 186 mph (300kph). Braking is handled by Brembo carbon ceramic brakes, 410mm on front and 390mm on rear, which significantly improve reaction

time, durability and overall stopping performance. Their light weight also decreases unsprung weight on each wheel. The carbon and silica carbide structure of the brakes is nearly as hard as diamonds and when paired with the new material of the brake pads, they generate more friction for enhanced control of the brake system.. The bright yellow paint on the callipers can resist 1,000 degrees celsius. Finally, the car’s exhaust note is the product of a revised titanium exhaust with handcrafted burnished blue tips. Page 42

This years Silverstone Classic has all the makings of another superb event if the media day is anything to go by. The main event will take place between the 26th and 28th July 2019 and has some major historic grids, plus loads of anniversaries being celebrated. To celebrate the 100th birthday of Bentley, there will be a special anniversary race dedicated to honouring the illustrious British marque’s significant historical milestone. The race will be staged on the Saturday evening, almost 100 years after W.O. Bentley founded the company on 10th July 1919. It is hoped to gather more than 30 Bentleys for the Bentley Centenary Trophy for pre-War Sports Cars which will also feature

pre-war Alfa Romeos, Aston Martins, Bugattis, Fraser Nashes, Lagondas and MGs all from the 1920s and 1930s. Bentley won the famous Le Mans 24 Hours race five times in seven years between 1924 and 1930, with the all conquering 1-2-3 podium ninety years ago in 1929. The Bentley race cars of the period were described by rival Ettore Bugatti as ‘The fastest lorries in the World”. The evening race will aim to recreate the magic of the Bentleys thundering through the French night at Le Mans. Nine times Le Mans 24 Hours winner Tom Kristensen and Guy Smith were present to launch the ‘Twlight Tribute to Le Mans’ feature © Pete Austin race on the Saturday evening of the Classic. These are a series of three sports-car races, including the Bentley race already mentioned, plus FIA Masters Historic Sports Cars from the 1960s and early 70s and also Masters Endurance Legends which features super fast prototypes and GTs that competed at Le Mans between 1995 and 2012, showcasing cars that will span almost a century of Le Mans racing.

Mark Walker’s GN Grand Prix The 117 miles of the recent Light Car Welsh Tour constituted but one third of the distance driven by Mark Walker over the weekend. Always one to drive to and from events as well as competing, be it the GN ‘Thunderbug’ or even the Darracq 200HP, Mark drove his 1914 GN Grand Prix a total of 350 miles including the round trip from his home near Lutterworth to Llandrindod Wells enjoying it all except perhaps for the brakes which, he says, are “not very good”.When it was built in 1914, the car was destined for Russia but due to the outbreak of war was never delivered there. It was found derelict but complete before WW2 but by the early 1950s the body had sadly disappeared for reasons unknown. A poor copy of the original body was fitted and in the 60s this was replaced with a copy of the grand Prix body, again a poor one according to Mark. The car moved to America where it passed through three owners, the last of whom sold it to Mark some four years ago. With Nicholas Hildyard’s 1922 GN Vitesse. Note wire and bobbin steering and running boardmounted fuel tank
Mechanically it was almost totally original with the original paint still on the chassis but the engine had suffered some kind of trauma while in the States. The crankshaft had been worked on and heavy Harley rods fitted. Mark has reworked the crank and rods but it is still on plain bronze main bearings with splash lubrication by Castrol R. Of the various © Peter McFadyen transmission options offered by GN, Mark’s car has the 3speed without reverse, final drive being by belts to wheels shod with the correct size 26 x 2½ tyres. It is, says Mark, a delight to drive, the wire and bobbin steering being light and direct with about ¾ turn lock to lock and the car is very happy at 45mph with a top speed somewhere Parked alongside Andy Newbound’s over 50 1921 GN Vitesse at Llandovery

The fifth round of the 2003 Championship was the British race, part of the LG Super Racing weekend at Donington Park at the end of June. Using the full Donington Grand Prix circuit, the race had a good entry of 28 cars taking the start of the 500 km race. Pole position went to 8 litre V10 powered Chrysler Viper GTS-R driven by French driver Philippe Alliot who did a 1 minute 29.361 second lap at an average speed of 161950 km/h. The FIA GT Championship was a sports car racing series organised by the Stéphane Ratel Organisation (SRO) for the FIA in 1997 and as a series it remained until 2009 when it changed into the FIA GT1 World Championship. As races were endurance events, they had a minimum distance of 500 kms or a maximum of 3 hours.

By the end of 3 hours and 3 laps short of the intended distance, when the chequered flag was shown they had lapped the entire field. This was their fifth win of the season and with another victory still to come in Germany, they would finish the season as Champions.

Stig Blomqvist, Tony Pond, Michelle Mouton, Markku Alén, Henri Toivonen, Ari Vatanen and Pentti Airikkala. Now, the rally is the first round of the Fuchs Lubricants British Historic Rally Championship and drivers of a quality field of mostly Ford Escort RS1800s were keen to add their names to the list of former winners. Just over 44 stage miles spread across eight tests were on offer to the 99 car 2WD field and a 15 car 4WD field. To cause as little damage as possible (to stages and cars) the 2WD cars ran first in reverse order with © Syd Wall a 5 minute gap to the 4WD crews. The stages were bone dry which meant dust could be a big problem but in the event, a mild breeze cleared vision for most. 2WD favourite was local man Osian Pryce, the family home being slap in the middle of Dyfi & Gartheiniog forests. He’d won two out of three events in his Escort and he continued Page 68
was safely on his way without penalty. Nick Elliot came closest to Pryce on the final stage when they were tied. Elliot was pushed by third seed Joe Price who established himself in third place over the first half of the rally, finishing 24 seconds behind Elliot. Marty McCormack took a little time to adapt from his usual R5 car in the morning but made a push from 11th in the second half of the rally, beating Elliot and Price on a couple of stages and ending up 5th. John Perrot claimed 2nd in another RS1600, returning after a complete break from rallying for 2 years, 10 seconds clear of Chris Skill’s RS1600. The Unnamed Car Group held their April monthly meeting on Drive It Day at the Old Wagon & Horses public House, located between Stourbridge and Kidderminster. This was their normal monthly meeting, and attendance may well have been down on normal numbers because of Drive It Day, which saw multiple other meetings all over the country. Even so, there were still over fifty vehicles attending. This is a Facebook group who have free meetings at the end of each month, with no restrictions on the type of vehicle attending, provided it is either classic or interesting. There is usually a strong MG presence at these meetings, but this was notable by their absence for this meeting, as they usually lineup together down the rear of the field.. However, there were plenty of interesting vehicles on display. One eye catching vehicle, which had not attended any previous meetings, was a 2001 Ford Fiesta which had been © Simon Wright

It was parked next to a 1987 Volvo 340 series which also had a rusty coloured bodywork appearance, but had no Mad Max additions. Moving to the other extreme were a pair of E-Type Jaguar sportscars, a blue 1966 4.2 litre coupe and a similar red model, © Simon Wright which was parked next to a 2003 Jaguar XK8, which highlighte E-Type Jaguar and Jaguar XK8 d the change in design over a thirty five year period. caravan conversion. The basic vehicle was a 1100cc Ford Escort estate car, with a tilting roof conversion, forming a very basic motor caravan, but it included a small built in camping stove and tables in the rear. Another very Ford Escort Mk1 Motorhome unusual car was a 1984 1.6 litre Nissan Stanza hatchback. This model was built between 1982 and 1986 and was the first middle class
Nissan to go front wheel drive. There was also a 1997 1.4 litre Nissan Almera. Both of these Japanese cars were very popular in the day, but are quite rare to see these days. Not so rare is the Mazda MX5, probably the most popular sports-car model on the road today. There were three present, lined up together. were a pair of modern Ford Mustangs, powered by 5 litre V8 engines. This can propel the car to around 150 mph so they make ideal track day cars, as well as being a comfortable vehicle for the road at much lower speeds. One vehicle that definitely caught the eye was a 1973 Morris Marina 1.8 TC 4 door saloon in a bright yellow-green colour, complete with black fabric roof and white wall tyres. front engine rear wheel drive layout. They were assembled at Cowley between 1971 and 1980 in both saloon and coupe body styles. The model was also available with the 1.3 litre A series engine. The car used torsion bar front suspension and leaf spring on the rear. The Marina always sold fairly well, usually being in the top four best selling cars, but was in direct competition to the Ford Escort and Hillman Avenger. There were a pair of Rover 2200 saloons parked together. These cars looked almost identical except for the small TC badge and sunroof on the green model, which signified it was the more upmarket Twin carburettor model
