Big Change for Coventry MotoFest 2021.

As the largest free motoring festival in the UK, MotoFest has been a great success for the city pf Coventry over the last few years. It has been held over a single weekend and recently has included closing part of the City ring road for demonstrations and even timed, competitive motorsport sprints. Having been unable to hold the event last year due to the pandemic, this years event is going to be in a different format. For 2021 Coventry holds the title UK City of Culture, and Motofest will be held over four consecutive weekends instead of a single weekend. Each weekend will have a separate theme, with the first weekend of the 17th-18th July 2021 titled “Your Future Moves’. This will be based around innovation and technology, for which Coventry is World famous. The following weekend, 24thth © Simon Wright 25 July is

‘Motorcycle Weekend’, which should also include a ride-in, as well as static and dynamic displays across the city for 2 wheeled enthusiasts. The 31st July-1st August is ‘Motorsport and Performance weekend’. While there will be no ring road circuit this year, there are plans for a Drift arena and an ‘energetic’ motorsport display along with static displays all across the city. The final weekend on 7th-8th August 2021 is the ‘Classic and Performance Car Weekend’. Again, there will be static displays across the city, plus themed events including road runs taking in Coventry and surrounding countryside. The organisers are also planning to launch the event with a spectacular ‘Italian Job’ themed stunt that will blow the doors off for fans of the film and motoring enthusiasts alike. New Owners for Caterham Cars. The legendary British sports car brand Caterham Cars has been acquired by Japanese based automotive group VT Holdings from previous owners Tony Fernandes and Kamarudin Meranun. As one of Japan’s largest retailer groups, with over 200 showrooms nationwide and investments in UK, Spain, Thailand and South Africa, they had been the Japanese importer for the Caterham Seven since 2009, where they currently sell over 120 cars annually. They also import other vehicle brands including Lotus and Royal Enfield motorcycles. Caterham Cars sell to 20 markets globally with exports accounting for 60% of its annual new car sales volume. VT Holdings said they were proud to welcome Caterham to the group. “We have not only purchased a globally renowned performance car manufacturer but have become custodians to a motoring legend. We will protect and develop the Seven to meet the legislative challenges that lie ahead.

Festival of the Unexceptional. Hagerty’s annual Concours de l’Ordinaire is open to classic cars, motorcycles and light commercial vehicles built between 1966 and 1996, but spaces on the coveted concours lawn are limited, so owners of eligible vehicles are encouraged to nominate their entry at the earliest opportunity. This show is for mundane cars that were once commonplace on the roads and not exotic supercars. Cars like the Datsun Cherry were once a common sight, now there are very few left on the road. Basic models will be chosen over more upmarket versions, so a City would take preference to a Vanden Plas or a Merit chosen over an Sri for the Concours lawn display. 2021 is the 7th Concours de l’Ordinaire organised by Hagerty. It moves to a new venue for 2021, Grimsthorpe Castle in Lincolnshire and will be held on Saturday 31st July 2021. UK’s Rarest Cars to be showcased at the Silverstone Classic As the world’s biggest historic motor racing festival, this year celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Classic. As well as all the usual races and events It will also feature a special display starring 50 of the UK’s most seldom-spotted cars. These will not be one-off prototypes or multi-million pound limited edition hypercars. They will be more familiar mainstream models from bygone ages that are hardly ever seen on our roads today. Many of these so-called ‘ordinary’ cars are now more endangered than most Ferraris and Aston Martins. Some were limited edition models, devised to add value in the showroom, while others, like the Austin Mini Metro, the Fiat 128, Datsun Cherry and the Renault 4 were very popular in period but today are serious scarce. Tickets for Classic Silverstone must be booked in advance, there will be no tickets available on the gate. Adult General admission starts from £47, with free admission to accompanied children aged 10 and under. For more information visit www.silverstone.co.uk/events/the-classic

Robin Tuluie had a successful start to the meeting in the Riley Menasco Pirate winning the Silverstone Trophy race - for VSCC Specials

With the national lockdown starting to be eased, the Vintage Sports Car Club managed to run their first race meeting of the year in the middle of April. The Spring Start meeting was run on Saturday the 17th April 2021 on a gorgeous spring day, unfortunately without spectators. A full ten face program attracted a large entry of eager drivers, happy to be back out on track. The club also managed to run an AutoSolo event at the back of the

National paddock, which also attracted a large entry. Using the short National circuit, after morning practice the racing started after the lunch break with a VSCC Specials race for the Silverstone Trophy. Heading the large thirty three car grid was Robin Tuluie in pole position driving the 1929 Riley Menasco Pirate. He dominated the race, leading the fifteen minute race from start to finish. He was chased all the way by Mike James in his 1935 Riley 12/4 TT Sprite Rep. They soon started lapping traffic by the fourth lap and by the end of the twelve lap race, Tuluie was almost half a lap ahead. The only others to complete the full race distance were Harry Painter in his 1934 MG PA-PB in 4th and Richard iliffy in his 1939 Riley TT Sprite Replica in 5th. The top six was rounded out by Charles Goddard in a 1934 MG PA-PB who completed eleven laps, one behind the race winner. The fastest lap also went to race winner Tuluie, on the sixth lap, with a time of 1 minute 12.53 seconds, an average speed of 81.35 mph. Race 3 was the GP Itala/Amschel Rothschild/Patrick Lindsay Memorial Trophy Race for Vintage, Pre-War & Front-engined Pre-1961 Racing Cars. The twenty four car grid had Richard Wilson driving the fabulous 1960 Ferrari 246 F1 on pole position. This was probably the best race of the day with Wilson fighting it out with Frederick Harper in the 1957 Kurtis Indy-Roadster for the entire race. Harper had the initial advantage and led for the first four laps but the Ferrari was either right behind or alongside every lap as they rounded the Brooklands, Luffield complex. The Ferrari then led for the next eight laps, with the Kurtis trying to climb all over the back of the Ferrari. By lap thirteen, Harper in the Kurtis was back in-front, with Wilson in the Ferrari trying hard to pass every lap through Luffield. Wilson set the fastest lap of the race with a 1 minute 6.52 seconds, on the sixteenth lap of the race in his battle with Harper. This gave Harper the Amschel Rothschild Memorial Trophy. In 3rd place, over a minute behind, was John Ure in a 1953 Cooper Bristol T24/25, the only other car to complete the full race distance of 18 laps. Taking his second success of the day was Robin Tuluie in the Riley Menasco Pirate, who finished 4th overall to win the Patrick Lindsay Memorial Trophy, having completed 17 laps. MG Cyberster concept

MG has released the first official photographs of the MG Cyberster concept. The two seater electric sports car will be unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show . Developed by the team at the MG Advanced Design Centre in London, the two seater sports car recalls the tradition of MG and draws a number of styling cues from the classic MGB Roadster while also introducing new high-tech features which include an interactive gaming cockpit and 5G connectivity. The intelligent all-electric architecture

gives a range of approximately 500 miles and an electrifying performance, with 0-62 mph in under 3 seconds. The body has been designed to enhance aerodynamic performance, while retaining some classic MG design features. The classically shaped MG grille also serves as an air duct to ensure airflow over the vehicles chassis. It also has classic round MG May 2021

headlights with an interactive ‘Magic Eye’ design that open when switched on. Other striking details include the ‘laser belt’ LED strip down the side of the car and the outline of the door, which

follows the direction of the LED strip. The design has a distinct two-stage shoulder line, with a flattened ‘Kamm tail’ rear. It also has unusual ‘Hacker blade’ alloy wheels The tail lamps are LED and integrated flat in to the rear of the car, projecting a digital image that echoes MG’s British heritage. The interior adopts a driver-centric layout with a separate cockpit for driver and passenger. And a large LED instrument cluster with a second central screen. The screen in front of the driver presents all of the vehicle information in a modern, minimalist style, while the centre display houses the more interactive features. The ‘zero gravity’ seats have floating head restraints, while the door panels and red leather handles reflect the ‘laser belt’ that runs down the cars exterior.

The first Group C car was 2nd placed Porsche 956 of Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell.

The Pace 6 Hours, a round of the FIA World Endurance Championship for manufacturers at Silverstone, was the first race in the UK for the FIA’s new for 1982 Group C sportscar category competing for the World Endurance Championship. The formula limited cars to a minimum weight of 800 kg and a maximum fuel capacity of 100 litres. With competitors restricted to five fuel stops within a 1000 kilometre distance, the cars were limited to consuming 600 litres. This fuel limitation stopped manufacturers using turbocharged engines from improving performance by turning up the boost, something which had happened in previous years with Porsche and Lancia. The rules were popular as it theoretically allowed large naturally aspirated engines to be competitive with © Simon Wright

smaller turbo or supercharged engines. This popularity led to large entries with an array of varying designs from many different teams. The race winning Group 6 But at Silverstone, despite Lancia LC1 spider of Michele taking pole from Lancia by Alboreto and Riccardo Patrese over a second, fuel conservation early on by the Jacky Ickx/Derek Bell Porsche 956 (2.65 litre turbo flat 6) let the small open topped Group 6 Lancia LC1s (1.42 litre turbo straight 4) run away into a one lap lead at the end of the first hour. Anniversary Series Event. Due to the current restrictions, the event was run behind closed doors with no spectators able to attend. A good entry was eager to get behind the wheel again and they were greeted by a lovely sunny day. There were three separate tests laid out around Curborough, one using the normal paddock area, one running from the paddock, running up to the start line and then back to the paddock and the third test started from next to the finish line and ran round the majority of the sprint course. Marker cones marked out the course and competitors were given a map for each test, showing the route required to drive round the marker cones. After all the runs had been completed, against the clock, the winner was Jamie Yapp, from BTRDA, driving a 1.3 litre Vauxhall Nova SR in Class E. He was awarded Fastest Time of the Day with a total time of 656.2. The fastest CDCC 51

Making a welcome return to driving a Formula One car at the recent Monaco Historic Grand Prix was Jean Alesi who was competing in an ex Niki Lauda Ferrari. Sadly he crashed while leading the race following a coming together with the Lotus of Marco Werner. Alesi drove for Ferrari between 1991 and 1995. His last year in Formula One was 2001 when he drove for Prost and Jordan. He is shown here during practice for the 2001 British Grand Prix at Silverstone in the Prost AP04/Acer. He finished the race in 14th place, two laps behind the winning McLaren Mercedes of Mika Hakkinen.

climate change upon some of the world’s most remote and at risk ecosystems. Its winning appeal has attracted legends from every area of the sport, including Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg on the team management side – and Jenson Button, Sébastien Loeb and Carlos Sainz behind the steering wheel of the impressive ODYSSEY 21 E-SUV, a 1,650kg beast of a car capable of reaching 100km/h from a standing start in less than five seconds and tackling gradients of up to 130 per cent. All the ingredients were in place for an event like no other – and Extreme E delivered with interest. The series raced into the heart of the Saudi Arabian desert

Extreme E had promised to create a spectacle in AlUla over the weekend of 3/4 April 2021, and the Desert X Prix did just that with jaw-dropping competition, stunning backdrops, high drama throughout, a sensational scrap for glory – and unprecedented media coverage. Having been the pioneering new championship’s trusted Media and PR partner since its inception two years ago, MPA Creative was proud to play its part in what has been widely praised as an exceptional success story. The pioneering electric SUV off-road racing series is the biggest talking point in motorsport right now, and with good reason, as the purpose-driven championship travels around the world to race without a trace and leave behind a positive legacy, while helping to highlight the impact of

for its inaugural X Prix, and the challenging, high-speed 8.8km track layout – laid out in the midst of a breathtaking otherworldly landscape – was designed to push drivers and cars absolutely to their limits. It did not disappoint. “We’ve worked so hard on this for many years, and finally everything came together this weekend,” said Alejandro Agag, Extreme E Founder and CEO. “It really has been beyond my wildest expectations. If I had written a script for the perfect weekend, I could not have come up with anything better than what we have witnessed here – I’ve never seen such extreme racing in my life. I think it’s fair to say we have really made our mark.” The Rosberg X Racing pairing of three-time FIA World Rallycross Champion Johan Kristoffersson and former Australian Rally Champion Molly Taylor conquered Saturday’s single-car Time Trials and Sunday’s wheel-towheel action to lift the Desert X Prix trophy. The duo emerged victorious at the end of an event that yielded more than 4,500 media articles throughout almost 100 countries, attaining an extraordinary total reach of 1.2 billion. Having been on-board from the outset, MPA Creative played a key role in securing that outstanding global coverage. Extreme E Head of Communications, Julia Fry, was quick to praise the agency’s input into an event that was challenging and rewarding in equal measure, generated some of the most spectacular images ever seen in the sport and drew widespread acclaim from competitors and fans alike. “MPA Creative has worked alongside Extreme E from concept to execution. The company was selected due to its strong motorsport heritage and industry relationships as the series looked to lay firm foundations based around its sporting credibility,” she explained.

“Beyond that, though, the MPA team’s tireless dedication and readiness to go the extra mile for Extreme E has been a huge asset to the series in its start-up journey, resulting in a truly valued partnership which far exceeds the usual client agency relationship boundaries. “Thanks to Deborah, Carla, Russell, Anna, Simon and all the team at MPA Creative for their unfaltering support. The success of Extreme E’s opening race weekend is a credit to the past two years of hard work. Together we have made motorsport history, and this is just the start.” The series will race the electric vehicles in five remote locations that are already damaged or severely under threat of climate change. The five locations will include the melting ice caps of Greenland, deforestation in Brazil and rising sea levels in Senegal.

Bentley return to Pikes Peak 2021 Bentley Continental GT3 Pikes Peak.

Bentley have launched a new sustainability initiative with their return to the Pikes Peak Mountain Hill Climb in America. The most extreme road car based Bentley in the companies 101 year history, the Continental GT3 Pikes Peak, will run on biofuel based gasoline. The company have launched a major new sustainability initiative with the announcement of a renewable fuel research and development programme. Various blends of fuels are currently being tested and evaluated, with possible Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reductions of up to 85% over standard fuel. This is the first step in a longer programme

that will investigate both biofuels and e-fuels for their potential to power the Bentleys of the past and present in a sustainable way. The Continental GT3 racer is based on Bentley’s race and championship winning car and has been designed and built to compete for the Time Attack 1 record at this year’s Pikes Peak Hill Climb. The car has been developed in conjunction with GT3 customer team Fastr and will be driven by former King of the Mountain Rhys Millen from New Zealand. He is a three times Pikes Peak champion, who holds individual class records. These include the two 63

existing Bentley records - the Production SUV record won in 2018 with a Bentayga W12 and the outright Production car record from 2019 in a Continental GT. The aim is to power its way through the 12.42 mile course and add a third Pikes Peak record for Bentley to add to the Production SUV and Production Car records attained in 2018 and 2019. Fastr have successfully campaigned their Bentley Continental race car in Time Attack competitions across the country. Technical teams from Bentley and Fastr are working together with specialists from M-Sport in Cumbria to extract the maximum possible performance from the Continental GT3 package, which will run in Colorado with extra assistance from K-PAX Racing… To break the record, the car will have to complete the nearly 5,000 ft climb, which includes 156 corners, at an average speed of more than 78 mph. This must get it across the finish line in under nine minutes and thirty six seconds.

With the climb starting at 9,300 ft and the climb going to 14,100 ft, the air is 1/3 less dense than at sea level. This has resulted in extreme modifications to the aerodynamics package and engine. The rear wing is the largest ever fitted to a Bentley and is mounted above a highly efficient rear diffuser that surrounds the transaxle gearbox.. At the front of the car is a two-plane splitter, flanked by separate dive planes. The engine is developed from the 4 litre turbo V8 fitted to the Continental GT V8, modified to use the carefully selected Biofuel. This will ensure that the engine develops significant horsepower despite the rarefied atmosphere. Short side-exit exhausts will ensure the car sounds as dramatic as it looks. Further modifications include cooling air scoops in place of the rear side windows and a stopwatch mounted to the roll cage next to the steering wheel to allow Millen to keep track of his sector times. The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb takes place on the 27th June 2021.
