Oneoftheoldestcarswasalocallybuilt1926Clyno.The ClynoEngineeringCompanywasamotorcycleandcar manufacturerthatfirststartedinThrapstonin1909before movingtoWolverhamptonin1910.Thecompanycontinued until1929withover15,000motorcyclesandbetween 36,000and40,000carsproduced.In1926theywerethe thirdlargestcarmanufacturerinBritain,behindAustinand Morris.TheClynoRoyal2Tourerwasavailableasa10.8 hp,11hpor11.9hpmodel.Itusedthe1368ccCoventry ModelF4-cylinder,sidevalveengine,drivinga3-Speed gearboxthroughaconeclutch.Afourwheelbrakingoption wasintroducedin1925.Itranfrom1922to1928with around35,000built.In1928theTourerversioncost£152. ThemodernRevivalmodelfollowsthisdesignlayoutand modern measurement showsthat eachcorner carries25% ofthe vehicles entireweight. Another improvement wastothe carsfuel tank.The originalhad thefuel tankswere locateddeep inthesillsas wellas behindthe driver.Now, using advanced3d scanning, theBizzarrini engineers havecreated anintricatelyshapedtankfillingthespaceinthechassis,to tolerancesandaccuracynotavailabletotheoriginal engineers.Theoverallfuelcapacityof95litresisonly marginallylessthantheoriginal.Italsokeepsthevehicles rangewithintherequirementsforamultipleroundrace series.

Oneoftheearliestcarsondisplaywasastunningyellow 1970LotusEuropaSeries2(LotusType54).ThismidenginedsportscarfollowedtheColinChapmandesign philosophyof“Simplify,thenaddlightness”.Itconsistedof alightweightfoldedandweldedboxedsteelbackbone chassiswithafibreglassmouldedbody.Productionran from1966to1975andatotalof9,230carswerebuilt. Originallypoweredbya1.5or1.6litre4cylinderRenault engine,whichwasreplacedbythe1557ccLotus/Ford DOHC4cylinderengine.Thiscarhasthe1565ccRenault enginefromtheRenault19.ButontheRenault,the transaxlewasmountedinfrontoftheenginetodrivethe frontwheels.Withtheenginemountedintherearonthe Lotus,theengineandgearboxwasturned180degreesto drivetherearwheels.Thisgavethecar1forwardand4 reversegears.Butrepositioningthedifferentialcrownwheelwithinthefinaldriveassembly,thankstothe symmetricalsplitcase,thedirectionoftheoutputshaftwas reversed,correctingtheproblem.

76September2022ClassicandCompetitionCar ClassicandCompetitionCar TheAustin7was Britain’sanswerto America’sFord ModelT,asmall affordablefamily car.Itwasbuiltat Longbridge,near Birmingham,by theAustinMotor Companybetween 1922and1939, withover290,000 built.Itwas producedasa2doorsaloon,a2doortourer,a2doorCabriolet,a 2-doorcoupeand a3-doorvan.The firstcarsoldasan Austin7hpwasa smallcarbuiltby SwiftofCoventry,soldin1909asanAustin7hp.In1920, aftertheendofthefirstWorldWar,SirHebertAustin commenced workingona smallcarproject tomeetthe needsofyoung familieswanting toownan affordablemotor car.Thecarwas designedby StanleyEdge, withSirHerbert Austin responsiblefor thestyling.Itusedasmall 4-cylinder696ccsidevalveengine,withaRACratingof 7.2hp.ThreeprototypeswerebuiltatLongbridgeand announcedtothepublicinJuly1922.SirHerbertAustin hadusedalargeamountofhisownmoneyintothe project.Nearly2,500carsweremadeinthefirstyearof BelievedtobetheoldestsurvivingAustin7. Theside-valveengineconsistedofacastironcylinder blockandcastironcylinderhead,withanaluminium crankcase.Coolingwassuppliedbyathermosiphon withoutawaterpump,andtheelectricsupplycamefroma dynamodrivenfromthetiming gears.Amelectricstartermotor wasfittedfromNovember1923. Initiallythecarusedamagneto ignitionsystem,whichwas replacedbyacoilin1928.The3Speedgearboxwasreplacedwith a4-Speedversionin1932, synchromeshaddedto3rd andtop gearin1933,withsynchromesh thenaddedto2nd gearin1934. Asaresultofsomemotorsport successatBrooklands,twonew sportsmodelswerelaunchedin January1924,theSportsandthe BrooklandsSuper-Sports. TheAustin7wassopopularthatversionsweremade underlicenseinothercountries.InGermanytheAustin7 wasmadeunderlicensebyDixi,whowerelaterboughtby BMW,from1927.InFrance itwasRosengartfrom1928 andinAmericatheywere madeby American Austinfrom 1930.They werealso copiedby Nissan (Datsun)in Japanin 1937asa Datsun16. 78 andlocalcoach-buildersmanufacturedbodiestosell completecars.ThelargestandbestknowwasHolden’s MotorBodyBuilderswhoproducedtheAustin7tourerand roadstermodelsfromthemid1920s.Productionofthe Austin7officiallyfinishedin1939,withmorethan290,000 carsbuilt.
