JasonPlato retiredfrom BTCCracing afterthe recentfinal roundsat BrandsHatch inOctober. Inaracing careerthat startedinthe late1980’sin karting,he progressed through Formula3 andFormula Renault, includinga championship titleinthe1996RenaultSpiderChampionship. Bornin1967inOxford,heracedfor8differentBTCCteams duringaBritishTouringCarcareerthatspanned24seasons intheseries.Duringthisperiodhedidhaveatwoyearbreak whilstracingintheASCARseriesasapotentialrouteinto theUSNASCARseriesbutadriveopportunitynever materialised.
In1997,PlatowasgivenaBTCCtestdriveforthesecond seatintheWilliamsRenaultteamalongsideno1driverAlain Menu.Platowasgiventheopportunitytodriveagainst GianniMorbidelliandJean-ChristopheBouillonfortheseat, butwasinitiallyoverlookedbyFrankWilliams.Avisittothe factoryandafterameetingwithWilliams,hewasgiventhe
seattorunintheLagunaalongsideMenuforthe1997 season.AlthoughMenudidtakethe1997Championship Platofinishedthirdoverall,wontworacesandqualifiedin poleinhisfirstthreeracesasarookie. LanceReventlow,sonofWoolworthsheiressBarbara Hutton,whosedreamofconqueringtheGrandPrixWorld Championshipwithhisall-AmericanScarabcarswas thwartedbywhatturnedouttobeanoutdated,i.e.frontengined,approachatatimewhenCooperandLotushad alreadymovedon,isanotherstrongthreadinthestory. TheScarabworkshopwasrightnexttoenginebuildersJim TraversandFrankCoon’sTracoestablishment.Balcaen alsoworkedforawhilewithJimHallonhisinnovative Chaparralsportscarsandpiecebypiecethestorybuilds intoapictureofthewiderracesceneinAmericaatthe time.
