Withtheendoftheyear.Rapidlyapproaching,boththe racingandspeedseasonhavenowfinishedfor2022.But thisdoesn’tstoptheVintageSportsCarClubfromhaving funwiththeirvintagecars,theyjustheadforthehills. Trialsareaverysociableformofmotorsportaseachcar canhaveasmanycrewmembersasthecarcanhold.In mostmotorsportyouneedalightcarforspeed,butinTrials youneedaheavycartocutthroughthemud.Mostvintage carshaveverynarrowwheelsandtyres,whichareidealto cutthroughmudorloosesurfaces.Addingextracrew membersaddstotheweight,andthenwehavethestrange sightof‘Bouncing’.ThegoalinTriallingeventsistogetas highupthehillaspossible.Thecourseismarkedby indicatorboards,andthecarismarkedbyhowfarit progresseswithoutgoingbackwards.Whenthecarstarts

TheMGSVwasastrangecar.Itwasmanufacturedatthe QvalemanufacturingplantatModernainItalyafterMGhad boughtthecompany.TheSVwasbasedontheQvale Mangustaplatform,formerlytheDeTomasoBiguà,which hadusedcomponentsfromtheFordMustang.The conversionfromdesignclaymodeltoproductioncarwas donebyaSwedishcompany,Caran.Theproduction processwascomplex,usingcarbon-fibretomakethebody panels,whichwereproducedintheUKandthenshipped toItaly.Thebodyshellsfittedtothechassisandrunning gearbeforebeingshippedfromItalytoLongbridgefor finishingandusedseveralinteriorandexteriorFiatpartsas wellaspartsfromtheMGTFandRover75.Thebase modelcost£65,000andtheXpowerSVRcost£83,000. Only82carswereproduced,notincluding4prototypes. WhenMGRoverwentintoAdministrationin2005,only9 XpowerSVcarshadbeensold.Severalwereondisplayat theClassicMotorShow.
