Times are hard for everyone these days and that even reaches to top level motor racing. Only 13 cars took the start of the 6 Hours of Donington, a round of the European Le Mans Series, and the remaining two European races have been scrapped for this year. The Simon Wright organisers of the FIA GT World Editor Championship have also withdrawn for 2013. Does this mean that fans are moving away from Long distance races? Le Mans continues to be one of the most popular sporting events in Pete is the man for Historic racing, with the World, but in this country, after the British Grand Prix, an extensive archive of black and white the next most popular events are all based around Historic images covering the last few decades of motorsport. The Silverstone Classic packed a massive 24 motorsport in Britain. Also keen on BRM races covering all types of motorsport in to its three day MICK HERRING programme and drew a bigger audience than last year. The Goodwood Festival of Speed and Revival both continue to draw massive crowds and as other nostalgia events are organised around the country, the fans continue to attend. Maybe it is because they can identify with the cars, and they all tend to look very different to each other. The modern series cars all tend to look very similar, often restricted by very tight regulations. Maybe its time to throw caution to the wind, and let designers go with their imagination. It should still be possible to keep costs down without all having such similar designs!

The 2012 European Le Mans Series have cancelled the last two races in Europe for this year at Brno (Czech Republic) and Algarve (Portugal) and will have their final race in America when they take part in the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta in Georgia USA. The Petit Le mans is the tenth and final round of the American Le Mans series and is a 1000 mile or 10 hour race which will take place over the weekend of the 17th to the 20th October 2012. Besides the overall result of the Petit Le Mans, there will be a specific classification for entrants in both series which will decide the final results of both championships and decide which teams will receive invitations to the 2013 Le Mans 24 Hours race. The points scored at this race will be doubled for the ELMS Championship contenders. This decision came after the second round of the European Le Mans series was held at Donington park (England) at the beginning of July with only 13 cars taking part in the race. It is expected that a full season of races in Europe will be announced in the near future for 2013.

Sergio Pininfarina born Sergio Farina 8th September 1926 to 3rd July 2012 Born in Turin, Italy he joined his father Battista Farina at Carrozzeria Pininfarina and during his career was responsible for many of the Ferrari designs for which the company is famous. In 1961 his family surname was changed to Pininfarina by Presidential decree. In 1965 Sergio persuaded Enzo Ferrari to use a mid engine design for a new road car with the engine behind the driver but ahead of the rear wheels. The Ferrari Dino Berlinette Speciale was shown at the Paris Motor Show in October 1965 but it took another 2 years before the car went on sale. After his fathers death in 1966 Sergio became president of the company and in 2006 Sergio and his son Andrea were named Honorary Chairmen of Pininfarina. The list of cars which Pininfarina helped produce is impressive and includes the Alfa Romeo Spider Duetto and 164, the Bentley Azure, the Peugeot 306, 406 Coupe and 504 Coupe/Cabrio, the Maserati Quattroporte, Gran Turismo and Gran Cabrio, the Lancia Beta MonteCarlo, Gamma Coupe and Therma SW. He also did work for Fiat with the Fiat Dino, the 130 Coupe and the 124.But Pininfarina will always be associated with Ferrari with the P4/5, the 360, the 328, the 288 GTO, the Testarossa, the Enzo and the Ferrari F40 which he was lead design. Between 1979 and 1988 Sergio was a Liberal Party MEP and was part of the Europeaan Liberal Democrat alliance. In 2005 he was named Senetor for life of the Italian Republic. He passed away on the 3rd of July 2012 at the age of 85. To his family and friends we offer our sincere condolences. © SImon Wright

Silverstone Circuit is up for Sale.

Quickstep to a write off

After attempts to lease the circuit have failed, the world famous venue is now reported as being offered for sale after reporting losses of £4.5 million last year. The BRDC who own the circuit, had loans to construct the new £27 million Wing Pit and Paddock complex which opened last year, but need an additional £100m more to complete expansion plans which include an on-site hotel. After failing to lease the 850 acre site, the BRDC has now said that it will consider selling the entire circuit to raise the money to complete the expansion plans.

for the celebrity race. As Brendan approached the left hand bend at the end of the main straight, the brakes failed and the car went straight on in to the barrier at 73 mph. He hit the barrier hard, and was taken away for medical examination. He returned to the circuit later in the day with a couple of crutches for support. He had gashed his knee and there was still blood on his overalls, but he reported that there was no serious damage, nothing was broken and that he ached, but felt good considering the speed of the impact! He also wished to thank the Paramedics and medical team and everyone at Silverstone who had looked after him.

By Fast Company A starring roll at the annual Muscle Car Masters meeting in Sydney on the first weekend of September means an earlier-than-usual start for the 10th annual MSC New Zealand F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series. Though the final venues and dates of all seven rounds of this season's anniversary series have yet to be signed off the organising committee has confirmed those of the first three rounds this year as well as the fourth, fifth and sixth early in the New Year. The appearance at the popular Muscle Car Masters meeting will be one of two for the MSC series across the Tasman this season, with a return to the recently refurbished and re-named Sydney Motorsport Park (nee Eastern Creek) circuit in late November for the 2012 Australian Tasman Revival historic motor racing meeting. In-between is the first New Zealand round at the annual Wigram Revival meeting at Christchurch's Powerbuilt Tools Raceway at Ruapuna Park on October 27 & 28 and after the Tasman Revival meeting in Sydney over the November 24/25 weekend come the back-to-back fourth and fifth MSC series rounds at the two NZ Festival of Motor Racing - celebrating Denny Hulme meetings at Hampton Downs over consecutive weekends in late January 2013. Defending MSC series champion Steve Ross (McRae GM1) heads a 14-strong Kiwi assault on the Muscle Car Masters meetings with support from a key group of local racers including three-time former series champion Ken Smith (Lola T430), 2011/12 season series runner-up Aaron Burson (McRae GM1) and fellow Aucklanders Roger Williams (Lola T332) and Clark Proctor (March 73A). © Fast Company/Alex Mitchell Top Australian driver James Davison (Lola T332) leading Robson and Sala at the final round of the 2011/12 series at Phillip Island earlier this year.

entries from category aficionados from the UK, the US, Canada and Australia. The New Zealand F5000 Association now has 88 owner/drivers with race-ready cars on its books, the majority - 49 - Kiwis, but with its own domestic series finally up and running Australia can now boast 18 to supplement the 10 from the UK, one (current Lady Wigram trophy holder Jay Esterer) from Canada and balance from the United States of America. Nurburgring goes bankrupt?

The state owned company, Nurburgring GmbH, which operates the 14 mile public track, the Nurburgring, will probably apply for bankruptcy by the end of July. The Rhineland Palatinate government has run out of options after a rescue package from the European Commission now seems unlikely. The €13 million request is not likely to be approved by the end of the month and the company has debts of €413 million

according to the newspaper Rhein Zeitung in Germany, which also published that according to its sources the European Commission was not going to rescue the circuit. European competition authorities refused to approve the rescue plan which means that the company that owns the circuit will go in to administration. It is estimated that the entire complex is only worth around €126 million. It is expected that this seasons events will continue, but the future of this great circuit will depend on what the Administrators can sort out, as they are obliged to get the most value as possible for the creditors. © Pete Austin Start line grandstand, Nurburgring Nordschleife

Young Guns, Formula One and Diamond Celebrations By Mike Jiggle

Emerson Fittipaldi Lotus 49C and Johannes Willenpart Lotus 72

Although the theme of this year`s Festival of Speed was `Young Guns – Born to Win`, the underlying theme seemed to be 60th Anniversaries which mirrored the Queen`s Diamond Jubilee. Lotus celebrated 60 years since the birth of the marque in a humble outbuilding in Hornsey, going on to shape all disciplines of motor sport from F1 to Indycar and Le Mans. Many believe this sleeping giant is on the brink of future F1 success with the experience of former world champion Räikkönen and the youth of Grosjean, both drivers were on hand at the festival to represent 21st century Lotus. Mercedes were in celebratory mood too, another 60 year anniversary – this time that of the Super Licht which first saw the light of day in 1952 sporting the now legendary `gullwing` doors. The Pan-American and Le Mans winners were on display, together with Fangio`s 1955 Mille Miglia car which finished second to Moss and `Jenks`. There was everything from Edward VII`s horse drawn Town Coach, to a 1920 LNWR Royal Saloon rail carriage, and to a more modern 1992 Daimler DS420 used by the Queen Mother until her death in 2002. One of the most striking vehicles, however, had to be the 1950 Lincoln Cosmopolitan Limousine `Bubbletop` commissioned © Pete Austin by Harry S Truman, with the `Bubbletop` conversion commissioned by Dwight D Eisenhower some 4 years Royal Rolls Royce Phantom V later. Le Mans 24 Hours, claiming their 11th victory in 13 years. One of the most quirky of those demonstrated was the March F1 2-4-0, a grand prix car of the 1970`s which never competed a grand prix. The six wheeler, with four drive wheels at the rear, as opposed to the four steering front wheels of the Tyrrell P34, was an engineering exercise by designer Robin Herd more to create publicity and much needed funds in period rather than to necessarily be a serious racing contender – although it did win a trophy or two in the hands of Roy Lane, the hill-climber. The Festival crowd were amazed and applauded driver Jeremy Smith who drove the six-wheeled F1 car to 8th place on its debut at the event. Other six wheeled cars, the Tyrrell P34 (by far the most successful) and the later Williams FW08 six wheeler completed the trio of grand prix cars evaluating six wheel technology.

Contemporary F1 teams, drivers and cars drew maximum attention from the crowd. Whereas every grand prix weekend they are cocooned in a protective bubble, for Goodwood F1 is up close and personal for car and driver alike. It`s a chance for these high octane drivers to let off a little steam and `play` with their steeds lighting up rear tyres, camouflaging their presence in clouds of burning rubber as they pull donuts, and enchanting onlookers as they flash past in their multi coloured screaming projectiles. After these displays, Button, Hamilton, Räikkönen, Webber, Rosberg, current world champion Vettel were happy to sign photos, books, artwork and even scraps of paper for delighted fans. stunning aerial acrobatics augmented with trademark artistic red, white and blue smoke trails. Other displays included a dramatic exhibition of aerial dexterity of the impressive Eurofighter Typhoon; £66.7 million of airborne metal. The Panavia Tornado completed the displays in the skies above the hill-climb. Thankfully, despite recent inclement, soggy conditions, weather wise the whole event was reasonably rain free, with only a short sharp shower on the Friday morning. In summary, Lord March, ringmaster of this great show continues to push the envelope and keeps reinventing the festival to maintain its freshness. Whilst those of us who have been to most of the events since its inception in 1993 may become a little cynical, the quantity of paying public is the real measure of success. In this year of austerity, and with Jubilee and Olympic events, the FoS held its own with record attendances again. I spoke to a complete newcomer, Alain Prost, and asked his view, he said, “The Goodwood Festival of Speed is even better than I`d thought ..... You can see the tradition and love of motor sport here in the UK. I believe this is the only event that could do that”.

GT Cup Races 1, 2 and 3 - Snetterton 30th June/1st July 2012 By Mick Herring. © Mick Herring

The entire field on the first lap

The Snetterton 300 circuit played host to round 4 of the GT Cup with three 25 minute races over the weekend. Following Saturday's late morning qualifying, race 1 would top the bill later that afternoon. Race 1 would see Richard Chamberlain's hugely powerful Porsche 935 take the lead, closely followed by Derek Johnston's black Ferrari 458 Challenge car (now with it's heavy air conditioning system removed and a few other kilos shaved off) close behind. This was the pattern until a sensor problem struck the orange © Mick Herring © Mick Herring Porsche and Derek Johnston swept through to a lead he would hold to the flag. Johnston's Ferrari could not match the power of the Porsche but with superior brakes the two were always closely matched for overall pace. After rebooting the © Mick Herring systems, Richard Chamberlain would recover to finish second, some 20 secs adrift of the Ferrari. Group 2 provided some close 3 way racing with Don Grice's BMW holding off a determined pair of Porsches until a spin dropped him to the rear of the trio. Race 2 The Porsche - Ferrari battle resumed, again it would be Richard Chamberlain's Porsche that led the first two laps until a turbo broke, leaving Derek Johnston to win by 1m 07secs. Group 2 was a straight fight © Mick Herring between Don Grice's BMW and Peter Smallwood's Porsche 997 GT3 until Grice retired with traction control problems, leaving Smallwood to take 2nd overall. Colin Broster suffered a puncture after a misunderstanding with the slowing Porsche of Chamberlain, which would see him dive into the pits to change a damaged wheel, a determined resumption would see him regain 3rd on the group 3 podium and finish 5th overall. Ahead of Broster were:- 3rd John Saunders (Ginetta G50) and Chris Bentley (Porsche 996) in 4th. The final finisher was Mark Cowne (Porsche 996). Race 3 would see Derek Johnston unchallenged from lights to flag but to maintain his concentration and race craft he drove every lap in the Ferrari as though it were a lap in qualifying to lead the field home by 1m 21secs. Apart from witnessing Johnston's precision, the highlight was the racelong battle between the two Porsches of Colin Broster (2nd) and Peter Smallwood (3rd) (996 and 997 respectively). First Smallwood kept Broster at bay but once through, Broster was determined not to give his hard fought second place back. Broster's older 996 very fast in a straight line against the newer cars ability in the corners. Chris Bentley was 4th and Mark Cowne 5th. Vintage and Post Vintage Thoroughbred meeting Shelsley Walsh 1st July 2012 By Simon And Janet Wright This meeting, co organised between the Midland Automobile Club (MAC) and the Vintage Sports Car Club (VSCC) brings together the oldest competition cars on the oldest operational motor sport venue in the World. A good crowd turned up to enjoy the spectacle of these old cars tackling such a steep narrow hill, and the spectator car park was as interesting as the paddock with a large number of people arriving in vintage and classic cars. The oldest car entered was the 1903 Panhard Levassor S4M of Richard Black which with a 13,5 litre engine, was quite a small engined car for the period. Crowd favourite was Mark Walker in his 1905 25 litre Darracq World speed record holder, which was driven in his usual flamboyant style up the hill. Mark also usually drives the Darracq to events on the road, and with no real bodywork fitted to the car, this is quite an achievement in itself. Overall winner was James Baxter whose 1934 3.5 litre Frazer Nash single seater proved its usual dominant force with a time of 33.45 seconds gaining him the Fray Challenge Trophy. The MAC Challenge Trophy was awarded to Robin Tuluie in his 1929 6 litre Riley Menasco Pirate with a time of 36.03 seconds. © Simon Wright Class awards went to Mike Sythes in a 1930 Morgan Super Aero, Mrs Clare Mudie in a 1930 Austin 7 Replica, Geoff Smith in a 1929 Frazer Nash Super Sport, Chris Sutton-Scott-Tucker in a 1927 Alvis 12/50 SD, Jeremy Brewster in a © Janet Wright 1927 Lea Francis Hyper, Tim Wadsworth in a 1931 Lagonda 2 litre L/C Tourer, Graham Galliers in a 1938 Alta 2 litre Sports, Roger Buxton in an Alfa Romeo 6C Zagato Spyder, John Guyatt in a 1936 Darracq Jeffrey Edwards Alvis Sports Special Talbot Largo T150C and Mrs Charmian Black in an Alfa Romeo 8C. 6 Hours of Donington - European Le Mans Series Donington Park

© Janet Wright

By Simon & Janet Wright with additional photos by Pete Austin & Mick Herring. A small field of just 13 cars took the start of the Donington 6 Hour race with the Oak team Gulf Morgan Judd of Matthieu Lahaye on Pole position. He led the field off from the start, and at Old hairpin on the first lap Alex Brundle ran wide in the Zytek on to the the kerbing, and as he rejoined the track, two of the cars went off on to the infield while trying to avoid him. The Sebastien Loeb Racing Oreca Nissan driven by Nicolas Marroc lost control as Brundle rejoined the track, taking Soheil Ayari in the Pecom Racing Oreca spinning across the grass and in to the barrier. Ayari got going again and managed to make it back to the pits where the car was wheeled back in to the garage. The team got it back out in about 3 laps but the car appeared to be crabbing and headed back to the pits. Meanwhile the race lead was being held by Lahaye in the Gulf MorganSam Hancock in the Jota Zytek .

Alex Brundle got into a battle for 5th with Pierre Thiriet, who had started his Oreca Nissan 03 from the front row of the grid. Brundle managed to grab 5th place at the Melbourne hairpin on the 7th lap. Ayari put his Oreca 03 in to the gravel at McLeans at around the one hour mark but managed to avoid hitting anything too solid. At the end of the first hour the order was Lahaye/Nicolet Morgan Judd leading from Hancock/Dolan Zytek Nissan Z11SN and Pla/Baguette/Enjalbert Morgan Nissan with 42 laps completed. In the GT class, which had 3 cars entered across two categories, the Porsche 997 RSR held the early lead. Just after the 1 hour mark, the first retirement occurred when the Lola Judd B12/80 Coupe retired with a suspected alternator failure. After the initial pitstops the order changed at the front of the field. The Oak Racing Morgan Judd of Pla/ Baguette/Enjalbert had moved into the lead ahead of its team mates Morgan Judd of early leaders Lahaye/Nicolet who then dropped to third behind the Hancock/Dolan Zytek Nissan Z11SN who passed them coming out of the Melbourne hairpin. At the three hour mark the Dolan/Hancock Zytek Nissan Z11SN crashed out at Old Hairpin, going backwards in to the barrier on the infield. The car retired at 127 laps and 23 seconds short of half distance. This brought out the Safety car and most of the teams headed straight in to the pits. This left the Ordonez/ The start of the race © Simon Wright Kimber-Smith/Brundle Zytek Nissan Z11SN in the lead but at the restart they went straight off the circuit at Goddard's handing the lead to the Oreca 03 of Beche/ © Pete Austin Thiriet. Minassian in the Sebastien Loeb Racing Oreca managed to get a lap back under the Safety car, which put him back on the same lap as the leaders after their earlier problems. At around the 4 hour mark, the Sims/Jousse/Jousse Lola Judd B12/80 Coupe retired after the first hour Dagoneau/Battut/ Hartshorne Formula Le Mans Oreca 09 went off circuit at the Melbourne loop, but managed to rejoin the circuit. Ordonez/Kimber-Smith/Brundle Zytek Nissan Z11SN The first of the leading bunch to make their pit stop was the leading Morgan Nissan of Pla/Baguette/ Enjalbert, with Pla taking the wheel. This gave the lead to Beche/Thiriet in the Oreca with Warren Hughes in second place in the Oreca 03 of Firth/Hughes/ Hartley. After the pits stops were all done, it was the Oreca of Beche/Thiriet that retook the lead. With less than an hour and a half to the finish, Warren Hughes

dived for the lead at the chicane and led from the Oak Morgan of Pla/Baguette/ Enjalbert. Hughes then had a quick spin down at Old Hairpin but managed to avoid hitting anything and retained the lead. Behind, the battle for second was between Pla in the Morgan and Kimber-Smith in the Zytek when Kimber-Smith headed for the pits and dropped to 5th place. The leader, Warren Hughes pitted with seventy minutes remaining and changed over to Hartley for the final stint. This promoted the Pla/Baguette/ Enjalbert Morgan Nissan to first place which it maintained until the end of the race, winning by 21.574 seconds from the Oreca Nissan 03 of Beche/Thiriet while the Firth/Hughes/Hartley Oreca Nissan 03 in third place. They were the only three runners on the same lap, 251 covered in 6 hours. The GT cars all finished the race, with only two cars retiring from the total 13 starters. Simonsen/Cocker finished 8th overall and were the only car in the LMGTE Pro class in their Ferrari 458 Italia, finishing 19 laps behind the overall winner. The Porsche 997 of Armindo/Narac/Pons finished 9th overall and won the LMGTE Am class. The overall winners Pla/Baguette/Enjalbert were presented with the Wheatcroft Trophy, Donington's most prestigious trophy at the end of the race. The reliability rate was very good amongst these cars, it just needs a few more cars on the grid to fill the circuit, especially as the full circuit, including the Melbourne loop behind the pits was used for the race. Alan Mann Trophy Donington by SImon & Janet Wright with additional photos by Pete Austin and Mick Herring. This invitation race drew a varied mix of Pre-66 Touring cars across all classes. Henry Mann, the reigning Pre-66 Touring Car Champion, teamed up with BTCC star Mat Jackson to drive his father’s Ford Mustang in the iconic Alan Mann Red and Gold colour scheme. They grabbed Pole position from the Mike Gardiner/Phil Keen Ford Lotus Cortina. There were three BMWs entered for Richard Shaw/jackie Oliver, Charles Tippet/Claire Norman and Richard Postins, all making a return to the Masters series. The race saw Mat Jackson take an early lead but was chased hard by Richard Shaw in the BMW. The two circulated as one for many laps, with the BMW getting very close every lap

under braking for the Melbourne hairpin. The BMW grabbed the lead when the Mustang had a quick spin at Goddards. This left Henry Mann the task of fighting back to the lead. The Ford Falcon of Rob Hall and Ben Hall was now leading and with only 4 laps remaining Henry was closing all the time in the Falcon. Pushing hard, Henry took the lead on the last lap to take an emotional victory especially as his mother Sharon presented the inaugural Alan Mann Trophy. Rob Hall and Ben Hall finished second in the Ford Falcon and Sean McInerney took 3rd place in the Ford Cortina as well as winning his class. Other class winners were Phil Burgess (Austin Mini Cooper S), Mike Dowsett (Hillman Imp) and David Large (Austin Healey 100M). Additional photos on-line at www.classicandcompetitioncar.com

Michael Lyons won the first Peter Gethin Memorial race in his F5000 Lola

By Simon & Janet Wright, Pete Austin and Mick Herring. This three day festival of historic motorsport seems to get better each year and covers just about every category of historic motorsport. In what has been a very wet summer this year, the main two days of the Classic were held in beautiful sunshine, with the only damp spell being a heavy shower on Friday evening during sports car qualifying. A record crowd of 83,500 enjoyed watching over 1,000 competitors in 24 races, with cars covering seven decades, over the weekend. winning the first of the Peter Gethin Memorial Trophy races in his F5000 Lola on Saturday morning by just 0.144 of a second from the F2 Class winner Martin Stretton in a March 742. He was not so lucky in the Sunday race, retiring on the second lap. Simon Hadfield in the F5000 Trojan T101 had a interesting race leading from start to finish, but was being hunted down by Martin Stretton in his F2 March 742 who finished only 0.124 seconds behind at the flag and also winning his class. Stretton was mighty in his much smaller engined March as he chased after the much more powerful F5000 cars. Formula Junior had started both days racing with Jon Milicevic in a Cooper T59 winning Saturdays race while David Methley in a Brabham BT6 won on Sunday.

Alan Mann Trophy - Henry Mann and Mat Jackson Ford Cortina

Classic and Competition Car August 2012

Saloons are always a crowd favorite and Saturday saw the Under 2 litre cars out on circuit competing for the Alan Mann Trophy. His son Henry Mann shared one of the iconic Alan Mann red and gold Ford Cortina with current BTCC star Mat Jackson but they were unable to repeat their win the previous weekend at Donington Park and only managed to finish 4th The Ford Lotus Cortina took a 1-2-3 with McInernev narrowly beating Voyazides/Hadfield and the Banks’s. The more modern saloons were catered for in a pair of races for the Touring 38

Car Trophy 1970-2000. These races featured several Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500s which were part of the Classic celebration of this models 25th anniversary and included an original driver, Dave Brodie back behind the wheel of one of the cars. Current BTCC driver Frank Wrathall was also entered in a Vauxhall © Simon Wright Cavalier and he managed to finish 2nd to Rick Pearson in a Nissan Primera in both races. The race was a very interesting mix of cars covering the 30 year period, but it shows how much development has gone in to modern touring cars as the older more powerful cars were beaten by their more modern counterparts. Sports and GT cars were well represented at the meeting. The Sir Stirling Moss Trophy for Pre 61 Sports Cars saw the powerful Buncombe/Ward Lister Jaguar Costin take victory from the Dodd/Dodd Cooper Monaco T49. Missing from the race was Brendan Cole (Professional Dancer) who had an accident in practice - see separate news story. The race Woodcote Trophy - Anthony Reid & Nigel Webb Jaguar C-Type 3rd lead eventual winners proved a flag to flag victory for Emmerdale actor John Young & Andrew Smith - Cooper Jaguar T33 Kelvin Fletcher who led home the battling musicians Brian Johnson (who was also entered in the WSM race on Sunday) and Jay Kay. More GT action in the form of two Jaguar E-Type Challenge races saw Alex Buncombe win both races, leading home Jason and Jon Minshaw in the first race and Gregor Fiskin and John Pearson in the © Simon Wright second. Sunday saw the running of the RAC Tourist Trophy for Historic Cars (Pre 63 GT). This was won by Naismith driving an Aston Martin DB4 from Adams in a Turner Mk2. The Woodcote Trophy for Pre 56 Sportscars saw Young/Smith win in a Cooper Jaguar T33 from the Jaguar D Type of Pearson/Pearson and a Jaguar C Type of Webb/Reid. Group C Races – Silverstone Classic By Pete Austin

After a delayed qualifying on a still damp tack on Friday evening the Group C cars were welcomed by warm and dry conditions for their first race on Saturday under a setting sun. Chaos reigned at the first corner as a number of cars in the midfield tangled although only the Lancia LC2 (one of three in the race) was unable to continue. Gareth Evans took his first victory of the weekend in the Mercedes C9 followed by Roger Wills in another Lancia and the Jagermeister Porsche 962 driven in this race by Belgian Chris D’Ansembourg. © Mick Herring

World Sports Car Masters by Mick Herring Friday afternoon's qualifying for the World Sportscar Masters had to be halted due to heavy rain. After the rain had passed it was restarted on a track still generally wet and slippery in many places. This would inevitably jumble the grid and place a few of the main protagonists further down the order and some of the nimbler 2 litre cars nearer the front.

The battle for the lead between winners Smith/Bryant Lola T70 and the 2nd place Ferrari 512M of Knapfield/Stretton

mirror, resulting from contact with a backmarker and resultant spin. The same relentless pace would continue after the hand-over of both Lola (to Olly Bryant) and Ferrari (to Martin Stretton, driving the car for only three laps in Friday's wet qualifying). Of the other 2 litre cars, the GRD that rock legend Brian Johnson was due to share with ex-F1 driver Roberto Moreno ran in fifth place until a driveshaft broke on lap 3 with Moreno at the wheel. Dry qualifying may have seen the driveshaft break in time to be replaced for the race, the car was noticeably quick over those laps. The grunt of the 12 cylinder Ferrari would see it dominate on the straights and take fastest lap but give best to the Lola in the corners. At the flag Olly Bryant's Lola was 0.8 seconds ahead of Stretton's Ferrari with Steve Tandy's solo, consistent, drive rewarding him with third. A busy Steve Tandy having just finished fourth in the Group C race that immediately preceded this race. Classic and Competition Car August 2012

In contrast Sunday afternoon's race would be bright and sunny. Andrew Smith would start the Bryant family Lola T70 Mk3B from pole, the similar car of Leo Voyazides(destined to retire with engine problems) behind with the 2 litre cars of Steve Allen/David Gathercole (Lola T212) and Frank/Michael Lyons (Chevron B16) to their respective right's. Andrew Smith's Lola led but would soon be joined by Paul Knapfield's sonorous Ferrari 512M after charging from the fifth row. This would become a race-long battle with the premier positions being traded between these two on several occasions. The Lola lost time and part of its driver's door, with

Rob Hall/Andy Wolfe were 4th in their Lola T70. Manfredo Rossi di Montelera's Osella Abarth PA1 was the first 2 litre car in fifth overall despite a double quota of track-limit infringement penalties. Charlie Kemp/Richard Sykes' Lola T210 followed Rossi in sixth ahead of Richard Meins/Chris Lillingstone-Price's Lola T70, seventh and the venerable McLaren M1C of Ewan McIntyre in eighth, notable in view of there being several examples of each version of McLaren M1 built, i.e. 2x M1A, 3x M1B and 3x M1C. For me this was one of the best, if not the best, race of the Silverstone Classic meeting and classic sportscar racing at its closest.

Roger managed to reverse this order on Sunday and Eddie McGuire made it a Lotus 1-2-3 with his Lotus 16 362 finishing 3rd in both races. The HGPCA Pre-66 Rear engined Grand Prix cars races saw dominant victories in both races for Jason Minshaw driving a Brabham BT4 ahead of another Brabham BT4 of John Harper and Rod Jolley managed to take 3rd also in both races in his Cooper T45/51. Its former winners include James Hunt, Niki Lauda, Jackie Stewart, Emerson Fittipaldi, Graham Hill, Jack Brabham and Jim Clark. This year at the Silverstone Classic, this prestigeous trophy was award to the aggregate victor of two Grand Prix Masters races. The winner was in no doubt as Bill Coombes managed to win both races in his Tyrrell 009. However, it was no easy victory. In the first race on Saturday, Michael Lyons had romped away in the lead in his Hesketh 308 until he retired on the last lap due to an electrical failure and was not classified as his car had stopped out on the circuit. This left Bill Coombs the winner from Steve Hartley in his Arrows A4. The Sunday race saw Michael Lyons start at the back of the grid. By the end of the first lap he had passed © Janet Wright 16 cars and was in 10th place. By lap 4 he was third and although he managed to close the gap gradually on the leaders, he finished the race in third place. The battle at the front was quite intense. Off (and on) Track action Besides all the on-track action at the Classic, there was also a massive car club display area taking up the majority of the interior of the circuit. There were several significant celebrations taking place at Silverstone to mark some significant anniversaries. One of the high-lights was to see 60 Ferrari F40s take to the track on Sunday to celebrate the 25th birthday of this iconic supercar. There were over 7000 cars on display over the weekend, with 73 car clubs organising display areas. Some of the other celebrations included 50th anniversaries for the AC Cobra, Mk1 Ford Cortina, Lotus Elan, MGB, and Triumph Spitfire. Some clubs were also celebrating birthdays, including TVR Club (50 years), Mercedes Benz Club (60 years), BMW Car Club (60 years) and Renault Owners Club (60 years) and the Lamborghini Club UK (25 years)
