Editorial.

Oh Well, Winter is upon us, and there is not much action taking place over the festive season. But now we can look forward to a New Year and a new season of motoring action. First major event is the Autosport International Show at the National Exhibition Centre, near Birmingham, England. This is always a great event for January and has the benefit of being inside. This year will hopefully produce some spectacular racing and good weather, so we can enjoy our motoring pursuits without developing webbed feet! The anniversaries continue to come thick and fast, with Aston Martin celebrating its centenary with lots of planned events world wide including the Silverstone Classic. We also have 50 years of the iconic Porsche 911, 50 years of Lamborghini and 60 years of the American classic Chevrolet Corvette, so 2013 promises to be another great year for car enthusuiasts, and we can't wait. See you out there.

Pete is the man for Historic racing, with an extensive archive of black and white images covering the last few decades of motorsport in Britain. Also keen on BRM.

80th anniversary of racing at Donington celebrated at Historic Festival 2013 The Historic Grand Prix Association (HPGCA) will celebrate the 80th anniversary of the first car race at Donington Park in 1933 by staging a pre-war Grand prix race at the Donington Historic Festival in May 2013.The winner will receive a Tazio Nuvolari Trophy. The early days of Grand Prix racing were filled with legendary marques such as Alfa Romeo, Bugatti, ERA, Maserati, Frazer Nash, MG and Talbot-Lago driven by famous drivers such a Nuvolari, Seaman, Lang, Prince Bira, and Rosemayer. Many of these cars still race today. In these early years, Donington Park saw its fair share of action. This included Richard Shuttleworth 'Mad Jack' winning in 1935 at the wheel of his Alfa Romeo P3 and the famous Silver Arrows of Germany dominating in 1937 and 1938 driven by Bernd Rosemeyer and Tazio Nuvolari. The HPGCA will aim to recreate some of this excitement at the Historic Festival. © Janet Wright

The Brooklands Double Twelve Motorsport Festival June 15th and 16th 2013 have been confirmed as the dates for the Brooklands Double Twelve motorsport festival. Organised by Brooklands and the Vintage Sports Car Club, the event is a birthday celebration for the original opening of the Brooklands circuit in 1907. The weekend consists of three stand alone events- the Double Twelve Speed Trials held on the Mercedes-Benz World Circuit on the Saturday, the Double Twelve Driving Tests on Sunday and the Double Twelve Concours held on both days. Each event will have its own awards but to qualify for a Brooklands Double Twelve award, a competitor must compete over both days in any two of the three events and the combined scores of the two events will decide their Double Twelve placing. This means that a competitor can do the Speed trial on Saturday and the Driving Test Sunday or either of those events and the Concours on the other day. Due to time constraints, it will not be possible to compete in all three events. The Speed Trial and Driving Tests are being organised by the VSCC. For more information see their web site at www.vscc.co.uk. The Double Twelve concours is organised by the Brooklands Museum and will be split in to the following classes:Aston Martin Centenary, Vauxhall 30/98, The 'Grand Tour' pre-war, the 'Grand Tour' post war, British cars at Le Mans, Mercedes Benz SL Pagoda 50th Anniversary, Veteran and Edwardian, Historic Brooklands Vintage , Historic Brooklands PostVintage, Spirit of Brooklands Pre-war, Spirit of Brooklands post war and the Spirit of Brooklands Open Wheel racing. © Simon Wright

As Aston Martin reaches its centenary, just over a third of the company has been sold off to an Italian consortium Investindustrial for £150 million as part of a half billion pound spending plan aimed at reviving the brand's fortunes. Investindustrial had previously held a stake in Ducati before selling it to Audi. They join Kuwaiti firm The Investment Dar as backers of Aston Martin. The Italian consortium are hoping to achieve similar results that they achieved at Ducati by expanding the model range and strengthening the dealer network throughout the World. There have been suggestions that the current range has stagnated, with models appearing outwardly similar, though there are major differences under the skin.

To celebrate the centenary year, Aston Martin is planning a packed programme of global events throughout 2013. The centre piece of these Aston Martin Vantage V8 LMGTE Am car of Roald Goethe and Stuart Hall celebrations will be a dedicated Centenary Week which will involve every at Silverstone in 2012 aspect of the company, from its headquarters at Gaydon to the spiritual home at Newport Pagnell and will include the global dealer network and the Aston Martin Owners Club. This week is from the 15th to the 21st July 2013. For further information, see the Aston Martin web site at www.astonmartin.com

Donington Park major dates for 2013. Donington Park has announced its major events calendar for 2013. The car events start with the Historic Sports Car Club season opener on the 17th March 2013, followed a week later by the 750 Motor Club Car Championships race meeting on the 23rd March. This is a 'home' event for the club which is now based at Donington. April has the Motors TV National Race Day meeting televised live on Motors TV on Saturday 6th followed by an MG Car Club meeting on the 7th. The first of the big events is the British Touring Car Championship on the 20th and 21st of April. The very popular Donington Historic Festival is now a 3 day meeting from the 3rd to the 5th May. Another significant event is the return of the Superstars International Series at the end of August. This European series for powerful V8 saloons is making its third appearance in a row at Donington and always provides spectacular action.

With the MSA Formula Ford Championship dropping the Duratec class for 2013, the BRSCC have announced they will run a separate championship for these cars in 2013. The races will be held over 7 or 8 events and will include a class for Zetec powered cars. (c) Simon Wright

In just 2 years the Donington Historic festival has established itself as one of the major historic motorsport events on the International scene. This year sees two significant anniversaries for one of Grand Prix racings finest drivers, both of which are associated with Donington Park. Ayrton Senna started his Formula 1 career at Donington Park in 1983, testing a Williams FW08. Ten years later, he won a very wet European Grand Prix at Donington Park. Many considered this to be his greatest victory. In honour of these two anniversaries, the Donington Historic Festival will celebrate the career of Ayrton Senna. For more information see www.doningtonhistoric.com

The FIA and MSV have agreed to not run the FIA Formula 2 championship for the 2013 season. After running for just 4 seasons, since 2009, it was agreed that the single team policy for the formula had lessened its appeal to drivers and if Formula 2 is ever to return, it should be on a multi team basis. The series has drawn good grids and competitive racing over the past 4 years. © Mick Herring

John Cooper Fitch 4th August 1917-31st October 2012 Born in Indianapolis, John was an American World War 2 flying Ace who took up sports car racing after the war, dring an MG-TC. Showing plenty of talent in sports car racing, he was signed up for the 1951 Buenos Aires Grand Prix of Sport Cars, Argentina driving a borrowed, restored Allard J2. The car had been involved in a crash and the chassis had been straightened by tieing the frame to an oak tree and Š Roger Allard powering the Allard until the chassis was roughly straight. John used his skill to win the race. He went on to race in Europe driving Cunninghams at Le Mans and won the 1953 Sebring 12 Hours race driving a Briggs Cunningham C4R Chrysler with Phil Walters. He joined Fangio and Moss at Mercedes in 1955, winning the Production class in the Millie Miglia and sharing outright victory in the 1955 Tourist Trophy with Stirling Moss in a Mercedes Benz 300 SLR. He witnessed the terrible crash at Le Mans in 1955 which killed 83 people and injured another 120 and it led him to begin working on improving safety. He developed the Fitch Inertia Crash barrier, the yellow sand filled barriers that are common on American highways. He also went on to manage the Chevrolet Corvette sports car team and later developed his own sports car, the Fitch Phoenix which he raced regularly at Lime Rock Raceway, where he was General Manager living next to the circuit. To his family and friends we offer our sincre condolences. We would also like to thank Roger Allard for the photographs in this article. Š Roger Allard

Held at the National Exhibition Centre in conjunction with the Autosport International Show, the Performance Car Show is the place to be for aspects of high performance road cars. This years show will include a couple of new car launches in the UK. The new Ariel Atom 3.5 will make its public debut at the show. One of the fastest road cars to buy, the new 3.5 includes an engine power boost to 310bhp from the supercharged 2 litre Honda VTEC engine. This gives it a 0-60mph time of just 2.7 seconds and a top speed of 155mph. displayed at the show were finished in lilac. The cars were fitted with the Ford 6 cylinder 2553cc engine from a Ford Zephyr MkII, which produced between 107 and 149 BHP and gave the roadster a top speed of 123 miles per hour. The car was based on a 1948 tubular steel chassis from the 14hp sports model, adapted to fit the Ford Zephyr engine and Moss gearbox with overdrive powering the rear wheels. Fuel consumption was quoted at 26 miles per gallon. The car incorporated Dunlop disc brakes and rack and pinion steering, with indepedent Torsion bar front suspension and semi-elliptec leaf spring rear suspension attached to a live axle. When new it had a list price of £2096. Although the cars were manufactured very quickly, they showed considerable attention to detail in a unique style. Unfortunately, despite the high hopes of the management and staff, the design failed to win a single sale. After only 3 were built, the project was abandoned, and this expensive exercise for the struggling firm probably contributed to the eventual closure of the factory. It's streamlined body design had a crash worthiness ahead of its time with design features not seen on other cars for many years. This car was originally bought from the receivers by two brothers in 1961 who completed the car. The current owner purchased the car in 1968 and had it completely

restored by Chisbon Restorations who returned it to its original motor show finish, but added the lowered windscreen, which was one of twenty modifications instigated by the factory in the spring of 1961 to make the cars ready for sale. The cost of development of this model may well have contributed to the decline of the company which was originally formed in August 1895 by Richard Lea and Š Janet Wright Š Simon Wright Graham Francis. Based in Coventry, the firm originally produced bicycles before switching to car production in 1903 with a strange model fitted with an under floor mounted 3 cylinder engine, which also failed to sell. They switched to motorcycles with more sucess before moving back to cars but went in to receivership during the great depression in the early 1930s. The company was revived in 1937 under new management, and produced a new car designed by Hugh Rose, formerly with Riley. After the war, in 1945, the cars proved more popular in saloon and sports car layout. Its 2 1/2 litre engine proved popular and was fitted to various racing cars of the time, including early Connaughts. In the early 1950s sales declined again and the company concentrated on general engineering before attempting a come back into car production with the Lynx in 1960. The company finally folded and the assests were all sold by 1962. In total around 10,000 Lea Francis cars were built. Š Simon Wright

the Jan 18-20 and 25-27 2013 meetings to 35. Heading the Aussie squad is 2012/13 MSC series round one race winner Bryan Sala from Melbourne who will drive a Matich A50/51. He will be joined at the two meetings here by fellow Victorians Paul Zazryn (Lola T332), and Bill Hemming (Elfin MR8), South Australian John Bryant (Lola T140), and Rod Carroll (Lola T140) and Aaron Lewis (Matich A50) from New South Wales. The two mid-summer meetings at Hampton Downs have traditionally attracted a number of drivers from around the world and the 2013 ones are no different. Local MSC series regulars continue to make up the bulk of the field. But their numbers will be supplemented this year by the six entries from across the Tasman, three - Mike Whatley (Lola T300 & Surtees TS8), Greg Thornton (McRae GM1) and Mark Dwyer (Lola T400) - from the UK, two - Bruce Leeson (McLaren M10B) and Eric Haga (Lola T190) - from the United States, and one expat Brit Peter Dunn (March 73A) - from Lola T140 pair John Bryant and Rod Carroll are crossing the Tasman to contest rounds four and Monaco. Š Fast Company/Alex Mitchell After two points rounds - one in Australia five of the 2012/12 MSC F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series at Hampton Downs in January and one here - so far this season, defending MSC series title holder Steve Ross holds a 33 point lead over Auckland driver Aaron Burson (McRae GM1 with Ken Smith just a point behind in third place with class newcomer David Banks (Talon MR1A) fourth and David Abbott (Lola T430) from Christchurch fifth. Ross and Bryan Sala shared wins at the opening round of the 2012/13 MSC series at the big Muscle Car Masters meeting in Sydney in September but Ross staged an impressive clean sweep to claim the prestigious Lady Wigram Trophy at the second, in Christchurch, a month later. Dark horse at the two NZ Festival meetings, however, could well be regular UK visitor Greg Thornton. At the recent non-championship MSC series round at Australia's biennial Tasman Revival meeting in Sydney he won two of the four races in his newly acquired ex Stuart Lush McRae GM1. The two NZ Festival of Motor Racing - celebrating Denny Hulme meetings are again expected to attract large crowds with cars either once driven by or associated with New Zealand's only Formula 1 World Champion being shipped in from all over the world for display and/or demonstration. After the two rounds at the NZ Festival meetings at Hampton Downs the MSC series title chase heads south for the penultimate round at the annual Skope Classic meeting at Christchurch's Powerbuilt Tools Raceway at Ruapuna Park over the Febnruary 02-03 weekend and the final at Invercargill's Teretonga Park a fortnight later. The event always attracts an eclectic mix of vintage cars ranging from two sporty Bugatti Brescias, various Austin 7s and MGs through to a Fraser Nash BMW 328. This last car was driven by John Muschamp whose wife, Fabbienne this year had her Austin 7 which she described as her ‘own little baby’.

Archive Photo of the month By Pete Austin Last month Bradley Wiggins deservedly won the 2013 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award following victories in the Tour de France and an Olympic Gold Medal. It seems incredible but it's 40 years since Jackie Stewart won that award having won the World Championship in 1973. Tragically this was overshadowed by the death of his team mate Francois Cevert at the United States Grand Prix although Stewart had already made the decision to retire from the sport earlier on in the season. This image was taken at the International Trophy at Silverstone which Stewart also won in his Tyrrell 006. Interesting to note are the safety features (or lack of them!) illustrated in this shot. In the foreground are the railway sleepers which lined much of the track in those days with a complete absence of safety fencing. Someone who appears to be a fire marshal is perched on top of the breeze block wall while a spectator relaxes in a chair on the roof of his car. Different days!

Boxing day Car meet The Moat House Inn, Alcester.

© Janet Wright

By Simon and Janet Wright A dry but cold Boxing day saw a good crowd gather at the Moat House Inn for the annual Car Meeting. People took advantage of the good conditions to come out for some fresh air after Christmas and bring their pride and joy along for fellow enthusiasts to view. This year there was a strong performance car attendance with Ferrari, Porsche, Lotus, Mercedes and Chevrolet models in attendence. There was also a good selection of classic British Sports cars on show with Triumph and MG having at least a couple of different models represented. Bearing in mind it was the middle of

winter, there were also several converitible models present, but sensibly they had their hoods up to protect the occupants from the cold. There was a good turn out of classic Fords with several Cortina, Escort and Capri models showing why the blue oval models have always been popular with the Briitish public. There was even a American muscle car Ford Mustang on show in the classic blue and white shelby style colour scheme.

There were also several slightly more unusual cars on show such as the MDH sportscar and the Citroen 2CV Roadster. Slightly older was a classic Riley RMA 1 1/2 litre saloon from the 1950's and a vintage Bugatti from before the war. Finally there was a good turn out of motorcycles and several side car combinations. Classic and Competition Car
