Editorial The weather outside is freezing, so it is fortunate that a lot of events at this time of year are in doors in the UK. Only the hardy Rally fraternity are hardy enough to brave the elements. The significant event for March is Race Retro at the Stoneleigh show ground near Coventry. Billed as Europe's premier historic motorsport show, it offers a nice mixture for this time of year. The Majority of the time is spent inside admiring all the display cars on show and exploring the many trade stands, but on the Saturday and Sunday, the adventurous can head outside and watch mighty Group B rally cars, and historic Karts perform on the live action stage. The all tarmac circuit may not be a timed competition, but that doesn't mean that the drivers are not trying. Definately something not to miss.

The British GT scene has received a welcome boost with the announcement that former Grand Prix Driver and TV pundit Mark Blundell is to compete in the 2013 British GT series driving for United Autosport in a McLaren MP4 12C. Mark, a former winner at Le mans who also won several CART races in America, will be driving with Richard Meins in one of a pair of cars being entered by United Autosports. Team owner Zak Brown and Alvaro Parente will share the other McLaren and Matt Bell and Mark Patterson will drive the teams Audi R8 LMS

C4R-FEST dates for 2013 Chris Evans has announced the dates of C4R-FEST and a new venue. Car Fest North will take place at Oulton Park on the 2nd to the 4th of August 2013 while Car Fest South will remain at Laverstoke Farm frpm the 23rd to the 25th August 2013.

New FIA GT Series
The new FIA GT Series is a downgrade from last years FIA GT1 World Championship in that the 6 race series is remaining within Europe except for the final race of the season which Š Simon Wright will be in the Middle East. SRO Motorsports Group and the FIA felt that the high costs involved in travelling around the World could not be justified in todays economic climate, so it was decided to remain in Europe and build up a strong grid of regular competitiors. The highly competitive sprint format of the former series will be retained. Ten two car teams have already confirmed their intentions to compete, including the new team of nine times World Rally Champion Sebastien Loeb Racing team from France with McLaren.The calendar is as follows 1st April Nogaro, France 21st April Zolder, Belgium 14th July Zandvoort, Holland 18th August Slovakia Ring, Slovakia 13th October Navarra, Spain and either the 16th or 23rd November for the race at Abu Dhabi in the Middle East. VSCC 2013 Public dates. The Vintage Sports Car Club has announced a busy season for 2013 covering a wide variety of events. The season starts with the now traditional 'Spring Start' race meeting at Silverstone, which this year for the first time, has been expanded to a 2 day meeting over the weekend of the 20th-21st April 2013. Next event is the annual Speed Trial at Curborough, near Lichfield on Sunday 5th May. Next up are a couple of Hill climb meetings at Wiscombe Park in Devon on the 12th May and then at Harewood Hill Climb in Yorkshire on the 1st of June. A week later on the 8th June is a race meeting at Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire. One of the key events of the year is the Double Twelve Sprint and Driving Tests at Brooklands over the weekend of the 15th and 16th June followed by another high-light, the oldest cars at the oldest venue, a hill climb at Shelsley Walsh on the 7th July which for the first time in many years will not clash with the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Remaining in the Midlands, Mallory Park for a race meeting on the 21st July is always guaranteed for some close racing, where spectators can get really close to the action. Prescott Speed Hill Climb over the weekend of the 3rd and 4th of August uses the original hill course instead of the more regular course used by the Bugatti Owners Club. Next stop is South Wales to Pembrey where there is a Sprint on Saturday 17th August followed by a race meeting the next day. Shropshire is the venue for the last Hill Climb of the year at Loton Park, near Shrewsbury on the 14th September, followed by a return to Snetterton for the final race meeting of the year on the 29th September. The competitive season is rounded off with the Autumn Sprint at Goodwood on the 26th October. Š Janet Wright
Stratford Festival of Motoring. The May Bank holiday sees a new event added to the calendar with the brand new Stratford Festival of Motoring taking place on Sunday 5th and Bank Holiday Monday the 6th of May. It is hoped to have around 200 classic and special interest vehicles on display throughout the town during the festival, which will also feature two tours through stunning Warwickshire and Gloucestershire countryside for all entrants. The Test Hills run on Sunday will follow a 60 mile route through some of the steepest hills in the Cotswolds which has been used by Midland motoring manufacturers to test new vehicles pulling power and brakes. Race Retro. The Historic Motorsport Show is back at Stoneleigh Park near Coventry for it's 10th annual event from the 22nd to the 24th February 2013. Following their usual trend, the chosen marques this year are Lotus and Alpine-Renault. Classic Team Lotus will be bringing the 1963 World Championship winning Lotus 25 of Jim Clark as the centre piece of their display. It was the car which won Lotus its first Constructors' World Championship. There will be two other Lotus on the display, along with other Lotus cars on display around the exhibition. To celebrate the rallying success of the Alpine-Renault, there will be several historically significant cars on show including Roger Platt with his 1968 Spanish Alpine A110 Berlinette, Charles Reynolds (Former FIA WRC Rally Manager and ex team manager at Ford and Audi) with his ex-works Alpine A110 Berlinette 1800cc car as driven by Jean Pierre Nicolas and Jean de Alexandris in the 1971 Rally Morocco, and Chris Rabetts with the ex Pat Moss Carlsonn/Elizabeth Crellin A110 Berlinette. Former club chairman Nigel Dodsworth will be bringing an ex-works A110 1800cc Berlinette from the 1973 Championship winning year. Race Retro also has the live Rally Stage action on Saturday and Sunday, where many of the powerful Group B Rally cars from the past are put through their paces. There will also be a display to celebrate 50 years of the Hillman Imp with a display of significant Imp racing and rally cars under the mezzanine in Hall 1. Finally Sir Stirling Moss will make his Race Retro debut on Saturday along with Murray Walker, both appearing on the centre stage. Š Simon Wright
This popular event in the Caribbean is back for its next outing between the 15th and 28th August 2013. Former British Rally Champion Jimmy McRae has contested this event twice, finishing on the podium both times, and has helped the organisers to ensure that this will be the best event so far. Run over two weekends, the first event is a Rallysprint, while the second weekend consists of a tarmac Historic Rally covering some of the most challenging roads the island has to offer. The rest of the 14 days can be spent enjoying the sun and social activities that the island offers. The entry fee of around ÂŁ5,500 includes the cost of shipping one car from Portsmouth to Barbados and back and 2 return flights from London and 12 nights accomodation

F1 Entry Fees Red Bull racing face a massive increase in their entry fees to compete in the 2013 World Championship. The FIA have dramatically changed the entry fee structure to increase revenue. The teams used to pay a flat €309,000 (Euros) [$402,000] to enter. Now there is a new sliding scale which includes a basic $500,000 entry fee, then the Constructors champion pays an additional $6,000 per point they scored in the previous season, while all the other teams pay an additional $5,000 per point scored in the previous season. This means © Janet Wright that to enter the 2013 Formula 1 World Championship is going to cost Red Bull $3.26 million. FIA President Jean Todt is reported to have said that the new system is much fairer as the biggest teams with the biggest budgets will pay more. In any democratic country you pay your taxes depending on your income. For some of the smaller teams, the new structure may help them, as additional features will be included in the entry fee which used to be paid for seperately. Crystal Palace date for 2013 The popular Motorsport at the Palace motor sprint event is confirmed again for 2013. Now in its 4th year, the event will run over the Bank holiday weekend of Sunday 26th and Monday 27th May 2013. London's leading motorsport event will see a wide range of classic and modern cars tackle the tight and twisty parkland course to set fastest time of the day. © Simon Wright New for 2013 is the Kit Car village which will host a range of kit car manufacturers and their cars, while the Classic Racing Motorcycle club will exhibit many examples of two wheeled competition bikes to entertain the public. There will also be a Concours exhibition to bring out the best of the Classic cars on display. The date has been confirmed for the 6th Pageant of To mark the 50th anniversary of the start of the Ford GT40 project, the Witsun Power at Cholmondeley in Cheshire as the trophy race at this years Goodwood Revival will be a Ford GT40 only race, for weekend of the 14th to the 16th June 2013. This the World's finest collection of significant and authentic racing Ford GT40s. unique event continues to celebrate action on land, water and in the air and this year will also celebrate a festival of noise, from the loudest Formula 1 car to the roar of aero engines. Some of the loudest cars, bikes and boats will delight the ear drums of all enthusiasts. Crosslé honoured Dr John Crosslé was awarded the MBE in the Queen's New Years Honours for services to Engineering and Manufacturing in Northern Ireland. A former motor cycle champion who founded his sports car manufacturing business in 1957. He successfully built Formula Ford cars for several decades with drivers such as Nigel Mansell, John Watson and Eddie Irvine starting their careers in a Crosslé single seater racing car. They also built many sports cars and in later years they built cars to compete in sporting trials. John retired in 1997 from one of the longest established racing car construction companies in the UK © Simon Wright

Gabriel Konig (De Freitas) 19th April 1941 to 8th January 2013 Born in Ireland in 1941, Gabriel De Freitas of Beaulieu House, Drogheda, County Lough, Ireland, had a long and illustrious career as one of the top women racing drivers of her era, under the name of Gabriel Konig. She began her racing career in 1962 at Goodwood driving a Lotus Elite. She was also a founding member of the British Women Racing Drivers Club where she held the position of Vice President. She shot to prominence in 1968 driving a very fast 1150cc Mod Sports MG Midget to 18 outright wins, 9 lap records and 2nd overall and class champion in the BRSCC Amasco Mod Sports Championship and the BARC Freddie Dixon Mod Sports Championship. Her winning ways saw her race in many parts of the World including Germany, Denmark,, Italy, Belgium, Monaco, Sao Paulo, Guyana SA and Barbados driving a great variety of cars which included Ferrari GTO, Roger Nathan Hillman Imp, Formula Atlantic Lotus single seater, Nomad 'Tasman' BRM 2 litre Sportscar, Formula Ford, 1380cc Turbo charged Mini Clubman,Renault 5 and 6.3 litre Chevrolet Camaro. In 1973 she was elected as an honorary member of the BRDC. In 1975 she acquired a Blydenstein 2.3 litre Vauxhall Viva and moved to Guyana SA, where she competed with the car, and also in Trinidad until 1990 winning various races and setting new lap records. She returned to her native Beaulieu House to look after her mother and the family estate where Š Pete Austin she assembled a collection of Historic and Classic racing and rally saloons to form the main part of the new car museum. She Š Pete Austin continued to compete across Europe in cars prepared by her partner Malcolm Clark, who was also an accomplished motorsport competitor. Her career spanned 44 years and she was considered to be one of the most successful women racing drivers of her time. When she became a Vice President of the BWRDC she had created a unique Silver Cup, mounted on a black beech wood base which was sourced from the Beaulieu estate. This trophy is the Gabriel Konig Cup and is awarded for outstanding performance by a competitor at International Level. To her Partner, family and friends we offer our sincere condolences. Brooklands Start for London Rally A new motorsport event for London will take place on the 19th April 2013. The Tarmac London Rally for Heros will start from the birthplace of British motor sport, Brooklands and will showcase Britains best rally cars and drivers close to the capital for the first time in over two decades. The MoD has allowed 60 miles of private military roads to be used for the rally and will have specific spectator stages to allow close up views of the action. The event will raise money for the Help 4 Heroes charity. If this rally proves sucessful, it is hoped to expand the rally to National Rally status within 3 years and double the stage mileage to 120 miles. It may be that stages could be added in Windsor Great Park and North Hampshire. After a seasons break for GT4, the new GT4 Trophy has been announced by SRO. New era for Formula Ford. After 45 years of Formula Ford, the series is about to have its biggest change ever with the introduction of Formula Ford Ecoboost 200. The old days of the Kent 1600cc engine single seater are being replaced with the new turbocharged EcoBoost engine and the addition of front and rear wings. This will make the Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Championship of Great Britain the fastest junior single seater in the UK, and with a three year deal to support the BTCC as part of the TOCA package, it will have prime TV coverage. © Janet Wright
Super Tourer Ford Mondeo leads Audi and BMW at last years Silverstone Classic race
After a successful trial race at last years Silverstone Classic, the Historic Sports Car Club (HSCC) are launching a 4 race series for Group 2, Group A and Super Touring Cars at four of the most prestigious historic events in the UK. The first race will be at Thruxton at the new Easter Revival meeting (March 30-31st) followed by the Historic Superprix at Brands Hatch (July 13-14th), the Silverstone Classic (July 26-28th) and the Oulton Park Gold Cup (August 25-26th). © Janet Wright When the series was announced at the Autosport show it was rumoured that former BTCC Champion John Cleland might be interested in taking part in the new series, maybe in one of his old Vauxhall cars Classic and Competition car

The significant changes are a fully adjustable aerodynamic package of front and rear wings, a Formula 3 specification 6 speed sequential gearbox, the 1.6 Ford EcoBoost 200 turbocharged engine and Dunlop slick and wet race tyres. VSCC at the Royal Oak. The Vintage Sports Car Club never do things by half, even when it is a social meeting. The New Years Day meeting at the Royal Oak brought out a large crowd © Simon Wright with an impressive selection of vintage and classic vehicles. Although some of the surrounding countryside was still feeling the effects of flooding from the wet winter, the day was dry and bright and the car park for the vintage cars was hard standing, though by lunch time the car park was full to overflowing. As usual there was a line up of vintage bikes across the top of half of the car park, with a selection of Morgan 3 Morgan 3 wheeler line up wheelers lined up next to them. The © Janet Wright bottom of the car park was filled with a good selection of Austin 7 saloons and down the side of the main car park was a line up of Rolls Royce saloons which added glamour to an already interesting mix of vehicles showing the early history of motorised transport. It is not only British motoring history that was on display.

One of the more unusual cars on display was an old 1920's Fiat 509. Fiat held the land speed record at the time and the technology gained in that endeavour filtered in to the production of the Fiat 509 which was built in Italy between 1925 and 1929, replacing the 501 model. It was the first small capacity Fiat © Simon Wright to be built in large numbers with approximately 90,000 built during this period. It was fitted with an in-line 4 cylinder 990cc engine with overhead camshaft and inclined © Simon Wright valves and a hemispherical © Janet Wright combustion chamber, producing 22 HP from a single carburettor and a 3 speed © Simon Wright manual gearbox driving the rear wheels. Four wheel drum brakes completed the sporty image. It was offered as a 2/4 door saloon, or cabriolet or a 2 door spyder. From 1928 the 509 was offered for sale with insurance. It was a Fiat 509 which also won the 1928 Monte Carlo Rally driven by Frenchman Jacques Bignan. Classic and Competition car

The bright weather allowed the owners of convertibles to enjoy the sunshine. All makes of the British motoring history were on show with many of our previous major manufacturers early examples showing the diversity of manufacturers, many of which have long since disappeared. This 1911 White GA was a fine example of the American brand. Fitted with a 3.7 litre engine and 4 speed gearbox, 4th being overdrive, driven by a leather cone clutch. The Delahaye design engine is a total loss system where the oil is drip fed from the bulkhead in the car. The side lamps run on paraffin and although the headlights have been converted to electric, they were originally acetylene. © Simon Wright

Archive Picture of the month By Pete Austin
As can be seen from two other photographs in this issue Rosemary Smith is no stranger to being photographed on the bonnet of a car and this months archive image is no exception. She is pictured here at Crystal Palace before the start of the 1968 London to Sydney Marathon perched on the wing of her works Ford Lotus Cortina. Rosemary is perhaps best remembered for her outright victory in the 1965 Tulip Rally together with many other Coupe de Dames awards. Alongside her is co-driver Lucette Pointet who was no mean competitor in her own right winning the Coupe de Dames in the 1965 East African Safari and 1966 Monte Carlo. January means the start of the © Simon Wright new year and the Autosport International Show at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) near Birmingham. This year the show paid tribute to Sir Jackie Stewart on the 40th anniversary of his third World Championship with a display of some of the cars he raced during his illustrious career, including all three World Championship winning Grand Prix cars. The always popular Formula 1 Grid had contemporary cars from the majority of teams that contested the 2012 F1 World Championship, though not all the cars on display were from last years World Championship. There was a superb tribute to English Rally legend and former World Champion Richard Burns with a display of some of his past rally cars, including various Peugeot and Subaru models. The Historic Sports Car Club paid homage to the history of the British Touring Glamour and cars - Must Car Championship with their display of be the Autosport Show Touring Cars through the decades and also announced that they are supporting a Super Touring Car Trophy in 2013 with a four race series starting at Thruxton, then going to Brands Hatch, Silverstone and Oulton Park. The series will be open to cars conforming to Super Touring regulations from the 1990s, Group 2 cars and Group A cars and follows the success of a race that they ran at last years Silverstone Classic. The current BTCC cars were displayed on a stand with a replica Dunlop bridge display, with current drivers making guest appearances on the stand to sign autographs and pose for photos. The stand included Champion Gordon Shedden's Honda Civic, the MG6 of Jason Plato, the Audi of Rob Austin, the Proton of Dan Welch and the new Toyota of Dave Newsham. The various GT championships also had displays with the Britcar display containing the championship winning Lotus Evora along side an Aston Martin and Ginetta, the

GT Cup had a Ferrari and a Chevron, while the British GT championship had a major display with Aston Martin, McLaren, Nissan, Ferrari, Mazda and Ginetta all represented along with a single F3 car. The Autosport stage was busy with various motor sport celebrities being interviewed over the 4 days of the show, and it usually drew large crowds to see and hear their heroes. Thursday and Friday are trade days, where their is a large hall given over to firms to display their engineering talents The Nissan Deltawing is a revolutionary new design which is powered by a Nissan DIG-T four cylinder 1.6 litre engine, producing 300bhp. With an all in weight of just 575kg including fuel and driver, it is a light weight option for long distance racing. It made its debut at Le Mans © Simon Wright in 2012. and meet existing and prospective clients. Then on Saturday and Sunday when the show is open to the public, this area is converted in to another show hall containing Oval Racing and extreme motorsport. This allows all the hot rod, 'banger' and other short circuit oval racers to display their vehicles, some of which are every bit as technically advanced as their normal circuit racing brothers. Finally the Performance Car show is always run in conjunction with the Autosport Show and covers high performance road and track day cars. M-Sport unveil Fiesta WRC By Mick Herring. When Ford announced their withdrawal of factory support at the end of 2012, the future of Malcolm Wilson's MSport team's participation in the World Rally Championship looked in doubt. However, the signing of a major deal with Qatar state will keep it in the series. Thursday 10th January 2013 saw a delighted Wilson and 25 year old Norwegian rally driver, Mads Ostberg unveil the stunning new Qatar liveried Ford Fiesta RS WRC on the Autosport stage. Prior to the show Ostberg had already completed two and a half days testing, with one more day of testing to complete before the cars were due to start the season opening Monte Carlo Rally, in which he would finish 6th. Ostberg will be joined again in the M-Sport team by Russian Evgeny Novikov and new recruit, Belgian Thierry Neuville to drive the turbocharged 1600cc, 300bhp four cylinder, permanent 4 wheel-drive RS WRC Fiesta. © Mick Herring

Radical launch their first closed car. By Mick Herring © Mick Herring Following the successful launch of their SR3SL (Street Legal) at Autosport 2012 (see January and February 2012 issues of CCC for story and my passenger seat impressions), Radical chose the Autosport Show for the worldwide launch of their first closed car, the Radical RXC (Radical Xtreme Coupe) and also the entry level SR1. With 1600 cars built to date, 200 in 2012, and starting the build of a new car every working day, Radical boss Phil Abbott described it as a milestone car in the company's history as he and former Le Mans winner, Andy Wallace, unveiled the LMP2-inspired RXC to the large audience. Radical's aim is to deliver "Supercar" performance at one third the price. Phil declared the RXC as a "ubiquitous clean sheet of paper design" by Nick Walford utilising the principles evolved from the Radical SR8 and with considerable input from chief development driver Andy Wallace. The high-waisted, gullwing doored, 900 kilogram RXC, with push-rod suspension and 7-speed sequential paddle-change transaxle, is powered by the latest Ford Cyclone 3.7 litre V6 and retains its twin-independent variable cam timing (Ti-VCT) to produce 380bhp, equating to 422 bhp/ tonne. This cost-effective, production based engine has a design life of 200,000 kms between rebuilds.Other vital statistics are a © Mick Herring 0-60 time of 2.8secs, top speed 175mph and a projected cost of £89,500.00 plus VAT. Being a racing car designed for the road, it comes with easy change suspension for the transition from road to race © Mick Herring and vice-versa. The RXC is to be shipped to America for 10,000 kms of testing by Wallace in Nevada before it is released to race in series' including Britcar, GT Cup, V de V and Dutch Supercars. Coys Auction at Autosport International. The annual sale always draws some interesting cars, and this year one of the best known cars belonged to Queen singer Freddy Mercury. His Rolls Royce Silver Shadow (estimated value of £9-11,000) which he used until his death in 1991, went for a record £74,000 to a Russian businessman. The highest price went for a 1935 BMW Willis © Simon Wright special which sold for £154,000 to an American telephone bidder. Another high value went for a 1972 Porsche 911S which had been 1935 BMW rebuilt to ST specification and sold Freddy Mercury Willis Special Rolls Royce for £125,000. Piston Heads Performance Car Show Run in conjuction with the Autosport Racing Car Show,this Performance car show allows car clubs and manufacturers to show high performace road and track day cars to fellow enthusiasts. One of the biggest and best displays is the Porsche Owners Club, © Janet Wright which this year Porsche club area had a range of © Simon Wright racing Porsches on display along with an extemely rapid German Police Car and a couple of superb road versions. Many high performance cars were on show including the McLaren MP4-12C, various Noble models, Lamborghini, Ferrari and Mercedes. Also several new cars were announced at the show, including the Mexican Mastretta MXT-R McLaren MP4-12C GT3 and the Ariel Atom 3.5. The Atom is one of the fastest cars money can buy with the supercharged 2.0 litre Honda iVTEC engine boosted to 310 bhp. The Pulse GT1 This one off track day car was built from a 1990s racer and was originally built for the British GT series, fitted with a Jaguar XJ220 engine delivering 860 BHP, but only did one test session before being stored due to a rule change. The back end was canablised for other projects and the car left. Now fitted with an 2.7 litre twin turbocharged Audi RS4 V6 engine which produces 610 bhp and mated to a 6 speed sequential gearbox. The three seater has plenty of power for road and track days after a complete rebuild.

A technical masterpiece that, hopefully, even the great Ettore Bugatti would have approved of. As can be seen from the photo, what is termed the W16 is two narrow angle V8s married together. The staggered pattern of the cylinders and, thus the configuration of the cylinder heads determines that only two camshafts are required per bank. With a capacity of 8 litres and utilising four turbochargers, the sixty four valve engine produced between 1,000 and nearly 1,200 bhp depending on specification.

The Mexican built MXT-R was announced at the Autosport show. A modified version of the two year old MXT, the R version is the first step towards a racing version. Engine power is increased to 300 bhp and overall weight reduced to 950 kg. An adjustable carbon fibre rear wing and front splitter provide extra downforce to improve the handling. Stopping power is provided by 330 mm discs with 6 pot calipers at the front and 300 mm discs and 4 pot calipers at the rear. Price $63,000

SMITH COMPLETES WINNING MSC F5000 SERIES TRIFECTA AT HAMPTON DOWNS Kiwi racing great Ken Smith (Lola T332) was the toast of the large crowd at the first NZ Festival of Motor Racing - celebrating Denny Hulme meeting at Hampton Downs today, the 71-year-old in his 55th year of competition at a national level completing a winning MSC NZ F5000 Tasman Revival Series trifecta with a lights-to-flag win in the final 15-lap feature. Defending MSC series champion Steve Ross (McRae GM1) ran the wily veteran close - the margin at the chequered flag just 0.139 of a second - and fastest

qualifier Clark Proctor (March 73A-1) made up time on both over the last three laps but as was the case in the other two MSC series races over the weekend Smith was in front when it counted. "Clark actually said to me before the race that if I got alongside him he would let me go because he reckoned he'd sooner hunt me down for 15 laps rather than have me hunt him down and I was fine with that, " chuckled Smith. " And Steve Ross? " He did get alongside me at one stage with both of us sliding around a Page

bit but I knew I could get four or five car lengths on him coming out of that final corner but whether I could have held him out for another one lap or 10 I don't know."
Smith and Proctor got the better of Ross off the rolling start but Ross had muscled his way past Proctor by the second lap and was ahead of the first of the UK visitors, Greg Thornton (McRae GM1), fast-starting Australian Paul Zazryn (Lola T332) and fellow visitors Peter Dunn (March 73A/05), Michael Whatley (Surtees TS8) and Mark Dwyer (Lola T400) when the yellow flag came out while safety workers retrieved Bill Hemming's stranded Elfin MR8. After two laps under the yellow flag Smith got the best of the restart with Ross and Proctor tucking in behind and easing away from Thornton, Zazryn, Whatley, Dwyer, Dunn and Brett Willis (Lola T330). Australian driver Bryan Sala struggled with an engine issue, qualifying 13th but As the race progressed Thornton retained a lonely fourth place, failing to finish today's race. Zazryn, Wrigley and Dwyer remained close and category young gun Alan Dunkley (Lola T142) started making his presence felt. Brett Willis was also moving forward, catching and passing Dwyer and closing on Whatley. On the last lap Dunn managed to find a way past Paul Zazryn as did Alan Dunkley on Mark Dwyer. Zazryn was again the first of the Australian drivers home and expressed himself very happy with his progress. "To come over here, learn the track, make a few changes to the car and do what we've done, it's been fantastic," he said. "I like to have a go and that's exactly what I've been able to do this weekend." Dunkley expressed similar sentiments after his successful last lap ambush on Mark Dwyer. "I wasn't dead set on passing him," said the 24-year-old who drives the oldest car in the field, "but when I saw an opportunity I pulled out one of my old karting moves, parked myself where he wanted to be mid-corner then kicked the Classic and Competition car

Veteran Michael Whatley had a similar tale to tell, despite losing fourth gear - and with it a couple of hard-won places - over the last two laps. "I've always been good on cold tyres at the beginning of a race," he explained. "My car slides all over the place anyway so I guess I'm used to it." Happy, meanwhile, just to be back on the grid at the meeting was former New Zealand saloon car ace, Peter Sundberg who joined the MSC F5000 series three years ago but did not run last season. "I've had some health issues, which are now resolved fortunately, so yesterday was my first time back in the car in two years," he said."It's great to be back too, and the car is fantastic, though to be fair I have spent most of the time this weekend running round on my own. It would have been nice to have been able to follow someone around and learn something but when I was out there One new car debuted over the weekend was Auckland series stalwart Poul Christie's there was no way I was going to let anyone catch me up!" ex Peter Gethin McLaren M10B. Race 2 (Sun 8 laps) Earlier in the day Smith won the second MSC race of the weekend after Š Fast Company/GroundSky getting the better of early race leader Clark Proctor as the pair began lapping the tail-enders on the penultimate lap. At that stage of the day the track was damp with the lightest of rain showers drifting across the circuit as the race progressed. Off the rolling start the order was Proctor, Smith, Ross and Thornton but the later spun exiting Turn 7 elevating Class 2 pace-setter Michael Whatley to tuck in behind Ross and in front of Brett Willis, and Peter Dunn and category young gun Alan Dunkley to catch up. A lap later Dunkley had got by Dunn and Willis and he and Whatley quickly closed on Steve Ross. Willis stayed in front of Dunn for one more lap before spinning exited the first turn and losing two places.. While Proctor and Smith battled for the lead, Whatley and Dunkley continued to dispute fourth and fifth with Dunkley finally getting past on the fifth lap. Kiwi racing great Ken Smith won all three MSC NZ F5000 Tasman Cup Whatley was back in front a lap later but the pair remained close and Revival series races at Hampton Downs over the weekend in his freshly rebuilt Lola T332. afterwards said that the changing track conditions actually played into their Classic and Competition car

hands. "My car has got little or no grip on a good day anyway so it really wasn't that much different for me," joked Whatley. " "Yeah, we had an awesome race," agreed Dunkley."I love it when the conditions are tricky 'coz I can really take advantage of them in the old car. Michael had more speed through Turn 1 and down the straight but I was hustling him like you wouldn't believe through the infield, and when I got past him it was after getting a better drive on the inside out of Turn 8 then getting a better run out of Turn 9." After Willis spun Peter Dunn inherited sixth place with Paul Zazryn seventh, Willis recovering to claim eighth, Ian Clements driving Lindsay O'Donnell's Begg FM5 ninth and Shayne Windelburn 10th. Windelburn was on a charge though, working his way from 14th place on the grid to ninth at the flag. David Abbott had started from P9 on the grid but was a casualty of the slippery track conditions, grazing the armco exiting the downhill Turn 9 hairpin on the second lap. "I was behind Peter Sundberg," he explained. "Peter lost it in front of me and veered off to to the right very close to the armco on the outside of the circuit. I got round him but as I accelerated it was very similar to Ken's crash (at Manfeild 14 months ago). One wheel got grip, the other didn't and I was just a passenger. When I hit the wet grass on the inside the car seemed to accelerate and luckily I only grazed the armco, to the point where I was surprised when I stopped to see that the front left wheel was still attached to the car." Race 1 (Sat 8 laps) In the first MSC race of the weekend in fine, dry conditions on Saturday afternoon Proctor just edged an aggressive Smith out on the run through the first turn but Smith found a way past on the third lap and started pulling away from Proctor as the latter struggled with a gear selection issue. That allowed defending series champion Ross - who tucked in behind Proctor and Smith at the start - to close on then also pass Proctor and cross the finish line just under a second behind Smith with Proctor hanging on for third, Brett Willis fourth and the first of the visiting contingent of overseas drivers, Greg Thornton fifth. Early on in the eight lap race the interest behind Smith, Proctor and Ross was in the battle between fast-starting Australian visitor Paul Zazryn Š Fast Company/GroundSky and Brett Willis. Zazryn made the early running but Willis wore him down and went on to cross the line in fourth place. Also impressing was Greg Thornton. After issues in qualifying which saw him start the race from P16 on the grid Thornton stormed through the field to cross the line in fifth place between Willis and Zazryn. Monaco-based compatriot Peter Dunn was the best of the Northern Hemisphere visitors in qualifying, setting the fourth quickest time in his March 73A/05, but it was actually Class A (for older cars) pace-setter Michael Whatley who got the best start and spent the early laps in sixth place ahead of Dunn and Mark Dwyer (Lola T400) Dunn eventually got past, as later on did Thornton, but Dwyer ended up slipping back down the field after losing second gear and eventually pulling in with two laps to go. Classic Car of the Month Gordon Keeble and De Bruyne GT By Mick Herring. The Gordon Keeble is an incredibly rare sight on the roads of Britain these days, unsurprising when you consider it was only in (limited) production for four years between 1963 and 1967, despite there being a prototype at the Geneva Motor Show in 1960. Interesting cars in their own right but even rarer is the De Bruyne GT which followed it. The Gordon Keeble was a collaboration between John Gordon, formerly of the Peerless car company and Jim Keeble. It was distinguished by its badge, depicting a Tortoise and its "Chinese Eye" twin slanted headlamp arrangement. The prototype chassis had a body designed by Giugiaro and built, in aluminium, by Bertone in Italy.

Power would, ultimately, be supplied by a 5.4 litre Chevrolet Corvette engine/gearbox combination and the body material changed to fibreglass for production cars. Production would eventually amount to exactly 100 cars, most sold at an unrealistically low price of less than £3,000, given their equipment specification and expensive build costs. The inevitable liquidation would see the project change hands in 1965 after the first 90 cars had been built before production halted in 1967. The Gordon Keeble owners club claim that over ninety examples still exist, one of the lost examples being turned into a Sunbeam Rapier "lookalike" Supersaloon racing car by Martin Kent, having been built from a crashed example. The rights to the car were acquired in 1968 by American John De Bruyne but only a further two cars were built and displayed at that year's New York Motor Show, with changes to the front and rear styling shown here before Classic and Competition car

glassfibre body was fitted with sound proofing material throughout and wilton carpeting was fitted to both the interior and boot. The white GT in these pictures is thought to be the only GT in existance as the other de Bruyne prototype was a mid engined coupe.

An attractive and powerful car in either guise and a good example of the luxury European styled and built genre typified by De Tomaso and Iso in the 1960s with solid American V8 powerplants. The General Motors Chevrolet 5.3 litre V8 engines fitted to the de Bruyne Grand Touring produced 300 bhp, which mated to the 4 speed transmission in the light weight body gave good performance with a reported top speed of around 140 mph. Matched to front independent wishbone suspension and de Dion axle with 4 trailing arms watts linkage rear suspension, with coil spring and aircraft type shock absorbers all round and disc brakes on all four wheels, the multitube spaceframe chassis made the car a comfortable high speed GT car. The car also had luxury features such as power assisted rack and pinion steering, electric roll up windows on both doors, reclining seats, walnut facia and radio with twin speakers. The Historic Rally Car Register open day took place at the Heritage Motor Centre at Gaydon at the begining of January. At the same time the Imp club decided to start their 50th year celebrations with a turnout of Imps on the same day. With this in mind, the HRCR open day had several rally Imps on display inside and their special guest was former Imp rally driver Rosemary Smith. The majority of the open day is for rally event organisers to display information about forthcoming events during the year, but there is always a display of historic rally cars inside and outside the conference centre at the Heritage museum. This year there were several Imps outside as well, and Rosemary Smith was quite happy to pose for photos with the various Imps and their owners. There was an interesting selection of Historic Rally cars outside, including one MkII Ford Escort, an Alfa Romeo GTV, Ford Cortina Mk1, Peugeot 504, Mini Cooper, Fiat 500, Ford Escort Mk1, Lancia Fulvia, Opel Manta, Skoda, MGB, Renault Alpine, and a Jaguar XK150. The Imp collection contained Hillman and Sunbeam variations, including a Stiletto and a Huskey van plus a Couple of Clan Crusaders which are based on the Imp.

Driving a Hillman Imp, Rosemary took outright victory in the 1965 Tulip Rally with Valerie Domleo. Orginally from Ireland, born in Dublin in 1937, she was in entertaining form on the microphone at the open day, regaling the audience with tales from her rally adventures. She was asked at one point if accidents were always the fault of the codriver? She replied No, one year on the Monte Carlo Rally she was chasing Timo Makinen in the dark. Not knowing who he was, she decided to try and keep up with him in the dark. At one point she could see his lights straight ahead and accelerated to catch him, not realising that the road snaked around the mountain. She drove straight off the side of the mountain, injuring her co-driver in the process! She was controversially disqualified from the 1966 Monte Carlo Rally along with 9 other cars, after winning the Coupe des Dames. It was the year that all the top British cars were disqualified, giving overall victory to Pauli Toivonen in a Citroen ID after Citroen protested the leading cars. Rosemary said she would never return to the event unless the decision was reversed. She also took victories in the 1967 and 1969 Cork 20 Rally in the Hillman Imp and won the ladies prize several times on the Scottish Rally, the Circuit of Ireland Rally and the Alpine Rally and once on the Acropolis Rally. She is still a sprightly lady as she was willing to climb up on the bonnet and sit on the roof of one of the Hillman Imps on display at the open day for photographers to take pictures.
