Editorial This issue sees a large number of GT reports and it is great to see that the GT racing category is currently proving so sucessful in its present form all around the World. We also have reports from two car festivals taking part in town centres. These are a great way to bring the cars to the people. Bristol has enjoyed their Italian car festival for many years around the streets of the old town, and Worcester's Motor Festival continues to grow in popularity. Warwick has a Retro car festival in the centre of the town on an annual basis and now we can add Stratford upon A little piece of motor sport history was made at the International Trophy meeting at Silverstone when Jeremy Smith took a flag to flag victory in the first of the two Derek Bell trophy races in his Avon to the growing list. W125 at Donington Historic Festival Kevin Wheatcroft, Chairman and Owner of Donington Park drove the fabulous replica 1937 Mercedes-Benz W125 Grand Prix Car for a demonstration at the Donington Historic Festival. The car was a project he started with his late father Tom Wheatcroft, founder of Donington Park and the Donington Grand Prix Collection. During research for the project, Kevin managed to obtain a complete set of working drawings for the original W125. Then the Schlumpf Collection allowed them to borrow an original W125 as raced by Hermann Lang at the 1937 Donington Grand Prix. The car took around 18,000 hours to build and even sounds like the original. June 2013 Classic and Competition car

Zoe Wenham A leading British Women Racing Drivers Club member, Zoe Wenham has had a busy month during May. With two class wins in the British GT Championship at the Oulton Park round with her co-driver Declan Jones in April at the wheel of the Century Motorsport Ginetta G50, she managed a further 2nd in class at Rockingham at the begining of the month. As well as celebrating her 19th birthday and driving in the Silverstone 500 3 hour race, Zoe also took time from her busy training schedule to display her british GT championship contending Ginetta G50 GT4 at the Worcester Motor Festival. Born in Tewksbury, Gloucester, not that far from Worcester, Zoe spent most of the day talking to members of the public, explaining about her car and showing people around the car. The following weekend, she was sharing the car with Declan in the 3 hour, 500 mile race around the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit. Having built up her training schedule to meet the gruelling physical challenges of 40 minute driving stints around the full Grand Prix circuit, Zoe and Declan finished in 34th overall having managed to complete 54 laps. Unfortunately, after the race it was found that they had exceeded the Š Janet Wright

time for one driver to be behind the wheel, so a time penalty of 3 minutes 20 seconds was added to their overall time. It did not alter their finishing position. After the Silverstone 4th round, Zoe and Declan retain the lead of the British GT4 Championship. Page 6

Martin Short wins two races in different classes THE FIFTH PEKING TO PARIS RALLY at one meeting in the same car! Preparation standards were put to the test on the first day of the fifth Peking to © Mick Herring Paris Rally as 96 cars set off from the Great Wall of China 28th May on the start of their 7,500-mile journey. Sent on their way by Chinese dragon dancers, five international TV crews, and a crowd of over 2,000 well-wishers, the teams found themselves and their cars tested from the outset. But the Citroen DS 23 from Australians Bob Sherrard and Peter Washington (Car 87) glided over the rough stuff, and just hoisted up its adjustable suspension to sail through floodwater. The car that won the 1974 World Cup Rally across the Sahara in the hands of Jim Reddiex and Ken Tubman made light work of the day’s challenges. For more information on the Peking to Paris Rally or any future Endurance Rally Association event – call +44 (0) 1235 831221 or visit www.endurorally.com. From Andrea Seed, PR Director, Poppyseed Media Ltd The opening round of the GT Cup at Donington saw Martin short win the first race in a Ferrari 458 Challenge car in the GTC class and then win the third race with the same car in the GTO class. After the first race, there was a technical debate and the car was reclassified in to the GTO class.

Rare Bugatti T39. David Hands, the London based Australian brought his rate Bugatti T39 to the Donington Historic festival. The car is similar to the Type 35C but is fitted with a smaller 1.5 litre straight eight engine using a shorter stroke crankshaft. Only 10 were built between 1926 and 1929. The model dominated the 1926 Grand Prix season with Jules Goux winning in France and Spain (San Sebastian Grand Prix of Europe) and Louis Charavel winning in Italy which gave Bugatti the AIACR World Manufacturers' Championship. Such was the dominance that the car finished 1st 2nd and 3rd in France (Goux, Meo Costantini, Pierre de Vicaya) and in Italy (Charavel, Costantini, Goux). David's car was one that competed in the 1926 Italian Grand Prix before being shipped to Australia. David managed to finish both races at the Donington Historic Festival, coming home 21st in race one and 17th in race two. Page 10

SPARKLING SHELSLEY VICTORIES FOR CHAMPION WILLIS Reigning British Hill Climb Champion Trevor Willis put in a sparkling performance to win both run-off rounds 3 and 4 of the Midland Championship ‘Speed into Spring’ event held at Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb on Sunday 5th May 2013. In perfect conditions Willis, who now lives locally, drove his new OMS 28 Powertec racing car up the iconic hill in 24.31 and 24.21 seconds respectively, beating Deryk Young in a Gould in the morning session and Will Hall in a Force in the afternoon run-off.

Trevor Willis causing sparks at Crossing.

Marsh Gibbon driver Rob Stevens put on a fine show for the crowds in his Purple supercharged Force SR4 to take fourth spot in both run-offs with Simon Moyse, of Bicester, also gaining points with the streamlined new bike-engined Gould GR59. Ladies hill record holder Sue Young of Hereford, sharing the 4-litre Gould GR51 with husband Deryk, also took points with committed drives in both of the

run-offs. Current Midland Champion, Mike Turpin, of Hereford, made a positive start in defence of his title by winning the Modified Series Production Sports Cars Class in his Vauxhall VX220. An extra ‘hot rod’ spectacle for visitors was a special class for competitors in the SBD HSA Speed Championship for Period Defined Cars with side-valve engine blocks, which included a Batten Special, Ballamy Ford V8, Nota Arnold and a Ford V8 Pickup. It was a ‘Star Wars’ triumph in the fully supported 1100cc racing car class with Simon Fidoe taking top spot in his Empire, while Force drivers George Brown and Darren Gumbley took second and third, with the top two drivers also making the run-offs. New for this year was the Cheltenham Porsche sponsored Championship for road-going cars driven by ‘B’ licence holders, which provided a wide variety of cars and the weekend was also a round of the Paul Matty Sports Cars Lotus Championship. The Morris Register had a large display of vehicles from over the years on show to celebrate 100 years of Morris and several paraded up the hill on Sunday lunchtime. Best of British - Silverstone Classic Media Day 8th May By Mick Herring.

© Janet Wright

The essential British Sportscar of the 1950s and 60s came rolled into three, not just one car at Silverstone recently. I thought I knew what to expect from an E-type Jaguar, how wrong could I be? In racing guise, Andy Dee-Crowne's car was so much more alive and twitchy than any road car. The same "sawing" at the wheel, that I witnessed in period ModSports cars, is still © Simon Wright there to determine and establish frontend grip and the same progression to oversteer too,

from the youngest and most sophisticated of my trio today. The familiar 6-cylinder bark of the triple-Webbered XK engine added to the experience as it pulled smoothly down every straight like a train. Next, the pristine white AC Cobra of Rory Henderson who, despite only two full seasons of racing, tamed so well the "widow maker" he shares with father Gavin. The same wheel applications as the E-type and same progressive slide but accompanied by the big V8 thunder and quad Webbers. Show it a straight, the Cobra became more like © Mick Herring an aeroplane than a train and what a sound-track that went with every heal and toe downchange in the Cobra. A peculiar phenomenon with the Cobra on each lap was at Silverstone's uphill left hand hairpin, third gear and off-cam, the mighty V8 gave a low down grumble, you could smell petrol wafting back through the bonnet vent. With so much cam overlap it was probably actually pushing a little fuel back through the intakes but once on the throttle it soon went in the right direction with predictable results. With so much racing history behind the car, it was appropriate to save the famous ex-Cliff Davis Tojeiro-Bristol 2 litre sportscar "LOY 500" until last.

Built in 1953 by John Tojeiro, this car's chassis evolved into the design of the AC Ace and, ultimately, the AC Cobra. © Simon Wright Both cars utilised transverse leaf springs for their front and rear suspension and it is surprising how effective this design still is. My driver was none other than 2007 British GT co-champion Bradley Ellis and whilst so many cars would pass you down the straights, including more modern Porsches, they must have been surprised how close © Mick Herring the lightweight Tojeiro stayed with them through the corners, its 2litre, 6 cylinder engine screaming away relentlessly. My thanks once again to the owners and drivers of these three iconic cars So different but so similar. Rule Britannia. Over 1,000 Porsche have been confirmed for this years Silverstone Classic event which is celebrating 50 years of the Porsche 911. It has also been confirmed that Derek Bell MBE will be joining the celebrations. Since it was first unveiled at the 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show, the iconic 911 has become the Worlds most sucessful sportscar with more than 820,000 having been sold worldwide. It is planned that 911 Porsche 911's will take to the circuit at the Silverstone Classic at the same time and with over 1,000 entries confirmed as attending, this goal looks like it will be achieved. The parade is scheduled for lunchtime on Sunday 28th July 2013 and should include past and present models such as the Carrera, Rs, RSR, GT, Speedster, Targa and Turbo variants. © Pete Austin

Independant Porsche Enthusiasts Club meeting, Coventry.

Coventry Transport museum is one of the best in the country being located in the City Centre, the heart of the old industrial Midlands. Coventry was also the home of many major British Motor manufacturers whose cars are displayed in the museum. Outside the museum is Millenium Place, a magnificent square which is used many times during the year to hold car displays, adding extra initatives for people to visit the museum - all of which is free. In April, the Independent Porsche Enthusiast Club held a meeting outside the museum with a reasonable selection of cars in attendence on what was a bright , dry but cold day.Think of porsche and most people will think of the 911, which has to be the most iconic Porsche design. But there have been other designs of Porsche and these were well represented in the turn out at Coventry.

GT Cup Brands Hatch G P Circuit. 11th/12th May By Mick Herring. The opportunity to race on Brands Hatch's Grand Prix circuit doesn't occur that often, it is to be savoured even if the track is wet and greasy as was the case for Saturday's 40 minute encounter. With a brief rain respite at the race start, you could see whose aero was working by the huge plumes of spray the cars threw up. Lee Mowle led away in this race and a safety car that pinned his BMW Z4 in 2nd place, leaving only 8 minutes of racing to the flag would see him carve his way through back markers, as the rain returned, regaining the lead from the Dwane/Balfe Ferrari 458 Challenge, which would drop back to 7th by the end. Mike Edmonds, having taken over the M-Tech 458 GT3 from Derek Johnston closed to within 0.9secs, with John Dhillon's 458 GT3 another 5.3secs adrift in

Donington Historic Festival 3rd-5th May. By Simon Wright and Pete Austin with additional photos by Mick Herring and Janet Wright.

This year the third running of the annual Donington Historic Festival (DHF) expanded to three days to allow for more track action. Over 20,000 people attended the Festival, with an 18 race programme, which was organised to pay tribute to Ayrton Senna who won a famous victory twenty years ago in the wet at the European Grand Prix held at Donington Park in 1993. Unfortunately a shadow was cast over the fantastic meeting when on the third day, the meeting was cut short after a tragic accident claimed the life of historic Mini racing driver Christian Devereux. The meeting drew a wide range of historic categories together, covering a very broad spread of racing categories, from Vintage Grand Prix cars right through to modern Group C Le Mans sports cars. There was also fantastic rally car action on a short circuit set up on the Melbourne loop behind the Pre-63 GT Start paddock, and the infield of the circuit was given over to classic car clubs to display members' cars. © Simon Wright The meeting started on Friday with three races in the afternoon. First out was the Jaguar E-Type challenge race for the first of two races over the weekend. John Pearson won the first race © Janet Wright

Pete Morton driving his Lightning Envoyette won both the Formula Junior races on Friday and Saturday. A glorious field of cars came out for the final race on Friday, a 75 minute Pre-63 GT race. Four Ferrari 250 SWBs, four porsche 356s, three Aston Martin DB4s and an AC Cobra were amongst those taking to the track for this 1 1/4 hour race.Fastest

The fastest cars on track had got to be the Formula There were all kinds of interesting cars on display in the infield, including these datsun 240Zs 2 single seaters, whose speed as they approached the chicane at the end of the Dunlop straight made you feel sure they were not going to make the turn…but they did. Martin Stretton claimed Pole position in a time of 1 minute 5.227 seconds in his March 742. Andrew Smith (742) and Peter Meyrick (782) made it a March 1-2-3 in practice. The race was fast and furious and Red flagged at the end of the first lap so the March of Frazer Gibney could be recovered after an early off and it did not restart the first race. From the second start, the Chevron B40 of Martin O'Connell made a superb start and had what appeared to be © Janet Wright a massive 1.239 second lead at the end of the first lap from the scrapping March of Martin Stretton and the Ralt RT1 of Nick Flemming. The Ralt of Flemmimg soon established itself in 2nd and closed the gap to take the lead on lap 8. The action behind Flemming was more intense than ever with Meyrick joining in the battle for 2nd with Stretton, Smith and O'Connell. On the tenth lap, as the battle for second place reached the start straight, they came across a back marker and they screamed past him, two each side. Martin Stretton emerged in 2nd and hunted down the Ralt which retired on lap 18 giving Stretton a hard fought win from a very close Andrew Smith, only 0.501 of a second behind at the finish. Grant Tromans took 3rd at the end in another Chevron B42. VSCC Speed Trials Curborough. 5th May 2013. By Simon & Janet Wright. The May Day Bank holiday weekend brought a bright day to Curborough, © Janet Wright near Lichfield, where the VSCC competitiors assembed for the annual Speed Trials. A large crowd gathered to spectate, having first negotiated the local half marathon run which passed right past the entrance to the sprint circuit. The spectator car park had probably as much value as the paddock, with many VSCC members arriving in vintage cars as old as the Fastest Vintage car Charles Martin 1930/28 Morgan Special cars competing on the track. Although the weather was bright and dry, it was a little cold during morning practice, but did warm up before the © Simon Wright afternoon competition, which allowed several class records to be broken. The overall winner was always likely to come from Winner of the Curborough Trophy - Mac Hulbert ERA R4D the later racing car classes and this proved to be the case. Mac Hulbert in his 1938 ERA R4D only needed one timed run to set fastest time overall at 36.27 seconds, a new class record for the circuit, to win the Curborough Trophy. Another ERA made the Overall awards list with Terry Crabb in his ERA R12C being the fastest pre-war not winning FTD with a time of 37.81 seconds while Charlie Martin in his Morgan Special was the fastest Vintage car with a time of 38.53 seconds. The class battles were all intense but probably one of the most spectacular winners was Mark Walker, who as usual had his 1905 Darracq 200HP sideways around most of the bends as he set his class

GT Cup Donington 27th/28th April

A wet start to the first race with the FF Corsa Ferrari of Alex Martin taking an early lead,

By Mick Herring. Saturday's 40 minute GT Cup race at Donington and the morning's qualifying both endured all four seasons in one day. Mike Donovan's Porsche throttle stuck open in qualifying, only his quick thinking, to kill the engine and straight-line Redgate would see his minimal intrusion into the gravel trap. Sunshine, rain and hail rendered it a wet race for the twenty-six cars. A combination of Avgas and rain saw reigning champion, Derek Johnston's Ferrari 458, slip off at McLeans from 2nd on lap 1, he and co-driver, Mike Edmonds having to work hard to regain an eventual 6th. Pole man, Alex Martin established a lead but was finally hunted down by Martin Short and John Dhillon. A field-bunching safety car period, through to the pit window opening, saw nine cars take their mandatory 60 second stop quickly after, most opting for slicks at the driver change-over. The race largely retained its order until the flag to see Ferrari 458s, albeit of different Š Mick Herring

specifications, take the top three places. Martin Short was victor 16.3secs ahead of John Dhillon with Alex Martin in 3rd, ahead of Jordan Witt's Chevron GT3. Nick and Harry Whale brought their Porsche 997 GT3 home in 5th. Conditions improved for Sunday's two 25 minute sprints, Derek Johnston making no mistake in the first race for a pole-to-flag victory by 26.6secs ahead of Martin Short's, re-classified technically to GTO overnight, Ferrari 458. John Dhillon was 3rd ahead of the first non-Ferrari, Jordan Witt's Chevron GT3. The next five places were also taken by Ferraris, Alex Martin 5th, Mick Race 1 winner Martin Short in the GTC Ferrari 458 Challenge

Dwane 6th, Shamus Jennings 7th, Peter Jennings 9th all Ferrari 458 mounted, with Chris Dockerill's 430 Scuderia 8th after an early clash with Dan Stringfellow saw him drop right down and fight back. Stringfellow's BMW was 10th and GTB class victor.

Race three would prove to be the most dramatic of them all though. From a tidy, controlled start, Derek Johnston opened a big lead until an exuberant exit from Redgate saw him spin, rejoining in 5th. What followed next was, according to Johnston later, him "driving his heart out" to catch up. His seemingly impossible overtakes and late braking, particularly into Redgate, were sensational as he pursued a hard charging winner, Martin Short. With seven minutes remaining, the gap to Short was 10secs, with two laps to go it was 3secs and closed just a little more by the flag. Stratford upon Avon Motoring Festival. By Simon and Janet Wright. The May Day holiday weekend saw lovely weather draw out the crowds to the World famous tourist destination Stratford upon Avon, in Warwickshire. The town is very popular with tourists, especailly on Bank holiday weekends, and the town centre did get gridlocked s few times during the day. This caused a few problems for the Sporting bears who were giving rides in different sport cars for charity, and the cars got stuck in traffic as they returned to the town centre. The organisers had very cleverly split the display in to different groups scattered around the town centre and had placed a few street maps to show where different car displays were being held, but a few direction arrows pointing towards the next nearest display might have been helpful. "To Be or Not To Be" - No an MG B and an MG F The heart of Stratford, outside the birthplace of William Shakespeare, had a good line up of classic and modern cars. Outside his former home were a line up of classic sports cars including a range of MG © Janet Wright sports cars, a Triumph Stag and a pair of classic MG TD sports cars plus a Jaguar SS 100 convertible. These classic British sports cars were getting many admiring glances from the crowds of Bank Holiday tourists, including many overseas visitors. © Simon Wright Further British classics included a Ford Lotus Cortina, An Austin Hereford, an early Jensen and a 1980s Aston Martin V8 Vantage. Parked outside the Black and White house were two of Britains most iconic classic sports cars, the Jaguar EType and the Aston Martin DB6. To finish off the road of British greats was a vintage "A dish fit for the Gods" a Ferrari 330 GT series 1 "whether 'tis Nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows… Rolls Royce, a luxury Bentley for a Noble M12 sports car

This group included a fantastic 1964 Ferrari 330GT Series 1 along with a classic Austin Mini and a Triumph TR5 sports car along with a selection of new Aston Martin sports cars. Walking across the park to the Royal Shakespeare Company theatre saw a group of supercars lined up outside the main entrance. Pride of place was one of the latest Jaguar F Type sports cars sitting next to its predecessor the classic EType. The Š Janet Wright new sports car was getting a lot of attention as this was a couple of days before the offical launch. Classic cars included a Jaguar 2.4 Mk II, an Aston Martin DB2, an early Land Rover and a 1913 Morris Oxford 9HP Bullnose on display from the Heritage Motor Centre at Gaydon along with a 1963 Morris Mini Cooper S Rally car. There was an impressive line up of modern supercars towards the river. These included a McLaren MP4 12C, a Ford Mustang GTO V8, Porsche 911, Nobel, Audi R10 and Aston Martin. Moving back up through the town uncovered another little clutch of cars parked in a small shopping square. Hidden amongst the cars here was one of the gems of the show, a very rare and unique 1971 Triumph Stag Fastback, the only one remaining of three built. Also in this square was a Cox GTM rally car. The final location visited was the market square at the top of the town. With two out of two race victories at Oulton Park's Easter British GT season opener, Trackspeed came to Rockingham with high expectations and went on to make it three out of three. by Simon & Janet Wright. The seventh Worcester Motor Festival was held in the streets around the city centre on Saturday the 18th May 2013. It was a lovely sunny day which helped bring out the crowds. The cars were spread around the entire city centre, which made enough space to view the cars individually, whilst keeping each group within sight of the next, though the event was very well signposted with arrows indicating which way to go to the next group of cars. The show was opened by the Mayor, who then went on a walk about around the vehicles talking to as many people as possible. Worcester may not have as much motoring heritage as some of the other major Midland cities such as Birmingham and Coventry, but it does have two significant factors in its favour. Shelsley Walsh, the oldest motor sport venue in the World is only a few miles away from the city, and probably the last British motor manufacturer Morgan is only a few miles away at Malvern.
