Editorial The largest Classic Motor Show in the UK will be at the NEC, near Birmingham between the 15th and 17th of November. The first show in May 1984 occupied just one hall, while this years show will cover a mammoth 82,000 square metres in ten halls plus an additional hall for the Classic Motorcycle Show. Frank Lyons switches to a McRae GM1. The HSCC Finals held at Silverstone saw Frank Lyons race a McRae Chevrolet GM1 in the Derek Bell Trophy Race. This was the ex Roy Lane hill climb car which was sold to America years ago and is now back in the UK. The McRae was based on the McLaren M19 Grand Prix car after Graham McRae tried to buy an M19 in 1971. He was unsuccessful but did obtain a copy of the plans which Len Terry used to produce the first chassis at Leda, the LT27. It was slightly larger than the M19 as it was required to carry more fuel and built connect to a 5 litre Chevrolet engine. It was re-named as the McRae GM1 in 1972. A total of fourteen were built between 1972 and 1973. The original McRae proved to be a very successful design with Graham McRae winning the US Formula 5000 Championship and the Tasman Championship in 1972 and the Tasman Championship again in 1973. Roy Lane achieved considerable success in the British Hill Climb Championship, taking the title in the McRae Chevrolet GM1 in both 1975 and 1976. Frank was a little less successful, retiring from the race after only 2 laps. © Simon Wright

BARC give up Mallory park. After extensive discussions with the Administrators, the British Automobile Racing Club (BARC) has announced that it is "unable to pursue any further involvement with Mallory Park". It is understood that the landlord, Titan Properties is not prepared to reduce the rent to half its current amount but is prepared to offer terms for the next 12 months but without any commitment towards necessary capital expenditure on track work. The BARC was committed to continuing operating Motor Sport at Mallory Park but is not in a position to do so with the continuing uncertainty in respect to contractual agreements with Titan Properties and Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council. Under these circumstances, the BARC has come to the conclusion that it is unable to pursue any future involvement with the Mallory Park circuit. At this point, all track activity at Mallory Park has ceased operation. Š Janet Wright
The World record attempt by the 70 year old Vintage Adventurer Rob Wade and his co-driver Michael Flanders to drive their 1930 Ford Model A from Staten Island to Venice Beach in California in just 60 hours has sadly failed on its first attempt. They left New York on Columbus Day (Monday 14th of October) to travel through ten states in an attempt to drive 2,947 miles non-stop in under 60 hours. HISTORIC RACING CLUB/NZ FORMULA 5000 ASSOCIATION 2013/14 MSC New Zealand F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series Season Preview Rnd 1 The Sound MG Classic meeting, Manfeild Sat-Sun Nov 9-10 2013
SMITH SET TO MARK ANOTHER MILESTONE AT MANFEILD New Zealand motor racing's evergreen 'super-veteran,' Ken Smith, will mark another milestone at the opening round of this seasons' MSC New Zealand F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series at Manfeild this weekend. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the opening of the 3.0km Feilding circuit and Smith will be the only competitor at The Sound MG Classic meeting who has competed there every year since 1973. "I didn't do the very first meeting they had there, but I did the big one that summer and I've been going back ever since," said the 72-year-old about to embark on his 56th consecutive national motor racing season. Three-time former MSC NZ F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series champion (and Smith rates the Feilding circuit as one of his favourites, despite a serious accident at the start of the first MSC F5000 race the last time (2 years ago) the series visited the circuit. now five-time Lady Wigram Trophy winner) Ken Smith (Lola T332) © Fast Company/Alex Mitchell "It's like a second home to me," he said. "The original promoters, Rob and Wendy Lester, were always very good with the drivers plus its good for the spectators because they can see all of the track rather than just one little bit of it, from the grandstands." Smith, a three-time former MSC series champion who drives a Lola T332 similar to the one he raced here and in Australia in the 1970s, heads a 13-strong Tasman Cup Revival Series entry at this weekend's two-day The Sound MG Classic classic and historic motor racing meeting at Manfeild. An unfortunate date clash with the inaugural Highlands 101 endurance race at the new Highlands Motorsport Park in Central Otago means that both defending MSC series champion Steve Ross (McRae GM1) and 2012/13 series race winner Clark Proctor (March 73A) will not be on the grid at Manfeild this weekend (the pair are sharing a Mosler sportscar at the Highlands event) though Smith will not exactly be lacking for competition. Series young gun Andrew Higgins (Lola T400) has impressed at the two rounds of the Formula 5000 Australia Cup series already held, and former MSC series champion Ian Clements from Christchurch (Lola T332) is more than capable of taking the battle to the Auckland pair. Also entered this weekend are 2011/12 series runner-up Aaron Burson and his father Peter (both McRae GM1), former Lady Wigram Trophy winner Roger Williams (Lola T332) and Talon MR1 driver David Banks (all from Auckland), 2011/12 series third placeman Brett Willis (Lola T330) from Rotorua, series returnees Sefton Gibb from the Hawke's Bay and Tony Richards from Christchurch (both Lola T332), as well as longtime classic and historic event supporter Russell Greer (Lola T332) from Blenheim, local driver Tim Rush (McLaren M22) and Class A (for older cars) standout Alan Dunkley. Dunkley is a real crowd-pleaser in the only high-wing car (a 1968 Lola T140) in the MSC field and Smith, for one, rates him highly."They're certainly aren't many people who can push one of those old cars round like he can. He always gives 110%," says Smith. British GT Final Donington Park 5th-6th October 2013. By Simon & Janet Wright. The British GT Championship reached its climax at a sunny Donington Park at the beginning of October. Both GT3 and GT4 titles were still up for grabs as the teams arrived at the East Midlands circuit with a full grid of 32 cars for the 2 hour championship finale. Before this race, the championship could not be closer with Andrew Howard (Beechdean Aston Martin Vantage GT3) just 1/2 a point ahead of the Ecurie Ecosse BMW Z4 GT3 pair of Marco Attard and Oliver Bryant. The other drivers still in with a chance of the title were Michael Caine and Ahmad Al Harthy in the Oman Air Motorbase Porsche 997 GT3 R and Nick Tandy in the Trackspeed Porsche 997 GT3 R. The GT4 title was also still open with Ryan Ratcliffe and Rick Parfitt Jnr leading for Optimum Motorsport in the Ginetta G50 with Delan Jones 2nd Race winners Patterson/Bell United Autosports Audi R8 LMS Ultra

None of the championship contenders took Pole position round the sweeps of the full Donington GP circuit. This honour fell to Joe Osborne in the 888 Optimum Racing BMW Z4 which he shared with Lee Mowle, who would start the race. The other front row spot was the Gregor Fiskin/Richard Westbrook Trackspeed Porsche 997 GT3 R, with the first championship contenders in 3rd place on the grid, the Ecurie Ecosse BMW Z4 of Attard/Bryant. to drop out of contention was Al Harthy who spun the Porsche in the Melbourne loop hairpin and had to watch the entire field pass him. ‘Vintage’ Classic Car Boot Sale, Southbank Centre, London – October 12th 2013. By Pete Austin. ‘Vintage’ presented their first Classic Car Boot Sale in the shadow of the London Eye on London’s Southbank on Saturday October 12 th. Traders sold everything from vintage clothing, collectibles and memorabilia to vinyl records from their classic vehicles. The collection of cars was certainly eclectic with 50’s American ‘gas guzzlers’ and Vintage Model A Fords alongside British icons such as the Aston Martin DB4, Sunbeam Tiger and Rolls Royce. © Pete Austin

Even the refreshments were served from appropriate vehicles with a London double decker bus acting as a bar and the food court on the upper level comprising the best ever collection of classic street food vans. Scooters and bubble cars added to the mix and, in addition to many of the traders being in period dress, the impromptu jazz and swing performances of Elle and the Pocket Belles added to a tremendous atmosphere.

HSCC Season Finals at Silverstone 19th October 2013. By Simon and Janet Wright. © Simon Wright
Andrew Hibberd and Sam Wilson were never further apart than this in the Formula Junior race where they finished 1st and 2nd
The end of another sucessful season drew to a close for the Historic Sports Car Club (HSCC) at Silverstone on Saturday the 19th October when they held their Championship Finals Historic race meeting. Using the National circuit, the nine race programme was to decide many of this years championships. First out on the damp track was the Classic Formula 3 championship which had already been won by Graham Fennymore in a Ralt RT3. But it was Greg Caton in a March 803B who took the first race win of the © Janet Wright day by just over 6 seconds from Fennymore in his Ralt RT3 with Ben Mitchell third in his March 743. Richard A-Willes Reynard SF79 and Gareth Walters Mallock Mk 11B both won their classes. Next up was the Historic Road Sports and this title had already been settled © Janet Wright in favour of John Shaw driving a Porsche 911. Having dropped one race score already and with only 9 points available for the win, he was already 14 points clear at the top of the Class winning Gareth Walters Mallock Mk 11B leads Mark Hulme Toj-Modus championship. The M1 in the Classic Formula 3 race race was won by Roger Waite in his Lotus Elan S1 by just 0.228 of a second from class winner Bruce Stapleton at the wheel of a Morgan Plus 8. Peter Shaw had been the early leader and was 3rd in another Lotus Elan S1. Class winners included Waite and Stapleton, plus Chris Keen

Andrew Hibberd won the Formula Junior race even though not in the hunt for the championship. His Lotus 22 led from the start but he could not shake off Sam Wilson in another Lotus 20/22 and they swopped the lead as they battled for victory. Hibberd took the win with Wilson second just 0.099 of a second behind at the flag. Simon Diffey had also joined the leading group to make it a Lotus 1-2-3 all covered by less than 1 second after 15 laps. Denis Welch was a long way back in 4th place but continued the Lotus trend in another Lotus 22.
Class winners included 5th place Christopher Drake driving an Elva 300, Will Micham the the U2 Mk2 in 11th, Robert Barrie 13th in his Lotus 18, 24th placed Jan Biekens in a Stanguellini FJ, Graham Barron Gemini Mk11 in 26th, Rudolf Ernst in the PBA Mk11 27th and Peter Williams in Battles all through the field in the Histroic FF race. Brian 29th overall at the wheel of a Morris Lola T202 leads Mike Wrigley Elden Mk8 Kevin Brabham BT6. Stanzl Merlyn Mk20 and Louis Hanjoul Elden Mk8/10 The single seater action continued to come thick and fast when the large field of Historic Formula Fords took to the track. Callum Grant dominated the race in his Merlyn Mk20a taking victory from championship leader Sam Mitchell in another Merlyn Mk20 who closed to within 0.146 seconds of the lead at the end, while Josh West made it a Merlyn Mk20a 1-2-3. There was plenty of wheel to wheel racing through the field and several drivers got caught out at Brooklands, spinning off the track. Local driver Michael O'Brien from Towcester won the Novice class win for drivers with no previous race or kart experience. The Formula Ford theme carried over to the ByBox Historic Touring Car Championship with the front of the race dominated by a three car Ford Lotus Cortina battle for the lead. Mark Jones, Tim Davies and Neil Brown had the cars sideways through luffield as they battled for the lead of the November 2013 Classic and Competition car

race. Behind them the small cars were having their own race with the Singer Chamois of Andy Jones and the Mini of Tim Harber locked in combat. Nigel Cox had a huge spin coming out of Brooklands in his Ford Lotus Cortina, but the rest of the field managed to avoid him and he was able to continue for a while but eventually retired near the end of the race. The three way battle at the front was eventually broken when Brown had a huge moment coming out of Brooklands, getting his Cortina completely sideways across the track as he spun away his position. This allowed Roger Cope through in to third place in his BMW 1800 while Brown recovered to finish 4th. They were nose to tail until the 9th lap when as they started to lap back markers Jones began to pull out an advantage as they passed the slower cars. Nicholas Ball had qualified 11th in his Chevron B14 and had dropped back to 15th on the first lap. He then began a charge through the field passing car after car, getting 11th by lap 2, 7th by lap 3, and as the leading cars began mixing it with the lapped backmarkers, he continued his charge towards the front and reached 3rd place by lap 13. As the race entered its final phase, Jones continued to pull out his lead, winning by 37.070 seconds, while Ball took 2nd place on lap 16 and Ross finished in 3rd place nearly 5 seconds behind Ball at the flag. Tim Kary in a Brabham BT28 finished 5th overall to win class D for 1 litre Formula 3 cars built and raced between 1964 and 1970. The Formula Ford 1967 Classic Racing Cars Lotus battle for the lead between Antony Ross and winner Ian Jones to 1971 Invitation class was won by Jonathan Baines in a Merlyn Mk20, while Lincoln Small in a Brabham BT10 won the 1 litre Formula 2 cars up to 1966 clas and final class winner was Page 26 November 2013 Classic and Competition car

Tizzard also won his class, with Max Bartwell in 5th in his Elva Mk7S taking a class win along with Mark Williams in 6th driving an AC Cobra. Michael Hibberd took another class win in his Lotus 23B in 7th while the Marcos 1800GT of Andrew Smith also won his class in 12th place. The remaining classes © Janet Wright were won by Denis Welch 15th in an Austin Healey 3000, Gisella Ketvel Ford GT40 in 17th, Graham Pattle led home a string of MG B in 22nd, Andy Somerville was 29th in his Triumph TR4 and final class winner was Chris Glaister in his special Cannon GT that finished 32nd. The Derek Bell Trophy race for single seater racing cars, is not a championship, but a series of races during the season for Formula 5000, Formula 2 and the occasional Formula 1 car. Regular competitiors, the Lyons family were out in force as normal, with Frank driving a Formula 5000 McRae GM1 instead of his normal Gurney Eagle while Judy was driving her Formula 5000 Lola T332 and Michael was in his regular Lola T400. On the short National circuit, Michael had lapped his mother Judy by the end of lap 2 by which time Frank had retired the McRae. The nice suprise was a Triumph Gloria convertible and an early Morgan 4 plus 4 convertible sportscar. Due to major roadworks at Bewdley, the roads were gridlocked, so the best way to see the car Morris 8 displays was to ride the steam trains that are operated all day along the line. At the Hampton Loade Station there was a display of classic motorcycles, 1954 Riley RM 1.5 while the Highly station display was based around Austin cars from Longbridge, both pre and post war. Spa Classic 6 Hour Endurance Race 21st September 2013. By Mick Herring To win the feature Spa Classic 6 Hour endurance race at all, every bit of your luck has to be aligned. Repeating the following year means that the gods, probably Greek in this case, were indeed with you. After an intense 6 hours around Spa's 7.004 km circuit the Ford GT40 of Leo Voyazides and Simon Hadfield took their second consecutive victory by 35 seconds ahead of the one hundred cars that took the 4 o'clock start. The sight and roar of a GT40 leaving La Source is always captivating to me but the spectacle of two equally matched GT40 chasing each other lap after lap out of La Source was mesmeric. The calibre of cars can never be underestimated, with Ford GT40s taking seven of the first nine places in the dry race. But it was the driver credentials that made the entry list serious reading. © Mick Herring

FIA Masters Historic Formula One Spa 21-22 September 2013. By Mick Herring. The fact that Michael Lyons took his customary brace of victories in the Masters F1 races over the Spa weekend belied the drama, especially that of the first race on Saturday afternoon. The young Ferrari GT driver extended his getaway from the 28 car field at the rate of 5 seconds per lap until the Cosworth DFV engine of familiar blue Hesketh 308E refused to rev beyond 8,000 rpm. Classic Car meeting at the Swan at Fradley. Sunday 27th October 2013. By Simon & Janet Wright. It was a bright and breezy day with a few showers, and a time to do a little exploring to find a different classic car gathering. Fradley is located a few miles away from Lichfield in the Midlands, and is home to the Curborough Sprint course. This meeting was just up the road from Curborough, on the car park of the Swan Public House, which was located right next to the junction of the Trent and Mersey canal and the Coventry canal. To access the venue by road, meant driving along a single track towpath road with built in speed humps and several passing places. It was a relatively small gathering of classic and modern cars, where enthusiastic owners can chat amongst themselves about their pride and joy. The most unusual vehicle on show was a 6 wheel Puch Pinzgauer All Terrain vehicle. of horse. In 2000 the rights were sold to Automotive Technik Ltd and the vehicles were manufactured in Guildford, Surrey. They © Simon Wright were either 4 or 6 wheel drive to allow for all terrain capabilty. The first car to catch the eye was a blue 1948 Singer 9 Roadster. This was a very nice example of the car that was built between 1939 and 1949. This particular model was a post war model from 1948. engine, as used in the Bantam range but slightly modified to produce 36 HP from a downdraught SU Carburettor. The vehicles performance was handicapped by the 3 speed gearbox which meant that top speed was around 65 mph (105km/h). The post war models had a stiffer chassis than the pre war models and the engine was mounted further forwards. The aluminium panel bodywork was attached to the wooden framework, with rigid axles front and rear and non-independant leaf spring suspension. An immaculate red and cream 1954 Sunbeam Talbot 90 Mk IIA was lined up at the front of the car park. The car had been extensively restored and resprayed to its current colour scheme. Powered by a 2267cc engine and a four speed gearbox, complete with column change, the car produced 77bhp and large brakes with pierced wheels to improve brake cooling. Over 10,000 were produced between 1952 and 1954. © Janet Wright Another duotone car was a purple and white 1939 Wolseley 14/60 1954 Sunbeam Talbot 90 MkIIA series III powered by an 1822cc in line 6 cylinder engine which produced 55 bhp and gave a top speed of 71 mph. 63rd Anniversary Birkett 6 Hour Relay 26th October 2013. By Simon & Janet Wright.
The 750 Motor Club held its annual end of season team relay at Silverstone, using the historic Grand Prix circuit on Saturday 26th October. This unique event is the fun end to the club racing season for many competitiors who get the chance to race around Silverstone for longer than most other club races. The event was the brainchild of one of the founder members of the 750 Motor Club, Holland "Holly" Birkett in 1951. After his death, the event was renamed in his honour. This year saw the 62nd running of the 6 hour relay, the 50th anniversary event was a 12 hour Š Janet Wright race. This unique event sees up to 70 teams competing with between 4 and 6 drivers and cars, using the full historic Grand Prix circuit (cuts out the sharp entry to Club corner from Vale). There are two events running within the one race. The main aim is to complete as many laps as possible during the six hours. Each team can only have one car on track at a time, so when one comes in to the pits, the next team car is released out on to the circuit. The second event is a handicap classification, where each team, apart from the scratch team, are given a number of credit laps before the race begins This year the scratch team was The Free Radicals with no credited laps, while the most credited laps were the Smarts 4 You Racing team with 38 laps credited before the start of the race. The Handicap result is then calculated from the actual number of laps that the team cover plus their handicap laps. Entry is restricted to Saloons and Sports Cars, allowing First lap in to Stowe with the Third Radicals Aaron Bailey Radical SR3 in an early lead
