Editorial. At this time of year, there is not much motorsport taking place in the UK. The occasional Trial, Driving test and Rally for the fans sturdy enough to face the cold weather all day, but for most enthusiasts there are still the car meets, often taking place at local pubs, where you can pop out for an hour or so, see some fantastic cars and chat with fellow enthusiasts, before heading back to the warm in doors. The one major event to look forward to in January is the annual Autosport Racing Car Show at the NEC near Š Janet Wright Birmingham. Hall after hall of Mallory Park saved. racing and rally cars, drivers, The Leicestershire circuit has new operators. Real Motorsport Limited has been formed by Stuart celebrities and the live action hall Hicken and Eddie Roberts, both well known in the motorcycle racing world, to run the circuit on a to keep us going before the day to day basis. Eddie, a former motorbike racer who in a 20 year career competed in the TT and season starts again in earnest. Grand Prix racing, owns Complog, a retail operation selling motorcycle tyres and supplies tyres to the British Superbike Championship. Stuart also has a bike racing background, competing in the late 1960s before managing racing teams before setting up his own Hawk Racing squad. Stuart's career also included several years at Mallory Park. After the previous Mallory Park operators went into administration after problems with contravening agreed noise regulations, the new company has taken advice from Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council regarding noise issues and the local community. They will now begin work to get the circuit into shape ready for racing in the Spring. Unfortunately it is unlikely that any car championship races will take place at Mallory in 2014 as championship calendars and venues were already in place before news of the circuit being saved was announced. Hopefully some non championship race meetings will take place at Mallory during this year. Prix. When Toyota decided to tackle Formula 1, they needed a development driver for 2001 and Alan was the obvious choice as he had driven for them at Le Mans. He impressed the team and was given the race seat for 2002 alongside Mika Salo. The new team was not as competitive as they had hoped and Alan failed to score a single point during the season and both drivers were replaced at the end of the year. In 2003 Alan was test driver for the Renault Grand Prix team and did some TV work for ITV. In 2004 he returned to sports car racing, driving for Audi and won the Sebring 12 Hours race at the wheel of an Audi R8, driving with Frank Biela and Pierre Kaffer. This was the start of a long and successful career with Audi, where he also drove in the DTM in 2005 at the wheel of an Audi A4 DTM. He also won the World Endurance Championship with Kristensen and Duval in 2013 after winning the Silverstone 6 Š Simon Wright hours, the Le Mans 24 Hours, and the 6 Hours of Circuit of the Americas in Austin Texas. Webber tests Porsche LMP1. After getting permission from Red Bull, Mark Webber was able to test the new Porsche LMP1 with its high performance hybrid drive at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve near Portimao in Portugal before Christmas. He officially joins the team on the 1st January 2014 to join former Le Mans winners Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas, and Neel Jani. Porsche will field two LMP1 prototype race cars in the sports car World Endurance Championship (WEC) which starts in April at Silverstone, with the Le Mans 24 hours race being the high-light of the season. The regulations stipulate that manufacturers run hybrid vehicles in the top class for Le Mans Prototypes (LMP1), so Porsche is using a 4 cylinder petrol engine with direct injection and two energy recuperation systems. The recovered energy is stored in a battery until used by the driver. A powerful electric motor then provides additional drive to the front axle. However, the WEC rules limit the amount of fuel as well as the electrical energy available to the driver each lap. Porsche is convinced that the development of such highly efficient drive systems will have a positive influence on the development of production sports cars

Delta Wing to sue Nissan. Delta Wing has filed a lawsuit against former designer Ben Bowlby and its former engine supplier Nissan against the new Nissan ZEOD project. Bowlby was chief designer on the Delta Wing project and is now working on the ZEOD project which has unveiled a radical race car design, which appears to be very similar to the Delta Wing. Don Panoz claims that those involved in the ZEOD project have used confidential information that the designer had from his Delta Wing designs. The ZEOD has been given the nod as the Garage 56 eligible car for the 2014 Daytona 24 Hours race, a program for new designs and concepts to take part in the race in a nonpoints paying manner. Part of Bowlby's contract with both Chip Ganassi Racing, who is the owner of the Delta Wing LLC, was that any designs he created for the racing team and its subsidiaries would remain with the team under its intellectual copyrights, even after his departure.

Lamborghini Huracan LP 610-4 The successor to the iconic Lamborghini Gallardo, which sold over 14,000 cars and has been the most successful Lamborghini ever, is the new Huracan which uses innovative technology to give absolute performance. As with all Lamborghini models, the name is derived from the name of a fighting Bull Huracan of the Spanish Conte de la Patilla breed. He was known for his outstanding courage and strong sense of attack. New technology is used throughout the design with full LED headlights as well as full LED use or all night illumination. The interior is dominated by a 12.3 inch full colour TFT instrument panel which delivers all car information to the driver, including navigation maps and infotainment functions. The rest of the interior is finished in Nappa leather. The chassis is a hybrid arrangement of carbon fibre and aluminium elements. This gives the car an overall weight of just 1,422 kg dry. The new 5.2 litre V10 engine develops 610 bhp to give a top speed of 325 km/h or over 200 mph with acceleration of just 2.3 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h. It uses the new IDS direct and indirect fuel injection system which are smartly combined to give more power with lower fuel consumption. Also thanks to the stop & start technology the combined fuel consumption figure is 12.5 litres per 100 kms. The power is transmitted through a seven speed dual clutch transmission and a fully electronic four wheel drive system. There are three different driving modes Strada, Sport and Corsa which vary from traction oriented on the road to extreme performance on the race track, all selectable from a switch on the steering wheel. Stopping power is provided by carbonceramic brakes to give improved performance. Š Simon Wright

Audi unveil new Audi R18 e-tron quattro with laser lights at Ingolstadt. The new LMP1 sports car which will contest the Le Mans 24 Hours and the FIA World endurance championship has another new innovation for 2014. The car will operate with Laser light for the first time. By using this new lighting technology, Audi is setting another milestone at Le mans, which will eventually filter down to the Audi production models on the road. The innovative laser light complements the main LED headlights of the new Audi R18 e-tron quattro. A blue laser beam backlights a yellow phosphorus crystal lens through which the light beam is then emitted. This new light source provides even more homogenous lighting of the road. Audi declined to reveal any other technical innovations at this time in the face of stiff competition in 2014 from Porsche as well as Toyota. Audi will run two of the cars in the FIA World Endurance championship but for Le Mans, the team will race three cars. The driver line up will be announced at a later date. January 2014

H&H Christmas Gala - Chateau Impney Speed Celebration. Wednesday 4th December 2013. By Simon & Janet Wright with additional photos by Pete Austin. Situated near Droitwich in Worcestershire, right next to the M5 junction 5, Chateau Impney is a grand hotel built in classic French chateau style in 1875 and set in 110 acres of picturesque parkland. Back in the late 1950s and early 1960s, the venue was also host to the Chateau Impney Speed Trials, many of which were organised by the Hagley & District Light Car Club. These events saw many famous cars and drivers compete up the 550 yard course along the twisty drive and in the grounds of the hotel. The first event in 1957 was won by David Good driving an ERA R1B in a time of 24.64 seconds. There are now plans to run a hill climb revival event at the Austin Healey and MG TF parked outside the H&H Christmas Gala venue in 2015 with a new course, twice the length of the original course, and a free speed celebration event was held on 4th December 2013 to recall the glory days of Chateau Impney as a competition venue. Classic and Sports Car magazine in conjunction with H&H Classic Auctions and the Chateau Impney hotel © Pete Austin organised an exhibition of historic vehicles which had competed at the venue in the past. H&H also held an auction the same day to help generate interest in the event. One of the cars in the auction was a Smith F2 single seater racing car, which was also known as the Mason Master Special, that had competed twice at Chateau Impney during the 10 years of the Speed Trials. This rare car was one of only two built by Gerald G Smith and was ordered new in 1957 by Jack Perkins who christened it the Mason Master Special, after the Mason Master Drill which he had invented. The car competed at Chateau Impney in both 1959 and 1960. The sister car was driven by Alan Stacey in period, and he managed a 2nd place finish at Brands Hatch against Coopers and Lotus 12s. The Smith F2 was a Smith F2 Single seater sold for £37,855 in the H&H Auction

forward thinking design using a Coventry Climax FWB engine, rear mounted sequential gearbox, alfin brake drums all round, inboard on the rear, and an all alloy body. The car sold in the auction for £37,855. The exhibition hall featured a dozen or so cars that had competed at Chateau Impney in the past. The ERA C-Type R8C was one of three C Types converted from the original B Types built in the 1930s. Of the original 20 cars built by ERA, 18 still survive today along with 2 facsimiles built later. Various ERA cars competed at Chateau Impney, including Bill Moss in R5B in 1957, Tommy Norton in R4D in 1958 and 59, Alan Cottam in R1B in 1959 and Jim Berry on several occasions in an ERA Special. This ERA was owned by Earl Howe and was converted from B-Type to C-Type in 1938. The BRM P48 was © Pete Austin driven in the 1963 Chateau Impney Sprint on the 29th ERA R8C 1938 September 1963 by Tony Griffith, who defeated Hill Climb Champions David Good and Tony Marsh to win the event outright. He entered again the following year to break the long standing course record of Reg Phillips with the new record Best Time of Day (BTD) of 22.07 seconds which is still © Janet Wright the current sprint course record. The BRM P48 model was built by the Owen Racing Organisation between 1959 and 1960, during which BRM P48 - 1960 time 7 were built and 4 still survive. This particular car was raced by Jo Bonnier in the 1960 Formula 1 championship, by Graham Hill in the 1961 Inter Continental Series and later by Tony Marsh in the British Hill Climb Championship, breaking course records at Prescott, Shelsley Walsh and Wiscombe Park in 1963. designs. This car was manufactured on the 10th November 1950 and was bought by Lewis Johnson Tracey of Solihull who actively raced the car in all types of events. The car took part in the first International RAC Rally in 1951 and the 5th in 1955, the International Rallye Soleil Cannes in 1952 and 1955 and the MCC National Rally in 1956. It was part of the team that finished 2nd in the 750 Motor Club Six Hour Relay in 1952 and at the 1953 Sunbac Race Meeting it managed a 5th, 4th and 1st position finish. Tracey won the over 2700cc Sports Car Class at Chateau Impney in 1957 with a time of 29.21 seconds. © Simon Wright The Caesar Special appeared at Chateau Impney between 1957 and 1960 driven by Doc Taylor. He competed in the Racing Cars Formula Libre over 2 cylinder class. This unique car is still competing today at VSCC Hill climb meetings driven by its current driver Paul Martin. The Fairley Climax Special was originally a Cooper 500 which was developed in to a Hill climb special by Reg Phillips over a 7 year period. It has a methanol fuelled, Supercharged Climax engine bolted in to a light weight single seater body, making it a highly competitive package in British Hill climbing in the early 1960s. Reg Phillips ran the car for the first time at Chateau Impney in 1957 and finished 3rd in the Racing Cars Formula Libre over 2 cylinder class Caesar Special behind Tony Marsh and Jim Berry. In 1961 he set a new outright course record at Chateau Impney in a time of 22.08 seconds, which was only beaten in 1964 by Tony Griffith's Formula 1 BRM P48 by 1/100th of a second. The car is currently undergoing a © Pete Austin thorough overhaul. The Bugatti T51 is one of the most iconic pre-war racing cars ever built. Frank Wall competed in a T51 at the 1958 Chateau Impney event in the Sports Racing Car Class over 2000cc. This was one of the three works cars in 1933 and was raced by Achille Varzi in the 1933 Monaco Grand Prix and it was the first car to claim pole position for the race based on Practice © Pete Austin times rather than ballot. Other competition cars on display in the exhibition hall included the ex Phil Scragg HMWBBC Local news team were interested in the HMW-Jaguar Lotus 15 - Dizzy Addicott Jaguar, a Morgan three wheeler, a Frazer Nash and a Lotus 15 Buick and a Lotus Elite. As well as the competition car exhibition and the Auction, owners had been encouraged to arrive in Classic and Vintage cars and a separate car park outside the Regent Centre was available for their cars to be displayed. Quite a number of interesting vehicles arrived for display including an immaculate 1925 Wolseley AC8. Slightly more modern were a pair of Austin A40 saloons built just © Janet Wright © Simon Wright up the road at Longbridge and a Standard Vanguard Estate from Coventry. There were also cars built further afield, including a beautiful Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona in yellow. H & H Auction at Chateau Impney. Held in the Regent centre, the auction contained an interesting selection of classic cars including a single seater racing car which had competed at the Chateau Impney Speed events in the past. The 1957 Smith Formula 2 car was sold for © Pete Austin £37,855. Some of the more unusual cars such as a 1939 Hotchkiss Monte Carlo 680 Decouvrable saloon and a 1970 Ford GT40 MkIII Evocation failed to sell. Sports cars seemed popular 1974 Triumph Stag £2,938 with a wide variety of prices. A 1937 MG VA Tourer fetched £28,560 while a later 1948 HTG 1500 sold for £43,680 and a 1959 MG A 1600 Coupe sold for £15,960. At the other end of the © Janet Wright scale, a 1974 1939 Hotchkiss Monte Carlo 680 Decouvrable - Not Sold Triumph Stag in yellow sold for just £2,938 but a 1967 Triumph Spitfire MkII reached £15,680 while a superb 1961 Daimler Dart SP250 sold for £22,035 and a fantastic white 1956 Jaguar XK140 Fixed Head Coupe sold for £44,800. A 1951 Aston Martin DB2 failed to sell, but a 1937 Aston Martin 2 litre 15/98 Four Seater Tourer sold for a huge £89,600. There were several cars parked outside that were in the sale, but had definitely seen better days. One of the tattiest cars on display was an unusual 1956 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud by James Young, one of only 24 built with the James Young body. The all alloy body and personalised interiors commanded a fifty percent premium over the standard factory produced cars. This car originally appeared at the 1955 Earls Court Motor Show with a two tone titanium grey paint job with off white leather

upholstery. This car once belonged to pop © Simon Wright star Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics who had it painted with a flowering rose motif. After Dave Stewart relocated to Los Angeles, the car has stood idle in a field under a tarpaulin for many years, and it showed. Although the alloy bodywork remains generally corrosion free, the paintwork has lifted in many areas, especially the roof. No attempt had been made to start the engine. Even in this very sorry looking state, the car sold for £11,480. Another barn find, a 1975 Alfa Romeo 2000 GTV sold for £9,184 but a 1977 Daimler 1956 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud by James Young £11,480 Sovereign 4.2 which is in need of restoration sold for just £825. A 1989 Jaguar XJS 4.0 Lister, the only 4.0 Lister ever built, and in need of bodywork restoration, failed to sell. The highest price on the day, went for a recently restored 1939 Lagonda V12 Drophead Coupe which sold for £201,600. Around 200 of this model were originally produced, less than 100 are thought to have survived to the present day.

VSCC Winter Driving Tests 2013. By Pete Austin

© Pete Austin

St. George’s Barracks near Bicester was once again the venue for the VSCC Winter Driving Tests held on Saturday, December 7th. This is the final event of the season and the last chance for competitors to accrue points towards the many of the club’s aggregate trophies. 54 drivers took part over 12 tests during the day on a dry and mainly sunny day. In addition to displaying driving skills on manoeuvring their vintage vehicles around the obstacles and through rough ground a good memory is also required as some of the tests were quite lengthy and complex in their nature. A regular at this event, Edmund Burgess brought his Bugatti © Pete Austin

all the way from Suffolk, now looking immaculate again after its inversion at Prescott earlier in the year. An interesting car was the 1914 Marlborough driven by Harry Fraser, the restoration of which featured in the November issue of ‘The Automobile’ magazine.

Dougal Cawley was his customary exuberant self in his GN Ford Piglet despite a lack of reverse due to a mechanical problem and regular VSCC photographer Mark Ballard found himself at the other end of a camera lens in his well driven Frazer Nash Falcon TT Replica. Italian exotica was represented by the Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 ably driven by Alex Pilkington and flying the flag for Brooklands was museum director Allan Winn in his Bentley 3 Litre Tourer. The entry was as ever very varied with everything from Austin 7’s to Frazer Nash/BMW sports cars. January 2014

Classic Car of the Month By Simon Wright. 1911 White G-A Touring Car. Built in America by the White Company of Cleveland, Ohio. The company was formerly a manufacturer of sewing machines originally from Boston Massachusetts that was formed in 1858. In 1866 they moved to Cleveland and in 1898 Thomas H White purchased a Locomobile steam car. He found the boiler to be unreliable, so his son Rollin set out to improve the design. He came up with a form of water tube steam generation consisting of a series of stacked coils. His unique feature was that the coils were all joined at the top to allow water to only flow when pumped which controlled the steam generation. He also pulled the steam from the lowest coil, nearest the fire which allowed for control of the steam temperature. this was critical as the White Steamer operated with superheated steam to take advantage of the steams properties at higher temperatures. He patented this design. By 1900 they had built their first 50 steam cars. They switched to building petrol driven vehicles, slowly phasing Š Simon Wright out the Steam cars by 1911, when around 10,000 had been built, more than the better Š Janet Wright known Stanley. The first petrol model was shown at the 1908 Motor Show in England in December. They built petrol powered cars until 1918, using the Delahaye designed engine under license, after which they switched to manufacturing trucks. They continued building commercial vehicles for 69 years until they were taken over by Volvo in 1987, creating the White GMC brand. Eventually, the White name was dropped completely.

The White GA was powered by a Delahaye designed monoblock L-head 4 cylinder 3.7 litre engine producing 30 brake horse power, fitted with a four speed gearbox, with 4th gear acting as overdrive. It has a leather cone clutch. The engine is a total loss system where the sump holds very little oil and the engine is drip fed oil from tubes fitted on the bulk head inside the car. Solid front axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs and a live © Simon Wright rear axle with threequarter elliptic leaf springs on the rear, with two wheel mechanical drum brakes. Wheelbase is 110 inches. The side lights are lit by paraffin and the head lights were originally acetylene. The car was capable of between 35 to © Simon Wright

40 miles per hour, flat out. The right hand drive model version was only built in 1910 and is very rare today.

Archive Photo of the month. By Pete Austin.

This year sees the reappearance of turbocharged cars in Formula 1 although power outputs will be nothing like those experienced in the previous turbo era between 1977 and 1988. To illustrate this period I have selected a shot of Riccardo Patrese in his Brabham BT50 BMWat Brands Hatch in 1982.

Midlands Breakfast Club, Cosford Air Museum 15th December 2013 By Simon Wright. A great turn out for this popular venue saw the Breakfast club return to Cosford just before Christmas. The club meeting is open for people who have a passion for cars, whether its sports, performance, retro or classic and this variety showed in the entry. Various car clubs parked together, but these open meetings also allow the individual owners to turn up and show their pride and joy to fellow enthusiasts. There were various types of vehicles on display. There were quite a few rally replica cars on show, including 4 Vauxhall VXR line up by the Dornier exhibit Audi and 2 Lancia models, several Ferrari and Porsche high performance sports cars and several classics such as a Triumph GT6, a TVR Tasmin 420SE and an original Lotus Elan. There were also the unusual, including a Jaguar pick up truck and a pristine Peugeot 304 convertible plus a Lola T70 MkII Spyder replica road car. In the high performance modern car selection there were loads of © Simon Wright
