Kait & Mike Kait moved to the San Francisco Bay Area for work and landed in an intentional community, where she and sometimes up to 15 housemates lived. Although Mike was warned by other housemates “not to scare off the new girl,” their first conversation was a night long debate on various operating systems for specific use case scenarios. (There was at least agreement on an anti-windows front). They became close friends, often found huddled in deep conversation, earning the nickname “the twins”. From friendship bloomed love and a few years later, on a hike up to Berry Falls, Mike proposed. Initially, they planned to have a small wedding in the mountains, but realizing a 2- 3-hour hike would exclude most guests, they decided to marry in Kait’s home town near Atlanta. Still wanting to do something uniquely them, they decided to blend their love of science, history and story-telling into a steampunk themed wedding. Finding just the right vendors for such a theme was essential. On the way to Bake Rattle and Roll (who miraculously found a covalently-bonded atom cake topper), Kait was about to give up and ask a farmer to rent one of their fields, when they serendipitously passed 9 Oaks farms and booked the venue. The next challenge was finding someone who would collaborate on a wedding dress to fit the theme. Someone recommended April Abernathy, and the 2 deconstructed a “base layer wedding dress” and reconstructed it with ornamental details and antiques. 11 19803.4.2.010.011.RealWeddingKaitAndMikeAB.indd 2

TIPS FROM A PROFESSIONAL
Personalizing Your Wedding Business Partner: Mary Ellen Baker, Georgia Grace Weddings What makes your love story special? If you are unsure, start with how you fell in love. Where did you meet? Do you have similar interests in traveling, sports, food, and/or movies? All these unique facts make up your love story and should be incorporated into your wedding. Let’s start with the day before your wedding. A welcome bag is the perfect beginning to your guests’ experience. Include items such as your favorite snacks, a list of your favorite local restaurants, and even a map of the area with special locations marked such as where you got engaged or had your first date. How about decor? Go beyond just using your favorite colors or flowers. When guests arrive, have either a personalized wedding sign or program. Think about incorporating some fun facts about yourselves on the program, and/or include a general timeline of the reception. This way guests know what to look forward to throughout the evening. Table numbers and escort cards are another great way to add an untraditional and fun twist. At each table, put a picture of yourselves or name the tables after special places you’ve been. One of our couples named each table after a different hole at the Masters. Another named each table a different spot in Athens. Use golf tees set up on fake grass, personalized Cokes, planted succulents, magnolia leaves, or even small pieces of driftwood as the escort cards. Remember, you and your fiance aren’t the only VIP members at your wedding, so incorporate your family. At the cake table, put pictures of both sides of your parents cutting their own wedding cake. Serve your grandmother’s famous cookies with dessert. Make sure the DJ plays the polka to show appreciation to your Polish heritage. And let’s not forget our fur babies...make them the star of cocktail hour by naming your speciality drinks after them. Food is a perfect way to show guests they are attending YOUR wedding. Have a pizza station, incorporate a make your own taco bar, or have a late night tater tot station. What if you aren’t a cake fan? No problem...serve pies, doughnuts, crepes, or have a candy bar. If you love it, there is a way to have it at your wedding. Finally, have your guests depart with a favor that screams you and your fiance. For one wedding, the couple gave away coffee beans from Costa Rica where they first met. Another couple, did his & hers treats by giving away small bottles of whiskey in honor of him and jelly preserves in honor of her. Our goal as wedding planners is for the guests to walk away remembering they attended YOUR incredible wedding. Personalizing your wedding should be fun and special. Let your wedding location & the time of the year guide some of your choices. Your guests are there because they love you, so make sure you show them what makes your love story worth celebrating! Sarah & Jordan Jordan was 13 and Sarah was 12 when they met at the ice rink. Jordan fell in love with Sarah immediately and told all his friends that he loved her. Sarah found out and thought he was completely weird so she tried to keep her distance and would hide when Jordan came over. Years later when she was 16, Sarah started to take an interest in Jordan when they started to talk. Soon, they were always together. A week before her 18th birthday Jordan asked Sarah’s parents if he could ask her to be his girlfriend. Jordan surprised Sarah with a poster saying “ will you be my girlfriend”. They often talked about getting married and Sarah picked out the ring she hoped to wear. On Valentine’s Day, Sarah went to her sister’s basketball game and then after thought she was going to a restaurant. Instead, they went to The Cotton Mill and there was Jordan on one knee with the most beautiful ring in his hand and on the brick wall were rose gold balloons spelling out “will you marry me” and of course she said YES!! Sarah and Jordan were thrilled and excited to start this new adventure together but then COVID happened. Wedding plans changed a couple times and the couple made many of the props for the wedding. They did not have any bridesmaids or groomsmen but did have their best friends help them throughout the whole process. Their wedding day was very intimate, they just requested their pastor sing a song and have that time of worship and prayer. It was such a special day with the people who were the most important people in their lives who truly made a huge impact throughout their lives. After the wedding, the couple went to their favorite restaurant for an intimate dinner. Trending... Healthy Food Trends
Heal ier Food Choices
by Andree Kosak, Trumps Catering There really does seem to be a shift in the way that people are eating. Health seems to have become a concern when it comes to menu and food choices. Brides working with caterers are faced with menu adjustments for guests with dietary restrictions. Gluten-free, lactose intolerant, vegetarian, pescatarian, and even vegan are just a few of the requests looked at when finalizing menus. By the way, pescatarians don’t eat meat, but do eat fish – I did have to look it up. This "trend" doesn't seem to be going anywhere so I did a little bit of research online and found some pretty interesting facts about healthy trends in food. I recently read a fascinating article about a California dairy farmer that is converting his land to almond groves so he can produce almond milk instead of cow’s milk. What? Why? Consumers are switching over to plant based milks to avoid dairy allergies, growth hormones, antibiotics and animal fat. Fact … since 1970 Americans consume 37% less dairy and in the past year alone, consumption of lowfat milk plummeted 13%. I also learned and not surprised to hear that fast food sales are down nationally. It appears that people are trying to use or learn kitchen skills. Haven’t you noticed the 1 minute quick videos for food preparation on Facebook? Those fascinate me. If only you could create a
19803.4.2.020.HealthyFoodTrends.indd 1
meal in 1 minute … right? The other trend is the assembled boxes delivered to you with cooking instructions, like Blue Apron or Purple Carrot which are just a couple of the companies that are growing like crazy. Tom Brady has even put his name behind the Purple Carrot. Then there are hundreds YouTube instructional videos on how to prepare fresh food at home. And finally there are dozens of smart phone apps such as Yummly or All Recipes with hundreds if not thousands of recipes. Of course, as a Caterer, I cook, so I’m happy to have so many resources. Another new trend, people are trying to cut down on the amount of meat they are consuming. I’m sure you’ve heard of meatless Mondays? There are even now meatless meats available in the grocery store found in the health food section where you will find meatless ground beef crumbles to put in your pasta, hamburgers made with black beans and breaded chicken cutlets made with soy products … all designed to taste like meat.
vocabulary such as sustainability, GMO’s, environmentally conscious, animal friendly, health-conscious, micro brand, plant-based – I could go on and on.
What does this mean for me as a caterer? Well I think people still like their mac & cheese but they’re just as likely to order a Mediterranean salad station with fresh baked focaccia breads and fresh marinated vegetables and actually be interested in where our ingredients come from than ever before in the past. They’re ordering hand squeezed lemonade and forgoing soft drinks and they are asking for local artisan beers and coffees. Yes there’s a shift … a trend … I kind of like it. Makes my job rather interesting.
People are not eating less; they are choosing the brands that mirror their needs and values. Reading and understanding food labeling is a new skill and people are paying more attention to what they’re putting into theirbodies. New food

Amelia & Matthew
Laughter and tears set the mood for their cool autumn wedding. After all, Amelia and Matthew had channeled Zach Galifianakis during their engagement session, so the wedding had to be quite a ride. During her father’s remarks at the reception, he teared up as memories flooded in and family and friends marveled at how far these two had come. Transformed from a mere wedding to a celebration of life, family members donned their Billy Bob teeth (a family tradition) as the couple turned around from their “I do’s” and guests held life-size childhood cardboard photos of the couple to their faces as Amelia and Matt took the dance floor for the first time. Surprises and joy overflowed underneath the tent as the evening came to a close. The biggest joy of all came as Amelia and Matt walked into the night, hand-in-hand, heading into the rest of their lives full speed ahead. 23 19803.4.2.022.023.RealWeddingMergandollarAB.indd 2

Tips From a Professional
Wedding Wellness Business Partner: Alicia Hilaire of Spa Li Cia Wellness Before, During, and After the Wedding Tips to create a sense of peace and wellbeing for brides. Wellness Before the Wedding The wedding bliss is just around the corner and there is so much to do to prepare for the special day: dress fittings, site visits, rehearsal dinners, hair and makeup run-throughs, etc. With all the plans and everything falling together don’t forget to make time for yourself; schedule a spa day for you and your bridesmaids! Your body and your girls will thank you. Benefits of spa therapy include relaxation, stress reduction, and relief from muscle tension. Planning a spa day not only shows your appreciation, but it also provides a great opportunity to bond with your bridesmaids. Your time spent together and relaxing will add special memories that last a lifetime. Wellness During the Wedding The big day has arrived, and emotions are high as all the fine details are coming to life. To uplift your spirit and put your mind at ease, studies show that meditation and positive thinking can significantly increase psychological and physical well-being. Meditation increases patience and tolerance and reduces stress. Whether you meditate with your bridesmaids or alone, enhance the experience with aromatherapy before you walk down the aisle. Essential oils such as eucalyptus, rosemary, and lavender have therapeutic properties that evoke peace and wellness. During your spa day, be sure to pick up a small bottle of your favorite essential oil. Awaken your senses and invigorate your mind on your special day! Wellness After the Wedding You survived one of the most beautiful and precious days of your life, things have settled down, and married life has begun. Living well as a married couple starts with selfcare. Maintain your sense of wellbeing by incorporating regular massage therapy into your life. “Date nights” could include a one-hour couple’s massage or regular massage therapy. The benefits of regular massage or couple’s massage include spending quality time together and bonding as a couple. Sign up for a monthly membership at your favorite local spa. You and your spouse will appreciate your initiative to add regular massage to your health routine. Spa Li Cia See Our Ad On Page 29

Savannah & Chris Chris and Savannah met during her junior year of high school. Whenever Chris messaged Savannah to go on a date, Savannah knew instantly that her parents would not approve since he is five years older than her, so she brushed it off. Fast forward to Savannah’s freshman year at Piedmont College... Savannah and Chris reconnected on social media and it felt like they had known each other for years. Chris went on a family vacation with Savannah’s family and after a long day of fishing in the Apalachicola bay, they went for some dinner at St. George Island. Little did Savannah know that Chris had a very special event planned. After dinner, Chris took Savannah and her family toSt. George Island lighthouse to meet some family friends (also on vacation there). As evening was approaching, Chris went closer to the lighthouse and was requesting a picture with Savannah since it was her first time at St. George Island. As they were taking photos, Chris knelt down and proposed to Savannah... with tears flowing down her face she said “Yes”. As that vacation drew to an end, it was time to start planning a wedding! Savannah and Chris discussed the details that they both wanted for the wedding on April 4, 2020. However, God had better plans for that date. The Coronavirus pandemic began and the couple because they knew that they would have to postpone their beautiful wedding. After many tears were shed and hard decisions were made, June 6, 2020 was determined to be the new date. Planning a wedding is stressful, but planning a wedding during a pandemic is much more stressful. Their new wedding day came faster than they would have ever imagined. All of their close family and friends came to celebrate the matrimony of them becoming one.Yes they were very anxious, but at the same time they were getting married! Without God, their family, their friends, or each other they wouldn’t have been able to have the wedding of our dreams. At the end of the day, the husband and wife will still become one and it will be more perfect than anyone could imagine.

Samantha and Garrett As most fairytales go, the meet-cute (first encounter) was rather unexpected. With assistance from their dogs, Samantha and Garrett met outside their apartment complex where both were living during college. With Garrett from Canton, Georgia, and Sam from Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, it was destiny their paths would cross. They dated for three years and as their relationship grew, they realized that God’s purpose for their lives included marriage. In October as Sam’s grandfather officiated the union, they, along with friends and family, began their forever journey together. Surrounded by beautiful fall colors and underneath the porch of the farmhouse, the couple and guests shared a meal together. As the full harvest moon loomed overhead, the evening ended with a wood fire and roasting marshmallows. Such an inspirational couple, Sam and Garrett put God in the center of their home, relationship and hearts. “The more we cling to Him, the stronger we are,” says Sam. “We appreciate each other deeply.” Obvious to all who are lucky enough to know these two, their love is palpable and inspirational. Their dreams for the future include a farm and family in the North Georgia mountains.

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. We all know the age-old saying about bridal traditions. But, your something old doesn’t have to look old! Upcycling is a great way to incorporate something old and something new into your wedding.

Jessica and Joe
Jessica and Joe are high school sweethearts and first and only loves. They were introduced by mutual friends in high school that ended up as the DJ in their wedding!. In December Joe proposed to Jessica down by the river behind her parents house, where they first told each other they loved each other. They found the tree that they had carved their initials into back when they were teenagers. The day of their wedding, the weather was rainy and windy. That did not prevent Jessica from wanting to take outdoor pictures. She was only going to wear the dress one time and wanted to have beautiful pictures to remember her special day. Because the wedding was in the winter and the ceremony was right around sunset time, photos had to be taken before the ceremony. They shared a sweet first look and read private vows to each other. During the ceremony, they did a beautiful blessing of the rings where they passed the wedding rings amongst the families and friends. Jessica’s grandmother made her wedding cake, making it extra special and sweet. All in all it was a truly incredible day for this sweet couple. 45 19803.4.2.044.045.RealWeddingGAGraceAB.indd 2

Intimate Weddings
Small intimate gatherings are what’s trending now. If you had your heart set on getting married this year, adjust don’t cancel. Here are a few ways to get married now. Virtual weddings: Allow your family and friends to attend your intimate ceremony by having a videographer capture it all. Live stream it so that even those who can’t travel can feel a part of the action. Bonus, you can have the video of your nuptials forever. Beautiful locations: Intimate might mean you have more options in venues. Contact your dream venue about smaller gatherings. Make it your own and make it beautiful. Save for an epic vow renewal: If having a large party is important to you, you can have an intimate ceremony now and an epic vow renewal for when larger gatherings are allowed again. An intimate wedding allows you to truly make it your own and allow your creativity to shine. We’d love to see your intimate celebrations this year. Send us your pictures and story for a chance to be featured on our website and social media.
