If you ask me the latter half of the year doesn’t get enough credit. When the heat lends way to football season, falling leaves, and Halloween. Colors of the season become darker more jeweled tones. There’s tailgating, pumpkin patches, and apple cider. Road trips to see the foliage and pumpkin flavored everything. Lots of beautiful seasonal things to add to the perfect Southern wedding. It might just be the

for warm drinks and cuddling up with your favorite person. The colors are still rich but icy accents come out to play. Winter wonderland weddings can be so beautiful. After more than 30 years of being involved in the wedding reception industry, I have watched the most popular wedding month change from June to October. Yes, October is now the most popular wedding month in this area. As you would expect me to … I did some research online, mostly out of curiosity, to find out why June was the most popular month and why it is no longer. The tradition of "June Brides" dates back to Roman times and the June 1st festival celebrating the marriage of deity Juno and his wife Jupiter, the Goddess of Marriage and Childbirth. Romans favored the month of June for weddings because that was the month dedicated to the observance of June, the Roman goddess of marriage. June was considered the most ideal month for a bride to conceive a child. If she conceived in June that would mean she could still help with the harvest. A June conception would also mean she could deliver the baby and be back in shape just in time for the next harvest. Now that's romantic, right? In the 14th Century, June was the top pick because it's when people began to bathe again – yes that’s what I said - following winter, and brides wanted a pleasant smelling crowd. Add to that … flowers were newly available and very necessary to mask the smell of those who hadn't yet cleaned up after a long winter – oh my!
The Celtic calendar refers to the term 'honeymoon' as the first moon after the summer solstice (June 21). The term became synonymous with 'time following the wedding', even when it happened outside of June weddings. Today, for June brides there’s still a lot of great summer ideas and savings. For instance, flowers cost a bit less because they become more available with it being the big growing season. Kids are out of school and families can travel. The weather isn’t sweltering … yet. Here in Athens, Georgia, summer school is in session and the town isn’t as crowded so it’s easier to get hotel rooms, park and enjoy the fun nightlife.

Don’t get me wrong – you wouldn’t dream of having your reception on an actual game day and you check the SEC football schedule the day it’s published when you are deciding on your wedding date. But you sure do make it a part of the celebration. This was our most popular Groom’s Cake when we were making cakes for our brides (must give credit to our well missed, retired Susan Hodges). We must have made hundreds of Georgia G Cakes. I rest my case … until next time!
So, where did October come from? I don’t think it’s about bathing or harvest. The ‘Knot’ reported on a survey in 2014 that resulted in a noticeable shift with October coming up as the second most popular month to marry and in 2015 moved to the most popular month and remains. It certainly is when our calendar is the most booked with wedding events. The most popular weekend in October is the weekend with no University of Georgia football, in town or out of town. Part of it is the weather, October is not as hot, humid or wet, and the evenings are beginning to cool. But I have to say, around these parts … it’s got a lot to 13

BYOB Wedding Bar Service Featured Business Partner: In Good Spirits Your wedding bar can seem like one more task on an ever-growing list. But with a little consideration, you can plan a cost-effective BYOB bar and transform your event into an experience. Bring Your Own vs. By the Drink: Commonly, service providers price drink packages by the head. But, most venues give you the option to buy the alcohol yourself (BYOB), then hire a bar service to pour. Dispensing Libations: Allowing guests to serve themselves may sound simple and cost effective, but many venues require a bartender. Bartenders play an important role in helping to keep your guests safe. Confirm that the bartenders are state certified, and provide proof of general and liquor liability insurance, before sealing the deal. Set the Bar High: The experience is created by more than just the bartender; ask to see the venue’s serving area. Does it contribute to the experience? Is it big enough to accommodate your guests? Do you need more than one? Some bar services offer mobile bars for rent if the venue does not have exactly what you need. All about the Booze: The type of drinks chosen can have a major impact on budget. When shopping for wine, consider 1.5 liter bottles over the 750ml. If the bar is equipped, you can even purchase wine/beer by the keg. Instead of a full bar, consider signature cocktails. Custom drinks add a little fun for your guests and help to keep alcohol expense under control. To avoid having to pick up alcohol from the store, think about hiring a bar service who offers delivery. How much is too much? Calculating the number of drinks is key. As a rule of thumb, each guest will have 2 drinks during the first hour, and 1 drink each hour after. Don’t forget, with a BYOB bar, you take home the left-over alcohol, so over ordering is always better than under. Keep in mind that you will also need ice, cups, napkins, stirrers, garnishes, plus room for coolers, drink bins, and a variety of bar tools. These should all be outlined in the service providers’ proposal. And don’t forget to hydrate your guests! One of the biggest mistakes is a lack of non-alcoholic drinks. Discussing water service and nonalcoholic drink packages is crucial. With these planning tips, you can create an affordable, BYOB wedding bar for your guests to safely enjoy and remember. People say love at first sight doesn’t exist, but these two would disagree.
They met in FLA where Clay was stationed and less
than a year later Clay was sent to Alaska where he proposed to Lindsey. The bride and groom wanted a southern wedding in Athens where the groom’s family lived. The groom’s mother suggested 255 Milledge Hardeman- Sams house so the bride flew in from Alaska, the bride’s mother flew in from Germany and they found the perfect setting for their Winter Wonderland Wedding. Planning a wedding from across the world seemed difficult but with today’s technology it was easier than they thought. Kim Moss, owner of Hardeman-Sams House would FaceTime the bride in Alaska and the bride’s mother in Germany to cover every detail. The day of the wedding was magical and it looked like winter wonderland! Family and friends traveled from Germany, Netherlands, Ohio, Las Vegas, Colorado and Florida to attend their fairy tale wedding. Two teenagers met in college on the intramural field, became friends, but never dated. Eight years later they serendipitously ended up at the same Braves game, saw each other on social media and decided it was time to catch up. For their first date they went to a Festival in a nearby small town. Exactly one year later on the anniversary of the first date, they went to the festival again, where Jacob got down on one knee for the best surprise proposal ever a nearby cotton field. They decided not to do a first look, and the day turned out to be the most absolutely beautiful day ever without a cloud in the sky. Rebecca knew immediately Empire Mills was her dream venue. The couple wanted to be surrounded by good music, good friends, and good food at the wedding. They love to dance, so the dance floor was always full. Friends of the bride and groom provided the music for the day, from the ceremony and cocktail hour to the reception DJ - musicians included Atlanta Symphony cellist, music school friends from college, and present colleagues. The couple joked they would be happy getting married in PJs in the living room. Nine months earlier, Matthew took Elizabeth to Madison one evening in February, and Elizabeth still remembers those magical holiday lights twinkling as he proposed. Comfortable? • Set the tone for your wedding. If you want a formal wedding, make the invitation formal. Some of the trends for invitations include deckled edged paper, heavy cotton paper, silk ribbons, watercolor designs, custom designed monograms, envelope liners, belly bands and hand calligraphy. Simple elegance is the theme.
Word on the street is that vibrant color is going to be big in 2019!
Think jewel tones. The more color, the better. Shades of purple, emerald green, periwinkle blue - just to name a few. The trend is drifting away from the neutrals, only using them as backdrops to the color, and instead, showing your personality in color for your wedding. Also, trending for 2019 is the “Meghan Merkle” effect. Sleek, simple yet elegant gowns, cathedral veils, large bloom, colorful flowers, greenery and large palm leaves, even here in Georgia! Rose gold and blush pink will be replaced by copper, silver, bronze and chrome. Mixing them together gives a chic trendy new look. Simple is what it is all about. Venues are taking a turn as well. Outdoor weddings are becoming more sophisticated and church weddings always remain on trend.
Keeping those trends in mind, let’s talk wedding papers! The first thing I recommend is making a wedding inspiration board. There are a couple ways this can be done! A physical board that you can attach pictures, fabric swatches, and wedding invitations is the first way to do this. Start with Bridal magazines! Just grab a pair of scissors and start cutting. Pinterest is another great way to find inspiration! There are endless images to help you get an idea about how you want your own wedding to look. You can even find floral designers, stationers, caterers, and other vendors through using Pinterest. Once you have created your inspiration board, begin to narrow down what you really want at your wedding! Create a more detailed vision of what you would like. Save the Dates Around seven months away from your wedding, start thinking about save the dates. These should be sent four to six months before your wedding. Save the dates are very popular now with destination weddings and couples who are not from the same hometown. You can be fun with these and make it your own. There is no right or wrong when it comes to these. It is a great way to help people mark their calendars and making lodging arrangements to come to your special day! Wedding Invitations It is very helpful to get started shortly after getting engaged. We love to see any ideas she has about the way she wants her invitations to look. If a bride isn’t sure what she wants, we love helping create a custom look for our brides! Some things to think about are:

Wedding invitations should be in the mail no later than 4 weeks out from the wedding and no earlier than eight weeks before the wedding. We usually suggest sending them 6 weeks before the wedding. You can hand address, have a calligrapher hand address the envelopes or have the addresses printed for you. We can also stuff, stamp, and mail if your invites if you need one less task to worry about. Reply Sets This is helpful for you. It allows you to know who will be attending your wedding. It is most helpful in regards to the reception. From these, you know how many tables and seats are needed, how much food to serve, etc. Fifty to seventy percent of those invited with attend. If the reception is at a different location from the wedding, a reception card should be sent to give the address of where reception is located. Additionally, no information about where the bride and groom are registered should be included in the invitation set. Thank You Notes Although we live in a very digital world, a hand written thank you note is not overlooked and is still expected. Those you love took time to pick out a gift you would want, have it wrapped, and gave it to you because they care. Reciprocate how much you care by thanking them! There is so much more that could be said about wedding paper. The options are endless and we would love to help you make your wedding paper dreams become a reality. That is the most important commitment that you will make. Be more concerned with preparing for marriage than the event. Casey and Anna met through friends in her college town Carrollton, GA. Following dinner on their first date he mentioned his plan to build a house on his family’s land. He showed Anna where he wanted his home to be on the way home. One Saturday on their way to a double date, Casey and Anna walked up to a bridge on the running trails he was building for Anna on the family property. Casey proposed, saying there was nothing in life he wanted to go through without Anna and if they couldn’t get through it, he would build a bridge, so we could get over it. Anna wanted a big southern wedding and at Sanctuary Estate her dream came true!
