Energy Route _ Kapisillit 4th semester | Group work of 4 Done at the ‘Arkitektskolen Aarhus’ | Susan Carruth

The route between Nuuk and Kapisillit is a complicated one, more often it is made by boat to bring fuel and food to the village. The idea in creating the Energy Exchange Route is to transform the route by land into a touristic route which will not only bring visitors to Kapisillit but Energy. The Hikers (locals and tourists) start their Route in Nuuk and are given a Backpack, this Backpack will be charged in the huts along the way through renewable energy sources. Locals and tourists will learn about renewable energy along the way as well as about the greenlandic culture.

Unique Experience

The Exchange System:

Input: Help Energy Helping the locals

From travellers to Kapisillit: Tourists and locas, among them kids, travel the route and collect energy, which they bring to the settlement. There they help the locals with their daily doings. The energy and the helping hand are the keys to stay in kapisillit. From Kapisillit to the travellers: Tourists get and unique experience from hiking and experiencing the Greenlandic landscape. While collecting energy from renewable energy sources on the way, they learn about these technologies. In the same way the tourists learn about the greenlandic culture, by helping the locals.

Output: Knowledge Greenlandic culture Renewable energy

The local kids also get a great experience, they will learn about their cultural heritage and value the hard work and the landscape and nature.

The Fog Harvesting Machine _ 5th semester | Group work of 2 Done at the ‘Arkitektskolen Aarhus’ | Unit D

In the first phase we conducted the research on a weather phenomenon (fog), and in the secon phase the study of lightweight structures took place. Combining two weather phenomena and a structure, we had to decide on a time scale and a placement for our Investigation to take place in. The first end product was a more arch-like structure that was placed in a foggy place catching and magnifying the effects that fog and frost have on the structure. The transportable Pavilion has an homogenous outer look but a vivid inner life, the inner membranes are placed in different positions to allow more or less light to come in and more or less condesation to form.

03/22

TOP: Frozen membrane RIGHT: Visualization

THE OASIS

_

After the first testing’s, the idea to transform the membrane pavilion into a moisture catching machine was provided. Following this thinking path, the Pavilion was transformed and redesigned to collect fog, and be transformed into a landscape changing structure that could be placed in dry places in order to collect water from the condensation that occurs at night.

05/22

TOP: Diagrams BOTTOM: Test models

THE OASIS

_

After testing how water would collect under the structure and what kind of membrane positioning allows for more water to drip, we virtually redesigned the structure in order to create different watering levels inside it, the north facing side would be covered in water while the south facing side would allow people to enter as the water level would be lower. The water recollecting cycle would continue on for years until eventually vegetation would grow and the human induced Oasis would form.

Dwelling in Hydro Patterns _ 10th semester | Group work of 3 Done at the “École Spèciale d’Architecture” | Prof. D’Arienzo

One of the most important aspects when dealing with the site was to keep the industrial character while putting in uses that are going to benefit the neighborhood. We found the surrounding area to be very fragmented. In three phases we propose to regenerate the neighbourhood. Phase 1 : The regeneration of the boulevard, by unifying it through a continuous use of pavement patterns, to create a sense of direction and identity. In Phase 2 : we connect the nodes, that we identified as important for the community. Such as sports node, university node...And our water recycling node, which we developed. We connect them by using the patterns, which follow the old railway network. In Phase 3 we regenerate and focus on the nodes.Surrounding the site we find only few public green spaces, that is why we decided to revive the existing green natural space and turn it into a form of public urban forest.

Architectural and cultural Uncertainty _ 12th semester | Master Thesis | Solo work Chair for Spatial Arts and lighting design | Prof. Deubzer Chair for arch. history and curatorial studies | Prof. Lepik

My master thesis project is a theoretical, sociological study on conservation and urban regeneration. The goal in creatign this project was to contribute to a more democratic, fair, open and humane Architecture. An Architecture that is able to respond flexibly to the shifting cultural processes and that avoids obsolete urban structures. Uncertain architecture is conected to the cultural loss that can be found in my home island Tenerife, with more and more museums, libraries and cultural institutios closing as well as more and more buildings being abandoned. The project aims to create a participatory environment for the inhabitants to decide inside their community what they need and how they want to build it. In this case the role of the architect is restrained to the locator of the action points as well as the one who lays out the grid that enables thei nhabitants to construct their future.

Renzo Piano Building Workshop _ 6 month internship Fubon Tower Taipei | Joost Moolhuijzen

During this 6 months I joined team behind the Fubon Tower, the Fubon Art museum and the Energy center in Taipei, which was already at CD and DD stage, which means working on finishes and details as well has general permits. In these six months I was able to help the team with detail drawings of canopies as well as door details, the interior fur-nishing of the tower lobbys and bathrooms, section drawings, graphics work, 3D modelling for imagery as well as model making. All in all this was not a conventional internship, you are encouraged to take decissions, express them and be an active part oft he team. For me the most valuable experience was getting to know the talented professionals that make RPBW tha way it is.

Instant City Aarhus _ 5th semester | Group work of 6 Done at the “Arkitektskolen Aarhus | Unitd D

The main task in this workshop was to create an inflatable city out of plastic. The cooperation with the neighbours was of vital importance as we had already acknowledged in the previous experiment, where a scale model of the instant city in Ibiza was built. My teams structure could be added to any other and cooperate with it in forming a new building piece. The snail form allowed changes in the space sensation and dynamic, concluding in a more open space. In the end the whole mega structure with all the small components joint together was blown up to create the instant city Aarhus.

ReInvent the Museum _ 10th semester | Work in a group of 5 Chair for arch. history and curatorial studies | Prof. Lepik

After the semester Project named “ReInvent the museum where we had to think about the how the museum of the future would look like, we where asked to curate an exhibition showcasing the end results of the Semester in the Architecture Museum Augsburg. We planed and created a system to showcase the posters and models, as well as did research on the city and history of the museums in Augsburg. The Poster trees were fabricated our of steel and made so that they could be dismounted and used for other exhibitions.

This was an urban co-construction project. We took recycled materials from the adjacent markets and asked the inhabitants of the uarea to help us implement our idea. An urban sport spot. The euro paletts were reworked and other construction materials were used to create the bars and exercise elements. The inhabitants seemed happy with the result and still use it nowadays.
