Contextual Visual Analysis - Pigs

INTRODUCTION This photo collection booklet is a collection of pictures taken by people who own pig(s), to be use as an insight in how these people experience pig-human interaction/relationship. In order to analyze these interaction/relationships I request five people to answer to six statements by only using photos plus a brief explanation or description.

The statement format and type for this analysis were written in a way that the pig owner could photograph their pig from their perspective and in specific contexts – open statements. For this analysis my goal was to understand pig owner’ motivations, how they see their pigs, some parts of their daily routines and realize what kind of emotions are involved in each statement.

As a research tool I used online social networks like Facebook – to search for pig owners around the globe through pig owner group pages and to communicate and load photos through Facebook’ chat.

ANALYSIS: The pigs from this photo collection are grouped in three categories according to their size or place where they live. The first category is named small farm pigs – these pigs stay most of the time outside, are used to be in large places and share this space with other farm and non-farm animals (chickens, sheep, dogs) and they don’t stay in small sizes.

Grouped in a second category are the piglets or small domestic pigs – they spend most of the tome inside the house but also spend some time outside in gardens. In the third category – pet pigs – I put medium/big size pigs that live whether in or outside.

The five owner share common aspects: they all were followers and members of a lot of pig Facebook pages and three of them had a Facebook page or an Instagram account for their pigs. As A matter of fact there is a lot of online social networks sharing information about pigs and now a days these kind of pet are really popular. You can people in your neighborhood that have a pig as a pet and you don’t even know!

ANALYSIS: All pigs liked to eat a lot and they had a diverse diet. In general they prefer fruits and vegetables but one of the pigs, Chewy, loved to eat spaghetti and cake. One of them, Jamon The Pig, is a vegan pig and the pigs from Celebrity Mini Pigs were feed with Purina Pig Feed.

Feeding a pig is also a kind of interaction – the owner feed the pig with the food on his hands, putting the food on a plate or using an object, like a small shovel.

Shovel - small plastic shovel used by Lindsey to feed the big farm pig Patatje.

Purina Pig Feed - as well as the pet dogs, pet pigs have packed food. Brands like Purina offer a variety of swine feeds and supplements.

ANALYSIS: All the pigs where playful pigs. The pig Olivia had a especial toy only for him call Kong but he also play outside running and observing the dogs. The pig Patatje used to play with the dog inside the home when he was smaller. This pig also had small ball to play with. The pig Cewy had a lot of toys but he prefer to play outside with mug.

In general they prefer to be outside in the grass or in parks exploring, digging holes and observing the surroundings.

ANALYSIS: These pig owner are definitely animal’s lovers and had more than one animal at home/farm. They spend a lot of time with their pet pig and treat them as they were dogs or even babies.

Some of them liked to hear music, some of them liked to sleep on the owner’s lap, others were funny pigs and good companions.

ANALYSIS: All pigs enjoy to be surrounded by people and the farm and non-farm animals. Olivia didn’t like to be in noisy environments or around very energetic people. Patatje hang out with farm animal such as dogs, chicken, sheep, goat, and their owner but she is scared of the horses. Chewy spend less time with farm animals – when she was smaller she used to be surrounded by Memma ’s cats.

In general all the pigs enjoyed to be surrounded by other animals, especially dogs.

ANALYSIS: First of all some owners didn’t answer to this question because they said that there was nothing that they didn’t like about having a pig. Three of the pig owners answer with the same kind of dislike: these pet pigs like to dig in, mess around and explore. Patatje’s owner answer that she would like them to stay small, but the best ones don’t stay that small, they grown. Other aspect refer by one of the owners was the fact that they make a lot of noise when are hungry and in some really early mornings they start demanding food by making a lot of noise.
