Your support of the Clay Center does more than bring in interesting exhibits, amazing artworks and world-class performances. It goes beyond four-hour field trips and one-night-only concerts. It inspires. It empowers. It transforms. 2014 was a year of transformation at the Clay Center. From turning the old Gizmo Factory to the new STEAMworks gallery, to improving the visitor experience and cutting energy costs by installing state-of-the-art LED lighting, the Center’s 10th year gave rise to many exciting changes.

But, the transformation reaches far beyond the Clay Center’s walls, encouraging dreams, challenging minds and changing communities throughout West Virginia.

ANNUAL REPORT 2013–2014

Dawson, a 7th grader at Madison Middle School in Boone County, has certainly made a transformation since he first came in contact with the Clay Center one year ago. After struggling with his work in elementary school and often finding himself in the principal’s office, Dawson’s mom, Tara, worried about how her son would handle middle school. “The transition from grade school to middle school is a big difference. I worried for two years about how he would adapt before he even got there,” she said. Through a chance encounter with a teacher at a local grocery store, Tara learned about the Clay Center’s “Explore and Soar” afterschool program at

A student at another local school took his own life last year, sending a ripple effect of grief throughout the tight-knit community. When Dawson learned that this student he’d never met had been bullied, he approached the Center’s “Explore and Soar” manager with an idea. “We were discussing some potential projects that the students might work on, and Dawson asked if they could make a Public Service Announcement about bullying,” Clay Center “Explore and Soar” manager Staci Leech-Cornell said. “Dawson went from a student who may have sometimes been viewed as a bully to someone who wanted nothing more than to stop it from happening.” Later this year, Dawson and his fellow “Explore and Soar” classmates will

She thought it could help Dawson with his homework, but she never dreamed how much of an impact it would have on her son. “The first day, he came home with a big smile on his face. From day one he loved it.” Throughout the school year, Dawson’s grades improved, his attitude about school changed and his behavior took a dramatic turn. He became more accepting of others, and the relationships he built with his classmates and mentors boosted his confidence. Then tragedy struck.

work together to produce a P.S.A. that will be shared with schools throughout Boone County. From the days before joining the program to discovering this new passion, Dawson is a picture of the transformative power of the Clay Center’s education programs. His mom may have summed it up best: “He’s a completely different kid. I’m thrilled with the way he’s changed, and I commend the afterschool program for helping that.”
