Designed for those looking to keep up-to-date on current trends in teaching or build on their vocational skills, these courses are perfect for current educators and those that love to learn.

Personal Success Program

The Personal Success Program (PSP) offers a variety of vocational courses to meet the needs of students 18 years and older with mild to moderate cognitive impairment. The program’s focus is on gaining vocational skills to acquire entry-level employment. Each class is led by a content expert who has experience teaching people with disabilities. A special education teacher is present in most classes to provide additional support. The curriculum is designed to be delivered at a level and pace appropriate to each student’s needs. All new students must be interviewed by the program coordinator to determine eligibility prior to enrolling in classes. For a new student interview, please call (847) 543-2990. READING FOR THE WORKPLACE 2

This is a continuation class for students who took Reading for the Workplace 1 in the fall semester. Unlock the keys to better reading and spelling to help you be more successful at work and in your daily life. This class will focus on “pil/grim” and “pump/kin” words, vowel teams, r-controlled vowels and homophones. You will learn by seeing, hearing and physically experiencing the concepts. The first part of the class will feature lessons based on the SLANT System for Structured Language Training. The last portion will consist of reading and spelling games and activities to practice the previously taught concepts. Method of Instruction: Multisensory structured literacy, discussion, interactive activities, computer-based activities. Maximum of 6 students per class. Prerequisite: Completion of Reading for the Workplace 1 or minimum 6th grade reading decoding level. All students must be assessed by the SLANT Phonics Survey and the Johns Basic Reading Inventory Word Lists before starting the class and at the end of the class.

This is a continuation class for students who have completed Reading for the Workplace 3. Unlock the keys to better reading and spelling to help you be more successful at work and in your daily life. This class will focus on suffixes, the doubling rule, igh, ph, ea (bread), ou (soup) and the -dge rule. More emphasis will be placed on comprehension. You will learn by seeing, hearing and physically experiencing the concepts. The first part of the class will feature lessons based on the SLANT System for Structured Language Training. The last portion will consist of reading, spelling and comprehension activities to practice the previously taught concepts.

ESSENTIAL COMPUTER WORK SKILLS

This course is designed to introduce students to the essential computer skills needed to successfully secure and keep a job in the contemporary workplace. In this hands-on class, students will learn basic workplace computer skills including how to manage e-mail with a Gmail account, create documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Students will manage files in Google Drive, create and manage a calendar and learn Internet safety and security.

NEW! CONFLICT RESOLUTION

If you have ever had trouble with friends, family or work situations because of your feelings or being misunderstood, this class will help. Using art, games, music and role plays, we will explore and learn to understand our feelings. We will also find new ways to respond to friends, coworkers and employers through positive social interactions and communication skills. This will be a great opportunity to work on the soft skills that employers are looking for and learn valuable tips for your personal relationships too.
