together we rise
Clear Lake shined as a destination in 2020, thanks to our abundant outdoor recreational opportunities and an encouraging and supportive community. We are poised for another year of growth as those who traveled closer to home last summer discovered their new favorite vacation spot, and because our local businesses continue to put public safety measures first and remain open and ready to serve their loyal customers. We are hopeful to host a summer full of music, events, and of course, fireworks. Our cover photo by Ron Miles, Jr. signifies our dedication to tradition as we find ways to host visitors and provide activities to bring families and friends together.

BEACH DAYS are the BEST DAYS By Rachel Wumkes
There is simply nothing better than a day at the beach. Your toes in the water, the blazing-hot sun beating down from a cloudless sky. Casting every care in the World away and living in the moment, enjoying everything the beauty of Clear Lake has to offer. To ensure the utmost perfection for your day of frolicking along the beaches of Clear Lake, we’ve compiled a list of items one “must have” from our local stores.
SNACKS You’re guaranteed to get hungry at some point, so be sure to pack an adequate number of goodies to satisfy those munchies throughout the day. Simply Nourished and K&B Emporium have fantastic grab ‘n go items. Randy’s Neighborhood Market, as well as Fareway and Louie’s also have an abundance of options.
FISHING GEAR Clear Lake is known for being one of the best fishing destinations in the Midwest. Stock up on fishing poles, accessories, and bait at Clear Lake Bait & Tackle, located along Highway 18. As a bonus, their staff is uberknowledgeable about where the best bite is happening! 2
SWIMSUITS/COVER-UPS
Alas, as there are no nude beaches in Clear Lake, all beachgoers must be properly covered. Check out Unique Boutique or The Funky Zebras for all your swimming attire needs.
EVERYTHING “BEACHY” No beach visit is complete without all the proper gear, and Larson’s Mercantile can hook you up. Floaties, sunscreen, sand toys, beach towels, sunscreen, water guns – they have all the things for beach day fun in downtown Clear Lake. Be sure to stop in and stock up!
THE NEED FOR SPEED There’s nothing quite like the feeling of whipping across the water on a wave runner! Stop into Clear Lake Boats and check out their various rentals to satisfy your need for speed on the water. Or give Jake a call at Lake Time Boat Club and let them take the hassle out of your boating weekend at the Lake.
LIFE IN THE SLOW LANE If you prefer a lazier, more relaxing day on the Lake, check out Movement Solutions! They have boats, kayaks, stand up paddle boards and more to ensure you have the most fun out on the water. Or, if you prefer solid ground, they carry campers to rent, bikes, and other various outdoor equipment!
QUENCH YOUR THIRST You are in luck, as Clear Lake is home to Iowa’s fastest growing craft beer brewery. Stop into the taphouse at Lake Time Brewery or grab a six-pack to go. The cool, refreshing taste of barley and hops is sure to make your taste buds dance. Don’t let the sweet days of summertime pass you by in a blur, be sure to take time and enjoy everything the beautiful beaches of Clear Lake have to offer. clearlakeiowa.com

While small businesses throughout the country have struggled since the onset of the global pandemic, it is the restaurant industry who seems to have taken the brunt of the hit. With the continual variation of rules and regulations, they have had to roll with the punches to keep their doors open. Many have added delivery options, as well as online ordering and the opportunity for contactless pickup. Through it all, the many restaurants of Clear Lake have powered through, adjusting to the guidelines set in place by the State of Iowa to ensure the safety of both their patrons and staff. They have done everything in their power to make your dining experience a pleasant one and look forward to serving their many seasonal visitors and guests to the Lake! The Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors voted to take over Color the Wind beginning in 2022 with help from Larry & Kay Day. In February 2020, Larry and Kay Day announced that it would be their final year organizing Clear Lake’s Color the Wind kite festival. Over its 19-year history, Color the Wind has grown into a spectacular event drawing crowds from across the country to enjoy kites of all shapes and sizes flying over Clear Lake. Larry & Kay Day started Color the Wind out of their own passion for kite flying and as a way to give back to the community. They have generously dedicated their time and talents to put on the event and keep it free and open to the public. “It’s been an opportunity for us to give back to this wonderful community, and it’s been good to us,” said founder Larry Day, “But it’s time for us to take a step back,” Day continued.
16
With the Day’s announcement to take a step back, the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce expressed interested in learning the ins and outs of continuing Color the Wind. However, the global pandemic prevented the transfer of information in a timeframe that would make a 2021 event possible. “Ideally, we’d love to present Color the Wind in February 2021, but we all know circumstances have been less than ideal this year,” stated Chamber President & CEO Stacy Doughan, “With the Day’s guidance, we are confident Color the Wind will return in its full glory in February 2022, and it is our honor to continue the Day’s legacy and this remarkable event.” Last fall, Larry Day met with the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce to discuss a path forward with the event. Ultimately, the board voted to take over Color the Wind beginning in February 2022 with guidance from Larry & Kay Day. Color the Wind is tentatively scheduled for February 19, 2022.
TIPS FOR ATTENDING • Be prepared for cold weather and dress accordingly. Yes, it’s winter. Yes, it’s cold. But if you’re properly bundled-up, the weather will not impede the fun. We recommend a well-insulated coat atop a layer or two of thinner clothing; snow pants or bibs; and warm socks and boots. • Consider ice grips for your shoes/boots. Walking on an icy, frozen lake can be challenging so you’ll be thankful for the additional traction. • Bring a sled or wagon for the kids. There’s a lot of ground to cover and a sled or wagon will make it easier to enjoy the day with little ones!

In the face of turmoil and destruction, most people would run the opposite direction. Their ‘flight’ response kicking into high gear as they evade any type of harm. For the past 150 years, however, numerous men within the Clear Lake Fire Department have done just the opposite. When the call comes in, there is no hesitation, only swift reactions to ensure they get there in time, doing everything in their power to put out the fire. Thus, on the 150th anniversary, let’s take a look back at how the department has evolved over the years. Organized out of necessity in 1871, after the incorporation of the town of Clear Lake, the CLFD came to fruition. On a cold January night, the Coates Brothers Furniture store burned to the ground, taking down a nearby building in the process. Had there been a team of firefighters, it may have been saved. Back then, men fought fires with a bucket brigade; standing in a line as they passed the bucket until the final firefighter tossed it into the fire. Coupled with long poles used to push in walls to contain the flames, it was their only line of defense in those days. In 1883, however, the fire department purchased a Button Hand Water Engine, one chain gear hose cart and 300 feet of hose. With the strategic placement of wells throughout town (as there was no running water at the time) firefighters would place the hose into the well, which would then be pumped by hand up through the box and out the remaining hose into the fire. clearlakeiowa.com
This was also the time of the first fire extinguishers. Unlike today, these were filled with only water. Firefighters would use a mixture of baking soda and acid to create the spray effect, pressurizing the unit. Once used, they would simply refill and mix a new soda acid combination for the next time it would be needed. In the 1920s, with the invention of the automobile, the hand-pumps evolved into fire engines. This technology cut the lag time for firefighters arriving to the scene exponentially, allowing for more of a chance to save structures from total destruction. In 1925, CLFD purchased its first Model T pumper, which was used to battle blazes for the next 50 years. Mounted to the side of this unit were multiple extinguishers using the soda-acid mixture. The department expanded services again in 1989 when 13 members became certified EMTs. As time has evolved, so have the services needed from the Clear Lake Fire Department. Equipment and technology have expanded. There are bigger houses, more complex buildings, and more people to service. In 1990, they added Hazardous Materials Operations, and included ice rescue to their list of public services. However, as the founding fathers drew up the by-laws of the department, they stated there would be no more than 30 men as members. That number has held true throughout the years, and even today.
hiring of paramedics and more EMTs. This expansion made it possible for the CLFD to provide 24-hour medical services and ambulance transport. The new team received training to provide backup in fighting fires, as did the fireman train to assist the medical crew. With this expansion, came the need for more room. At that time, they were sharing space within the police department facility, but plans were underway on the development of their new building. In 2010, construction began on the current fire station, a majestic structure along N. 8th Street in the heart of Clear Lake. While the technology and method for fighting fires has changed from the line of men on the bucket brigade to what it is today, the heart of the firemen has not changed over the years. Their innate duty to serve the community, making it a better place for generations to come, still rings true in each and every one of them. Members take pride in being part of the Clear Lake Fire Department, dedicating their time selflessly to the betterment of our area. Clear Lake is a unique place to be a firefighter, too. With the added feature of having water rescue, even in the winter months, the proximity to the interstate, abundance of farmland, the pipeline, and the sheer size of this “small town” each create their own added obstacles for fireman who serve and protect. Regardless, their dedication has stood firm for the past 150 years and will hopefully continue for years to come.
In 2006, the Fire Department grew drastically, once again, with the addition of 2 ambulances. This resulted in the 17

The Glory Days of Woodford Island
Photo Credit Tom Gustafson, Above Clear Lake
By Rachel Wumkes Special thanks to Jan Lovell for her guidance and assistance in providing personal family details for this story.
People often use the phrase “if walls could talk” when describing interesting events happening at a certain place. Regarding Woodford Island, it wouldn’t so much be the walls doing the talking, but the vegetation and the land itself. Resting near the Bayside region on the south side of Clear Lake, the 3-acre island is a natural sanctuary of lush trees and thick brush, making it the perfect home for wildlife. A massive rock reef lies just under the surface of the water, every fisherman’s dream as they strive to catch the big one. The Island was not always such a serene place of natural beauty. Back in its early days, it was just the opposite, actually. A hub of hustle and bustle, the island was ‘the place to be.’ In 1861, the grant of the island land was given by Abraham Lincoln to Mason City pioneer resident Flavius J. Turnure. Throughout the years, the land was sold and purchased a handful of times. In the late 1860’s, the Milwaukee railroad came through Mason City, triggering 20
Clear Lake to become a resort destination for fisherman and hunters around the country. One of the most fascinating features of this piece of land, is the construction of the Hotel. Built in 1870, the Island Home Hotel was hailed as a place of beauty and social excursions. Being one of the most unusual hotel settings in the state of Iowa, the hotel was two stories in height, built in a Maltese Cross style. Decorators came from Chicago to adorn the building with décor and art. Patrons arrived at the lavish location via a steamboat aptly named “Lady of the Isle.” When she met her fate and sank, she was replaced with the “Island Queen” built entirely of iron. At that time, it was only option for transportation to and from the island. Attending catered parties at the Hotel was a prestigious honor. I can only imagine the splendor and magnificence of these events, as the island was the focal point of grandeur for the Clear Lake elite. In fact, it has been said the late suppers and dances were held well into the wee hours of the morning. Along with the hotel, there was another building which
housed a bowling alley, ice cream parlor and billiard tables. A racetrack was made around the outside of the island where people could place bets on horse races. Fueled by a strong wind, the Island Home Hotel burned to the ground in 1875. A second, much smaller, hotel was erected in its place which also burned shortly after its opening. When the island was purchased by CR Woodford in 1897, a home built by a former owner was already there. They remodeled the home to better suit their family, making it a rustic summer cottage. The building, which held the bowling alley, had been renovated into an icehouse, boathouse, and an apartment by a previous owner. The house remained on the island, garnering years of summer adventures for their family, until it was moved across the frozen lake in the winter of 1953 to Camp Tanglefoot. Before her passing, CR Woodford’s daughter, Esther Woodford Ashland, documented her fondest memories of growing up on the island in the early 1900s. She recalls spending quality time with her aunts, who had their summers free as they were both schoolteachers, learning clearlakeiowa.com
to identify flowers, constellations, and learning how to fish. As both aunts were vivid bird watchers, Esther stated she wished she had “charged her memory” of those times as she learned to identify the birds, their songs, and their habits. On the weekends, however, the island turned into a busy place as family, friends, and many guests came to visit. “I was especially lucky to be able to spend time at the cottage on the Island as a child,” she stated. “And later, my husband and I lived there the first summer after we were married. It was a beautiful place at that time – trees, but also open grassy areas. Many people seemed to consider it theirs, as they came on foot or wading across from Bayside and in boats. Sometimes they would wander around the outside of the house, staring inside to see what we were doing. Excursion boats brought crowds of passengers to Bayside on the weekends and, when the water happened to be low, a steady stream of people would head for the Island where they would spend the day. We often smiled at the usual scene – a girl sitting on the ground with her back against a tree – a man lying on the ground with his head in her lap.” clearlakeiowa.com
In 1971, the island was gifted by the Ashland’s to the State of Iowa on the stipulation it be left in its natural state, and no causeway constructed to make it part of the mainland. They felt very strongly that the island should be used by the people of Iowa, thus, it can be accessed by boat and used for public picnics and fishing. They asked the Conservation Commission to maintain trails and open areas so generations could enjoy exploring there. They have, along with the help of descendants of the Woodford/Ashland families, maintained this wish. The Island is held for public use only and no commercial enterprise is permitted on it.
To this day, the Island remains a focal point of our incredible lake. Over the years, hundreds of Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts spent countless hours on the island, exploring and camping. So many people have such fond memories of their youth and spending time on the island. Riddled with such a rich history, I wish I could have seen it all those years ago. Back in the glory days of Woodford Island.

The music lives on
ATTRACTIONS
By Rachel Wumkes
The historic Surf Ballroom and Museum has been a destination of bustling activity for years. Musicians book the venue on their way across the Midwest. The rich history of the building is embedded into the narrative of Rock ‘n Roll but recognized across every genre in the industry. It is touted that at the Surf, the “Music Lives On.” It did not die in a plane crash that fateful night in February, because it continues to beat within the hearts of music lovers across the globe. And then, seemingly without warning, a pandemic swept across the nation, shuddering the doors to live music venues everywhere. Including the Surf.
a National Historic Landmark in January 2021. Inclusion on the National Register provides nationwide recognition of a property’s historical or architectural significance and denotes that it is worthy of preservation. A true honor for the Surf Ballroom and the entire community of Clear Lake. It was a much-needed bright spot after such a trying year. And so, until bands can make a comeback onto the live music scene, we recommend soaking up the history of the Surf Ballroom by taking the self-guided walking tour or visiting the crash site. There is plenty of memorabilia to see regarding the past as we wait with anticipation for the return of live music at the Surf Ballroom.
For the first time in history, the hope that we hold onto, keeping the music alive… faded. That feeling, however, only lasted for a fleeting moment in time. A slew of donors, legacy members and grants kept the Surf Ballroom afloat, showing that the music truly does live on. Most recently, the Surf Ballroom received the most honorable accolade, being named as
Cypress Room Previously known as the SurfSide 6 Lounge/Cafe, this area functioned as a gathering area for dancers to take a break between songs and enjoy refreshments. Today, the lounge functions primarily as museum space filled with music memorabilia, authentic artifacts and photos of the many famous artists who have performed here.
January 13, 2021 The US Department of the Interior designated the Surf Ballroom as a National Historic Landmark, recognizing the Surf’s enduring role in the history of American Music. The Surf Ballroom is Iowa’s 27th National Historic Landmark. The Surf was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011; and in 2009 was dedicated by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a historic rock and roll landmark as part of their ongoing Landmark Series. The Surf was inducted into the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, three years after undergoing a historic rehabilitation lead by the Dean Snyder family of Clear Lake.

Three Stars Plaza Located one block west of the Surf’s front entrance, this circular park plays off of the musical significance of the Surf Ballroom and honors the final performance of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson. The monument was built and dedicated in 2011 and features an art deco inspired central spindle, holding three 45 records in a position “ready to play”. At night, it is beautifully lit with bright blue neon lights around each of the records.
Green Room Marvel at the Surf’s famous Green Room where decades of performers have left their mark.

Booths The Surf is fashioned after a South Seas beach club, complete with cabana style awnings & murals depicting breaking ocean waves as a backdrop. Concert-goers still enjoy a view of the stage from original booths designed to accommodate parties of up to six people.

Clear Lake Kindness Project Rachel Wumkes In a world where you can be anything… be kind. It’s a simple concept, really. The cognizant effort to choose kindness over everything else. To deflect the negativity swirling around our lives and combat it with something positive. In the midst of the global pandemic, when schools closed their doors and families remained inside their homes for days on end, something wonderful emerged. A bright light, casting its glow across Clear Lake. They called it the Clear Lake Kindness Project. The purpose was to spread happiness around like confetti, sprinkling among the residents of our wonderful community to create a bit of cheer. As the concept began to catch on, it became a double dose of awesomeness as it also helped many of our local businesses drum up a bit of extra business during a difficult time. Donuts were delivered to strangers. Cookies were delivered to neighbors. Friends left craft beer on each other’s doorsteps. Gift cards were distributed for everything from restaurants to retail stores to movie theatre popcorn, and arrays of bright-colored flowers were delivered often. Each of these with a note, explaining that someone was thinking of them, and they were to then pass on the kindness to someone else.
Liz FeFevre Thank you to...??? We are definitely a house of Pizza lovers and can’t wait to use this gift certificate to Papa Everett’s! Love Clear Lake and can’t wait to pass it on! #clearlakekindnessproject Tyler & Emily LeFevre
As there is no such thing as a small act of kindness, these gestures created a ripple effect. Like a single drop of water, each act created a wave with no logical end. The kindness perpetuated throughout Clear Lake for months on end. Throughout 2020, our town motto was “Together we Rise.” The Clear Lake Kindness Project was the epitome of that saying. We pulled together, banding as a solid unit to lift our neighbors, friends, and even complete strangers for the greater good of humanity. Because in a world where you can be anything… choose to be kind.
Stacy Doughan In a world where you can be anything, be kind. #clearlakekindnessproject #grateful Brielle, Maxton, & Addison Doughan
