THANKS TO DAD Growing Up Hunting in Montana By Nick Dodge Hunting… A broad topic that is just a way of life to so many Montanans. Yet, it is also big business that brings millions of dollars into our state’s economy every year. Immediately, so many thoughts, stories, and adventures come to mind. I could probably write a series of novels about my favorite activity over the course of my 28 years in “The Last Best Place”. I had to do some deep thinking to decide which aspect of hunting means the most to me and that I wanted to share. Hopefully, many of our readers feel the same way.
I always refer back to a poem that I found while working on an English project my sophomore year of high school. “Thanks to Dad” is a great interpretation that sums up my roots as a hunter, and the reason I continue to pursue game today. I would like to give credit to the author. However, I could never find a name for the creator of my favorite poem to date. So, if you’re out there – thank you.

A perfect role model, maybe not. But he was the best one that I had. And some say he was rough on me, When I was just a kid. But I think it’s because of him, I turned out like I did. Without hunting as a teenager, I might have lost my way. It was the thing that bonded Dad and me, And still is to this day. It gave him time to talk with me, And teach me lots of things. Not just about hunting, But the changes each day brings. It also gave me time with him, And I’m thankful for that chance. Because I lost him way to soon, I could have missed that dance. And I wouldn’t have these memories, To cheer me when I’m sad. And I might not be a hunter, But I am, Thanks to Dad.
Fortunately, my father is still around today. At the age of 60, he still puts on the miles in the mountains despite a bad back and a sciatic nerve that will flare up, bringing him to his knees mid-hike. He will take a couple of days to recover, but back to the mountains he goes. In fact, this past spring my ole’ man had his best season of shed antler hunting. His legs covered 150+ miles while packing several hundred pounds of elk and deer antlers. That sort of love for the outdoors is the passion that I grew up observing as a youngster. That desire to be in the mountains was instilled in me from day one. I know that someday the inevitable will occur, and I’ll no longer have Dad around to join me for a hike, to help pack out and process game, or take a ride through mountains. I dread that appreciation, and even a hint of remorse when day, but I will be so thankful for the ride. it all occurs, whether your own or another’s That is what hunting means for so many of success. I have been working and enjoying the outdoors in the area for about 6 years now. It has become a second home. The morning hunt started off with a beautiful bull bugling and pushing cows from the hay meadow below to the timbered
mountains above. We gave it our best effort to cut the elk off and get within archery range. Keeping up with elk is like a sloth running down an antelope. Needless to say, we didn’t have success in the form of an elk on the ground; ours came in the form of the joy of the hunt with good friends.
A busy new career path has slightly hindered my ability to be in the mountains as much as I have been in past years. However, this has led to a newfound appreciation for my physical ability to hike around amongst the game when the opportunity arises, and the desire to share it with others. I will never again take for granted the opportunity to enjoy Mother Nature’s most beautiful creations that I have been afforded for so many years in this place I call home.
I took off hiking on a solo hunt right from our hunting camp the following evening. It was one of the most beautiful evenings of hunting I’ve ever experienced. There wasn’t a cloud in After all, that’s what it’s all about. sight, the temperature was a comfortable 65 degrees, and the aspen trees were beginning to show their vibrant shades of yellow and orange. The picturesque, autumn scene had me in awe even after 28 years of experiencing days like that day. I sat down to take in the satisfying quietness of the mountain. The only sound was that of the very slight breeze blowing in my face and the occasional creak of a tall pine tree. Two bull elk engaged in a verbal disagreement and bugled frequently during the last few minutes before sunset, and I was able to get within 100 yards of a nice six-point bull. I walked out empty-handed that evening, reminiscing on a memorable hunt.
About the author: Nick was born and raised in SW Montana and attended the University of Montana where he studied Human Biology. Nick grew up hunting and fishing Montana’s mountains and streams. He volunteers as a part-time American Legion baseball coach and Little League umpire. He also loves country music and shed antler hunting with his yellow lab, Duke, and of course, his Dad.

Montana has about 100 mountain ranges and a little over 90 breweries, or roughly one brewery per mountain range. Each mountain range features unique hikes, lakes, peaks, skiing, and more. Just like our mountains, each brewery features a unique atmosphere of Montana beers and friendly people that you might not find in more crowded places around the country. As a fervent beer enthusiast with a passion for Montana, it is my pleasure to offer my insight on these two topics and the lifestyle they offer in tandem. Beer History Beer has been a part of human history for a long time. According to ambar.com, beer was invented by women a little more than 7,000 years ago in Mesopotamia by combining mixed grains of cereal with water and herbs. In China, residue on pottery dating back 5,000 years shows beer was brewed using barley and other grains. In any case, beer is not a recent creation. Montana brewers have accelerated the evolution of beer by creating unique character and flavor of their brews well beyond historical expectations. How Hops Saved the (Beer) World IPA stands for India Pale Ale and is one of today’s most popular beer styles. India Pale Ales came about because British soldiers stationed in India in the late 1700s and early 1800s demanded the British Empire provide them with beer. Traveling from England to India in those days was a six-month journey, and beer couldn’t survive that distance. Beer would spoil before reaching the thirsty soldiers in India. Hops have antioxidants and are a natural preservative so brewers in England decided to try adding more hops to the beer being sent to India. It worked! The additional hops preserved the beer and it was still desirable following the 6-month voyage from England to India. Now India Pale Ales, or IPAs, are one of the most popular styles of beer worldwide. Montana IPAs, or MPAs Montana IPAs range from being rich, full-bodied and amber colored, to light-bodied, light-colored brews tasting like a citrusy tropical drink. The difference in taste comes from the hops and how they are utilized. Which hops are selected and when they are introduced in the process make a surprising difference in flavor. For example, Hat Trick IPA from Tamarack Brewery
includes abundant quantities of three different hops. (The term Hat Trick refers to three goals in the hockey world.) Thus, Hat Trick IPA is an outstanding beer proudly featuring three different hops used in its creation. Another popular IP is Shady, from Kettlehouse Brewery. This IPA has a flavor almost entirely opposite of Hat Trick. Nine different hops are used in Shady, which create a delicious, citrusy flavor. If you taste both Hat Trick and Shady, you may wonder why are both considered IPAs? The answer goes back to realizing the magic of hops in brewing beer. A personal favorite is Double Haul IPA, from Kettlehouse Brewery in Missoula. Double Haul is named for a unique fly-fishing casting technique when you haul on both the backward and forward motions of the line. It is a big, full-bodied, Montana beer – much in line with its namesake. Montana IPAs have become so diverse and desirable
that perhaps they deserve their own name? Montana IPAs include Montana barley, Montana water, and hops mostly grown by our neighborly friends in Washington. How does MPA, for Montana Pale Ale, sound? Giving credit to Montana for creating the beer seems much more appropriate. Just an idea to think about the next time you are savoring a beer crafted and brewed in Montana. The Founding Ales Moose Drool, from Big Sky Brewery, helped reveal how strong the demand was for locally crafted Montana beer. This happened all the way back in the 1990s. Moose Drool is a brown ale that became an instant hit and remains an outstanding selection of many beer drinkers today. The success of Moose Drool displayed the potential of Montana beer.
Cold Smoke, a Scotch Ale created by Kettlehouse Brewery, is another example of creative brewers generating new fans of Montana beer using a style not native to the U.S. Scotch Ales are relatively rare in the beer world, but Kettlehouse and other Montana breweries have made Scotch Ales a favorite. The name Cold Smoke comes from deep, dry powder snow that turns into smoke as you glide through turns in Montana’s mountains. If the state could name a beer as its own, it may just be Cold Smoke. Montana Breweries Montana breweries do more than sell remarkable locally crafted beer. Montana breweries are places for communities to gather; where you may learn what the right ski wax or dry fly is for the day. Montana breweries are places for families to enjoy a break, or a place for conversation and laughter with old and new friends. And, of course, the perfect place to talk about the upcoming Griz-Cat game. Breweries are found in big and small towns throughout Montana. It’s hard to beat taking a seat in the Beaverhead Brewery in Dillon where you might hear a professor from The University of Montana Western, talking with her students. Or, perhaps the local ranchers complaining about the weather. Montana’s smallest breweries provide some of the most appealing treasures. You may not find beer from Cut Bank Creek Brewery (Cut Bank), Bandit Brewery (Darby), or the Busted Knuckle Brewery (Glasgow) in your local grocery store, but you can be sure to find something special at each one of them. These smaller breweries make up part of the fastest growing manufacturing divisions in the state, with Montana topping over 90 breweries to date. Like each uniquely brewed beer has a story to tell, so too does each brewery founder. The owners and founders of Imagine Nation Brewery, located in Missoula, came up with the concept of their business after spending decades working in conflict zones such as South Sudan, Lebanon, Georgia, Azerbaujan and Armenia. They wanted to continue their work giving back to communities, and at the same time, create a space where they could make a difference. The results? A microbrewery “where people could sit around a table, enjoying sipping a beer but connecting and talking about the challenge that we as a society and humanity face”. The beers at Imagine Nation can’t be beat, and their commitment to the community, which extends far beyond Missoula, is a testament to the founders’ passion. Well, now what? My friend and neighbor Mike Reider had drawn a Shiras moose tag in Idaho three years prior. He took a nice moose with his bow and I helped him pack it out. At his urging, I put in for the lottery drawing for the same unit. Mike and I both live along a stretch of the Snake River in

t’s getting too dark for the camera. Let’s get out of here and come back tomorrow.” I had been calling to the bull moose for what seemed like forever, trying to coax him across a beaver dam and into the open so we could get a look at him. But now our hopes were fading as fast as the light. We were filming this hunt for the World of Sports Afield TV show, and even though there was still plenty of shooting light
Mike and I both live along a stretch of the Snake River in Idaho that is fabulous moose habitat, and fortunately the wolves haven’t decimated the moose in this area, yet. A couple of months later I received a text from Mike telling me the draw results were out and had been posted online. I wasn’t too excited because in sixteen years of putting in for tags in several states for numerous species, I had never drawn a single tag. I logged on to check the results, and to my astonishment was met with “Congratulations!” I called Mike and told him the drawing results were apparently posted in some foreign language I’d never seen before: I had drawn a once-in-a-lifetime Shiras moose permit. This would be a do-it-yourself hunt on public land, and much of the area is accessible only by boat. Because the unit was so close to home, I took my ten-year-old son, Logan, along on my frequent summer scouting trips to different islands in the river. We found abundant moose sign and soon narrowed our search down to a few very productive-looking islands and crossings. Although the sign told us the moose were there, we didn’t lay eyes on even one moose during our scouting trips. We hung some trail cameras and soon were reassured by pictures of numerous moose using the crossings, including some very impressive bulls. One beaver dam crossing in particular had a number of moose using it, including a couple of decent bulls, one very long-tined bull, and one monster of a bull. The first photo we saw of the big bull was taken in the dark and we couldn’t really make out the features of the velvet-covered rack, but Mike exclaimed, “He looks like the Hulk!” So he was dubbed. Later daylight pictures revealed the Hulk had massive fronts, long points, and

very respectable palms. We knew we were looking at a record-class bull. With high anticipation, I waited for the opening of the season. I decided to focus my efforts on the beaver dam crossing, hoping for a chance at Long Tines or, preferably, the Hulk. Because my hunt unit encompasses a great deal of agricultural land and many residential areas along the Snake River, it is designated a short-range-weapons-only unit. This limited me to using a bow, muzzleloader, pistol, or shotgun with slugs. Having grown up in Iowa, which is a short-range-weapons-only deer-hunting state, I was quite familiar with the capabilities of the shotgun slug and just happened to have an extremely accurate Mossburg Model 695 bolt-action dedicated slug gun in my gun safe. I got some Hornady SST slugs, mounted a Trijicon 1–4x Accupoint scope, and soon was shooting sub-inch groups with the combination at 100 yards. I was ready; all I needed was for the bulls to stay in their pattern. The season opened and I began to spend mornings and evenings sitting at the crossing with Mike, who had volunteered to be my cameraman. For the first several days, this strategy yielded nothing but sightings of a few deer and one very large beaver that would emerge to survey his territory each evening. Finally, one beautiful morning, we caught some movement to our left. “Moose!” Mike whispered excitedly. It was a small bull, but it looked like one of the bulls that had been accompanying the bigger bulls we were looking for. He disappeared for a time behind some brush and we strained our eyes, hoping for a glimpse of one of his larger companions. Soon the small bull reappeared and made his way right up to our position. He came up to about thirty yards and began browsing right in front of us. He was a beautiful sight in the morning light, surrounded by the fall colors. Suddenly he turned and stared back at the crossing. We heard brush breaking and the sounds of heavy hoofs on rocks. We were on high alert and filled with anticipation. I had the shotgun ready and Mike had the camera trained on the crossing when a black nose appeared through the brush, and out stepped . . . an Angus cow. Such are the perils of hunting on public land in the middle of an agricultural area. The small moose blessed us with his presence for a few more minutes and then ambled back into the brush. There was no sign of any of his larger brethren. That evening we again sat overlooking the crossing. We could hear a bull moose grunting not far away but never laid eyes on him. Nonetheless, we were encouraged. Mike had to leave for Wyoming for an elk hunt, so we made a plan to continue the moose hunt in a couple of weeks when he returned. Only two days had gone by when I received a text: “You ready to go moose hunting tomorrow?”
Mike had shot a nice bull elk in Wyoming, packed it out nine miles, was home, and had a couple of days before he had to head back to Wyoming to help his buddies. We made a quick plan for an evening hunt the following day. I picked up Logan from school that afternoon, and he hurriedly finished his homework on the drive home so he could go with us. We met up with Mike and the three of us headed for the river and launched the boat. Remembering the bull we’d heard grunting two days ago, I brought along a birchbark moose call that the camp cook had made for me on a successful moose hunt in Alberta a couple of years before. It was early, so we still-hunted on a couple of other islands we wanted to scout, hung another trail camera, and then, as evening approached, headed for the beaver dam crossing. Mike cut the motor and paddled the boat into an inlet to keep the noise down. After unloading we made our way to the trail camera to see what activity there had been in the two days since our last sit. Incredibly, both of the big bulls had crossed the river within the past forty-eight hours. Excited that the bulls were still in the area, we headed for our spot on a point overlooking the crossing. I let out a few bull grunts and started raking the brush with my call. I repeated the sequence several times, but the only thing that made an appearance was a huge skunk. The sun was just settling on the far horizon as I tried calling once again.
Waugh, came a response. I called again, and again heard a waugh from the brush on the far side of the crossing. The moose wasn’t far off, but was hidden behind a screen of brush and trees. I started raking the brush and he instantly reciprocated. I could hear his antlers raking against brush and branches. His call was deep and guttural, but we could see nothing of him. We were losing light fast as I traded challenges with the moose, both of us calling and raking the brush. My adrenaline was flowing and Logan was getting so excited he was shaking. We seemed to be at a stalemate. Finally I told my companions that we had best quit messing with him and get out of there so we wouldn’t spoil it for a later opportunity. The words had hardly left my mouth when, like a ghost, the moose appeared on the far side of the crossing. He was obviously big, but we couldn’t tell which bull it was from the side view he presented. I held the bright red triangle reticle of the Trijicon on his shoulder as he made his way across the beaver dam. Then the words “It’s too dark” came from my left. I lowered the shotgun as the moose disappeared into the brush on our side of the crossing. I could hear the disappointed sigh from Logan as he expressed the emotion we were all feeling. Mike zoomed the camera back out and said he thought there would be enough light if the moose came into the clearing close to us. I began calling and raking again, and the response was immediate. I could see the moose coming through the brush, grunting all the way: Waugh. Waugh. I responded and raked the brush with vigor. This was it. Now he was coming to kick some butt. I readied for the shot, thinking I might have to shoot in self-defense when he found that the source of his irritation was not another bull moose but only three scrawny humans. “I’ll let you know,” Mike said, keeping the camera on the incoming moose. The bull cleared the brush and stopped thirty yards away. The massive fronts gave away his identity. It was the Hulk! “Too dark?” I whispered. “Not too bad.” The bull came another ten or fifteen yards straight toward us and stopped, fixated on us, huge in the camera’s viewfinder. Shred-

ded velvet hung from his antlers, adding to his intimidating appearance. Mike said, “I’ve got him.” The 12-gauge broke the silence and the bull whirled. I bolted in another round and hit him again, in the shoulder. He took two steps and tipped over into the brush. “Good job, Dad! That was awesome!” exclaimed Logan. I asked, “What did you think as he was coming in?” “I was ready to run!” he replied. We all laughed and headed to look at the massive bull lying just a few yards away. As we came around the brush, we were amazed. Before us lay a behemoth of a Shiras moose! Everything about him was even bigger than we’d thought. Antler width, points, and body size all exceeded our wildest expectations. After handshakes, hugs, and photos, we began the tremendous task of field-dressing the moose and removing the quarters. The river was strewn with downed trees, and we knew that navigating it in the foggy darkness in a small boat laden with hundreds of pounds of moose meat would be too dangerous. The temperature was supposed to drop into the 30s overnight, so we weren’t worried about spoilage and decided to return the next day to pack the moose out. It was late, and the trip out was slow and nerve-racking, but we were all grinning from ear to ear. I looked back at Logan and saw that he was smiling, looking up
at the stars, obviously soaking it all in. We had just experienced one of those cherished moments you can’t script or buy. “What do you think?” I asked him. “I almost cried, I’m so happy,” was his response. We shared a smile and he went back to looking at the stars. The next morning dawned clear, beautiful, and cold. We made our way back downriver still riding the high from the previous night’s events. The river was alive with eagles, ospreys, waterfowl, and pelicans. We beached the boat and readied for the daunting task ahead, which, strangely, I was looking forward to. Fortunately we were able to get a little game cart to our fallen giant and, four heavy loads later, our boat was sitting much lower in the water. The moose rack riding on the bow was wider than the boat itself. When we put a tape on the antlers we were astonished once again. The Hulk had ten points on one side and twelve on the other. His fronts had four points per side and when we stretched the tape across the spread it went clear to 51½ inches. This was truly a magnificent bull for a once-in-a-lifetime tag. Best of all, I had shared the adventure with a good friend and my son. The hunt for the Hulk is one of my most treasured moments afield—one, I hope, of many more to come. Families are gathering to celebrate the holidays, white fluffy snow seems magical, and even blizzards will bring couples closer together as they nestle cozily under a wool blanket by the fire listening to Christmas carols. Yes, wintertime in Idaho is a wonderful season - that is, November and December. Then January happens. People start to dread the cold, and the wet, and the magical sense just experienced turns dreary, which describes North Idaho for almost a full third of the year. So, what can you do? You go ice fishing. Yep, ice fishing can seem like an arduous, and sometimes ridiculous winter activity often depicted in pop culture references as grumpy old men bickering about the frigid cold in their antiquated ice huts, staring into a dark hole not catching any fish. Or, people sitting on 5-gallon buckets in subzero temperatures slowly succumbing to hypothermia. But, I’ll let you in on a little secret; ice fishing can be fun! Especially if you are prepared, and mostly if you are up for a little adventure.
Ice fishing is one of the few winter activities that can be done on a shoe-string budget, especially if your funds are limiting you from other cold weather sports such as skiing and snowmobiling. For under $100 you can fill your truck up with gas, get an economy model ice fishing reel/pole, ice auger, bait (more on that later), basic terminal tackle, a 5 gallon bucket and catch fish. Yes, it really can be that economical. But, here’s the best part, that’s really all you need to get out on the ice to enjoy one of the best winter time sports. Of course you can always splurge on the portable ice house, the motorized auger, the snowmobile, and the dozens of tip-ups that can be acquired with each trip out to the ice. It is very easy to get encumbered at the sporting goods store with thoughts like, ‘what else SHOULD I buy?’ So if you find yourself in this predicament, remember my favorite simple acronym – and one that I tell myself whenever my eyes get bigger than my wallet - K.I.S.S. (Keep it Simple, Stupid).
Be Prepared - Before You Go!

Let’s talk about safety on the ice and planning before you decide to venture into the wonderfully wild world of hardwater fishing. First of all, always talk to knowledgeable experts at your local sporting goods store before you plan your first trip. Ice conditions can vary as much as the weather varies here in the Pacific Northwest. Just because you drove by the lake a week ago, and you saw anglers out on the ice, it does not mean this week the ice conditions are safe. There are two items one should never go without when venturing out onto a seemingly frozen body of water: ice picks and a life vest. Ice picks can literally save your life if you happen to take an ice bath. They allow you to plant anchor points as you kick and crawl out of the water back on to the ice. Life vests help you stay afloat when the freezing water has shocked your body into premature rigor mortis and makes moving extremely difficult. And, like all plans that involve the great outdoors, always tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be home.

Anglers can target almost every single fish species that we have available to us during the warm weather season. This includes bass, trout, pike, kokanee, catfish, and panfish just to name a few. Panfish are probably the most targeted catch since they stay fairly active in the winter months. They are found outside of weed edges and on flats in most lakes and ponds. These fellas can be successfully targeted using a simple hook, maggot or worm for bait, and a split shot sinker. If they are within the sight, smell, or ear shot of your bait they will come to investigate. If after 15-20 minutes you haven’t had so much of a nibble, it’s time to relocate on the ice.
Northern Pike are likely the second most targeted species in the winter and require some additional equipment. Tip ups are the go-to method for hardwater pike fishing. A tip up is essentially line on a spool connected to a rod that has a trigger. This is attached to another rod with a spring that has a flag on it that triggers when the spool gets activated by a bite. In Idaho, each angler is allowed up to 5 lines in the water during the winter months unless there are specific restrictions to the lake (refer to IDFG fishing regulations). That means with 5 tip ups you can cover a vast amount of water looking for the cruising pike hunting for an easy meal. Pike fishing is usually done in the same areas as panfish. The predominant bait used for targeting pike is a herring rigged up to a quick strike rig. This allows the herring to sit in the water column naturally and appear like a suspended baitfish. But, truth be told, there are some old pike fisherman out there who even use hot dogs rigged the same way with outstanding success. Kokanee are another heavily targeted game fish and for good reason. The small, landlocked Sockeye Salmon make excellent table fare whether smoked, pan fried, BBQ’d, or baked in the oven. These fish tend to be cyclical and their size and numbers can vary drastically from year to year. Kokanee also require a lot more prehardwater scouting since they tend to be open water schooling fish. The best bets catching winter kokanee include fishing deeper water (sometimes up to 100’ deep if the ice is thick enough), using portable fish finders, and jigs tipped with corn beneath a small flasher. This is where local knowledge and friendly anglers help a lot.
Fishing for Kokanee can be feast or famine. You will have days where 8 hours on the ice yields nothing but a sore butt and cold fingers. You will also have days where the first spot you drill is right on top of a school and you limit out in 15 minutes. Mobile fish finders/flashers help a lot when trying to dial into the school at the right depth.
Tip Up Rig
Whether you’re the 5-gallon bucket angler, or the fancy ice house angler, it only matters that you get out there an enjoy it. YouTube is a great teacher for those new to the sport. Even if you’re the DIY kind of fisherman there’s always something to learn from someone else. So take a few days this year and go experience this wonderful winter sport that millions of anglers participate in across the US – and especially in Idaho from January til the ice melts.
