RANCHING IN MONTANA Generations of Land Stewardship and Community Written by: Jamie Heinrich Photography courtesy of: Erika Peterman
If you travel about an hour and a half east of Montana’s capital, Helena, you will stumble upon White Sulphur Springs, a town full of western spirit and country charm. This quintessential small town welcomes all with their mineralized hot springs and the historic “Castle Mansion.” However, the unique geographical features of the town is not what makes it so special - it’s the people, connected by rich cultural history, and a sense of community from generations of sharing land and lifestyle.
C
learwater’s own Leanne Bodell, a fifth generation rancher, calls White Sulphur Springs home. When Leanne is not serving her community as a successful Broker and Regional Manager for Clearwater Montana Properties, she lives and works with her husband and youngest daughter on the 505 Ranch, which has been in his family for four generations. Leanne’s family heritage connects to the town’s unique history as her great-great grandfather was “integral” in laying out the plans for Richard Harlow’s ‘Jawbone Railway.’ Built in the 1880’s, the ‘Jawbone Railway’ ran through White Sulphur Springs and spanned from Helena to Lewistown. It was built to connect the booming mining culture throughout the Castle Mountains and to provide much needed resources to the towns. It eventually connected to the booming wool industry in
nearby Martinsdale. While White Sulphur Springs is named for its historic thermal hot springs that have been used for hundreds of years as a place of peace, rest, and healing, the town is a gold mine for deeply rooted history. The earliest recorded western settlement in the area was attributed to the discovery of gold in Madison County in 1863. This discovery attracted miners and prospectors, resulting in the exploration throughout the mountainous regions of Meagher County, leading to the unearthing of other various sources of mineral wealth. The wealth was then put to use in many unique ways. As the story goes, Byron Roger Sherman built ‘The Castle’ of White Sulphur Springs in 1892 as an attempt to “woo a lady here in our county. He built the castle out of stone from the Castle Mountains, [it] sits up on the highest point of town. It’s
beautiful, and now a museum,” said Leanne. The castle is listed as the only known historic castle in Montana by Into the Little Belts and the property is adorned with the finest materials and artwork. After spending some time away from home, Leanne returned to White Sulphur Springs as she reconnected with her high school sweetheart. “It’s a special place. It’s not on any major thoroughfares or anything like that, so it’s quiet and peaceful,” recounted Leanne. She continued: “[The small town is] really special to me and I think a lot of it has to do with the residents. They’re very supportive of one another and we have a lot of great neighbors; we all work together and help one another. Whether it’s branding cattle, shipping cattle, working cattle, or whatever it is you’re doing, everyone gets together. Then it’s a
celebration - we eat together, we have drinks together and there’s lots of laughing and camaraderie. I think all of those things with just the community members is what makes it super special.” The lifestyle of ranching in Montana is not for the fainthearted or those afraid to get their boots dirty. To the few who understand the hard work and what ‘four cows to every one person’ means personally - ranching truly becomes something much greater. For Leanne, “ranching means keeping history and heritage alive, you know, ranching is one of the biggest commodities in this state. It’s an industry that is very much needed, but it’s also a way of life where I want to make sure that I raise my four-year-old in.” Ranching in Montana also requires a level of respect for the land you are working. “I just believe in good stewardship
of the land,” said Leanne, “They always say, ‘buy land they’re not making anymore’ and if you own it, you know you have to care for it. I feel absolutely blessed to be where I am, and to have the land and to have the neighbors and the community I do here.” Leanne is no stranger to working hard and stewarding land well. Her family’s ranch is just down the road from White Sulphur Springs in nearby Ringling.
as much on the hour as it does the season. Throughout spring calving season, Leanne can be seen with her muck boots on moving pairs, cleaning stalls, feeding the crew and so much more. An hour later, she’s out the door heading to a showing or client meeting, accommodating the amazing people who live and work in White Sulphur Springs as well as the influx of people ready to move to the bustling community.
“Growing up on a ranch was, in my opinion, the greatest thing. I feel like I’m fortunate to have grown up that way.” shared Leanne. “Whether we were working together or playing together, we [Leanne’s family] were, and are, all really close, and I think that ranch life creates a pretty positive atmosphere to be cohesive as a family.” The daily responsibilities of living and working on a ranch changes
Leanne, her husband, and neighbors branding cattle at their ranch.
With a lifetime of ranching experience and over 25 years of real estate experience, Leanne now specializes in farm, ranch, and recreational real estate as a Broker and Regional Manager with Clearwater Montana Properties. She feels her experience in ranching gives her a leg up as she can speak the language of ranching. “I can talk about how many animal units, water systems and any other things that pertain to the life.” Leanne describes her interest in selling farm and ranch land in the area as a fifth generation rancher, “It’s interesting to see what people’s long term plans are when they purchase a piece of property that has been historically used for cattle. Sometimes it’s a little bittersweet to see them use it for something different, but not everyone wants the same things, so you just have to be really open minded to what they’re going to do and talk with them. Sometimes it’s really fun.”
As a Regional Manager and a local, Leanne also knows the recreational gems White Sulphur Springs has to offer. “No matter what your interests are, especially if you’re an outdoor recreationalist, there’s always something fun to do,” said Leanne. “Yesterday, I went snowmobiling into a listing of mine and it was so much fun, and I just didn’t want it to be over.” Between the friendly tourism industry, the thriving local business across Main Street, the stunning natural resources and the supportive community - it is no surprise White Sulphur Springs has seen some rapid growth in the past five years. “We have a great community of people here and they’re super supportive, and, of course, I think it’s great to live here because it’s so peaceful,” shared Leanne. We’re also lucky to have a couple different grocery stores, banks, and a great medical facility.” White Sulphur Springs offers visitors outdoor opportunities such as fabulous elk hunting, hiking, access to snowmobiling and skiing, all followed by a soak in the thermal hot springs or a float down the Smith River. The Smith River flows through the 505 Ranch and in the summer Leanne will often “blow up the giant flamingos and go down there with Josie [her daughter] and float on the river for a while.” When you plan your visit to White Sulphur Springs Leanne recommends a stop at local restaurants such as The Jawbone and Jesse Pepper’s Smoke Shack, followed by a trip to 2 Basset Brewery. Head out to Newlan Creek Reservoir for a swim and water-ski in the summer, or ice fishing in the winter, but do remember not all back roads have access throughout the winter in Meagher County. Take a step off the beaten path and explore one of the most unique Montana destinations. The special community in White Sulphur Springs value and support each other and the land they live, work, and walk on every day. If a deep connection to nature and people are important to you, this is the place to visit. So when you’re doing 77 on I-90, take a detour to White Sulphur Springs.
Lewis and Clark explored this vast wilderness in the early 1800’s, and more than two centuries later, there is still a lot to discover in Montana. Adventure seekers enjoy hundreds of miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, ATVing and skiing. More than 3,200 crystal clear lakes are dispersed across this northern wonderland, perfect for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, fishing and boating. Montana is home to the largest elk herd in the U.S. as well as mass populations of bison, bears, and bald eagles. With an awe-inspiring landscape, the Treasure State is The Last Best Place for you to Stake Your Claim®. All of Montana is a recreational mecca, and where you choose to live simply depends on your style.

Exploring Southern Montana Peaks to Plains, Past to Present by Jenna Boltz
A
lot of people think of Glacier National Park, Flathead Lake or Big Sky when they think of Montana, but locals and adventure seekers know that Southern Montana expanding east to Billings and beyond is where miles upon miles of untouched beauty can be found. From peaks to plains, Southern Montana is peppered with small-town charm, incredible history, and infinite open horizons. These areas are where infamous figures like Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid, and Calamity Jane called home. Long before that, many Native American people of various tribes such as Crow and Northern Cheyenne, flourished throughout the area. History buffs to culture junkies will love exploring all that this vast land offers. Bozeman is a vibrant place with all the things you want from a college town: great restaurants, nightlife, incredible live music, and thriving arts and culture, all surrounded by countless recreational possibilities. Bozeman was founded in 1864 by John Bozeman, a frontiersman from Georgia who led wagon trains west to the gold fields in the Montana Territory along the Bozeman Trail, a branch of the Oregon Trail. The town served as a supply hub for prospectors looking to strike it rich. Today, year-round festivals, concerts, museums,
and shopping elevate “the West’s best mountain town”. The nearby Bridger Range, to the north, and the Spanish Peaks, to the south, have amazing trails for skiing, biking, and hiking. Before the arrival of permanent settlers, the Red Lodge countryside and surrounding valley was Crow country, serving as a place to worship, rest and hunt for their people. Rocky Fork Coal Company opened the area’s first mine in 1887, and hundreds of immigrants from around the world arrived looking for work. Just a few years later, the Sundance Kid and crew famously robbed the local bank… or did they? Others claim that the “Wild Bunch” got cold feet and split. After the suspects left town, Sheriff John Dunn, with a posse in tow, took up the pursuit. The bandits were captured near Lavina, but the Sundance Kid evaded arrest. Later the Great Depression shut down the coal mines and bootlegging became the town’s main export, and a couple of decades later, tourism and ranching replaced coal and bootlegging. Now, Red Lodge is an agricultural town full of appeal. Red Lodge’s neighboring Custer-Gallatin National Forest comprises over three million acres and includes both the AbsarokaBeartooth and Lee Metcalf Wilderness within its boundaries. The Beartooth Mountains are home
to the highest 41 peaks in Montana including Granite Peak, which at 12,807 ft is the highest point in Montana. It serves as the northeastern gateway to Yellowstone National Park. Tucked away in the rugged mountains, over 700 glaciers can still be found in the Beartooths. Elk, deer, grizzly bear, black bear, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, mountain lions, and many other animals call the Beartooth Mountains home. The Beartooth Highway, which opened in 1936, is commonly known as one of the world’s most beautiful and dramatic roads. Billings, otherwise known as “The Magic City of Montana”, was established in 1882 and named after Fredrick H. Billings, president of the Northern Pacific Railway. The city was formed by the railroad as its railhead for further westward expansion. It was aptly nicknamed “The Magic City” due to its rapid growth as 2,000 buildings were built within the first few months of being settled. To go back before this time, visit the Pictograph State Park to learn more about prehistoric hunters that called Montana their home over 2,000 years ago. These hunters left behind thousands of artifacts and over 100 pictographs as well. Artifacts that were excavated from the site include stone tools, weapons, paintings, and various other instruments used. The pictographs’ interpretations are still subject to debate, but the images of animals, warriors, and even rifles tell a story that has lasted thousands of years. The Billings International airport is a convenient gateway to Big Sky Country and beyond. Billings is a central point to some of the best southern Montana attractions, and the city is alive with street festivals, outdoor concerts, sporting events, and recreation. East of Billings, hidden in a vast open landscape of rolling hills and the biggest sky, lie some treasures that would stun even the most seasoned and well-traveled hikers and horseback riders around the state. One of those treasures is the Ashland Ranger District. The expanse, much like others we’ve already mentioned, provides endless opportunities for outdoor recreation, including hiking,
riding, camping, hunting, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. Included in this block of federal land are three designated hiking and riding areas – the Tongue River Breaks, Cook Mountain, and King Mountain, all of which are closed to motorized vehicles and make up more than 40,000 acres of pristine wild country. The Warrior Trail Highway will take you on a scenic drive through Custer National Forest and the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation before ending at the Little Bighorn Battlefield, just outside of Crow Agency, Montana. This is the shortest route from Mount Rushmore to the Little Bighorn Battlefield. This is where Custer’s Last Stand took place, the infamous battle where the Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes went head-to-head with the 7th Calvary Regiment of the United States Army. Warriors, Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, lead these tribes to victory over the U.S. forces, resulting in the most significant action of Native Americans fighting for their land. If you’ve never visited the battle site, it is easily worth the stop. Park rangers and indigenous guides give tours of the battlefield where white gravestones mark the spots where hundreds of soldiers fell. The expanse between Custer-Gallatin National Forest and the Tongue River Breaks creates a sparsely populated mecca of recreation, wildlife, and splendor. The towns throughout this region hold important pieces of our nation’s history. American writer John Steinbeck once called this area a “love affair.” It’s easy to see why. Southeastern Montana’s diverse landscape of badlands, flatlands, mountains, and rolling hills is one of few places where the Wild West lives on. Jenna Boltz is the Chief Operating Officer for Clearwater Properties and was born in Sheridan, Wyoming. With a passion for the outdoors, particularly throughout Montana and Wyoming, she resides in Seeley Lake, Montana. Jenna is a bit of a history buff, active conservationist, and contributing writer for Clearwater’s various publications. In her downtime, Jenna explores the outdoors by means of kayak, snowshoes, or some heavy-duty backpacking gear with her family and two black labs.

Let’s Go Soak!
Hot Springs of Montana and the Yellowstone Region
I
f you haven’t heard, the western United States has the largest number of naturally occurring hot springs of anywhere in North America. Simply put, hot springs are created by superheated water that rises through fractures in the Earth’s surface eventually cooling to emerge as a source of hot mineral water. Since we are geographically very close to Yellowstone National Park, the world’s largest active volcano system, this area also encompasses one of the greatest concentrations of hydrothermal features. Humans have enjoyed and benefited from these hydrothermal features for thousands of years, and the Indigenous People of North America considered hot springs as sacred places where the “Great Spirit” lived. Believing in the miraculous healing powers of the heated mineral water, these indigenous people designated these areas as neutral ground where many different tribes could relax and enjoy them at the same time, without conflict.
Here, we have compiled a list of some of our favorite commercial, and a few non-commercial, hot springs to explore throughout this region, and we encourage you to give each of them a visit!
Commercial Hot Springs Boulder Hot Springs Inn and Spa This historic inn is located between Butte and Helena just off I-15 and rests in the midst of SW Montana’s spectacular beauty of snow-capped mountains and lush valleys. www.boulderhotsprings.com 406-225-4339 | Boulder, MT Bozeman Hot Springs For more than a century, visitors have come to relax in these natural hot springs. A small pool enjoyed only by a few in the late 1800s, has evolved into a destination for residents and tourists alike. www.bozemanhotsprings.co 406-586-6492 | Bozeman, MT
Today, as the popularity of hot springs has increased, coupled with the trend towards getting back to nature, it has become increasingly important to honor, preserve and protect these unique features - not unlike the earliest settlers of these lands. We are blessed to have access to so many different hydrothermal hot springs. Some have been commercialized and modernized, while being surrounded by their location’s unique natural beauty. Others remain undeveloped and ready for the outdoor enthusiast to seek out on their own adventure across the landscape. Whichever way you prefer to enjoy these relaxing and potentially healing waters, there is nothing quite like sitting in a hot spring surrounded by friends and family.

Idaho
Idaho’s brilliant scenery includes 18 ski resorts with epic backcountry terrain, making this gorgeous sector your new favorite powder playground. Residents enjoy the many features here, particularly the 3,100 miles of winding rivers, more than any other state. Shoshone Falls, aptly nicknamed the Niagara of the West, boasts a drop that is 45 feet farther than the real Niagara Falls. Idaho’s combined wilderness spans over 4.7 million acres, and at 7,900 feet, Hells Canyon is the deepest gorge in the United States, even deeper than the Grand Canyon. With so many scenic treasures, Idaho can easily be considered the hidden gem of the west.

The Bedroom Window Ram Story by James C. Reed
Photos by James C. and Logan Reed
A young sheep hunter braves the hazards of the Idaho mountains in search of a very special bighorn.
A
s I watched the bighorn ram bedded beneath the cliff, I wondered what was taking my son Logan so long to arrive. He had been glassing above me, and when I spotted the ram I had motioned him to come down, around a large cliff face, to where I was. Suddenly I heard some rocks falling from the cliff and then experienced a fa-
ther’s nightmare. Out of a crack in the cliff something fell, landing on the rock slide below, and began rolling down the jumble of rocks. Watching in horror, I saw arms flailing and hunting gear strewn down the mountain face. What should have been a great moment suddenly turned to a jolt of fear for my son’s life.
Logan began his hunting career at a very young age, and his interest in hunting and trapping is insatiable. Only fourteen years old, he has continually impressed me with his patience and skill in hunting situations. I was thrilled when he told me in the spring of 2016 that he wanted to put in for the draw for bighorn sheep in the unit by our house in our home state of Idaho. I had put in for sheep in multiple states for nineteen years and never had success in drawing. I found out in June that the draw results were available and hurried to check what I knew would be a familiar “sorry, you were unsuccessful” response. I typed in our numbers, closed my eyes, and hit “enter.” When I opened my eyes I was shocked to see on the screen, “Congratulations! You are successful in drawing a bighorn sheep tag.” Even more astonishing, both of us had drawn. We now had two of the only four tags in this unit. I had drawn in my twentieth year of trying, Logan in his first. As I related in my story in the July/August issue, earlier in the season we had tried shooting at two rams at the same time. I got mine, but quickly went from sheer exuberance to a feeling of guilt, realizing Logan had missed. But Logan said, “You know, Dad, I’m actually glad it worked out this way. I would have loved to have gotten that ram but at least it was a clean miss and I got to share the experience of you
getting your ram. Plus, now our hunt isn’t over, which means we get to spend more time on the mountain together.” After packing out my ram, we regrouped and headed back up the mountain in search of a ram for Logan. We searched for two days but could not locate the same band of rams again. In the afternoon of the third day we had traveled several miles along the ridges where the rams had been all summer. Then the weather began to turn. Soon it was blowing and starting to rain and then snow. We decided instead of spending an uncomfortable night on the mountain, we would head down to the house. The following morning I looked out at the mountain and saw it was still clouded over. We slept in a while longer and when I awoke, the clouds had lifted. I walked into Logan’s room and woke him. As we were talking, I looked out of his bedroom window and noticed something on the mountain. I told him there was an animal over there and hurried to grab my binocular. As I put up my bino I couldn’t believe my eyes. I had spotted a bighorn ram from my son’s bedroom window! We hurriedly gathered our gear and headed out. After crossing the Salmon River, we watched the ram cross back over a saddle and out of sight. We worked our way up the

steep face to the top, hoping the ram had bedded in the cliffs just beyond the saddle. It took us an hour to reach the top of the mountain and we circled to get the wind in our favor and slowly approached the top of the cliff overlooking where we thought the ram had gone. We crept to the edge, slowly peeking over, and saw nothing. We moved along the rim, looking down in the rocks below, but could not locate the ram. We then moved to a point overlooking the saddle where the ram had made his appearance and subsequent retreat. I figured if he did reappear, he would use this saddle again. An hour or two passed with no sign of the ram. We decided on a plan where I would circle and slowly make my way along the cliff face. If the ram was still there, I might push him into the saddle where Logan had a great shooting position. I went back and down the mountain and began slowly working my way toward and underneath Logan’s perch. There was ram sign everywhere. Beds, tracks, and droppings littered the area. This ram had clearly been living here. I rounded a point and could see Logan on the cliff a few hundred yards away. I moved just a few yards more and something caught my eye up next to the cliff face. Tucked behind a boulder was a ram’s white butt! I dropped down and began frantically trying to get Logan’s attention. I finally did and gestured furiously to indicate I had spotted the ram and he should work his way around to my position. Of course, in my mind these frantic hand signals conveyed a clear message, but to Logan, not so much. Eventually I saw him gather his gear and head in the direction I had signaled, and then I lost sight of him. I sat, anxiously awaiting his arrival. That’s when I heard rocks rolling from the cliff and saw the rolling mass with what appeared to be arms flailing, leaving a path of hunting gear strewn down the mountain. I hurriedly grabbed my binocular and, to my relief, saw that what had fallen down the cliff was just Logan’s backpack, not Logan himself. I was still concerned—where was he? I was relieved when he soon appeared and began

gathering his gear. I tried to signal him to go lower and work his way over to me, but to my dismay he went back up to the base of the cliff and began working his way across the bottom of the cliff face. The path he was on would take him within ten yards of the ram. I frantically waved my arms, then resorted to jumping up and down and waving my hat, but Logan took no notice. I was sure the ram would notice the commotion at any moment and bolt. Logan was now within thirty yards of the sheep. I decided I had nothing to lose at this point and I figured he should at least be ready for a possible shot when the ram bolted, so I yelled, “Logan!” Incredibly, he didn’t hear me, nor did the ram move. Now he was only twenty yards from the ram and I yelled louder, “Logan!” This time he froze, trying to locate me. Unbelievably, the ram stayed bedded through all of this. I motioned to Logan to go back. He reversed course and headed back across the boulder field. About halfway across the rock slide, a rock rolled under his feet and down he went. I saw him hug the rifle as he tumbled two full rolls down the steep slide. He sat for a moment to gather himself and then soldiered on, eventually reaching my position. I looked him over. He was cut and bruised, but gave me an exhausted smile. He had saved the rifle from any hits as well, but his arms and shoulder had paid for it. He explained what had happened. He had misunderstood my very clear (to me) hand signals, and came down the cliff in a crack. He got to a spot where he was hung up, so he unraveled a paracord bracelet he had made and lowered his pack with it. He lost his grip on the rope and that is when his pack came tumbling down the mountain. It was the sleeves of his coat, which was tied to his pack, that appeared to be arms flailing as the pack rolled down the mountainside. We both began to giggle, astonished that all of this had unfolded and yet the ram was still bedded a mere 100 yards away. After composing ourselves, we wondered if the ram was deaf or dumb. I had yet to see the ram’s head to determine his size, but we knew it
had to be the ram we had spotted from the bedroom window. I told Logan the ram would eventually get up and turn around and bed back down, as rams always do. But another hour or two passed and the ram hadn’t even twitched. Logan said, “Maybe he’s dead.” That started us giggling again. I told him to be ready for a shot as I was going to try to slip out and get a look at the ram. I scooted across the ground until I could finally see one side of the ram’s horns. His head was up so he was definitely alive. I crawled back to Logan and told him the ram’s horns were fairly long and flared out, but they weren’t real heavy, so the choice was his. He replied, “Dad, we might be able to go and find a bigger ram somewhere else, but we could never top the story behind this one! I always wanted to shoot one where I could look out of my window and see the mountain where I shot my ram, but I never figured we’d actually SPOT the ram from my bedroom window!” Finally the ram stood and turned and bedded back down, never offering a shot. Logan could now see the ram’s head and vitals. He said, “He does flare out nice. I think I’m going to take him.” He settled in for the shot and I told him where to aim the .300 Ultra Mag. At the shot, the ram came tumbling down the mountain toward us and lodged against a boulder. I told Logan to get ready and stay on him. After a few minutes and no movement from the ram, I hugged Logan and told him how proud I was of him. We gathered our gear and began working our way up to the fallen ram. I was ahead of Logan and heard him say something. I turned to ask him what he said and, wide-eyed, he exclaimed, “He’s up!” I turned and couldn’t believe it— there was the ram, stumbling across the rock slide above us. Logan quickly reloaded and took an offhand shot, which finished the ram. After reaching the ram I congratulated Logan and then told him to go to the top of the mountain to see if he could get a cell signal to call my wife, Mariah, and have her bring a vehicle to the road below us. After about an hour, just at dark, I had the ram ready to pack out. I
could see Mariah coming along the road below and flashed my headlamp at her. A short while later she had climbed up to the kill site carrying our two-year-old daughter, helping our four-year-old son, and followed by our other two daughters. All of them clawed their way up the steep mountain to admire the ram and congratulate Logan. Logan and I loaded up our heavy packs. I held the four-year-old’s hand, Mariah carried the two-year-old, and with the other two in tow we headed down the mountain to the truck waiting below. One more trip up and down the mountain, and we were done. Logan was so proud of his ram, and during the course of both hunts he had also taken several very nice photos, including one that appeared on the cover of Sports Afield ’s January/February issue. The next day we took the rams to check them in and get the horns plugged. The whole family went along and the Idaho Fish and Game biologist, Jamie, included the kids in the process, explaining what she was doing and why, and the various things they were testing for. This was truly a family sheep hunt and one that will stand out among my most special hunting adventures. Logan was proud of his ram, but it wasn’t long before he asked me, “Dad, can I start putting in for the draw in other states?” And thus another sheephunting addict is born. About the author: James Reed grew up in the Midwest, farming and working at his family owned farm implement dealership and hunting whitetails whenever possible. James moved west to the mountains of Idaho in search of more hunting opportunities and the solitude of the Rockies. In 2008 James brought his many years of hunting, guiding and sales experience to Sports Afield when he joined the team. James is now the Director of Sales of Sports Afield and Sports Afield Trophy Properties. As anyone who knows James can attest, hunting is not just his job-it is a huge part of his life. James lives in the mountains of Idaho with his wife and five of his children, all of whom hunt, fish and embrace the outdoor lifestyle.

WYOMING
The Untamed Spirit of the West Written by: Jenna Boltz
Wyoming became our nation’s 44th state in 1890, and the northwestern portion of the state remains one of the most wonderous places in America. With the mix of brightly colored hot pots and the deep canyons of Yellowstone, rich history of the Big Horn Mountains, and the jagged, majestic Grand Tetons Mountains, some adventurers even call this expanse “otherworldly”.
W
yoming has so many public lands it can be challenging to navigate. Yellowstone National Park, Bighorn National Forest, and the Bridger Teton National Forest provide some of the most beautiful vistas in the West. The U.S. Congress made Yellowstone America’s first national park in 1872. In the years that followed and with the creation of several more national parks and monuments, environmentalists across the country lobbied for wilderness preservation throughout the American West. 44 years later, President Woodrow Wilson consolidated the management of these parks by establishing the National Park Service. The National Park Service currently manages 84 million acres across all U.S. states, and this has served as a model for countries around the world. American novelist and historian, Wallace Stagner, once said, “National parks are the best idea we ever had. Absolutely American, absolutely democratic, they reflect us at our best rather than our worst.” Located in north-central Wyoming, the Bighorn Mountains are a sister range of the Rocky Mountains. The Bighorn National Forest is among the oldest of the National Forests. It is named for the Bighorn River, which is contributed to by streams on the west side of the Forest. During the 1800s, the region provided tipi poles, lumber for nearby Fort Phil Kearny, beaver pelts, medicinal plants, and abundant big game. Several hundred beautiful lakes cover the landscape and drain into miles
of streams. The Big Horn Basin is home to ancient migrations of wildlife and Native Americans, with historic sites like the Medicine Wheel, Legend Rocks, and Yellowstone Lake. The Big Horn Medicine Wheel is a sacred site to people of many nations. Although the Wheel was built high above the Bighorn Basin, and the climb up from the basin takes effort, a wide and ancient trail takes adventurers directly to the Wheel. Today The Big Horn National Forest continues to provide recreational opportunities, lumber, summer grazing for cattle and sheep, and clear, cool water. Yellowstone National Park is the flagship of the National Park Service and a favorite to millions of visitors each year. The park sits on top of a dormant volcano and is home to more geysers and hot springs than any other place on earth. From Yellowstone Grand Canyon to wildlife like America’s largest buffalo herd, grizzly bears, and wolves, it is no wonder adventure seekers flock to this area in search of a taste of the untamed spirit
of the West. The ground at Yellowstone National Park appears to be on fire with approximately 50 percent of the world’s hydrothermal features, including Old Faithful, one of the most popular and recognized natural wonders in the United States. Visitors revel in the thousands of miles of trails from day hikes to backcountry expeditions. Few landscapes in the world are as memorable as the Grand Teton National Park, where you can explore over two hundred miles of trails, float the Snake River, and enjoy the serenity of this remarkable place. The park also has a rich cultural history dating back for millennia. The earliest evidence of humans includes tipi rings, fire pits and stone tools left behind at least 11,000 years ago as glaciers receded. Summertime brought Indian tribes in to harvest berries, fish the clear waters, and hunt abundant wildlife. Indigenous people generally followed migrating animals out of the valley in the harsh winter months in search of milder weather. Beside an abundance of food,

people also came to the Tetons for wealth. Mountain men trekked west in search of desirable beaver fur in the early 1800s. Many trappers, including David Edward (Davey) Jackson, posted up here to capitalize on the land’s bounty. Today we know this area as Jackson Hole. This name came from William Sublette, Jackson’s trapping partner who called it “Davey Jackson’s Hole”. Fashions changed from fur to silk hats and beaver populations declined due to over trapping, so the trapping era faded away to more forward-thinking settlers like John D. Rockefeller. Rockefeller toured the land with Yellowstone’s Superintendent, Horace Albright. Naturally enamored by the mountains’ majestic beauty, Rockefeller bought 35,000 acres with plans to donate the land to the federal government to be part of Grand Teton National Park. In 1950, Congress combined the original
park and the Rockefeller lands to establish present-day Grand Teton National Park. Powell, Wyoming is often considered the basecamp for Yellowstone, The Grand Tetons, and The Big Horn National Forest. Situated in the Big Horn Basin, next to Yellowstone National Park’s East Gate in Park County, Powell is surrounded by public lands in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. The vast amount of public lands and breathtaking scenery attract a wide variety of artisans: artists, photographers, crafters, potters, and blacksmiths. The town was a part of the Shoshone Project, a federal Reclamation Project in 1904 to bring irrigation to the region and expand productive farmland westward; it remains an agriculture town with endless adventure. Cody, Wyoming — founded by the famous William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody — is a quick 25

minutes, southwest of Powell and is one of the last frontiers settled in the lower 48 states. Buffalo Bill was a successful scout for General George Custer before Custer’s Last Stand, where Native Americans defeated US Forces on what is now the Crow Reservation in Southern Montana. Buffalo Bill was not just a knowledgeable guide and soldier; he was a showman. He performed tales of his Wild West adventures on the center stage through his Buffalo Bill’s Wild West shows starting in 1883. He saw the need to preserve a part of what was soon to become civilized, and he recognized the fascination the public had for rodeo events. Since then, Cody has been deemed the “Rodeo Capital of the World” with the Cody Nite Rodeo being the longest running and the only nightly rodeo in the world. Thanks to the preservation and appreciation for its colorful past, Northwestern Wyoming embraces its history as a vibrant part of the present. It is surrounded by mountains on all sides with four-seasons of epic recreation for all kinds of outdoorsmen. Mountain trails keep hikers, bikers, horsemen, and cross-country skiers coming back for more. Crystal clear rivers and lakes provide blueribbon fishing and a worldclass playground for paddling, kayaking, and canoeing. Avid hunters, powder skiers and adventurers revel here, so the question is not what is there to do, but rather what equipment are you going to need.

Ambergris Caye, Belize is famous for fly fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving, and a variety of water sports, but the attractions of this Caribbean jewel don’t stop at the water’s edge – there are plenty of activities and venues to excite even the most jaded sun seeker. Some 25 miles long by one mile wide, Ambergris Caye is the largest of the nearly 200 islands arranged along Belize’s tropical coastline and spectacular reef system, the second largest in the world. Proximity to the reef, which lies less than a half mile offshore, makes it easy to explore this pristine paradise by snorkel, scuba or hire and charter boats. San Pedro Town has grown over the years, but still retains its seaside charm and slow tropical ambience. The popular Creole dish of rice and beans with fish or stewed chicken remains popular, but visitors now also have European, Cajun, Indian, Chinese, and Jamaican and even Thai dishes to choose from. Seafood is fresh and abundant, with daily catches of fresh snapper, grouper, conch and lobster making their way to the tables. The island’s restaurants, bars, clubs and hotels are varied and all within sandy walking distance, and while cars are not permitted on this Caribbean paradise, golf carts, the main form of island transportation, are available for rent. Clearwater Belize is a great opportunity to own a condo in paradise for your recreation, retirement, and rental income when you are not here.
