FLY FISHING THE BITTERROOT A River of Change and Challenge By Justin Karnopp The banks of the Bitterroot River are a good place to ponder. In the shadow of the namesake snow-capped peaks, the mind is free to wander, like the deer, elk,

moose, bears and raptors that thrive in mixed forests of poplars and pine. The river itself is a mesmerizing jewel, the flow a rich tapestry of emerald and garnet. Perfectly camouflaged within this medium are the river’s primary attractions, wild brown and rainbow trout, introduced to Montana’s rivers in the 19th century, and bull and Westslope cutthroat trout, native to these waters since time immemorial. Artists and anglers find inspiration here, and for those with a propensity for both, images of feathers, fur, and foam begin to take shape in the easel of the imagination. The impetus for some of the most effective dry fly patterns ever developed, relied upon by fly fishers the world-over, can be traced back to a moment on the Bitterroot, when a fish posed a problem and an angler/artist set out to solve it. And the problems posed by this hallowed trout river are many. The Bitterroot is highly schizophrenic, more so than any other freestone (undammed) trout river I have fished. For 15 years, this

stream has consistently flummoxed me as both a guide and angler. One minute, the trout are freely rising to my dry fly, and the next, there is no sign that a fish even resides here. I hypothesize that the river’s inconsistency is partly due to the presence of the towering Bitterroot Mountains themselves. This range reaches for the 10,000-foot mark and forms a barrier to storm fronts rolling in from the Pacific Ocean, 1000 miles to the west. Eventually, the saturated clouds unleash enough precipitation in the Idaho wilderness to rise up and crest the Bitterroot Range. A pleasant afternoon can quickly turn sour, with rain, snow and especially wind, the bane of all fly anglers, rushing down the slope of the mountains. These events cause drastic changes in the barometric pressure. Fish maintain equilibrium in the aquatic environment via an internal air bladder,

which acts as a sort of ballast. Fluctuations in the barometer interfere with this system and disrupt their feeding behavior. Every May, the snowpack on both the gentle Sapphire Range to the east and the imposing Bitterroot Mountains to the west, succumb to the long-awaited arrival of spring. The meandering flows of the river balloon into a raging torrent. Hardwoods fall first, and on particularly severe events, mature pine trees end up in the riverbed. By late June, the surge of runoff is well on its way downriver, the river resumes its meandering course, but the chaos of runoff has left its mark. An influx of woody debris creates essential trout habitat, affording shady haunts for fish to find respite from current and predators, but can spell trouble for boaters and anglers. Side channels change and “sweepers”, fallen logs that can trap a raft, drift boat, or inner tube, are extremely dangerous. The river is never the same after runoff, and requires careful exploration, scouting, and gathering of local intel from fly shops, guides, and Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks. The Bitterroot is several separate streams rolled into one 84-mile long conundrum. The upper river, above the hamlet of Hamilton, is a rather turbulent system featuring a rocky substrate. This habitat is ideally suited to native Westlope Cutthroat, rainbows, and Cuttbows (hybrids between the two subspecies). These fish, the cutthroat in particular, tend to be easier to dupe on an artificial fly than brown trout.

Why? I have no idea, but the upper river, in general, is a better destination for those anglers still working out the kinks in their fly fishing abilities. The lower river, from Victor down to the confluence with the Clark Fork in the bustling college city of Missoula, is a good place to hone the finer points of fly presentation and the many athletic nuances involved in the sport of fly fishing. The river gains volume via multiple tributaries, flushing glacial till into the substrate and adding more fallen timber. The alluvial plain is wider on the lower river and coupled with the south-north orientation, the Bitterroot tends to flow warmer in the summer months, giving the edge to the hardier brown trout. Suspicious browns, some of them near the magical two-foot mark in length, prowl the flats around Stevensville and carefully inspect their meals before committing to eat. The lower river is also home to northern pike, and fishing for these introduced

predators is a retreat from persnickety trout. While most fly anglers tend to release the river’s trout, pike are often removed from the system and wind up in beer batter. While some anglers prefer to probe the Bitterroot’s deep lies with nymphs or streamers, throughout its course, the river is largely considered in terms of the dry fly presentation. The bulk of the thousands of anglers that make the pilgrimage each year come for one of the famed insect emergences that bring the fish to the surface. The first such event occurs in March/April, when the Skwala stonefly and March Brown mayfly hatches coincide. Postrunoff, in June/July, expect a top water smorgasbord with caddisflies, mayflies, stoneflies, and ants/beetles on the menu. In September/October grasshoppers find their way into the drink and on cool, fall days, the mayfly hatches can be outstanding. Thanks to Montana’s stream access law, anglers can find numerous places to enter the river and spend the day wade fishing. For those with a boat, a dozen public boat launches line the main river between Hannon Memorial Bridge and the town of Lolo. Hiring a local, professional guide can greatly flatten the learning curve. A 9-foot 5 or 6 weight is the most common fly rod on the Bitterroot, but the most important implements that a fly angler can bring to the water is a good selection of locally designed fly patterns…and a heavy dose of humility. Many times, I have been on the river when no fish were rising, only to discover that one of my friends, floating a few miles upstream, encountered a dry fly event and enjoyed exceptional fishing. Unpredictability is the Bitterroot River’s curse and charm, and the river and the trout excel at the game of hard to get. About the author: A longtime guide, writer and fly tyer, Justin Karnopp is the father of two, Sawyer (7) and Odessa (4), and the Principal of CD Fishing USA (www.cd-fishing.us), the North American Distributor for Composite Development Fly Rods. Justin and his wife, Lauren, produce a fly fishing podcast (www.thefebruaryroom.com) from their Missoula home. Find more of Justin’s work at www.justinkarnopp.com

Lewis and Clark explored this vast wilderness in the early 1800’s, and more than two centuries later, there is still a lot to discover in Montana. Adventure seekers enjoy hundreds of miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, ATVing and skiing. More than 3,200 crystal clear lakes are dispersed across this northern wonderland, perfect for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, fishing and boating. Montana is home to the largest elk herd in the U.S. as well as mass populations of bison, bears, and bald eagles. With an awe-inspiring landscape, the Treasure State is The Last Best Place for you to Stake Your Claim®. All of Montana is a recreational mecca, and where you choose to live simply depends on your style.

FINDING YOUR HOME ON THE RIVER By Eric Johnson Finding the perfect home out on the range can be tough. In one area there are too many houses available, in another there aren’t any. This house is too “in” town and that house is too “outta” town. This one is too far from relatives or that one is too close. Maybe the yard isn’t big enough or it’s too big. Perhaps the house needs improvements or perhaps it really needs improvements. And, of course, the house is either too expensive or… as the bank says, “it’s way too expensive.” Fortunately, finding a home river is much easier. It’ll be the one with flowing water in it, wherever you find it.

The confluence of huge swaths of public land and free-flowing rivers in the West have created a unique recreation opportunity: a chance to launch a boat on a river, sleep along the river, wake up along the river, and repeat—for days, in some cases weeks, on end. Rafting trips are unique among wilderness travel. A raft can easily take you, your gear and your kitchen sink into the most inaccessible wilderness. So, even when you find yourself far from home, you are not far from the comforts of home. For the last 10 years, I’ve hauled my friends and family around the west running rivers. These rivers and river corridors have become like a second home to me. So, to extend the metaphor, let me show you around my rafting home away from home.

Let’s start with the entryway, which in rafting terms is the drive to the launch and the put-in. Just like with any entryway it can be muddy. We like to say that class III rivers often begin at the end of class V roads. As for the put in--This is where everybody rigs their boats for launch. It’s gonna be crowded, strewn with gear and there will likely be only one hard used ½ bath. Next, onto the living room. Here we have multiple flooring options. There is the water option. We float on top of it, play in it, fish in it, and swim in it (both on purpose and by accident see rig to flip and dress to swim recommendations). Other options are sandy beaches, or rocky trails. As for wall options, the only option is canyon walls, which is just as well because they are beautiful and they go with everything.

The kitchen is great. It truly is one of the best parts of rafting. Most likely it will be an open air kitchen with an amazing view. Occasionally, we string a tarp overhead if it is raining or the sun is beating down. A rotating cast of friends and family cook delicious meals in the kitchen. After cocktail hour down at the boat, we enjoy appetizers, a hearty meal and likely a dutch oven dessert. The dining room has ample and comfortable seating for everybody. It also has a fireplace, which is a nice touch when the sun goes down behind the canyon walls. From where they sit around the circle, everybody is able to see everybody else. This open concept inspires stories and laughter for hours. After the conversations die down and people start drifting off to bed, I like to listen to the sound system; it’s surround sound and it features river sounds, coyotes howling, bird calls, with zero beeping or buzzing noises to interfere. While it’s only a one-bedroom abode, there are a couple of sleeping options. Some people like to set up a tent up on the riverbank; I like to sleep down on the raft under the stars. On a river, the thermostat isn’t adjustable. But there are a few tricks: on hot nights the temperature is usually 10 degrees cooler on the river and on cold nights, a hot water bottle in my sleeping bag makes things cozy. The bathroom, ah yes, the bathroom. In rafting the bathroom is called “The Groover” because when people started practicing Leave No Trace on river trips, they used a military issue rocket box as the toilet. This left a rectangular groove in your butt. Fortunately, toilet systems have

evolved. The modern groover is much more comfortable. Groover placement is an art. There are two criteria for proper groover placement: privacy, and scenery. Coffee cup in hand, morning sun kissing the canyon walls, river flowing by, I find that things move along nicely under these conditions. Finally, the backyard. The backyard is perfect for kids, dogs, and big kids. It has lots of room and, occasionally, a great (all natural) hot tub. I hope you enjoyed a tour of my second home. And remember a home river isn’t necessarily one that flows right by your house. A home river is one that flows through your heart. You’ll know it when you find it. Good luck!

About the author: Eric Johnson is a high school English teacher from Sturgis, South Dakota, which happens to be a place with very little navigable whitewater. Come summer vacation, he drags his family to the mountain west where they always seem to find…a river. Coincidentally, of course, they always have the raft and the kayaks packed too. Eric is also a contributing writer for NRS and Cascade River Gear.

Salmon River Rams SATP ARTICLE

I

first became obsessed with bighorn sheep when I was a young boy. Every year my family would pack up our camper and head west from our Iowa home to the Rocky Mountains for a vacation. When I was about ten years old we found ourselves in Yellowstone, hiking up to the summit of Mount Washburn. I was ahead of the rest of my family, trucking up the hill. A noise caught my attention, and I lifted my head and a few yards away stood a mature bighorn ram. I ran down the mountain and yelled, “Dad! Dad! Bighorn sheep! Thousands of them!” I dragged my dad up the mountain to the rise and there stood, well, not thousands, but three bighorn rams. I was hooked. After moving to Idaho in my late twenties I began putting in for bighorn sheep draws in several states, only to en-

dure nineteen years of “sorry” letters. I was preparing to put in for the Idaho draw in 2016 when my fourteen-year-old son, Logan, said, “Dad, I want to put in for sheep this year.” I decided to put us in together for the draw, figuring maybe Logan’s new blood would buoy my chances. Still, there are only four tags available in the unit I put us in for, and I knew the odds of being drawn for two of them were very slim. A couple of months later I received a message from one of my friends that he had drawn an Idaho mountain goat tag. I congratulated him and then remembered the sheep draw. I punched in my number on the Fish and Game website, closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and hit “enter.” I slowly opened my eyes and was met with “Congratulations!” I was in disbe-

lief. I punched in Logan’s number and saw, “Congratulations!” It was unbelievable—we had both drawn once-in-a-lifetime bighorn sheep tags! Since the unit was right by our house in Idaho’s Salmon River country, Logan and I began taking the entire family on our evening scouting trips. I felt fortunate to share this experience with my family, but scouting with a two-, four-, six-, and eight-year-old in tow does have its challenges. We had a ball, though, and having the younger kids bugging me throughout the day—“Dad, is it time to go sheep scouting yet?”—warmed my hunter’s heart. I also asked my rancher neighbors to keep their eyes out for rams. My friend and neighbor Preston Cutler told me a spot to check, and the next night we headed out. I unloaded my crew of young sheep scouts and began to glass. I had barely put up my bino when I spotted six rams. I set up the spotting scope and could see there were two small rams, three medium rams, and one that dwarfed the others in both body size and horn. We watched, took pictures, and filmed them until we started running out of light. Every night for a week we went back, but we never saw the rams again. I decided we should try the other side of the mountain. After getting to the top of the mountain I got the kids situated and began glassing. Nothing. I glassed for over an hour and

we were just getting ready to head out when something caught my eye. I put the scope on it, and sure as heck it was a ram. I soon found the other five. The big ram was still with the band and I got a better look at him. Definitely a shooter, and three other rams in the band were as well, though they were not of the big ram’s caliber. I scouted other areas but didn’t find anything of interest. On one scouting trip about three weeks before the season, on my own and several miles back in the middle of nowhere, I wrecked my motorcycle on a wet log in a rainstorm and wrenched my knee. I thought I had broken my leg at first, but after gathering myself soon realized it was my knee and that I could put no weight on it. I struggled to get the bike upright and carefully made my way out to my truck. My hunt was in peril and I began to think about how I could get Logan on the rams without me. I even wondered if I could get permission to forego my tag until next year. Twenty years of trying to draw, and now this. No way. I bought a knee brace and decided I would have to tough my way through it. Four days before the season opener, Logan and I packed in to our camp at 9,500 feet and about a mile from where I had last seen the rams. The next day we set out to find them, in hopes of keeping an eye on them until opening morning. After setting up in a nice spot and glassing for a couple of hours, we heard a commotion below us and saw the rams disappearing into the

small timber in the head of the drainage. I feared we had blown it. I hoped they had only caught a bit of our wind in the fickle mountain drafts. After a tense while we started spotting bits and pieces of the rams feeding on the far side of the trees. The big ram appeared and led them out into a shale slide where he began scraping out a bed. Eventually seven rams worked their way out to the slide and bedded down for the afternoon. We watched them for about five hours as they slept, fed in a small opening with scattered trees, and bedded down again. It was a real treat to enjoy the day with my son in the presence of such majestic creatures high in the mountains. As long as they stayed here, we had an ideal plan for opening morning. Then all hell broke loose. Rams came busting out of the trees in full panic-flight mode. Down the shale they ran, into the bottom of the drainage, and they were gone. I told Logan I didn’t know what happened, but I guessed that one of them had run into a mountain lion, for we knew no other humans were anywhere near. Dejected, we headed back to camp. Once in camp we started thinking about what to do. We decided to take the chance that they had only moved one canyon over, and decided to glass not far from camp the next morning. Up at daylight, we headed to a small island of about five trees looking across into the drainage where the kids and I had spotted the rams a couple of weeks prior. We got comfortable and started glassing as soon as it was light. Logan spotted the rams first in the shale slide across from us. We watched the rams from this spot for twelve hours that day, never leaving the shade of our tree island. I was thrilled and proud to see the patience and maturity Logan showed on this long day. One thing of note was that one of the smaller rams was missing, which seemed to lend credence to my mountain lion theory. Tomorrow was the opener and we had them in the perfect spot. We glassed until we could sneak out in the dark and headed back to camp to prepare for opening morning. I gave Logan first pick of the rams and he chose a wide three-quarter-curl

ram. I chose the big, over-full-curl ram, the leader and king of this band. There was another full curl ram that was pretty but thin-horned, and another that was almost a twin to Logan’s ram, and three smaller rams. Now if our plan would only work! We were up well before daylight on opening day, excited to be sheep hunting. We moved into our spotter’s nest from the previous day and waited for it to get light enough to see. We soon spotted the rams on the same shale slide where we had left them, but they were higher than they had been the night before. All good so far. Now if they just would move down the slide, we could easily move into a shooting position. As we watched, they instead moved up over the top and back into the drainage they had run from two days before. Logan and I packed up and headed across a large saddle and across the shale slide to where the rams had crossed. We moved to where we had tree cover and crept over the ridge edge. Nothing. Not a ram in sight. Slowly we sneaked down the ridge to try to find a place to glass from. Then we heard shale sliding, and froze. Down the ridge to our left were the rams, digging in the shale, just 200 yards away! Slowly we crouched and scooted to a bit of cover and a shooting position. I slid up to a downed log and Logan was to my left. The ram I had chosen was perfectly broadside and in the clear, but the ram Logan had chosen was still obscured by brush. We had decided if the opportunity occurred for both of us to take our rams, we would count to three and both shoot. This would be easier said

than done, however, especially with the pressure and excitement of a once-in-alifetime ram in the cross hairs. We waited and waited for an opportunity at both rams until they fed down the slide and out of sight. Had we just blown the only chance we would have at these rams? Should one of us have taken the shot? We stayed put in our position for hours, hoping the rams would return. The sun was beating down on us, cooking us where we sat, with no shade available. A few hours into our sit, a small ram appeared in the clearing directly below us. Anxiety was at a high again as we got into position, hoping the big rams would follow the smaller ram out into the open. Another small ram appeared, and then they disappeared and the wait was on again. The wind was swirling toward where we thought the rams were bedded. We debated whether to move down the ridge or get out of the drainage completely to keep from spooking the rams. Eventually Logan stood and crawled up on a log to stretch and instantly exclaimed, “There they are!” The rams were working back toward us across the same slide where we had found them then lost them earlier. We got into position again and they disappeared into a narrow band of timber where we should be able to see their movement in any direction. Nothing. Another few hours passed and with the fickle winds we decided to move to keep from spooking the rams. Just as we stood, we spotted them again in the same shale slide but this time feeding back up toward where we had missed our opportunity nine hours prior.

A stunning view of the mountains in Idaho’s Salmon River country.

The ram Logan had chosen was feeding broadside in a clearing but my ram was behind a rise with only his horns visible above the rise. This began a frustrating game of peek-a-boo which went on for half an hour. One ram would present a shot but the other would be obscured, then vice versa. I had known that pulling off a double would be difficult, but this was almost more than we could bear. The rams split, with four going high on a course that would bring them out into the shale in the open, and our two rams coming over the small rise and feeding directly toward us. Our emotions were on a roller-coaster ride as we had to watch both groups of rams and hope the wind wouldn’t betray us. Our two rams continued to feed toward us, head on, neither offering a shot, now at thirty yards and closing. They stopped just before the trees directly below us. I had the cross hairs on my ram, directly between his shoulders. But Logan had no shot at his ram. This was it. Another few moments and we would be spotted at close range by these rams and blow them clear out of the country. Suddenly Logan whispered, “Dad, the pretty full-curl ram is broadside. He’s beautiful. I am going to take him if you have a shot on your ram.” I asked if he was ready and he nodded yes. I whispered, “One . . . two . . . three.” The mountain exploded with the report of two rifles as one. My ram dropped in his tracks and began rolling down the

shale slope. I instantly turned to Logan and asked what happened. He said, “I’m not sure. He ran straight down the slope.” We gathered up and moved just a bit to where I could see my ram piled up against the only boulder on the shale slide—he was down for sure. We headed over to where Logan’s ram had been standing. Nothing. I began looking for hair and blood to confirm any sign of a hit and sent Logan down to follow the obvious tracks on the shale. Now I was feeling an odd mix of elation and worry. Logan reappeared and said, “Nothing. I missed.” My heart sank. What should have been a moment of complete euphoria—a crescendo and the culmination of a challenging day—now turned to guilt. I was thrilled to have cleanly taken my ram but at the same time overcome with sorrow that Logan didn’t get his. Then Logan said, “You know, Dad, I’m actually glad it worked out this way. I would have loved to have gotten that ram but at least it was a clean miss and I got to share the experience of you getting your ram, and plus now our hunt isn’t over, which means we get to spend more time together on the mountain like this.” I’ve never been more proud of my son than at that moment. I gave him a big hug and tears welled up in my eyes. I was so proud of his maturity and his respect for the animal and the hunt, and thrilled that he still relished time spent with his

father. We headed down the slope to check out the fallen king. Upon reaching my ram, we were both wearing ear-to-ear grins. I put my hands on the magnificent horns and thanked the ram for giving his life. I have judged many sheep in my life, but I had misjudged this ram. Knowing most of the rams in this unit averaged 14- to 14½- inch bases, I had guessed he would score in the low to mid170s. But as I ran my hands over this warrior’s battle gear and counted the growth rings on the over-full-curl horns, I knew I had underestimated him. He was truly an exceptional ram and befitting a once-in-alifetime tag. He was nine years old, with a Roman nose and scars from years of hardfought battles. We sat, absorbing the moment. The mountains were silent now and almost reverent. We snapped pictures, and as the light was fading from the sky I told Logan to prepare for a long night on the mountain. We were both nearly out of water and dehydrated from the long sit in the unrelenting sun during our ten-hour wait. As I dressed the ram, Logan gathered wood for a fire and scouted out a flat spot to camp for the night. He found a nice little bowl about fifty yards above us, which would provide shelter from the wind and be a safe spot to have a fire all night in the shale, and most important, keep us from rolling down the mountain while we slept. I finished with the ram about midnight, laid the meat out on the big boulder, and spread the life-size hide out on a fallen tree to cool. Logan had a fire going and we had intended to cook some sheep loins over it, but we were both too exhausted and dehydrated to eat. Logan was soon asleep and I simply lay there looking up at the stars, enjoying the moment and time on the mountain. I looked at my son, who, I thought, had transformed into a man on this hunt. I looked at the magnificent ram’s horns, dimly lit by the flickering firelight. I looked at my old friend Orion in the clear night sky, and thanked him for being there on another great hunt. I knew I was in for a long, chilly, uncomfortable night, but as a tear ran down my cheek, I knew in truth the night wouldn’t last long enough. Then it occurred to me: We still had another sheep tag to fill.

Idaho

Idaho’s brilliant scenery includes 18 ski resorts with epic backcountry terrain, making this gorgeous sector your new favorite powder playground. Residents enjoy the many features here, particularly the 3,100 miles of winding rivers, more than any other state. Shoshone Falls, aptly nicknamed the Niagara of the West, boasts a drop that is 45 feet farther than the real Niagara Falls. Idaho’s combined wilderness spans over 4.7 million acres, and at 7,900 feet, Hells Canyon is the deepest gorge in the United States, even deeper than the Grand Canyon. With so many scenic treasures, Idaho can easily be considered the hidden gem of the west.

Wyoming The land of wide-open spaces and rough-and-tumble lifestyle is calling you. Like Clearwater Properties’ other featured locations, Wyoming is yet another example of an outdoor recreation lover’s utopia. Besides the obvious tourist attraction that is Yellowstone National Park, visitors from around the world come to experience Wyoming’s rich history. Famous outlaws like Butch Cassidy hid out in its small towns between train robberies, and much of the untouched landscape remains reminiscent of the Wild West. Unrivaled hunting, fishing and wildlife viewing are around every corner. Today, Wyoming has the smallest population of all the states, with just over 550,000 residents, making them socialdistancing champions.

We welcome you to our newest office! Stop by, say hello and get to know our agents, Jim and Ken, at 1349 Sheridan Avenue in historic Cody, Wyoming.

RODEO It’s a Western Thing -

For many that reside throughout our beautiful Western landscapes, the Rodeo is a true American celebration of simpler times. It is a worldwide sport with countless associations in the U.S. alone and has emerged from history as a legendary event and way of life. From the spectacularly large belt buckles to the deafening crowds, there is nothing like a Western rodeo! Starting in the 1880s, various Wild West shows featured “cowboy tournaments” around the United States, associating the open-range practices with sporting performance. Back then, the vast countryside was run by ranchers, but the word “rodeo” was never an Americanized term. In fact, it comes from the Spanish word, meaning “to surround.” The practices of ranching stem from these early days in Spain and Portugal: herding, round-ups, cattle drives, and branding. Today, the rodeo remains a world-wide sport, popular in the USA, Australia, throughout Latin America and in the Philippines. American rodeos naturally derived from our cowboys’ standard workday. They evolved from a time when cowboys would gather at the end of cattle-driving trails and have a little friendly competition to see who the best bucking-horse rider or roper was. These contests then became regular forms of entertainment. Today’s professional rodeo cowboy is a bit different from his predecessor from the 1800s, although the traditional ideals of sportsmanship and showmanship are still valued by today’s competitors. According to the Pro Rodeo Cowboy’s Association (PRCA), “a cowboy’s standing in the sport of rodeo still depends on his skill with a rope or his ability to ride a bucking animal, his toughness in the face of setbacks, and his gratitude and humility about the success he achieves.” His standing in the rodeo community still depends on his adherence to the cowboy code, which says “a man helps his fellow competitors even when they are competing for the

same paycheck – many cowboys loan horses and equipment to even their closest competitors – and teach what they know to younger cowboys.” Typical rodeo events include, bareback-bronc riding, calf roping, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, team roping, barrel racing, bull riding and steer roping. So whether it’s the boots and chaps, majestic beasts, or impressive athleticism, folks continue to enjoy the thrill of witnessing horse and cowboy teamwork, challenging, daring feats, and tests of true grit required to tame the wild west. Some of our favorite western rodeos include the Bigfork Summer Rodeo, Upper Yellowstone Roundup, Gem State Stampede Barrel Series in Kootenai County, ID, and of course the Cody Stampede Rodeo. Cody, Wyoming claims to be the “Rodeo Capital of the World”, beginning over one hundred years ago with William Frederick “Buffalo Bill” Cody, and his Wild West Show. Buffalo Bill quickly saw the need to preserve a part of what was soon to become civilized, and he recognized the fascination the public had for this spectator sport. The Cody Nite Rodeo is the longest running and the only nightly rodeo (June-August) in the world. Get in on the action at one of these events happening with the best cowboys around!
