PARENTS' CORNER
The Art of Mastery
Kamilla Kirpalani Founder and Academic Director Maria Montessori Teacher Training Center Little Explorers Montessori Plus School
Most parents I know are highly invested in their children. Their love drives them daily to avail their little ones of the best resources, attention, opportunities and guidance that they can afford. Our children are born with their own interests and talents; we may lead them toward a varied set of experiences, but how they interact with the material will always be unique to who they are. That is one of the things that makes people so interesting. Each one of us is unique, when we finally find our true calling, then the fun begins.
2. Allow for many mistakes Think back to skills or information you are most confident of. Did you get it right the first time? Learning takes a whole lot of mistakes and experiments. Often children are chastised too soon, deterring them from persevering. A simpler method would be to demonstrate again and again and then allow for action-based learning. 3. Allow time
That said, there are a few things we as parents can do to help them find that calling and in it the satisfaction of harnessing their talents.
In this fast-paced world we live in there is not enough time to experiment and explore concepts at the pace in which children learn. It is necessary that uninterrupted time is allowed for the absorption of each new topic.
1. Allow a clear example
4. Allow mentorship
Often children are held back at the demonstration phase, the instructor dominates the experience and therefore learning remains at a very basic stage. If our children are to truly learn, we must allow them to get stuck in.
There is a reason why we learnt so much from our siblings about life and how to live it; simply put, children teach children with an
8 | Dec 18- Jan 19 ENJOY No 135
attitude they can understand. Should we not use this approach with all new concepts? Once a few colleagues or peers have mastered a skill, they might welcome the opportunity to share it. 5. Allow for access It is confirmed that humans learn best in a hands-on fashion. Trying a concrete version of a concept or a life application of any subject is the best way to absorb new concepts. Book learning is the abstract form that can follow once the concrete real life application has been absorbed. 6. Allow for calm contentment It is rare for anyone to truly learn in situations of fear, anxiety and pressure. It is clear that people learn quickest when they are enjoying the experience. Let’s be weary of stressors and try to eliminate as many as possible to encourage true skill growth in our children. The mastery of any subject brings with it joy and true passion. Who knows down which path that passion will take our children? e

INFLUENCERS: MAKING MONEY BY COLLABORATING WITH BRANDS
A
ccording to a study conducted by the American marketing agency MEDIAKIX, the market of influencers could reach 10 billion dollars by 2020. Fashion, luxury and beauty brands all have the same concern: capturing young targets with the aim to make of them recurring customers in the long term. To that end, they think they have found the martingale on the Internet: product and sponsored content placement, in a more or less transparent manner.
22 | Dec 18- Jan 19 ENJOY No 135
Of course, the number of people spotted on social networks with which brands sign contracts has exploded, and in all sectors. So much so that some of those influencers have found a niche, with some of them earning up to several tens of thousands of euros a year. For Michael Jais, Managing Director of Launchmetrics, a company that offers brands a software capable of defining the value of a publication on Instagram or a Like on Twitter, there are three categories of influencers for fashion, luxury and beauty brands:
Micro-influencers — from 20,000 subscribers. At this level, you may not necessarily be eligible for compensation. It is rather a product exchange such as wearing a garment or participating in an exclusive event. It seems brands do this often for a more commercial purpose by leveraging on proximity. Macro-influencers — more than 100,000 subscribers. Here, the brand works on its legitimacy with someone very well-known in the sector. It could be the opening of a store for example.
FINANCIAL TIPS Remuneration can reach 25,000 dollars for a complete package with participation, live stories and contents on a blog. Mega-influencers — several million. We refer here to the category of the stars of the net, which have several million subscribers. Using their services can cost up to 100,000 dollars to a brand. "In luxury, trademarks have long been the prerogative of the AB+ socio-professional category. In order to rejuvenate their targets, who cannot always afford their products, they give the influencers an intermediary role: millennials maintain a relationship with the brand through them", says Michael Jais, who explains further that one must consider the afore-mentioned numbers depending on the market and sector.
or photo shoot. Everything does not finds its way into the pocket of a YouTuber or an influencer on Instagram. Now, let me make your mouth water a bit: an Instagram photo can make the bank account of a YouTuber boasting 2 million subscribers swell by 25,000 USD. Ready?
It has been disclosed that in the United States of America, American youth have made product placement on Instagram a new summer job, earning a few tens and hundreds of dollars per sponsored post, for example with American Apparel. We must however make sure we don’t just apply here in Ghana and in Africa what obtains in the USA, with no consideration to our reality. It is important to dissociate Ghana from the United States, where the practice is more widespread. And it also depends on the products and especially the type of contracts. When we talk about 100,000 dollars, that amount usually corresponds to the overall budget, including agency costs and the film crew in case of video
FINANCIAL TERM OF THE MONTH: ESCROW Escrow is a legal concept in which a financial instrument or an asset is held by a third party on behalf of two other parties that are in the process of completing a transaction. The funds or assets are held by the escrow agent until it receives the appropriate instructions or until predetermined contractual obligations have been fulfilled. Escrow comes into play when two parties are in the process of completing a transaction and there is uncertainty over whether one party or another will be able to fulfil their obligations.e

Cervical Cancer Awareness Facts, Figures and Guidance about the Silent Killer
BY DR THEODORA PEPERA
I
n Ghana, over 3000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year, and more than half of those women will die from the disease. For those who survive, they are often left with debilitating conditions.
WHO (World Health Organization) figures suggest that unless steps are taken to address this in the country, the figure for women diagnosed with cervical cancer per year will rise to over 5000 by 2025. Symptoms of cervical cancer include an abnormal vaginal discharge, bleeding in-between menses, bleeding after menopause, bleeding during or after sex, unexplained weight loss.

INTERVIEW
Apart from the cost of treating cervical cancer (surgery/ chemo/ radiotherapy), there is the real human cost to the woman and her relatives. These women are all of US! Mothers, Sisters, Daughters, Nieces and Aunts. The real tragedy is that this is a very preventable cancer, even more so than breast cancer. It is caused by persistent HPV (human papilloma virus) infection. From HPV infection to cancer is approximately 14 years! That is the time we have to diagnose and treat it BEFORE it becomes a cancer. The important take home message is that there are NO SYMPTOMS at the pre-cancer level!! You cannot examine yourself, you must attend for testing. The only way to detect it at the pre-cancer level is by screening, ideally with what is known as a pap smear. Cells are taken with a small brush from the neck/opening of the womb, and sent to the lab for analysis. "Some, more common, lab tests look only for abnormal cells. The better and more recent tests also look for the presence of the type of HPV that have the potential to cause cervical cancer. Any woman who has ever had a sexual encounter, is advised to begin 3 yearly screening, approximately 5 years after this encounter.
A screening test only tells us that you have a risk of having the pre-cancerous cells. For screening to work to prevent cancer, it has to be combined with diagnosis and treatment. Although a pap smear is likely to be normal, it is very important to follow up and ensure you receive your result. If it is abnormal, it is important not to worry, but ask to be referred to a specialist unit for a closer examination, known as a diagnostic colposcopy assessment and treatment if necessary. Unlike treatment for cervical cancer, which is complex, treatment of pre-cancer cells is simple and quick and is usually performed in the clinic with local anaesthetic. EURACARE Advanced Diagnostics & Heart Centre is one of the few facilities that offers the entire scope: screening, diagnosis (colposcopy) and treatment. The writer, Dr Theodora Pepera, is a Consulting Obstetrician and Gynaecologist and Antenatal Specialist with EURACARE Ghana. A Ghanaian National, she is a Fellow of The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, UK. EURACARE is located at 24, Peter Ala Adjetey Ave, North Labone, Accra. Dear Billie, My partner proposed to me five years ago. We’re both in our early 50s – I’m a widow and he’s divorced – so we decided we’d just have a low-key wedding. I now realize that he hasn’t mentioned the wedding for a while and if anything, we’re seeing less of each other. We still live in our own houses, he has his own set of friends, and spends a lot of time going on trips holidaying without me. I’m reluctant to say anything because I don’t want to force him into a corner. My daughter says I am blind and he’s just using me. I really don’t know what to think anymore! Comfort in Adjiringanor Dear Comfort You need to know where you stand. You’re his equal and shouldn’t be worried about upsetting him or frightening him off. Talk to him when you see him next, and if you’ve really had enough, tell him that you’re tired of waiting. You need to know what’s going on. If he’s not actually serious about being your husband and if he only proposed because he felt it was expected, then some much-needed honesty is long overdue. If you’re worried 32 | Dec 18- Jan 19 ENJOY No 135
Dear Billie, My grown-up children don’t make any effort for me anymore. My birthday cards always arrive late, they promise to take me out for meals and weekends away but that never happens. I always give them beautiful presents but all I ever get is bubble bath or a box of chocolates for Christmas. I know they are all busy with families and jobs, but is an occasional weekend visit too much to ask – especially as they never turn down my generosity? Lonely Alice in Tema Dear Alice
about talking to him honestly, then it doesn’t say much about the relationship. If he wants one thing and you want something else entirely, are you absolutely sure that this is the right man for you? And why does your daughter believe he’s using you? Please let us know how you get on. ---------------------------------------
You really do sound lonely and I may add, slightly bitter but expecting your children to be as equally giving of their time and money as you are will only lead to more disappointments. My advice is, please don’t waste any more precious time worrying and waiting on them. Get out there, make new friends and start living. You owe it to yourself to live a rich fulfilling life with people that appreciate you. You can join a book club or take on a sport or even a dance class. When you start going out and show your children that you are fine without them, I guarantee you they will more willingly come around to
ADVICE CORNER visit. Sometimes being overly needy pushes people away, even family. Good luck and let me know how you are. --------------------------------------Dear Billie, I’ve been through a bit of a depression last year but my partner won’t give me a second chance. I’ve been unable to have sex for a while and every time my partner touched me, I pushed her away. I was too wound up and worried to even think about intimacy. She took my rejection personally and accused me of having an affair. I went for therapy and now my mood has lifted. I’ve even changed my job which was the source of my depression and started taking care of myself. I’m ready to be close again, but how do I persuade my partner to stop pushing me away? Desperate Kweku in West Legon Dear Kweku,
Dear Billie, My friend Ama has no manners. She snaps her fingers at waiters and is incredibly rude to taxi drivers. She is getting worse every day and has that sense of entitlement which I find highly irritating. I really dread going out with her. On our annual trip to the UK, she was extremely rude to the hotel staff. I spent the whole-time apologising behind her. She complained about everything, even though we’ve been going there for years. At one point, the manager took me aside and said other guests were making comments. I had to ask her to behave herself and now she is furious with me. What should I do? Annoyed Anita in Cantonments Dear Anita, I suggest you have a serious talk with your friend. Let her
know you are not prepared to go anywhere with her anymore until she learns some manners. If she is inappropriate and if she is not able to contain herself and be respectful towards others, you’ll have to find a new holiday companion in future. Sounds to me that she must be under some stress or going through some psychological issues you are not aware of. Make it clear you are willing to support and help her, but you cannot sit back and do nothing because it also affects you. Sadly, if she is not able to give you a reasonable explanation for her bad attitude, and you don’t believe she is capable or willing to change, then you may have to accept that your friendship has run its course and move on. Good luck and let me know how you both get on.
You can’t expect your partner to simply switch back on again. Don’t forget that she’s been hurt and confused, too. You really needed to include her in the whole therapy episode for her to understand what you were going through. You really need to have a heart-to-heart with her and explain what happened and how keen you are to get your relationship back on track. Describe what you’ve been through, then suggest going on a special night out. Woo her back and pretend that you’re dating again and show her that you love her and you care. All relationships go through ups and downs and honest communication is vital. Good luck! ---------------------------------------

HOROSCOPE THIS MONTH CANCER Capricorn 22/12-20/01
January 2019 Monthly Horoscope for Capricorn: With a Solar Eclipse in your sign this year, dear Capricorn, you begin 2019 with a clean slate and fresh energy for reinvention. The Lunar Eclipse on the 21st, though, is more about financial, ownership, and intimate matters and can involve a sweet release, perhaps of an obligation. Resolution of a problem can feel freeing now. Love and partnership can be in some level of flux this year as you are redefining yourself and exploring your independence. These themes are strong in January. The month begins with Mars at the bottom of your solar chart and special attention to your heart and home. Jupiter is in your privacy sector, too, reinforcing the personal, private, and inward focus that often dominates January's energies. Projects on (or in) the home can be satisfying. Excess energy is best channeled into constructive projects and improvements. Otherwise, there can be some tension. Mind you, if problems have been brewing in your personal life or with family, they may need some airing now, and Mars here has a beautiful way of pulling everything up and out into the open. It might feel disruptive in the moment but can help clear the decks. Mercury finally enters your sign on the 4th after a lengthy hiatus (for quickmoving Mercury) in your privacy sector, and you find your voice, wanting to be heard or to share your thoughts. Venus heads into your solar twelfth house on the 7th, however, and there is more rumination to do and possible hesitation regarding your feelings. This 36 | Dec 18- Jan 19 ENJOY No 135

Cleburne - Do Not Deny Santa Claus’s Existence
A 31-year-old activist from Cleburne, Texas who was busy telling children that Santa Claus did not exist has been arrested for trespassing on the property of a church in northern Texas. The arrest of Aaron U. was effected as the place was hosting a lunch attended by a Santa Claus. According to authorities, Aaron refused to leave the premises when impressed upon to, and continued to sow trouble. The police arrested him and accused him of illegally entering the church grounds. He was imprisoned in a Johnson County detention centre. The mayor of Cleburne, Scott C., reacted on his Facebook page, writing: "Don't hurt Santa Claus!" He added, mocking: "No doubt he wanted coal in his Christmas stocking”.
2 Edmonton Opening My Christmas Parcel 50 Years Later
He had been in the news for refusing to unpack the Christmas present that his girlfriend had offered him 50 years ago, a few minutes before breaking up with him. Finally, he has discovered the contents of the parcel just recently when she went to him and opened it for him. Adrian P., now married and father of two, received the little gift wrapped in glossy purple paper from Vicki A. a little before Christmas in 1971. Vicki was Adrian’s very first friend at George S. Henry High School in Toronto. However, Vicki ended their relationship with her gift. Depressed, Adrian returned home, threw the parcel under the Christmas tree and swore never to open it. A few days back, after the intervention of a common friend who had put them in touch on Facebook, Adrian and Vicki met at a crowded café northwest of Edmonton, and she began to unpack the gift. She herself did not know what she would see, for she had forgotten what was inside long ago. It was in fact a small book titled ‘Love Is: New Ways To Spot That Certain Feeling’ with cartoons and sayings about love. For years, even after his marriage, Adrian always placed the gift, though somehow spoiled, under the tree every Christmas. The reunion was a great event that served as a fund-raising opportunity for the Christmas Bureau of Edmonton, a local charity organization that provides Christmas meals to families in need. 38 | Dec 18- Jan 19 ENJOY No 135

Seattle - Landing Back To Deliver The Human Heart
A flight linking Seattle to Dallas was forced to turn back after it was discovered that a human heart destined to be transplanted had been left on board by mistake. The aircraft had travelled about 950 kilometres on a course of more than 2500 kilometres when the crew discovered that the "cargo essential to life" from California, and which was supposed to be conveyed to a hospital in Seattle, was still there. Spokesman for the airline said: "Once we realized the error, we immediately initiated the return to Seattle". Finding himself under the obligation to state to his passengers the reasons for flying back to Seattle, the captain confided to horrified passengers that this cargo contained a human heart. The airline, however, did not provide any additional details. Experts believe that a human heart can usually be kept between four and six hours before a transplant. However, the mistake was deemed to have caused the waste of four hours of precious time, three of which were spent in the air. Andrew G., a doctor travelling aboard the aircraft, has narrated the whole incident to a local newspaper, describing the shock of passengers as they were told about the short period of time left to transport the heart to destination for the transplant. This doctor could simply not comprehend how such "atrocious scenario of flagrant negligence" could happen!

4 Los Angeles - Welcome To The Disgusting Food Museum How about a bit of fried tarantula and egg cooked in urine? With just little baby mouse wine to push everything down your throat? Those meals are part of the 80 dishes listed on the menu of the ‘Disgusting Food Museum’ opened recently in Los Angeles, with the aim to whet not the appetite, of course, but rather the mind of visitors to other ways of feeding. Originally launched in Malmö, Sweden in October 2018, the exhibition will stay in Los Angeles for two months. "If we can change what people see as disgusting, maybe we can also prepare them to accept new forms of sustainable protein," Samuel West, founder of the exhibition, says, presenting a plate of Mopane worms. These large butterfly caterpillars are an important source of protein for millions of South Africans.

Drogheda - Married To A Ghost Amanda T.’s story can make some laugh but for her it was serious. In February 2018, Amanda T., a 35-year-old Irish woman, married a ghost of Haitian pirate named Jack, who died over 300 years ago. In order for the union to be legal, Amanda organized a private ceremony in the presence of a psychic so that her ‘fiancé’ could say "Yes" through the latter. Their ‘idyll’ began in 2014, when the phantom visited Amanda and spoke with her during her sleep. The exchanges took place for six months before they decided to marry. "I was horrified to find out that I had romantic feelings for Jack", she then said. A few months after their ‘union’, Amanda T. has announced the end of their relationship. "I feel it's time to tell everyone that my marriage is over", she wrote on social networks. A mind-boggling story that she would like to explain but “in due course”, as she says: “You have to be careful when you touch spirituality. It's not something to laugh about”, she said.

A psychology graduate, Samuel West remains cautious: as an entrance ticket to the museum, the visitor is given a vomit bag. Some dishes exhibited in the Museum may appear disgusting to some visitors due to their mode of preparation: Chinese mouse wine, obtained by drowning baby mice in rice alcohol and leaving them to macerate at length. In the plates of the museum, there are also live animals, such as the "Casu marzu", sheep-milk cheese made in Sardinia and teeming with maggots, giving it its characteristic creamy texture. Even more astonishing are the ‘boy's eggs’, a traditional dish from eastern China very close to a banal hardboiled egg... but longboiled in prepubescent boys’ urine. Other recipes include the Mongolian Bloody Mary, made with pickled sheep eyeballs and tomato juice; the bull penis; and the balut, a boiled duck embryo. “Disgust is highly individual. The thought of eating a spider makes some people hungry but makes others want to vomit,” Samuel avers, adding: "The goal is to make people aware that we should not judge the food of other cultures too hastily. But you could not call it Museum of Sustainable Food or Exhibition of Cultural Differences; no one would have come”.

SOURSOP: THE VITAMIN C SUPERFRUIT THAT MAY HELP FIGHT CANCER By draxe.com 1. Filled with Beneficial Antioxidants that May Help Reduce Eye Disease Many of the potential guanabana benefits are thought to be derived from its antioxidant properties. (1) Studies show that the phytonutrients found in the fruit are high in antioxidant compounds, including alkaloids, saponins, terpenoids, flavonoids, coumarins, lactones, anthraquinones, tannins, cardiac glycosides, phenols and phytosterols. This is quite a group that can help fight disease-causing cells and even block tumor growth.
«
Additional studies have reported that antioxidants may also help with eye disease. The AgeRelated Eye Disease Study led by the National Eye Institute found antioxidants to be useful, especially when consumed as a cocktail of vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene and zinc. In one study, this combination actually lowered the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration by 25 percent in those who already had the disease.
What if I told you there was a fruit that’s great for your eyes, can treat infections and even shows promise as a potential cancerfighting food? Would you be interested? If you answered yes — and why wouldn’t you? — let me introduce you to soursop. Soursop is usually found in South America and often the basis for beverages, ice creams and other popular sweets. It’s known to have a few other names, such as graviola, custard apple, paw paw, guyabano and guanabana in English and Spanish-speaking countries alike. Additionally, it has superfruit-healing properties as a high-antioxidant food due to its vitamin C, B vitamins, calcium, phosphorous and even some iron that it contains. These vitamins and minerals are why soursop benefits include potentially helping reduce eye disease, treat infections and potentially even fight cancer.

2. Exhibits Anti-Inflammatory and Antimicrobial Properties Extracts from graviola leaves have shown anti-inflammatory properties in addition to their antimicrobial characteristics, making soursop a versatile anti-inflammatory food. Studies indicate that soursop may also be a natural anti-infection treatment for root canals. Often dangerous chemicals, such as sodium hypochlorite (a form of bleach), are used to irrigate the root canal to prevent infection. However, the dangers of these chemicals can pose health
hazards. A study published in the Journal of Contemporary Dental Practice shows that the use of graviola to irrigate the root canal is very effective, making it a much healthier option. 3. May Help Fight Cancer If you’ve ever wondered which fruits are good for cancer patients, soursop may top the charts due to its anti-cancer effects. Research published in Food & Function reports that bioactive components of graviola leaf extracts may have positive cancer-fighting properties. This is due to the free radical scavenging abilities and antioxidant enzymes they contain, thus helping to eliminate cancer cells. (5) It’s believed that the guanabana leaves kill cancer cells by blocking ATP production. ATP, aka adenosine triphosphate, is a usable form of energy for cells. This energy is contained within a chemical bond that, if released, can be used to foster other activity within the cells. However, the graviola leaf extract can help block this activity, which may reduce the impact of the cancer cells by breaking them down until they fall apart. This is known as apoptosis or programmed cell death. Additionally, scientists at the Tepic Institute of Technology (Instituto
HEALTH TIPS
Tecnológico de Tepic – ITT) in Mexico discovered acetogenins in the soursop fruit, which hold potent chemotherapeutic properties. So is gaunabana good for cancer? Keep in mind that current research is limited to in vitro studies, so it’s difficult to determine how soursop may affect the growth and development of cancer cells in humans. More studies are needed before experts can really determine whether the anti-cancer effects of soursop apply to the general population as well. It does, however, show potential as a cancer-fighting food.
4. Potentially Kills Pancreatic Cancer Cells Graviola extract has shown an ability to help kill numerous types of cancer cells, specifically pancreatic cancer cells. A study conducted by the University of Nebraska Medical Center found that the extract can greatly reduce pancreatic cancer. Because cancer cells have more glucose, cell growth is typically enhanced as well as tumor growth. However, in this study, cells that were treated with graviola extract decreased their glucose uptake when compared to untreated cells. This decrease can make it difficult for the bad cells to multiply and grow. This helps block the spread of cancer.
5. Treats Infections Graviola is often used to treat infections caused by bacteria and parasites, including leishmaniasis. Leishmaniasis is a disease that’s transmitted through the bite of sand fleas. It’s also been used to treat herpes, coughing and vomiting. Bacterial and viral infections can cause coughing, sneezing, fever and more symptoms. While these symptoms may be frustrating, they’re effective since they’re part of the method that the body uses to trigger the immune system to get to work ridding the body of any infection. Graviola and graviola tea may be able to efficiently fight the infection and get you back on your feet.e

Apple Cider Vinegar
An extremely versatile and inexpensive natural skin care product, apple cider vinegar benefits include helping to kill pathogens (like bacteria), clearing skin problems caused by gut issues, cleansing the skin and helping to stop acne, plus providing antifungal properties. The use of ACV for skin problems dates all the way back to Hippocrates (460-377 BC), considered “the father of modern medicine” and a believer in the use of antifungal ACV and raw honey for cleaning ulcerations and treating skin sores. It also contains highly beneficial acetic acid and certain vitamins like potassium and magnesium that make it a detoxifying agent when consumed internally, since it boosts liver function and helps balance bacteria in the gut.
Raw Honey Raw honey is one of the best natural sources of nutrients, enzymes, vitamins and skin-boosting acids. Benefits of raw honey include reducing breakouts, providing moisturizing properties, containing antiseptic qualities, encouraging wound healing, fighting allergies or rashes, and helping to reduce scars. Raw honey is unheated, unprocessed and unpasteurized unlike most honeys available in grocery stores. Therefore, it is able to keep all of its nutrients intact as they’re not destroyed by processing. As an antimicrobial honey is particularly suitable as a dressing for wounds and burns. (3) It’s also been included in treatments used to heal bacterial infections, dandruff, diaper dermatitis, psoriasis and more. Honey also makes a great homemade natural skin care product as an acne cure because it can be used in facial cleansers even on sensitive or mixed skin types. Take half a teaspoon, warm between hands and spread on face gently, leave on for 10 minutes then rinse with warm water and pat dry. To use it as an exfoliator for dry winter skin, try adding two cups of honey to a bath, soak for 15 minutes, then add one cup of baking soda for the final 15 minutes. e

How Can We
By Dr. Janna Fond
Communicate Better? O
pen, honest communication should be part of every healthy relationship. Use the guidelines below to open up the channels of communication between you and your partner. If you’re in an unhealthy or abusive relationship, be careful using these tips. You know your relationship best. If any of these tips would put you in danger, don’t try them.
Here are the five characteristics 1. There's power in living alone.
For healthier communication, try to: Find the Right Time. If something is bothering you and you would like to have a conversation about it, it can be helpful to find the right time to talk. Try to find a time when both you and your partner are calm and not distracted, stressed or in a rush. You might even consider scheduling a time to talk if one or both of you is really busy! Talk Face to Face. Avoid talking about serious matters or issues in writing. Text messages, letters and emails can be misinterpreted. Talk in person so there aren’t any unnecessary miscommunications. If you’re having trouble collecting your thoughts, consider writing them down ahead of time and reading them out loud to your partner. Do Not Attack. Even when we mean well, we can sometimes come across as harsh because of our word choice. Using “you” can sound like you’re attacking, which will make your partner defensive and less receptive to your message. Instead, try using “I” or “we.” For example, say “I feel like we haven’t been as close lately” instead of “You have been distant with me.” 46 | Dec 18- Jan 19 ENJOY No 135
HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS to take: Stop. If you get really angry about something, stop, take a step back and breathe. Tell your partner you’d like to take a short break before continuing the conversation. Give yourself time to calm down by watching TV, talking to a friend, playing a video game, taking a walk, listening to some music or whatever helps you relax. Taking a break can keep the situation from getting worse. Be Honest. Agree to be honest. Sometimes the truth hurts, but it’s the key to a healthy relationship. Admit that you aren’t always perfect and apologize when you make a mistake instead of making excuses. You will feel better and it will help strengthen your relationship. Check Your Body Language. Let your partner know you’re really listening by giving them your full attention: sit up, face them and make eye contact when speaking. Don’t take a phone call, text or play a video game when you’re talking. Show your partner you respect them by listening and responding. Use the 48 Hour Rule. If your partner does something that
makes you angry, you need to tell them about it. But you don’t have to do so right away. If you’re still hurt 48 hours later, say something. If not, consider forgetting about it. But remember your partner can’t read your mind. If you don’t speak up when you’re upset, there is no way for them to apologize or change. Once you do mention your hurt feelings and your partner sincerely apologies, let it go. Don’t bring up past issues if they’re not relevant. How to Communicate if You Are Angry It’s okay to get angry in a relationship – everyone does at some point! What’s important is that you resolve conflicts in a healthy way. If you get angry with your partner, here are a few steps
Think. After you’re no longer upset, think about the situation and why you got so angry. Was it how your partner spoke or something they did? Figure out the real problem then think about how to explain your feelings. Talk. Finally, talk to your partner and when you do, follow the tips above. Listen. After you tell your partner how you feel, remember to stop talking and listen to what they have to say. You both deserve the opportunity to express how you feel in a safe and healthy environment. Communicating isn’t always easy. At first, some of these tips may feel unnatural or awkward, but they will help you communicate better and build a healthy relationship.e

health benefits too! Jump training (also known as
plyometrics) can help to build bone density, improve strength, improve power, shape your body, improve
neuromuscular efficiency and much more! However,
it is very important to have adequate core strength, joint stability, balance stability, and flexibility before
doing the jump exercises. So, proceed with caution.
You don’t need to jump too much. Fake jumping (just lifting the heels) is also beneficial. Either way,
you can begin at a basic level then progress to more advanced levels as your body adapts.
Ok. Let’s do it! Time to JUMP INTO THE HOLIDAYS with this JUMP FOR JOY WORKOUT!
