FIRST WORD

a letter From the publisher

“It's so good to know that wherever you are, a Mom is with you in spirit and in love.” DOMINIQUE PARAVICINI Editor

Dear Friends, How else could I start addressing you here if not by paying due homage to women in this month of Mother’s Day celebration! To all Mothers, who have brought us up, nurtured us, guided us, prayed over us, worried about us, and even put up with us when we drive them crazy, we say: “Thank you! We love you! God bless you! Happy Day every day!” We have welcomed an auspicious occurrence in the country lately, and that points to good omen for the nation. I am referring to the opening of EURACARE Advanced Diagnosis and Heart Centre in downtown Accra, an upmarket clinic offering the same high quality medical diagnostic and treatment that patients fly to seek overseas. Our team went on reportage at the clinic and came back with a good story to tell. In this issue, we propose to our readers a general presentation of the facility, pending our series of interviews with some of the internationallytrained full-time and consulting specialists who make up the medical team performing wonders there. We were in attendance at the Silver Star Towers for the unveiling of the new Mercedes- Benz Actros and Arocs, which have come to elevate the standard for trucks and their operations in Ghana. Read about those newdimension vehicles in here. Lastly, we say “Akwaaba!” to BURGER KING®, the global Whopper and hamburger authorities. They have opened their first fast food restaurant in Ghana, within the Accra Mall, under the company’s expansion strategy in Africa. Check inside this issue for our photo reportage of the opening event. Do enjoy also our standing columns, particularly Billie’s Ask Billie, Quiana’s Fitness Tips, Kamilla’s Parents’ Corner, ENJOY’s Financial Tips and the rest. ENJOY!

EURACARE

ADVANCED DIAGNOSTICS & HEART CENTRE A WORLD-CLASS MEDICAL FACILITY IN ACCRA

E

EURACARE Advanced Diagnostics & Heart Centre, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Eurapharma, the CFAO Group’s healthcare arm, is an ultramodern clinic located in downtown Accra, in the quiet neighbourhood of Cantonments. Ahead of the formal media launch of EURACARE Advanced Diagnostics & Heart Centre, ENJOY’s reporters visited the newly-constructed facility and came to the conclusion that the new configuration of medical services of EURACARE fits into the 21st century world-class medical environment. 6 | May 2018 ENJOY No 129

REPORTAGE

THE INFRASTRUCTURE

The novel EURACARE Advanced Diagnostics & Heart Centre opened its doors to patients in October 2017. The two-level clinic, built on a 1,200 square-meter land, includes 3 reception-waiting areas, a 4-bed ICU, a state-of-the-art Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, high-resolution radiological services, a full clinical laboratory, an endoscopic suite, ultrasound and dental unit. EURACARE provides 3D-Dental Panoramic X-ray services. Throughout the hospital, where cleanliness and serenity make your day, large windows make the place light and airy, thereby accentuating the feeling of comfort and relaxation. Moreover, an upmarket VIP unit is available, which guarantees optimum privacy, discreetness and exclusivity of care. Security of course is a standard feature! All this makes for an attractive and welcoming environment offering patients and visitors comfortable waiting areas and ultramodern consulting rooms.

Exterior

The way care is provided at this hospital is also an amazing departure from what we all have experienced so far as patients in this part of the world. Services have been designed around the needs of the patient to enhance the quality of care and the speed at which diagnosis and treatment is provided. The stated Mission of the clinic is to bring WorldClass Medical Diagnostic and Treatment Services to Ghana, i.e. to “provide patients with the same quality of medical diagnostic and treatment that they would find elsewhere”, i.e. in the United Kingdom or the United States of America, only without incurring the costs, stress and many inconveniences associated with a foreign trip while battling with a severe medical condition.

Dentist Room

At EURACARE Advanced Diagnostics & Heart Centre, the focus is on offering patients a wide range of services which are consistent with quality care, and the latest medical techniques ensure patients receive the most up-to-date medical services, which includes accurate diagnosis of patients’ conditions as the name of the facility would imply. MOTHERHOOD POEM

A Poem About Mothers A Mother's love is consistent and patient,it will never Fade

A mother's love is warm and compassionate, even in the shade. A mother's love will always help you through the weakest hours, A mother's love is always like a bouquest of flower.A mother's lover is strong and will never steer

Poem by Patarica D. Nunn

A Mother’s Love A Mother's love is something that no on can explain, It is made of deep devotion and of sacrifice and pain, It is endless and unselfish and enduring come what may For nothing can destroy it or take that love away . . . It is patient and forgiving when all others are forsaking, And it never fails or falters even though the heart is breaking . . . It believes beyond believing when the world around condemns, And it glows with all the beauty of the rarest, brightest gems . . . It is far beyond defining, it defies all explanation, And it still remains a secret like the mysteries of creation . . . A many splendoured miracle man cannot understand And another wondrous evidence of God's tender guiding hand.

Guests were particularly"thrilled over being at liberty to customise their hamburgers. The 340-square-metre Accra Mall Burger King restaurant sits 120 guests. CAREER CHANGE

W

hen people decide to change careers midstream, so many reasons may account for that: having skills that are not being used in one’s current career; facing a crossroads; desiring to try a new line of business; feeling awfully bored in one’s present situation; making one’s CV look more attractive; etc. Whereas changing work paths can revitalize a career, boost earning potential and help secure you your dream job, it can at the same time disrupt a career if not handled properly. Thus there are a number of careerchanging don'ts you simply cannot afford to overlook. Unclear or Indecisive Career Planning It is extremely important to have a detailed action plan towards your success. Without a plan, you might be left with only the option of taking the first job offer that comes along, be it a good fit or not. Also, by switching career tracks frequently, or by not having any real direction, you are not likely to go very far. The idea is to be able to build upon the experience and education already acquired, and opt for a career move in which that previous knowledge can be applied. Desperation-driven Career Change You may be tempted to flee a dead-end job that is making 22 | May 2018 ENJOY No 129

you rather miserable; specialists would advise you however not to run away from your profession completely based on that fact. Changing careers just to escape an employer you do not enjoy working for may at the end turn out to be a rash decision. Career changes tend to work best when you are at the top of your game in one profession and want to make a change to further your earning potential or knowledge base. Benefit-driven Career Change Money/benefits should not always be the deciding factor when changing careers. It might be more important to examine whether or not this career will take you to where you want to be. So make sure your new career path is something you are passionate about, and seek to align your work with your preferences. You are advised to ensure that the type of work you will be doing and the amount of work you will have to put in will be worth the pay increase. Taking an Entry-level Job in a New Field

What will be the benefit of you not being in a positon where you will be able to apply past skills and knowledge in your new job? Make sure you are not so desperate to make a change in your career that you will have to sell yourself short: never opt for anything less than a lateral move. Choose a new career that will allow you to maintain your salary and expertise level, while learning a new trade. Career Change based on Outside Pressure The grass seems always greener in the neighbour’s garden. Just because your best friend or neighbour is successful in a certain career does not mean that you will be — or that you will be happy doing it. So certainly consider the career field, but make sure you do the research before jumping into it. Also, your parents, your spouse or anyone else should not be able to influence your career choice. They don’t have to live that career every day; you do! So do not switch careers because of outside pressure to have a ‘better career’ lest you hate your new career: you might end up resenting the person who pressured you to make the switch. While there is no surefire recipe for success in the business world, there are plenty of pitfalls that professionals can fall into when changing careers. It is vital to consider each career move with care.

THE FINANCIAL TERM OF THE MONTH: SMART HOME A convenient home setup where appliances and devices can be automatically controlled remotely from anywhere in the world using a networked device. A smart home has its devices interconnected through the Internet. Door locks, televisions, home monitors, cameras, lights and even appliances such as the refrigerator can be controlled through one home automation system, which is installed on a mobile or other networked device, and the user can create time schedules for certain changes to take effect.©Investopedia.com e

Our Beautiful Ghanaian Customs:

ABOAKYIR FESTIVAL

A

boakyir festival is celebrated by the Effutus in Winneba in the central region of Ghana. Traditionally christened ‘Simpa’, Winneba is a historic fishing town. Residents are known as Simpafo (people of Simpa). 24 | May 2018 ENJOY No 129

The festival is in celebration of the migration of the Effutus from the ancient Western Sudan Empire where they were led by 2 brothers and a god called Penkye Otu, which was believed to have given them protection from all dangers.

FESTIVALS

“The deer is then carried on shoulders by the winning group amidst drumming and dancing through the principal streets of Winneba to the Otuana where the chief priest waits to perform the first stage of the sacrifice for the gods.”

In a bid to show appreciation to the gesture, the people consulted the custodian of the god in order to give it a befitting sacrifice. Their request was granted, but they wished they had never made the request at all, for they were then instructed to sacrifice a young member of the Royal family every year to their god. This was no good news so they made an appeal to their god who asked for an animal from the wildcat family to be caught alive and beheaded before the god. They settled on Lion but the hunters happened to became prey themselves. They couldn’t sustain that and the alternative was a deer. The reason for the choice of the deer was that the god saw its blood to be similar to that of humans. The sacrifice of a deer to the gods was later turned into Aboakyir, which translates as ‘hunting for game or animal’. The festival is celebrated on every first Saturday of May.

Celebration Two weeks to the festival, chiefs and elders meet at the Omanhene’s palace to discuss the upcoming activities. Then the Omanhene places a Winneba district ban on deer hunting, and drumming. The elders of the town use this quiet period to perform rituals pertaining to the old culture. The ban on hunting stops on the day of festival, after the return of the two Asafo (literally: war people) groups. On Friday before the festival, the Asafo groups prepare the paths that lead to the forest by performing rituals believed to combat likely magical objects that might be hidden by rivalry groups. Any magical charms discovered are taken to the traditional shrine and burnt into ashes. At dawn on Saturday, all lads belonging to the various Asafo convene at the shore to have a bathe in the sea, a final ritual in readiness for the deer hunting mission. The women on the other hand prepare the breakfast for the men before they start their journey. After the meal, the men gather at their posts and with chant of war songs, march to the paramount chief’s palace where they will be welcomed by the chief, elders and members of the royal family.

“Their effort is lauded and the animal is received and inspected to ensure it is in a good condition for the consumption of the Penky Otu.”

ENJOY No 129 May 2018 | 25

FESTIVALS The hunting then starts with the making of deafening noise in a bid to scare a deer out for the group to catch. In most cases, more than one deer may be caught but the first is used as a sacrifice for the Penkye Otu and other lesser gods. While the hunting goes on, the Omanhene, sub-chiefs, elders, tourists and the Efutu community wait for the Asafo groups to return from their hunting expedition. The first group to make a catch rushes back to the grounds to make their presentation to the chief. Their effort is lauded and the animal is received and inspected to ensure it is in a good condition for the consumption of the Penky Otu. It is seen as a bad omen when a group returns home empty handed. If the chief is satisfied with the catch, he steps on the animal three times to demonstrate his acceptance and bring the competition to an end. The deer is then carried on shoulders by the winning group amidst drumming and dancing through the principal streets of Winneba to the Otuana where the chief priest waits to perform the first stage of the sacrifice for the gods. After this, the drumming and dancing continues till noon when the first session ends and most participants retire to their various homes to rest before the afternoon’s grand parade. Masquerades display in colourful dresses. On Sunday, the deer is offered to Penkye Otu and the other 77 gods of the Effutu land. A statue of Penkye Otu, bordered by the other deities, is positioned under a black umbrella some few meters away from the shrine. This is to signify the unity between the gods and the people of Winneba. The Osow then performs the libation and then asks the gods to accept the people’s offer. After the libation, the deer is slaughtered and the blood smeared all over the image of Penkye Otu. It is then boiled and scattered around the shrine for the gods. The deer’s skin is later used to wrap the image of Penkye Otu. After this ceremony has been successfully performed, the Osow leads the crowd in the concluding stage of the rituals known as Ebisatsi. After these rituals, the crowd goes into merriment with drumming and singing through the principal streets. e 26 | May 2018 ENJOY No 129

Drink a serving of Welch’s grape juice, and you satisfy your entire daily requirement for vitamin C. With 100 percent of the daily recommended intake, this juice may offer immune system benefits. A study published in the October 2004 issue of “Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews” indicates that vitamin C does not prevent colds except in specific cases -- in those subjected to cold temperatures or those who partake in vigorous exercise, all for short durations. Researchers note that one study revealed that participants who took a dose of 8 g of vitamin C each day experienced a reduction in cold duration when the vitamin was taken at the onset of illness. While drinking Welch’s grape juice may not help prevent you from getting sick, but it may help you get over your cold sooner.

ask Billie... Billie Richardson is a Holistic Psychotherapist. She studied in the UK and has been practicing in Accra for the past 12 years. She is the CEO of Corporate Counselling, located at Roman Ridge Arcades at Airport Residential Area. Your questions, comments and suggestions are welcome at the address: dearbillie@enjoyaccra.com

Dear Billie, I feel I’ve been totally deceived by my girlfriend. I met her online in 2016, and for the first six months, we just talked. She was friendly and funny, and I really looked forward to her calls each night. We finally arranged to go away for the weekend and as soon as we saw each other, it was fantastic – like we’d known each other for ages. The sex was great, too, and we were both really sad when the weekend was over. But since then things have never been the same. We still speak, but only meet up when she wants me to buy her things. It’s like there are two sides to her – I now get the

feeling she doesn’t like me but just wants to use me, she even makes comments about how I dress and the way I talk. I often feel I just irritate her. What am I doing wrong? Kwabena in Berekuso Dear Kwabena You’re not doing anything wrong. I just feel that this young lady enjoyed the flirting and the thrill of the chase, but as soon as you met, the spell was broken. Your girlfriend now sees that you’re a normal person, not as someone she can fantasize about. You have every right to dress and speak as you please – don’t feel you have to change to meet her expectations.

I am concerned about this young woman crushing your confidence and leaving you confused and upset, so I suggest you give yourself a good, long break from this relationship in order to clear your mind and think about yourself and your needs. Let her know that you need some space, and don’t allow yourself to be used in an effort to be loved. Good luck and let us know how you get on. ---------------------------------------Dear Billie, How do I make my daughter see that her boyfriend obviously has another woman? She says she trusts him, but he’s never around. I’ve never known a person to “work” as much as he does. Whether it’s Christmas Day or Easter Sunday, it seems as if his boss can’t cope without him. He’s always disappearing for days at a time, and even when he’s with her, he’s often in the garden on his phone. His behavior is so suspicious, but she just trusts him 100%. I think I’ve exhausted all my arguments with her and I’m afraid that if I push her any further, I might lose her entirely. I’m really desperate for advice Benjamin in Labadi

ADVICE CORNER Dear Benjamin, Sometimes, we compromise our values and inner truths for the sake of being loved. Clearly, your daughter is in such need to hold on to her boyfriend that she’ll turn a blind eye and believe anything he tells her. I suspect that in her heart, she knows that he’s playing games. But if she’s not willing to admit the truth to herself or give up on him yet, you have to step back. I understand that it’s upsetting to watch her making mistakes, but it’s her choice to live this way – even if you have to pick up the pieces later on. Good luck and keep in touch. ---------------------------------------Dear Billie, My fiancée Ama and I had been together for five years when she had a secret abortion. I was hoping we’d have a family together one day, but she didn’t even tell me she was pregnant. Instead, she had our baby terminated because she wanted to put her career first. I was – and still am – devastated, and finished our relationship straight away. Now she is begging me to reconsider. She says she loves me and will consider having children when the time is right. But what about my feelings? How can we resume a relationship when she is so selfish, secretive and cruel? Alex devastated in Osu Dear Alex, Why did Ama keep the pregnancy secret? Perhaps she felt that she had the right to make her own decisions about her own body. Personally, I feel she needed to tell you, because you were engaged and you deserved to know. Should you get back together? Only you can answer that, but what you mustn’t do is return to this familiar relationship out of habit. If you really

love this woman, perhaps you can mend your relationship together – but restoring trust won’t be easy. Take your time and think carefully before you commit again. I suggest you could benefit from counselling especially regarding the abortion. Take it easy in the meantime and let me know how you get on. -------------------------------------Dear Billie, Since we moved in together, my partner thinks she has a perfect right to go through my personal possessions. She plays with my laptop and my phone, and thinks nothing of going through my pockets and wallet for change. She admits that she sometimes just has a “good old snoop around” because she’s nosy, and the other day, I even found her checking my bank statements. This is really starting to unsettle me. I’m not doing anything wrong and don’t have anything to hide, but I do believe that I’m entitled to some privacy. When I get annoyed, she just laughs. How do I get her to realize that she’s seriously overstepping the mark?

Dear Jason Your girlfriend needs to understand that this is not a joke. You are now living together in an adult relationship, and there needs to be boundaries and mutual respect. Sit her down and explain that her snooping is intrusive and has to stop. If she’s feeling insecure, paranoid about you contacting other women or worried that you’re stashing away money to spend on yourself, reassure her that you are open and honest and can be trusted. But if she shows no sign of getting the message, and you fear that she’s already becoming clingy, suspicious and unreasonable, then maybe you need to re-examine the future of this whole relationship. Good luck and please keep in touch.

PARENTS' CORNER

Your child’s Creative Power Kamilla Kirpalani Founder and Academic Director Maria Montessori Teacher Training Center Little Explorers Montessori Plus School

A creative mind is highly sought after in today’s adult world. People who are creative often find solutions to questions in their chosen field that have left the rest of us baffled. These are the people who skyrocket to the top, the nobox-at-all thinkers. As parents we hope our children grow up to be these, especially as finding solutions makes life much less stressful. So what creates creative, problem solving brains? Here are just a few simple guidelines that are easy to implement in everyday life. » Give children real life challenges: If children spend all day glued to the TV or being catered to, they really will not have real life encounters. 34 | May 2018 ENJOY No 129

Give them their own work to do, allow them to maintain their own living space and items. » Give less objects: The more toys a child has, the less ability s/he has to concentrate. If you gave your child just 6 items every two weeks, s/he would play longer with just one and use it in many creative ways. » Give items that can be combined rather than readymade sets: Cardboard cartons, plastic disposable cups, bottle caps and voila! A castle can be born - a bit of paint and it is magnificent; a hoop can be rolled, spun, skipped in and jumped through... there are so many options.

» Give opportunity: As long as they are safe, those around them are safe and nothing is being vandalized, there really is no need to interfere in children’s work. We are often quick to praise, quick to take over, quick to suggest and most often quick to rescue. It’s best to step back and listen as they make their own way forward. » Give value: Children are very logical and intelligent. Whenever possible present them with two options of your choice and allow them to decide on one, of course, you then have to honor their decision .This will teach them to trust their own opinions and instincts. » Give information: Children have a beautiful ability to soak up information easily, so this is the perfect time to expose them to different cultures, ways of life, characters and experiences. Accompanying you in day to day life allows them to observe your reaction to new experiences, thus creating a data base of behavioral options. Happy parenting! e

It can also be suitable for travel and getaways, or simply breaking the usual routine. You're more assertive and independent in the first half of the month. There can be some tensions regarding an intimate relationship, the distribution or sharing of money, or power dynamics in a close relationship. The last week of May brings an energy shift towards career and family. Unexpected opportunities to travel or expand your education can emerge. Career matters push forward suddenly from the 21st. You're taking charge, and others are following your lead. The second half of May is also solid for your social life. Friends can be supportive and can help you out with your practical affairs. This is a favorable period for networking, particularly business-related.

Libra

May 2018 Libra Monthly Horoscope: Financial or intimate matters can be in sharp focus this month, dear Libra. This can be about loans or bonuses or getting close to someone and dealing with the power dynamics involved. You are tuned in to the deeper issues and looking beyond the surface of matters for answers. This is an excellent time for researching, editing, or otherwise going over business, health, and financial issues. Expanding your personal resources is especially important to you now. Your spirits lift considerably in the last week of the month. People in high places are more inclined to notice your efforts and/or talents from the 19th forward.

Scorpio

24/10-22/11 April 2018 Scorpio Monthly Horoscope: You begin April with a heightened awareness of your need to take extra downtime or moments to yourself, dear Scorpio. While this is important, April's larger themes are more about getting your work and health routines into order and focusing on your close relationships.Mars is moving through your communications sector, igniting your curiosity and exciting you about various personal interests,

communications, and learning or teaching all month. As quickly as Mars would like you to move, however, it aligns with heavy Saturn on the 2nd and then intense Pluto on the 26th. As such, for much of the month (from the 2-26), Mars can feel under pressure, confined, or restricted.

Sagittarius 23/11-21/12

May 2018 Sagittarius Monthly Horoscope: While work and mundane matters take center stage for much of May, dear Sagittarius, this is nevertheless a lively month for relationships and a robust period for your emotional life, as well. Organizing, managing, and handling the details of your life will go a long way towards a stronger sense of accomplishment with a heavy emphasis on your sector of work and health.

Capricorn 22/12-20/01

May 2018 Capricorn Monthly Horoscope: While you have a well-deserved reputation for working hard, dear Capricorn, this month you're more inclined to choose pleasure over work whenever possible. This is a good thing, as it helps to feed your spirit. As the month advances, you do pick up the pace with work and health routines. In the meantime, your romantic and creative worlds are set for a significant change. A new beginning is in the works, whether this means a new affair or project, a new way of expressing yourself, or a fresh start in an existing relationship, pursuit, or hobby. Domestic matters are also changeful and in need of extra attention in May. Even so, where there was coolness or confusion in family and business recently, there is now more warmth and directness. Smoothing out rocky areas is, at the very least, straightforward..

Aquarius

21/01-19/02

May 2018 Aquarius Monthly Horoscope: The month begins with a strong focus on family and attention to domestic matters, dear Aquarius, and your nesting instincts are strong. Creative energy increases as May progresses. In fact, the second half of the month plays considerably differently for you than the first - you're coming out of your shell, big time. Uranus enters your sector of home, though, and there are exciting and perhaps disruptive themes related to your personal life as a result.

Pisces

You are communicative and sociable, reaching out to others and enjoying the connections you're making in May. Later May brings a stronger desire to enjoy the peace and security of family life, however, and far less interest in venturing far from home. Teamwork and communication can strengthen bonds in the meantime. There can be a real scuffle of activity, learning, and communicating, in fact. There's likely to be an emphasis on learning, particularly self-taught or home-learning endeavors.

Aries

21/3-20/04

May 2018 Monthly Horoscope for Aries: There is a powerful focus on relationships, personal appeal, and magnetism this month, dear Aries. Even so, it's less about pairing up as it is for increasing your confidence and enjoying a sense of freedom. Building your resources and solidifying plans are strong themes, as well. There is a growing theme of communicating and connecting as May advances. Merging your resources or talents with others can be very rewarding this year, but this month, you can feel a stronger desire to succeed all on your own.

Taurus

FRANCE: Old Age Home for Laying Hens

A ‘retirement home’ has just been founded for ‘retired’ layers on a French farm, owned by a start-up whose goal is to save the birds from the slaughterhouse after they have completed their duty tour. Indeed, after laying eggs for their egg-producer owners for 18 months, layers are systematically sent to the slaughterhouse, whereas the average life expectancy of hens is five or six years. The promoters’ idea is therefore to offer the hens a new life by allowing them to live and keep laying eggs at their new abode till they die their natural death. Though the place is referred to as retirement home, “the hens are still very young”, a co-founder of the start-up has pointed out. ‘The Egg that does not kill the Hen’, such is the company’s motto. for that lone passenger! And not until her graduation was the station finally closed down! The company even went as far as adjusting its schedule so that it fitted perfectly with the needs of the student. “We leave no one behind”, an official of the railway company commented.

Yes, only one passenger! In fact, because the station was deemed not profitable to Japan Railways, the company had considered closing it down. UK: Most Unusual Birth Gifts The birth of a third royal baby in London on 23rd April 2018 provides an opportunity to review those unique gifts the royal family has been receiving on such occasions. So, from the most classic (clothes, teats, etc.) to the most original ones, these are some of the gifts received by the princely couple for their children's arrival. When Prince George was born in July 2013, the federal territory of Northern Australia decided to offer him a crocodile in his name! The crocodile egg hatched on 3rd December 2012, the day Kate and William announced the birth of their first child. A few weeks before George was born, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge received a birth kit in which were rompers, baby slippers, and condoms. All pregnant women in Finland are given such a kit. The manager of a London pub, where Kate and William had already travelled, has allocated a lifetime seat in his saloon to Prince George, adorned with a plaque bearing his name. For the birth of their second child, in May 2015, the royal couple received another round of gifts. Asεsεgua And The Pillars Of A Free Republic

Cartoon by Feo.

O

sagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, as the Chief Architect of the 1st Republic, established the Asεsεgua (Stool) /Office of the President as an efficient instrument for use by the Seniormost Citizen in his/her agenda of building the Republic and elevating the quality of life for Ghanaian households to a standard of perfection. His legacy continues to transcend the conscience of nation builders and serves as a reminder that statesmanship is a noble and worthwhile pursuit where it is possible to realise one’s higher-self by virtue of servitude to humanity.

42 | May 2018 ENJOY No 129

The birth of a Free Republic was a symbolic manifestation of Ghanaian advancement, as the Third Parliament, exalted to an eminent degree of autonomy, was now governed by the Asεsεgua upon the departure of the erstwhile colonial Govenor-General, the Earl of Listowell. This had been as a result of a plebiscite held in April 1960. An emblem of Ghanaian Sovereignty, the Asεsεgua represents a connexion between the sacrifice of our forbearers and the citizenry. Through the observation of traditional etiquette, the esoteric rite of the President’s installation expresses reverence for

FEATURE

the Supreme Being and acknowledges dependence on our ancestors, without whose divine intercession, our political misfortunes would have prolonged. As the grip of poverty can only be loosened and eventually eradicated by quality public administration, the Senior-most public servant, propelled to the Asεsεgua by the hand of the Citizenry, appoints and advances fellow citizens/stool-carriers to participation in the same noble profession to enhance the welfare of the Republic. On the 2 July 1960, the 1st Parliament of the Republic assembled to elect a Speaker and Deputy Speaker by Presidential proclamation. Later that day, Osagyefo assumed the office of Commander-In-Chief of the armed forces. On 4 July, however, in a classic demonstration of aesthetic African pomp and pageantry, Osagyefo was welcomed by traditional Talking drums and a 21-gun salute by the Ghana Reconnaissance Squadron, after which he inspected the Third Battalion of the Ghana Regiment. He was escorted to the House by eight linguists drawn from the various provinces, a State Sword Bearer and the Mace Bearer. Horns sounded from the Juaben State Nhatera before he assumed the Asεsεgua. As the sun set on Accra, Osagyefo set ablaze the flame of African freedom and proclaimed the Republic of Ghana. The Asεsεgua regulates the President’s prescribed modes of action, amidst a multiplicity of options, by the laws that govern Asase Yaa (Earth) and the omnipresence of Nyigbla or Twereduampon (Supreme Being), which reminds the operating elements of the Stool that account will be given for service to fellow citizens through this transitory sojourn of life.

“An emblem of Ghanaian Sovereignty, the Asεsεgua represents a connexion between the sacrifice of our forbearers and the citizenry.”

As the axis of political relations, it must remain the principal unifying element of all the Provinces that constitute the Republic. The might of the Afesa-nta (State Sword) should purposefully foster a cultural, political and economic interdependence amongst the various Provinces, through equity in the distribution of resources across the Republic — each Province serving as a unique Pillar of the Free Republic.

Fresh Ginger Ways to Use Fresh Ginger in Your

Beauty Routine

44 | May 2018 ENJOY No 129

Tips for you before we get started: • To peel ginger, just use the side of a spoon. This is a pretty well-known tip, but it must be mentioned. You don’t need a fancy peeler to peel the skin from the ginger. Just tilt your spoon to the side and use the edge to scrape down the ginger. The top layer should peel off easily and quickly. • Peeled ginger keeps very well for months in the fridge, if you submerge it in a high-quality, high proof alcohol. Just peel the ginger and break it into manageable pieces and then pour vodka or vermouth or even sherry (though vodka is best). If you’re planning on using it to cook with, the alcohol will just cook right off when you do. And, bonus: You’ll have ginger-infused vodka to make a new, fancy martini with. Now. Beauty. Skin. Your health. Starting with the toes.

BEAUTY TIPS

Rejuvenating Ginger-Lemon Body Scrub

One of ginger’s most notable qualities is its invigorating, fresh, and spicy feeling. Add it with a bit of lemon zest in a sugar scrub, and you have a body scrub that will warm you up and wake you up at the same time. And here’s a secret for you: Ginger is highly-regarded as one of nature’s best cellulite reducers, so if you do this regularly, you may see a difference in the bumps! Fresh Ginger-Lemon Body Scrub • 1/2 c. organic sugar • 1/4 c. olive oil • 2 tsp freshly grated, peeled ginger • Zest from one organic lemon Combine all ingredients in a small bowl. Stir well. In the shower or bath, scrub your body lightly with the mixture and rinse well. This should keep in the refrigerator (if necessary) for up to a week. But I highly recommend you use it immediately.

Rose Ginger Romantic Massage Oil

• 1 inch peeled, completely clean piece of ginger root, cut into thin slices • 10-12 small dried rosebuds • 1 c. carrier oil (sweet almond, olive, jojoba, hazelnut, etc.) In a small glass container, combine all ingredients and shake to combine, knocking on the side of the glass until all the ginger falls to the bottom. Either let this concoction sit for 5-7 days, shaking daily, or heat over very low heat for 30 minutes to an hour. Use as a warming, romantic massage oil. But keep out of delicate places, because ginger is pretty intense. Of note, ginger is also an exceptional muscle ache reliever. So you don’t just have to use this for sexytimes. Use it whenever there’s a tired, sore muscle in the house.

Cozy Ginger-Cinnamon Bath Salts

For this idea, you can use either coarsely ground sea salt, like I did, or up the ante for relieving muscle aches by using Epsom salts. Both ginger and cinnamon encourage circulation, which in turn helps relieve some of the aches and pains you may feel after a long day. But even better, their scents are so homey and relaxing, so you’ll drift away into relaxation before you know it. Warming Cinnamon-Ginger Bath Salts • 1/4 c. coarsely ground sea salt or Epsom salts • 3 tsp peeled, finely ground or grated ginger • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon • 5 drops sweet orange essential oil (optional, for even more relaxation) Combine all ingredients in a small container and stir well. Add to your hot bath, and swish around a bit before getting in. Soak for 15-20 minutes. Use immediately.

HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS

Happy people create positive relationships.

1.Start with your personal happiness. Happy people create positive relationships. If you are waiting for someone else to make you happy, you will always feel let down. When you're happy within yourself, you reflect that back into your relationship. Start with recognizing how you would rate your level of happiness currently. If you're not as happy as you'd like to be, ask yourself, "What can I do to support myself to feel happier?" The answer could include restarting a hobby, beginning a new health routine, connecting more with friends, or taking steps to follow a passion that is deep within your heart. The crucial element is that you need to step up and take responsibility for your own well-being. By taking action, you will feel more empowered and recognize that happiness ultimately has to be an inside job. This change in energy will move into your relationship.

2. Look for the good. We're all happier when we feel appreciated. It's therefore hardly a surprise that relationships need more positive interactions than negative ones if they are going to thrive. Dr. Gottman's famous research found that you need to have five positive interactions for every negative interaction if your relationship is going to stay happy. Begin with consciously watching for what your partner is doing right, rather than consistently focusing on what they are doing wrong. Look for opportunities to voice your appreciation and aim to add as many positive interactions into your shared experience as you can. Feeling positive emotions is a precursor to a happy relationship. You have the ability to focus your attention so that you look for and appreciate the good in your partner. This simple action ultimately helps to remedy the balance of positiveto-negative interactions and set a relationship back on a healthy track. 3. Make space to nurture your connection. Positive relationships are sustained by a foundation of strong

connection. Just like a small child needs attention to feel truly happy, a relationship needs nurturing if it is going to continue to stay healthy. It is important to put time aside exclusively to connect with your significant other. Rather than assuming it will just happen, create it. It may be a monthly date night (where, thankfully, there is no TV to distract you), taking a walk together, scheduling a vacation, or choosing to fall asleep while cuddling on the couch rather than going to bed alone. Remember that time and energy dedicated to fostering your union is essential. Where your energy goes your attention flows. Attention is the fuel that will help your partner feel important and valued in your life, which will likely lead to the reciprocating of care and kindness. Even when your relationship isn't as happy as you'd like it to be, there are things you can do to improve it. When you take care of yourself and resolve to show up positively for your partner, things begin to flourish. The result—you'll feel both happier in yourselves and in your coupling. e ENJOY No 129 May 2018 | 47

Directions Heat sugar and water in a small saucepan over high heat. Stir to combine. Once boiling, reduce to a simmer and cook for approximately 10-15 minutes, or until the syrup has reduced by half and thickened slightly. Remove from heat and set aside. In a large pitcher, stir together all ingredients except simple syrup (sugar and water mixture) and stir to combine. You should have approximately 1/2 cup simple syrup. I recommend adding half first, stirring and tasting, then adding more to your taste. I liked it with the entire 1/2 cup added, but its all up to your taste! Add the grapefruit slices to the pitcher and stir. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Dip each glass in water and then coat in sea salt (I added a little grapefruit zest to the salt for fun) and fill with ice. Pour the sangria in and enjoy!

SALTY DOG SANGRIA is the ultimate refreshing Summer cocktail! Grapefruit vodka, juice, rose, club soda, and simple syrup come together in one refreshing and beautiful sip.
