Dear Friends, On behalf of my Family and of the entire ENJOY Team, I wish the Ghanaian Nation a very Happy Independence Day on the 6th March 2018! May God continue to make His Face shine upon Ghana and may all Ghanaians home and abroad take deserved Pride in being Citizens of this Great Country! We also wish all women a Blissful Month of March as we all observe the International Women's Day on 8th March. It is gratifying to note that generation after generation, women have made great strides in braking barriers, claiming and occupying their rightful place in society, and, of course, commanding due recognition as nuclei of almost every human setting. For our part at ENJOY, we hanker for seeing, in a not so far future, women among members of AWOL, where AWOL stands for Adventure without Limit. They are a group of friends, living in Ghana, joyful, free and intrepid spirits, having in common the passion of huge motorcycles. They have numerous projects in mind, including exploring new lands on two wheels. They have toured West Africa and they plan to go further. But first, they went on the Ghana Tour, thereby testing men and machines “just to see”. We bring you here pictures from the first three legs of their 10-leg Ghana Tour. Still in the ‘two-wheel’ sector, bikers from all over the world are gathering in Accra in April 2018. We are informed that not less than 1500 of them are expected from outside the country for the occasion. That is good news, for that shows how attractive the country has become for motorbike enthusiasts too. In any case, the iconic US brand Harley-Davidson has finalised its move of settling in Ghana. We bid them welcome as they open their all-fitted shop in Accra, and we wish them brisk business with the hope that in the near future a fully-fledged assembly plant of theirs will find its glorious way unto our shores. We attended the inauguration event, and bring you pictures herein. Finally, we want to congratulate Abstrakte Studios’ Lawrence Adjei-Okyere and his partners, Kusi Adu-Amankwah, Executive Producer, Kumi Obuobisa and Togbe Gavua, writers, and Godfred Adjei, cinematographer, on the impending release of their maiden full-length film ‘Lucky’. This is a Ghanaian production having almost all the features of a top-notch creation. After the premiere, we shall revisit ‘Lucky’. ENJOY!

GO! Discover Your Country with AWOL GHANA TOUR

EPISODE 1 - It all started in 2016

They are a group of friends that have shared the same passion for years: go on an adventure, explore new horizons while enjoying the great outdoors riding large motorbikes. In 2016, they became AWOL - Adventure without limit - determined to live their dream, i.e. to discover beautiful locations on their bikes The first major AWOL trip would be an ACCRADAKAR-ACCRA tour! But why not a GHANA TOUR first, just to test men and machines? The group started frantic preparations, servicing their bikes, getting their packs ready, seeing to the minutest details, studying every information embedded in various speciality videos they watched during meetings or individually. The Ghana Tour Edition, in actual fact a test-trip, was embarked upon from 2nd to 8th January 2016, and 12 | March 2017 ENJOY N 127 o

even the harsh harmattan season conditions could not deter the gallant bikers. In a matter of seven days, the joyful band comprised of Carl, Mawuli, Kobi, Samir, Samuel, John, Hisham, Regis and a technical team (Francis and Richard) covered not less than 2400kms in seven legs. The good news is, throughout the tour, every locality had a Total filling station for filling the tanks, ensuring maintenance or servicing the machines, the more so as the right engine oils were always available. Also, each such filling station boasted a ’Bonjour‘ restaurant for the men! ENJOY brings you pictures from the first three legs of the AWOL Ghana Tour. Watch out for more in subsequent issues.

Day 1: Accra – Axim, 285kms

Axim, in the Western Region, is a land of superb beaches and picturesque resorts. The economy thrives mainly on large-scale fishing, coconut and rubber plantations, as well as some level of mining industry. The area, proud to have produced the legendary Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, is also the land of the Kundum, a harvest and religious festival meant to thank the gods for bountiful harvests. The group put up at Axim Beach Hotel.

Day 2: Axim – Sunyani, 405kms via Tarkwa and Bogoso.

The city of Sunyani is the capital town of the Brong-Ahafo Region of Ghana. Sunyani, which hosts the University of Energy and Natural Resources, enjoys a mainly agrarian economy, which, of course, has also room for services, commerce and industry. Apart from the imposing Cocoa House building dominating its skyline, AWOL Adventurers had the opportunity to admire, among other attractions, the famous Kintampo Waterfalls and the Boabeng Monkey Sanctuary not so far away outside the city.

Day 3: Sunyani – Mole, 338kms

with a stop at the Bui dam. Mole, in the Northern Region, is famous in Ghana and around the world thanks to Mole National Park, the largest national park in the country. Home to the widest range of wildlife, including elephants, antelopes, bushbucks, monkeys, warthogs, baboons and other smaller wildlife, the park is an important study area for scientists. Among other specificities, honey made from flowers in the Mole National Forest is harvested using traditional, non-invasive methods, and has become the region's first fair-trade commodity. Mole honey is sold as a health and wellness supplement in the USA. The park covers an area of 4,912km². At a stone-throw from Mole National Park stands majestically the ancient Larabanga mud-and-stick mosque, which also makes for fascinating visit. Motel Hotel welcomed the ‘adventurers’ for the night.

Critics Love HomePod's Sound but Rap Its Smarts

Privacy-Minded Smart Speaker May Struggle to Get to Know You Mycroft AI earlier this week announced that its Mark II smart speaker achieved full funding on Kickstarter in just 6.5 hours. As of Wednesday, pledges reached more than three times its $50K goal -- with 23 days remaining in the campaign. The Mark II is positioned as an open source alternative to the dominant Amazon Echo line of smart speakers and its main challenger, the Google Home device

Critics have begun weighing in on Apple's HomePod smart speaker, and they're loving the device's sound but don't have much affection for its smarts. The HomePod's sound outclassed top-shelf competitor SonosOne, according to Matthew Panzarino, writing for TechCrunch. "The HomePod was the 'best' sounding. It's nuanced and subtle with great separation and clarity across all kinds of music," he wrote. "The One, for instance, had decent mid range but an overly bright high-end with just the out of the box calibration," Panzarino continued. "At maximum volume, the One became shrill and painful where the HomePod maintained balance." Pumped out through a woofer with custom amplifier and seven tweeters, the audio also impressed Brian X. Chen, who reviewed the HomePod for The New York Times.

Batteries in New iPhones Could Have Shorter Life Spans There was some bad news for owners of the latest iPhone models on Monday. Batteries in the iPhone 8 and X may have shorter life spans than those in prior models. Typically, phone batteries begin losing their effectiveness after 500 recharges. Up to that point, they can hold up to 80 percent of their charge. After that, it's usually downhill for the battery.

PARENTS' CORNER

Can our

Children save the Earth we live in ?

The importance of preserving Nature can be seen so keenly in the world today. Weather patterns are changing and becoming more hostile: habitats have been lost, common species of animals become extinct or close to it and pollution in the environment has made some parts of the world difficult to live in.. If we knew that the shark played such a vital part in the good health and balance of our oceans, would we be keen to hunt it? We hope not. Or that the majestic Grey Rhino, who is close to extinction, is a vital part of the ecosystem it lives in? Or that most of our children will never see one alive? Would we

have been more protective of our environment? I like to think so. Our children’s generation will invent and innovate ways to repair our world and move into an era of peace and harmony. To empower them we need to nurture their innate love for all things that live. To help them grow into people who want to crusade for its protection, there is much we can do. Let’s make our children aware and respectful of water consumption. For example, washing our hands and taking a shower do not need to be lengthy just efficient. Animals as little as the ant need our protection, as all their families in some way protect ours, so let’s

Kamilla Kirpalani Founder and Academic Director Maria Montessori Teacher Training Center Little Explorers Montessori Plus School

teach our children not to smash them as they come across them. Help them be empathetic to the animals around them and expose them to literature and movies that speak of the need and wonder of all forms of life. Reuse and recycle. There is too little tolerance for items that are just a little worn out. In Ghana there are many talented specialists who will fix items to almost brand new. Let us encourage our children to repurpose items they no longer need rather than disposing of them. The habit of repairing items rather than replacing them is more economical. Being sensible about food consumption will be extremely useful to the generations to come. How much wastage children see in their own home has a direct impact on how they respect food in the future. Having them donate portions rather than putting them into Tupperware simply to be thrown out days later will leave a lasting impression. Let’s prepare our children for a better future together. Much can still be done.

HOW TO MANAGE LIFESTYLE INFLATION

W

e have chanced upon this thought-provoking article by Jean Folger, an award-winning author and regular contributor to industry magazines and financial news outlets. Wat she says here makes so much sense, fits so much in our environment and is supposed to be of interest to so many people in struggling African countries that we have decided to reproduce same verbatim for our esteemed readers. This is the first part; the second part will be published in our April issue. ENJOY! Most people will spend more money if they have more money to spend. Consider a college graduate who, just embarking on his career, settles into to a comfortable apartment for $750 a month. A couple of years later, his salary has increased, so he finds a “better” apartment for $1,250 a month. The old apartment was adequate – good condition, great location, nice neighbours – but the new one is located in a more exclusive neighbourhood. Despite the fact that the original living arrangement was fine, he traded up to a more expensive apartment – not because he needed to, but because he could. When a person advances into a more profitable position at work, his or her monthly expenses typically rise correspondingly. This is a phenomenon known as lifestyle

22 | March 2017 ENJOY No 127

inflation, and it can present a problem, because even though you might still be able to pay your bills, you are limiting your ability to build wealth. Why Lifestyle Inflation Happens People have a strong tendency to spend more if they have more. A couple factors are at work here. One is the "keeping-up-withthe-Joneses" mentality. It’s not uncommon for people to feel like they have to keep up with their friends’ and business associates’ buying habits. If everyone drives a BMW to the office, for example, you might feel compelled or pressured to buy one as well, even if your old Honda Accord gets the job done just fine. Likewise, your house on one side of the city may have been your dream home when you moved in, but with so many of your colleagues talking up life on the other side of the city, suddenly you may feel the need for a new address. Lifestyle inflation creeps into more areas than

cars and homes – you can also end up spending more money than you need to (or should) on vacations, dining out, entertainment, boats, private school tuition and wardrobes, just to keep up with the Joneses. Keep in mind that the Joneses are typically servicing a lot of debt over a period of decades to maintain their wealthy appearance. Just because they look rich doesn’t mean they are and doesn’t mean they are making financially sound decisions. Another contributing factor to lifestyle inflation is entitlement. You’ve worked hard for your money so you feel justified in splurging and treating yourself to better things. While this is not always a bad thing, rewarding yourself too much for your hard work can be detrimental to your financial health now and in the future. About the writer: Jean Folger is an author and freelance writer specializing in the financial markets and personal finance topics, as well as adventure sports, travel, and the great outdoors. She is the co-author of the award-winning book Make Money Trading: How to Build a Winning Trading Business (Marketplace Books, 2007), and has co-authored and contributed to two other books. Her articles have been featured in industry magazines and on numerous financial and news websites.

THE FINANCIAL TERM OF THE MONTH: BUYBACK A buyback, also known as a repurchase, is the purchase by a company of its outstanding shares that reduces the number of its shares on the open market. Companies buy back shares for a number of reasons, such as to increase the value of shares still available by reducing the supply of them or eliminate any threats by shareholders who may be looking for a controlling stake. A buyback allows companies to invest in themselves. A company may feel its shares are undervalued and buy them back to provide investors with a return, and because the company is bullish on its current operations. Credit Investopedia.Com e

CONGESTION GALORE IN OUR COMMUNITIES

S

pending hours stuck in heavy traffic while commuting to our various places of work has become an inevitability of life in almost every part of the world including, of course, Ghana. The phenomenon is at times referred to as ‘Congestion’. But congestion is not experienced only on the roads. Congestion is indeed all around us. Sometimes, we try to make life but at other times it's not that simple for ourselves by managing the situation, but at other times.Be that as it may, let us choose to make the best out of a bad deal by rising above the clutter ‘congestion’ and admiring the beauty in the clusters. With his drone, Douglas Anane-Frimpong, a photo-journalist with Daily Graphic in Accra, has hovered over the topic. Enjoy his pictures taken from above.

the artist to whom we owe these expressive photographs on the theme ‘Beauty in Clutter’, is a former Visual Arts student of Accra Academy. He later graduated from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi with a Bachelor's Degree in Arts (Graphic Design) in 2001, after which he started practicing as a Graphic Designer and Photojournalist. Douglas has been using drones for close to 2 years now. As evidenced in these photographs, the drones have really added a “dazzling perspective” to photography. Hear Douglas: “Drones give me the flexibility around my subjects. I also get a 3D perspective and a bird's eye view of the subject without any hassle of having to climb onto high structures”. NOKIA 8 My Truly Top Class Handset The Android Nokia 8 smartphone on Android OS with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset arrived last year but I have just had the opportunity to test it, use it and appreciate it. The promise of a high-end smartphone by Nokia following the rather poor appearances of Nokia 3, 5 and 6 has been fulfilled, and handsomely so! It runs on Android, arguably the most user-friendly and most flexible operating system a smartphone can dream of! My sleek Nokia 8 takes on board almost all the technical features that can be expected, in my view, on a 2018 flagship handset, which makes me state simply that Nokia 8 is truly a powerful premium smartphone, especially after the original Android 7.1 Nougat operating system the device came with has been upgraded to the latest Android 8.0 Oreo OS after firmware update as announced. Design and Screen The Nokia 8 is a very cute phone. Its compact format and finesse, coupled with the aluminium case and rounded corners, allow an excellent grip by the user. Moreover, the ports arranged symmetrically on both sides, the fingerprint recognition on the main button as well as the mirror facet of the aluminium only enhance the premium aspect of the Nokia 8. The 5.3-inch IPS WQHD screen offers very good contrast, balanced colours and excellent brightness, and even in very sunny outdoor conditions, I easily enjoy my screen. I love the way the screen is perfectly fluid, as well as the comfortable speed at which applications open. Nougat, the latest version of Android operating the system, is certainly not alien to that feat. Performance My Nokia 8 has proved to be a companion I can count on, as it gives full satisfaction in daily use as regards telephony, chats and surfing especially since it runs on Android. It resists multitasking and does not give any signs of overheating, slowing or freezing, even when it is highly solicited. That is the power of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset, I have been told. The handset, with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage capacity (expandable by another 256GB via microSD card), boasts a USB-Type port and, of course, all the usual wireless connectivity features: Wi-Fi, 4G, GPS, Bluetooth 5.0, etc. And I can say Nokia 8 is fulfilling its mission in respect of communication. When I call or receive a call, I and my interlocutor have it crisp and clear, and the network coverage is very good. Sound Sound is emitted from a speaker on the bottom edge of the smartphone. One interesting feature is that several microphones are encrusted in the chassis of the Nokia 8. So when a video is shot with the Nokia 8 and then watched with headphones, the sound is spatialized. Though quite anecdotal in everyday life, that feature is, to me, a nifty one. Photography I will say colours in pictures taken with the three 13-megapixel cameras on the phone (2 at the back and 1 at the front) are reasonably faithful. Also, with the ‘Bothie’ functionality, I can use my Nokia 8 for

live interviews in which I and the interviewee are filmed at the same time since it allows me to snap pictures or record videos with front and back cameras concomitantly. I must say that is very convenient and fun! In any case, my videos render clear and surround sound. Autonomy The 3090 mAh battery gives remarkable autonomy. Thus my Nokia 8 has no difficulty taking me along the whole day, even though I make bounteous use of the phone on calls, WhatsApp, emails, browser, music and videos. My Verdict The Nokia 8 is a lovely smartphone running on Android and a fascinating first flagship for Nokia’s rebound. It is very attractive and has had me convinced that it deserves a Premium locus. I remain captivated by its video potential, especially by Bothie, its autonomy and the fast updates towards Android 8.0 Nougat. The Editor | ENJOY No 127 March 2017

Lucky the FILM ‘Lucky’, the debut feature film from Ghana’s Abstrakte Studios, is to hit our screens soon. With a cast comprised of great names in the nation’s film industry like Fred Amugi and Akofa Adjeani Asiedu, and featuring Kabuki Akiwumi, Nenesenor Abloso, Papa Osei, Efya, Solomon Fixon-Owoo, and Kumi Obuobisa in the eponymous role, ‘Lucky’ tells of the tribulations of a stony broke student who won’t give up in his search for money to honour an unexpected date. The beauty of the whole production lies also in the vision of the production team, who have believed in their dream of telling a Ghanaian story the Ghanaian way but with modern, global attributes. ‘Lucky’ is a creation of Kumi Obuobisa and Togbe Gavua, co-written by Joewackle J Kusi and Togbe Gavua. Executive Producers are Kusi Adu-Amankwah and Lawrence Adjei-Okyere. 32 | March 2017 ENJOY No 127

ask Billie...

If you are at home, she could feel resentful and this could be her way of showing it.

Billie Richardson is a Holistic Psychotherapist. A French national, she studied in the UK and has been practicing in Accra for the past 12 years. She is the CEO of Corporate Counselling, located at Roman Ridge Arcades at Airport Residential Area. Your questions, comments and suggestions are welcome at the address: dearbillie@enjoyaccra.com

Dear Billie, It feels as though I’m the only one making any effort. Every time my girlfriend and I argue, I back down, I apologize. I tell her that she’s right and I’m sorry. Around the house, I’m the one tidying up, cooking the food and keeping the place clean. If she isn’t laying on the sofa with a bottle of wine in her hand, then she’s in the bath or in bed. It’s left to me to pay the bills too and I’ve had enough. I still love my girl as much as ever, but if I didn’t put myself out, then we’d be living in a continuous mess. She works for a large company and I understand that she’s busy and important. But she never rings or texts me during the day. She says she forgets. The other week, she went on a business trip for two nights. I had no idea that she was going away and honestly thought something terrible had happened to her. Eventually, I managed to get her boss on the phone and he confirmed that five of them were in a hotel in Kumasi looking for new clients. I could hear strange noises in the background. I later accused her of having sex with the man who pays her wages. She went mad and now our relationship is in an even worse shape than before. 34 | March 2017 ENJOY No 127

When I tell her that I feel like a spare part, she tells me not to look for problems with the relationship. It’s very upsetting that I’m not her priority any more. When we first got together, she couldn’t keep her hands off me. But, in the past few months, things have changed so much. She’s taking me for granted and treating me like a piece of furniture. Can we come back from this or do I need to claw back my self-respect and admit that we’ve gone about as far as we’re ever going to go? Charles in Tema Comm18

e

---------------------------------------Dear Charles, Your girlfriend needs to hear that you have needs and feelings too. Of course, she must be busy and important and all the rest of it, but your home isn’t somewhere where she can simply laze around and take advantage. She needs to understand that successful relationships are a work in progress. She also needs to be reminded about give and take and pulling her weight too. Find some time to finally have this out with her. You haven’t mentioned whether you also work or you are mainly at home.

In any case, calmly explain that things have started to drift and that you are not happy about the situation you find yourselves in. Going to Kumasi without telling you in advance was inconsiderate to say the least. Remind her that you care about her and need to know where you stand. Does she understand that if you stop trying, then this relationship will collapse? Maybe there is something going on with her she is not telling you about. Have a heart to heart with her, no judging, no condemning. Let us know how you get on. e Dear Billie, Paul and I were together for two years and I thought he was serious about me. But then I changed my hairstyle and lost a lot of weight. I'm convinced he woke up one morning, looked at the woman I'd become and started planning his escape. A few weeks later, a friend told me that he was seeing someone else. Did my flat chest and skinny bum drive him into the arms of another? I think they did. I can't help thinking that he only strayed because I am so unattractive and inadequate. When I look at other women in the spotlight, I can't imagine that any man is ever going to find me attractive again. I'm no Super Model and struggle to look at myself in the mirror. My friends tell me I'm attractive with a fantastic personality, but what use is that when I am convinced that I now face a lonely future? A good sense of humor isn't going to keep me warm in bed at night, is it? My ex-boyfriend was fantastic handsome and charming. I couldn't believe it when he first asked me

ADVICE CORNER out and my all my girlfriends were so jealous. For months, he treated me like a princess. We had great holidays and nights out and our sex life was incredible and completely off the scale. Then we settled down into a decent, loving relationship and I assumed I was set for life. Now he's all over social media bragging about his new life with his amazingly beautiful new partner and I feel terrible. If I could walk out of here every morning with a sack over my head then I would happily do so Mary in Cantonmentse

------------------------------Dear Mary, You tell me about how charming and perfect your former partner was but he couldn't have been that great if he cheated on you and is now bragging about his new partner all over social media. Stop viewing him through rose-tinted glasses and start seeing him as the flawed, rather insensitive individual he really is. The fact is, none of us is perfect. You could meet with the 10 most beautiful women in the world tomorrow and I can absolutely guarantee that they'd all have insecurities, worries and things about themselves that they hate. The fact is that your confidence took a massive blow when you discovered your ex was cheating on you with another woman. Now is the time to focus on yourself but first, thank your lucky stars for saving you from the clutches of this very shallow man. Everything that shines isn’t gold and I suggest you take time in your next relationship to assess and understand who you are dating. Good luck and let us know how you are. e

Dear Billie, My boss has taken advantage of me every single day last year. Last September, she got me to pick up her mother’s ashes from the funeral home and a few days later got me to order her boyfriend out of her apartment. I literally had to stand there while the poor man packed his bags and ordered a taxi. He was in tears asking me why she didn’t have the guts to speak to him herself. What could I say? That the woman is a complete egomaniac and a monster? Which she is! She expects me to be on call all the time. My job description is written on a piece of elastic band – I’m supposed to be her professional assistant yet she gets me to organize everything, from a new bed to her appointments with her gynecologist. She clearly doesn’t view me as a real man because absolutely nothing is sacred. Even when she’s in the office, I assist her with my creative ideas, practical knowledge and strong work ethic. The woman is absolutely shameless. She happily picks my brains then she passes all my thoughts off as her own – and happily takes the credit. Our customers think she’s a creative genius, but she’s a fraud. She’s a hopeless drinker and is hooked on all sorts of prescription and nonprescription drugs. This situation is really beginning to get me down. I’m never normally a negative person, but she is an energy vampire. She never tells me that I am appreciated or even thanks me for anything I do. I know I should move on, but I can’t seem to find the strength to do it. I really need help. Adrian in Dome

Dear Adrian, You’re clearly a very bright person with clever ideas and natural talent. Despite your boss stealing all your thoughts, you’re still coming up with the goods and making her business a success. But her business is not your business and you have to start putting yourself first. Have faith in yourself and don’t let her rob you of your confidence or your originality and sparkle. Compile a list of everything you’re good at and all you’ve achieved. Then draw up a chart of all the jobs you’d like to do in all the places you like. You obviously have the work ethic and the experience, so why shouldn’t you branch out and take the world by storm? The bottom line is that you’ve been with your boss for too long. Familiarity has bred contempt, as she no longer respects you and takes you for granted in a big way. Don’t do anything rash like giving in your notice this week, but do start hatching a plan so you have something positive and realistic to work towards and achieve. You’re never going to change her, so start making your own luck. Every day that you stay in her shadow is another day wasted. Don’t delude yourself – she would get rid of you in a heartbeat if she felt like it. You might consider enrolling the help of a life coach who could help you chart out a plan for yourself. You also need to learn to put firmer boundaries in general because now it’s your boss, tomorrow could be someone else. Don’t allow anyone to erode your self-respect. Good luck Adrian

Renaissance of Accra

Our due rights and privileges as free women and men across the various provinces of Ghana arguably remain limited within our current democratic framework. There is an ever-widening gap of rhetoric and reality between the officially sanctioned lines of local authority within public institutions and the influence of informal networks on our political silhouette. Resident-citizens of Accra deserve the freewill to ascertain objectives as an organised district, prioritise socioeconomic and cultural issues on the basis of consensus and instruct the relevant provinces to construct — the Republic, mirroring the ideals of a freely participating citizenry, being the architect and the provinces her contractors. Hence, Ghanaian citizens deserve to scrutinise at regular open District Assembly summonses, the allocation and management of such resources in achieving district objectives, as well updating the Assembly concerning the ongoing modern wants of society. Thus, maximising the contribution of both civil and, or, entrepreneurial citizens to nation building even in the remotest of the interior whether formally educated or illiterate. This puts an end to a system of governance which absolves government from accountability to the citizenry. Indeed, this is the future of an allinclusive and vibrant democratic fraternity. In this age of technology, with households latched onto social media, magazines and other news-gathering resources, it has become much easier to enhance civic participation. The Executive must imperatively yield power to a 42 | March 2017 ENJOY No 127

greater proportion of the citizenry by conducting elections for the Mayor of Accra and district councillors, on the basis of common suffrage, for all City residents. Perhaps, a monumental post-partisan movement, or the emergence of a movement outside the initiative of the conventional parties dominating the 4th Republic would reveal itself and symbolise a switch towards the politics of the future. The Mayor of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly is expected, above all, to preserve the peace

of the City; oversee the effective administration of civil and criminal justice; advocate a constitutional review for the enactment of laws which exclusively apply to Accra; promote free enterprise and raise the streams of revenue to support The Republic. We must also consider the prospect of the AMA as a legation/foreign mission, which could also serve as trading posts, stationed in various commercial cities throughout the Universe and outlining a progressive Metropolitan Foreign Policy for development —

prioritising the long-term financial welfare of the metropolis yet retaining reasonable flexibility in the face of unforeseeable global events. Since our political aspirations must transcend beyond our boundaries, this is an opportunity to emphasise Ghanaian exceptionalism and, especially, to project Accra as a lucrative global city with a unique personality of its own by marketing domestic goods and services — targeting Africa and the Caribbean. The establishment of a Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce could also serve as an

effective channel of communication with influential free market stakeholders of the Republic to initiate dialogue on economic policies affecting the metropolis — such as the provision of offshore financial services — and confer on viable measures. This is part of an effort to modernise the City as a premier fin-tech and commercial hub for international trade, arts and culture. Indeed, this is an avenue through which we can boost the exports our technical expertise; culture and even our secondary products en masse to untapped free markets such as São Tomé and Príncipe, Haiti, Barbados, San Domingo, Saint Lucia, etc. The Republic is also better positioned to develop her own sphere of influence by uniting a bloc of nations and providing global leadership through commerce, culture and military cooperation. As no civilisation can triumph without the grace of nature, it is only imperative that the City is adorned in her natural-state and her construction engineered in accordance with the intrinsic features of our environment. We must dare to challenge the status quo with pragmatic eco-friendly alternatives. Pioneering innovative and intellectually challenging agricultural competitions, with enticing rewards of capital investment and world-class technical assistance, could further act as a catalyst for domestic farming and other horticulturist enterprises. An opportunity to bridge the expertise between technological innovation and indigenous entrepreneurship, this as a major step towards ecological balance in the Capital. Open-air spaces, such as the Kinbu Gardens near the Barnes road, could be remodelled to serve as green fee-free parks

of recuperation for our industrious citizens as part of an effort to cluster our tropical metropolis with palm trees and fragrant flowerbeds. Also, the multiple fortresses constructed on Ghana’s coast over centuries and gained through conquest, as well deteriorating public assets, possess immense potential for modernisation as commercial and social enterprises — such as museums; centres of scholarships; public libraries and hotels. In my view, an ideal City Cabinet of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly should consist of a Mayor, Prime Councillor & City Diplomat; Deputy Mayor for Finance and Commerce; Deputy Mayor for Foreign Relations; City Exchequer; non-executive Traditional Representative of the National House of Chiefs; City Attorney; City Comptroller and Solicitor; City Prosecutor; City Chief Clerk; City Chief Architect; City Environmentalist; City Intelligence Chief; City Press Commissioner & Linguist and City Cultural Ambassador to head metropolitan departments. The Inclusion of non-executive representation for minority groups, such as physically challenged persons, on Councils is also a matter of keen interest and an option which should be explored. The strength of the local government is dependent on the patronage it receives from us citizens. It is my hope that our sacred tricoloured national flag lures the most skilful citizens to serve and sacrifice in honour of this sovereign nation. I wish to take this opportunity to wish my fellow citizens of Ghana, both at home and overseas, a happy Independence Day. May God bless our beloved motherland, long live The Republic! e

Simple All

Natural Beauty Tips

1. Banana and Egg Hair Treatment

Looking for a little more shine in your hair? Simply mix one egg and a mashed up banana. Apply it as a thick paste to your hair and leave it on for 10 – 30 minutes. Wash it our doing your usual hair washing ritual (if you usually use a store-bought conditioner you’ll probably only need to condition the ends). And voila! Super simple, and all natural, beauty tip.

Remember, the best all natural beauty tips and secrets are not quick fixes. They require good sleep, stress management, proper nutrition, healthy supplementation and physical exercise. While all these little “gems” above can provide some oomph to your beauty routine, remember that real beauty is a result of taking care (or “thanking”) your body on a daily basis. And by being you. Because you are beautiful.

2. Moisturizing Nail Treatment

Soak your nails in olive oil for five minutes. And then sit back and admire your pretty hands.

3. Simple Honey Face Mask Raw honey is naturally anti-bacterial and a super quick way to get soft, beautiful skin. Once a week use a tablespoon or so of raw honey (not the processed stuff parading as honey) and gently warm it by rubbing your fingertips together. Spread on your face. Leave on for 5 – 10 minutes and then use warm water to gently rinse it off and pat dry. Then bask in the glow of your honey-awesomeness. This raw honey is awesome, by the way.

BEAUTY TIPS

4. Apple Cider Vinegar Clarifying Shampoo

For those who are using commercial shampoos: To help eliminate any build up in your hair, mix ¼ cup organic apple cider vinegar (like this) with 1 cup water. Follow with your usual conditioner.

5. Elbow and Knee Exfoliate and Skin Brightener Cut an orange in half and rub it on your elbows and knees. Helps soften those rough patches. And it smells good. (Rinse off the sticky mess when you are done.

6. Gentle Body Scrub

Mix a 2 to 1 ratio of olive oil and sea salt to make a quick and effective body scrub. This helps get rid of dead skin cells creating softer, more glowing skin. And this natural beauty tip is much cheaper that expensive store bought body scrubs.

7. Easy Deep Conditioning Hair Treatment

Want super soft, hydrated hair? This is one of my favorite all natural beauty tips. Use melted coconut oil as a deep conditioning hair and scalp treatment. Massage coconut oil into your scalp and then work it through your hair. Leave it on for a couple of hours and then wash it out using shampoo (no need to condition unless you have really long hair and then maybe just the ends.) Note: For you no ‘poo-ers keep in mind that coconut oil will saturate your hair with awesome goodness… that can be really hard to get out with just baking soda and *some* natural shampoos. You may want to try just a little coconut oil on a little section of hair and see if you can get it out before you do this. Otherwise you might have really greasy (but soft!) hair for a few washes. NOT that I’m speaking from personal experience of anything (*cough*).

8. Simple Toxic-Free Shaving Cream

Use coconut oil on your legs as a natural replacement for your shaving cream. Talk about a simple, natural beauty tip.

9. All Natural Black Head Removal

Place 4 or 5 drops of raw honey on an open lemon wedge. Then rub the lemon on your face for a minute, emphasizing any trouble areas. Leave the mixture on for 5 minutes and rinse with cold water. (Keep in mind that citrus can make your skin photosensitive so it’s best to do this before bed rather than before going outside).

10. Dry Brushing for Better Skin

Dry brushing is a simple detoxification process for your body. It stimulates a number of organs through a gently massage. It also helps the lymphatic system, eliminates dead skin coatings, strengthens the immune system, can eliminate cellulite, stimulates the hormones, and can help tighten skin through better circulation. Best of all, it’s cheap and easy. Learn more about dry brushing and how to do it here. Here’s a great skin brush to get you started!

Little Things You can

DO TODAY TO IMPROVE Your Marriage By Carolin Lehmann

Marriage takes work ― that’s a fact. It’s about putting in the effort every single day to build a meaningful and lasting relationship. But it doesn’t necessarily have to be hard work!

1. Focus on the positive. “It may be easy to look at your partner and find things that they do or say that are irritating, annoying or even hurtful to you. You may even think that it is part of your responsibility as a spouse to point out or correct those issues. However, criticism is rarely received well and usually does more harm than good. As a spouse, one of your primary duties is to be supportive and encouraging of your partner. So, stop criticizing them and focus on the positive things that they do.” ― Nari Jeter, marriage and family therapist

2. Apologize if you’ve done something wrong. “If you’ve done something wrong, big or small, bite the bullet and give a clear, honest apology. No, ‘I’m sorry you’re upset’ isn’t an apology. Nor is ‘I’m sorry you heard it that way.’ Not only is that not an apology, but you’re also calling them an idiot for not deciphering your words or intentions correctly. When you take responsibility for telling a lie, conducting a misdeed or even just contributing to a misunderstanding, you’re saying that the health of the relationship takes priority over your competitive need to be right.” ― Ryan Howes, clinical psychologist

3. Try your hardest not to blame your partner.

“When couples fight, they tend to criticize and blame each other, which causes the same reaction in return. Make a personal commitment to using no blame in your communication. Instead, think about your feelings and needs and speak in terms of ‘I.’” ― Gal Szekely, marriage and family therapist

Because the little things can make a big difference.

A real apology goes a long way. Own up to your mistakes! 46

HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS

4. Look up from your phones ― and at each other. “No, it’s not a staring contest. Spend a few moments gazing at your spouse. We rarely take the time to stop and look at our partners, so it’s easy to miss their nonverbal cues. When we pause and gaze at one another, this creates a pathway for connection, and it can be calming and deepen our relational experience.” ― Anne Crowley, licensed psychologist 5. Appreciate each other’s differences. “I’m currently working with a young couple who came to me at the brink of divorce. The wife feels like her husband is often distant when they argue and wants to get to a solution immediately. He, on the other hand, often needs time to be by himself to sort things through before talking about it. When he steps away, she feels abandoned. When he comes back to talk with her, she has checked out because she feels alone. Ultimately, they never resolve any conflict, and become more and more distanced from each other. I have coached them on how to find ways to really understand and appreciate their differences in handling emotional conflict, rather than judging and shaming one another for these differences. They now practice naming what they are feeling.” ― Jennifer Gauvain, licensed clinical social worker 6. Check in. “One thing that can greatly damage a marriage is a lack of communication. This can be the result of hurried schedules or even lingering resentment from a disagreement. However, communication is a building block of intimacy, so it is critical to communicate in a healthy and

There’s always room for improvement in a marriage. consistent manner. When you make checking in a part of your daily habits, you are letting your partner know that they are important to you.” ― Nari Jeter 7. Actually listen. “People don’t often admit it, but we all like getting attention. One of the quickest ways to let your spouse know that you care and that they matter is simply by listening to them. How do you prove you’re listening? By dropping your electronics, giving full eye contact and occasionally reflecting their words back to them. If your spouse says, ‘I had to do so much running around today, chauffeuring the kids all over town,’ you could respond, ‘you were behind the wheel all day. You must be exhausted.’ This way your spouse feels heard and understood, and the two of you are connected.” ― Ryan Howes 8. Show your spouse you appreciate him or her. “Showing appreciation goes a long way to help build a good connection with your partner. Think

about something your partner did, or something you like about who they are, and let them know you appreciate it.” ― Gal Szekely 9. Think before actively pushing your spouse’s buttons. “You know your spouse, yet still push his or her buttons. This creates conflict and distance in the relationship. Predict how your spouse will respond and anticipate their reaction. Let that influence how you choose to approach your spouse.” ― Anne Crowley 10. Practice the golden rule. “This should be easy, but I can’t tell you how many couples I have seen who are just not nice to each other. Somewhere along the way, people forget the golden rule. Speak to each other with respect. No name calling. No intimidation. Absolutely no physical or emotional abuse. Of course, none of us are perfect. When you notice yourself being mean, always ― always ― own it and apologize to your spouse.” ― Jennifer Gauvain e www.huffingtonpost.com ENJOY No 127 March 2017 | 47

month of this year! WOW! I’m sure you been working hard to make it your best year ever too! So, this month, I want to share a few basic stretches to help STRETCH IT OUT and relax a bit. If you haven’t been too active, here are a few tips to help you get moving: 1. Do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity/ week. It can be 30 minutes for 5 days/week or just 10 minute bouts of activity a few times during the day. Exercising at this level can yield significant health benefits (World Health Organization, 2011 Guidelines).

3. Park far away from building entrances. 4. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. 5. Dane, dance, dance, to your favorite music. Now, let’s STRETCH IT OUT! Shown below are six stretches to help you STRETCH IT OUT! Give them a try and let me know how it goes!
